Thanks so much for watching! And yeaaaah.. after recording this reaction I did find out about what Jonathan Majors did and the result of it, so therefore know that he was booted from returning to the MCU. Unfortunate when talented actors end up being trash people.

we do see Jonathan Majors 1 more time and it's the most obvious thing but yeah the plan for making Kang the big bad of the Multiverse Saga was thrown out of the window after the whole allegations. And to be fair Jonathan was innocent, it was his ex-girlfriend at fault here, she assaulted him.
I wouldn’t class him as a trash person considering he had more basic human decency than his ex-girlfriend.
Yeah he was supposed to be the next big bad, but the MCU is going another direction.
@@kaiielle yeah certainly a redeemable level of trash, if he works towards it, I wouldn't put him at a Spacey or Weinstein level of trash, but I can see why marvel in that moment had no other choice, not great having a big movie coming out and the main antagonist is preparing for an assault trial
This was rough for me. I love the Ant Man movies, but I was so frustrated in the movie theater when Cassie was coming for Scott so much early, and I just couldn't recover. I remember being annoyed like an hour later, it was rattling around in my head. He saved her life, saved half the UNIVERSE and in the first 2 movies he was Cassies hero. Now she's railing on him for not doing "anything", while she's going to protests and that's "real work". Unnecessary political preaching aside, I thought it was a horrible way to take her character. Which may be why you felt different about Cassie, she went from seeing him as a hero to someone she scolded? I was so excited walking into the theater, and the first few minutes, just sat wrong with me.
I genuinely don't understand the praise I've seen for Bill Murray in this cameo. He looks half asleep, like he's been for the last 20 years. And not in a funny "the character is bored" way, but in a "the actor doesn't care" way.
9:55 That voice is David Dastmalchian, who played Kurt, one of Scott's buddies in the first 2 Ant-Man movies. He was also in Dune.
one of the main reasons why I like your reactions is the fact that you try your best to deprive yourself of any information that could harm your experience with the film. If I hadn't known about all the drama surrounding Majors at the time I watched the film, I would probably have a different view of his performance.
Yeah I found out about Majors AFTER the reaction was over and review was filmed. But I'm glad to know about it moving forward, to be honest.
But all that drama came up after the movie was released, or am I misremembering? I think the controversy was around the time S2 of Loki came out?
@@Renoistic yeah ik, i didn't watch it on the release
I mean I grew up with two parents being sheriff's since I was a child. Court stories and all types. Most people assume and judge even before it is settled in court lmao. Guilty until proven innocent and after you're still guilty. Then we got profession, status, race, gender, etc. lol. Even being a person who been in a similar situation and having a girl say she'd lie. Thank god I was always taught to save text and she forgot both my parents sheriffs. Told on herself in the text anyway. ..even though court had video footage of that whole dispute. End of the day. Kang was the best part of this movie tbh
i bet that kang from quantomania might return as an antagonist or even the main villain in the 3rd and last mcu saga(eternity wars)
The “Blink” cut in was a very nice touch!
He who remains from Loki season 1 sort of explained what Kang is doing. All of the variants want to safeguard their own timeline and destroy the others. To win, as Kang said.
Some simply went insane and did want to destroy them all, unable to accept other "hims". He Who Remains mentioned that, too.
Aww, you left out one of my favorite exchanges. After Hank drinks the bar's version of "the ooze."
"Hello. I don't know your ways or customs... but I assume that you have a beverage that can get me drunk?" Bartender: "Absolutely, sir."
I mean, man's got priorities XD
After watching Jonathan play He Who Remains, Kang, and Victor Timely (whom we saw in the Stinger for Loki Season 2), I really wish he'd been a decent person, because damn he's got some acting chops. He Who Remains was chill and joking around, while Kang here is... absolutely terrifying in his brutality. We know they're essentially the same person (since He Who Remains won in the last Multiversal War), yet their personalities when we see them are vastly different.
I don't know if it was Paul Rudd himself, or if they did some CGI on his face at the end, when he starts panicking if Kang was defeated or not, because he just starts looking older, then when the tone picks back up he goes back to looking like himself.
Loved ur reaction. Keeping reacting to everything. Best to form ur own opinion. ❤
You saying "Legion" reminded me of how I found your reactions after watching you play Mass Effect. 😊
While it's kind of a cinematic cul-de-sac, this is still a highly entertaining movie with cool ideas, dazzling effects, solid action, and great comedy (though I did miss the X-Cons).
3:40 Kaiielle's tacit approval of somewhat extreme, yet ultimately harmless, civil disobedience combined with her Nerd-Girl Energy at 3:50 continues to make her one of The Greats.
16:16 "Whoa, this some Coruscant-lookin' sh!t.".... Marry me 💍😁
24:02 Yeah, seems as though it might be like taking at least three hits of good acid, putting on kaleidoscopic glasses, and riding roller-coasters for hours. 🤔😉
Jonathan majors is such a good actor and the stuff that got him fired here ended up being such a muddy and hard to reconcile situation, I hope he learns from it and can make it back to acting. As for kangs history it was really given in the end of Loki season 1 but a lot of people didn't watch that and also didn't understand this motivation, he's basically trying to do what his now dead variant "he who remains" did before him, control the multiversal chaos, but with force instead of deception
Bill Murray.. that reminds me.. Groundhog Day is coming up. 😀
Again?
Hahahahahaha@@havok6280
@@havok6280It is only once a year, right?
I watch it every day.
Hey Kaiielle.
I don’t love this one. Don’t hate this one. I agree with you it’s my least favorite of the trilogy.
The first problem I had with this movie was not only was this our 3rd actress to play Cassie, but this version of her was really annoying at the beginning of the movie.
The bit at the beginning where everyone seems to be undermining Scott as a hero and a parent was really confusing and obnoxious. They would all be dust if it weren’t for him and their mocking him like it’s not a big deal.
Also, one of the dynamics that make the first 2 Ant-Man movies enjoyable is Luis, Dave, Kurt, Paxton & Maggie and they were completely erased from this movie. Not even a mention.
(Luis’ storytelling has always been the highlight of these movies, why get rid of that?
Also, the movie is called Ant Man and the Wasp, but there wasn’t much Wasp.
When they first announced phase 5 all the way back in 2019 San Diego Comic Con i was excited.
The only worry i had were the titles with really long subtitles.
- Doctor Strange multiverse of madness
- Shang Chi legend of the ten rings
- Thor Love and thunder
Antman Quantumania
I dont know what it was i couldnt pinpoint it at the time. Maybe it was feeling like 70s or 80s type of titles. Slightly cringey maybe.
But now that i've seen them all theres definitely similarities between them all.
1. Is there a hero's journey in all these?
2. What is the hero protecting or saving that we can relate to?
3. Is the villain's motivation straightforward and easy to understand
4. The CGI all look similar and obvious almost like they all used the Volume. Definitely obvious green screen backgrounds. They werent completely bad but they could have been better.
I would like to hear your thoughts on these after you've watched all these
Marvel had to hold a special meeting after the drama surrounding Jonathan Majors to figure out how to move the MCU forward without Kang as the central focus, especially since the plan was to make him the next "Thanos-level" threat. They’ve even decided to rename the next Avengers film, which will no longer center on Kang. I'll not share the name of the next Avengers films, but you can look them up if you don't mind title spoilers.
Down the line, they could always recast the character since he’s such an important figure who doesn’t deserve to be sidelined because of an actor. But that’s up to Marvel. Honestly, I’m more interested in what they’re doing right now with this new direction, but I’d still love to see Kang the Conqueror return. His character was amazing in the cartoon Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, which is a must-watch animated series.
Overall, I enjoyed this film, beyond M.O.D.O.K. He's just not the character from the comics. In the source material, he’s created by A.I.M. and eventually becomes its leader. Has no connection to Darren Cross. The overall design in the film is fine, but the face doesn’t work for me. In the comics, he’s much more monstrous-looking and I think the movie design would've work better if he had hair. But yeah, at it's core, M.O.D.O.K. has always been a silly character so it's difficult to make him work in live action.
I also like to imagine that Darren Cross became M.O.D.O.K. based on Kang, who likely encountered a more comic-accurate version of M.O.D.O.K. in one of the many timelines he destroyed. Inspired by that, Kang turned Darren into his own version of the character. But this is just my headcanon. it’s implied that Kang fought a version of the Avengers, so he most likely had contact with other teams and factions.
Imagine getting the break of a lifetime and getting cast as the main re-occurring villain for the next 10 MCU film... and then blowing by getting dropped because of your actions...Ugh
Bill Murray already had serious Marvel cred going into this; he played The Human Torch in The Fantastic Four radio series in the ’70s.
Giving up on the Kang actor derailed MCU's plans a bit.
Blessing in disguise really.
Ngl it was probably for the best. If this movie was any indication, Kang wasn’t actually gonna end up that interesting.
Can you imagine they probably had 1st draft scripts for all the movies and shows that may habe Kang tied to them
@@ThePonderer But if Loki was any indication, it would've been amazing.
@@ThePonderer I'd take Kang over Robert Doomy Jr anyday
As always, thank you, Kaiielle, for the watch.
Yeah... I think what hindered this movie for me was the gut-punch that was Infinity War. Thanos won, and we lost. And, even though we clawed back part of what we lost... we still lost. So, everything that Marvel has put out since has been scarred, and tainted, and... well... diminished by that whole thing. Not that there's anything wrong with this... it was a bit much, and it was a bit chaotic, and they threw everything at us all at once, and I don't know about you, but I have a very limited attention span... I can only pay attention to one thing at a time, and only for a time. Add Super-Hero-Fatigue on top of that... and, yeah... this was a 2 for me. (Luis would definitely have helped. I missed the crew.)
Ah, well... it's okay. And, it's going to be okay. Ultimately. I guess I just wish that Marvel would have ended with Endgame, and taken a break. Then, started something completely new. (I think, when you go back and rewatch the movies, which I do on occasion, you'll find that the ones that worked the best were the first ones in each series... the origin stories. They were good stories. Good movies. One thing was happening, and we became invested in the one thing. Iron Man. Cap. Hulk. Thor... well, I still think Thor Ragnarok was my favorite of his movies. The first Avengers movie was great. But, it was their origin story. As a team.
Ah, well... like I said. It's okay. And, it's going to be okay.
Thank you, again! I hope you are having a wonderful winter!
Hey, K
FYI
Scott’s book was actually published and is available for purchase and reading. I haven’t read it, but thought I’d let you know.
:-)
We should remember these are based on comics books. Those early stories influenced scfi movies which influence this movie. Its all circular.
when I first watched this movie, I had fun but thought it was super flawed and overall not that great. But honestly, with each rewatch on my own/revisit with reactors, I soften on it and like it more. There's so many moments in it I really love and enjoy, despite the messy plot and package it's given to us in.
I might feel that way over time too!
I have found great enjoyment in all the Ant-Man films. This is my sincere perspective. I've been a fan of Ant-Man since 1987. Since 1993, I've been a fan of Kang The Conqueror.
"Legion, hello?" -- No way! Tell me you have a first-time playthrough of the ME series around here somewhere!
Not a full first playthrough. But my entire second playthrough (Renegade) is on my Twitch channel!
"Kang" will retrun in loki season 2 as a variant as seen in the post credit scene. How Marvel will end the Kang storyline in the whole MCU is still a mystery but maybe with the next movies we will find out.
In the comics, a variant of Kang fought Apocalypse from X-men in ancient Egypt.
Comic fans in 2008 might not have been so surprised by "Broccoli Man." They wouldn't have known who you mere talking about (one of the weird creatures of the Microverse), but once you get into deep cuts there's at least a few dozen people/things that could be called Broccoli Man. The MCU has barely begun to REALLY dig into the fun deep stuff. Mutant Space Truckers. The Skrull Kill Krew. The Council of Reeds/Kangs/Dooms/Mephistos. Doop.
The lack of Luis is borderline criminal. Easily my least favorite of all the Marvel films (or shows), and still it's at least a mildly entertaining 2hrs. Very glad you're sticking it out, keeping your mind open, and shooting straight as you see it!
I LOVE the MCU and have enjoyed basically everything including the shows. This movie made me fall asleep twice. What a trainwreck. I just didn't care about anything that was happening on screen, and have never enjoyed random "humor" - set the jokes up, darn it. Only funny part is how Michael Douglas doesn't seem to know where he is or what he's doing, and doesn't care 😂
perfect cut to the Doctor lol, well played
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie even though it wasn't the best, reminds me of phase 2. Though I always get the chills on some of the CGI, especially when they first enter the quantum realm, as well as the singularity after all the quantum splits at the device. Granted I do NOT get the chills when I see modok, well, maybe I do, but not in a good way.
It's not related to the MCU in any way, shape, or form, but there's a MODOK cartoon series, with a VERY different vibe. Wouldn't be worth a reaction series or anything, and it IS basically a comedy series, but I was pleasantly surprised with it. Mild recommendation for anyone looking for something kinda different.
I strive to be one of the most positive voices you’ll ever encounter re-the MCU, but if I’m being honest this is the one movie they’ve made that I flat out dislike.
I’m glad the franchise’s plans re:Kang got scuttled, cause this was *not* an impressive showcase as far as selling me on him as an interesting villain. Focusing in on him so hard also really drowned out the charms of the other two Ant-Man films.
Nice reaction, Kai
This movie was severely criticized. Specially with Kang being one of the top villains in the comics along Thanos, Ultron, etc. and the fact that he was taken down by Antman, really upset a lot of people. And people were really soured on the movie and him as a villain. But I noticed that after 2 years, people are slowly appreciating it more. It’s not top tier MCU content. But now looking back, it’s a fun watch. Specially if you don’t take it as seriously and now view Kang as a one off villain haha. This was like the “oh, Marvel is going down in quality” signal that a lot of people saw. Specially for a phase 5. But there are still a few great things in Phase 5.
Thank you for reacting to this movie 😁
Loki Season 2 was soooooooooooooooooooooooo good.
I'm excited!
It's a shame we won't get more Jonathan Majors. Kang is a great character in the comics.
Majors also starred in one of my favorite movies, Devotion. Highly recommend. It's about the first black Naval aviator.
0:26 However you DID skip watching "Agent Carter" and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." 😭 Just saw the logos before your reaction started. I see that you HAVE watched them and they are on your Patreon. I take back my comment. LOL
Haha yeah the non-Phase Marvel shows are all being watched on Patreon right now in a timeline order! I'm currently in the middle of Season 3 of Agents of SHIELD.
This movie was okay. It was really hard to focus on quantum realm, story of unknown villain(as you said we saw him in Loki season 1 finale but it was a long time ago). And there are some continuity issues for example Janet had powers and she said Quantum realm changes you. Overall movie is not boring, villain is good but his backstory is weak. But we learned from Avengers Kang Dynasty movie script that other kangs killed his family and send him into exile. And according to that story this kang still lives in that orb. Like when Scott get in there. But marvel changed the story to make a Doom movie. You probably know this but I wanted to address anyway. Thanks for reaction and comments 😊
It's true sci-fi. It had to ride the line between "of course aliens have to look weird" and "how weird is TOO weird?" Star Wars tried to make it "normal", with aliens but in locales that are otherwise mundane and familiar. The Quantum Realm has to stretch credibility, because of all that Doctor Who stuff.
MODOK in the comics is actually terrifying, genetically engineered by AIM to be a supergenius intellect with no moral complications about harm ("for killing", quote). When you're a kid, your imagination is fertile ground, and weird definitely gets attention.
I described the experience of watching this as "a movie-length, less-vulgar episode of Rick & Morty." I had a good time, but it's a weird series of choices for an Ant-Man film.
It also feels kind of like a fever dream. I think they put too much movie in the movie. No time to breathe.
There's a theory that when Kang mentions "the one with the hammer", it could have been an iteration of Captain America while he was returning the Stones and Mjolniir to their places in spacetime. I can't remember if this is just fan discussion, or if the writers mentioned it, but with a multiverse it's definitely possible either way.
This movie isn't exactly the best in the MCU but it's one of my favorites, especially among the more recent ones.
It was just so much fun. Cassie was super cool, Janet was a badass. Even Darren really fit. In another movie, I don't think MODOK would have worked at all.
Another great reaction. Thanks, KL!
It's increíble how many "That's what she said" jokes can be pulled over an Ant-Man movie
Shout out to Miles!
I'm still a super big Ant Man 2 fan, always will be
Thanks for the reaction as always KL, enjoyed watching the movie through your eyes. This movie, to me, is a confounding mess. There are parts that seem so sloppily done that I almost can't believe it's an officially released Disney product. There are elements that fully break the limits of verisimilitude -- for instance, three scientist characters keeping a project as significant as building a satellite to the quantum realm a secret from a fourth character who is also a scientist (because everybody is a scientist in this movie) so that she can never bring up the plot-breaking objection which is a secret even though it makes no sense to keep it a secret and it would make sense to consult her THE MOST out of anyone else...
During your closing you said you thought Michael Douglass was great, and that's where we most disagree. I think Hank was the weakest part of this movie, and it almost felt like he originally wasn't supposed to be in it. He just kind of wobbles in place looking like he doesn't even know what's going on and is just repeating lines someone's feeding him from off camera -- and they were also all terrible lines and unfunny jokes. "I like ants" over and over again. I think they were written on the spot.
Even his wardrobe is odd. The first half of the movie he's wearing a boxy, too-large flannel. I think he just showed up on set, they didn't have any wardrobe prepared for him, so they just left him in his street clothes for a while.
Anyway, great video!
I actually liked Johnathan Majors portrayal of Kang in this and Loki... the end credit scene with all the kangs is kind of goofy tho, but I thought he was one of the only things in this movie that was good. Also Cassie was one of the good parts in Ant-man 1-2, but the worst part of this one.
Doctor Who reference! 🔷
MODOK is pretty goofy-looking in the comics. I give 'em props for even attempting to use him as a character, but yeah, the FX could've been better. I think they should've just built a practical head-piece for the actor to wear, instead of making a weird, stretched out digital face. (This was also during the overworked era of the MCU so it was definitely rushed) But overall, I liked this movie. It could've been better, but it had some pretty funny parts. And Jonathan Majors played a good Kang. It's a shame we couldn't see him as the eventual Kang Prime variant that rules over the multiverse, but oh well.
This one was a bit of a mess. Definitely fun, definitely a cool world and really cool visuals, and Kang was a potentially cool threat. But it felt wrong for Ant-Man. The first two movies were so ground-level, small scale, goofy and silly and fun. This one was just... not the first two.
33:01 seems very topical these days...
It sure does!
This one pisses me off majorly. If it weren't for Kang, it would be a complete pile of nothing.
Especially, that they get "big" in the quantum realm. You're not big, you're still subatomically tiny, like wtf. Feels like no one, not one person thought this through.
Do you guys just put the word quantum in front of everything? LOL
If you haven't seen The Good Place, highly recommend.
So.... MODOK....
Yeah...
😂😂
M.O.D.O.K is in fact in the comics but his character is very different and as for his CGI I’m not defending this movie but it’s hard making a live action M.O.D.O.K without him looking goofy and weird
Yeah I saw a picture of comic book him, kinda still looks goofy haha
Rumor has it, Peyton Reed always wanted to direct a Fantastic Four movie but never got the opportunity. That explains why this Ant-Man film is so fantastical compared to the smaller scale of the previous two Ant-Man films, with the Quantum Realm being the setting and Kang the Conqueror as the main antagonist.
P.S. 9:57 Veb is voiced by David Dastmalchian, who played Kurt Goreshter, the Russian hacker in the previous two Ant-Man movies.
This is the movie I have the most problems with and I like the least out of all of the MCU movies, still good but the closest to bad that the MCU has gotten for me with movies anyway.
1. The freedom fighters saying "You led them straight to us" when they were the ones who captured them from the jump.
2. MODOK's whole character switch. There is no reason that he should have wanted to be an avenger. Plus the "don't be a dick, it's never too late to stop being a dick" was just cringe and also made little sense to me.
3. The non-inclusion of all of the other Ant-Man mainstays.
4. The very ill-defined Quantum realm, how it works and where it exists. Also the switch from Ant-Man 2 having them go into the quantum realm to collect energy to now having this revelation that we can't go into the quantum realm.
5. The fake stuck ending.
6. The movie did not really feel like an Ant-Man movie to me and more a movie that Ant-Man just happened to be in. I feel like the whole movie could have had any other Avengers in it and the story would have been the exact same.
The one thing that would have made the second movie was if they had Luis in it
it's crazy you watched this before S2 of Loki
Why? This comes first in the release order, which is the order I've been sticking to this ENTIRE time.
@@kaiielle no I know it wasn't criticism. That's just how it played out for me (for a long time I just avoided Ant Man movies for no particular reason, but I LOVE Loki) and I... well I guess I can't really elaborate but maybe you'll understand once you see S2
I don’t know why they keep recasting Cassie. I usually like Kathryn Newton but for some reason I don’t really like her as Cassie
MCU low point as Marvel Studios dealt with a lot of Disney bureaucracy whatnot, unexpected public relations issues, and poor decision making. It can be felt in some of this era’s output. 2025 is expected to yield the results of some needed course correction.
This movie is widely panned and pointed to as the example of the MCU downfall. The Modok character is known as one of the worst looking CGI characters of all time!!
Me through the whole movie: Dammit, Janet!
Also, the new Cassie is terrible in this movie. Every single line is delivered with this half smirk that is the hallmark of bad liars. This movie gets so much hate, but she's the only one that ruins it for me. Even MODOK, as silly as he is, seems to be comic accurate.
Definitely mixed on this but Good news is the Russo Brothers are coming back to Marvel.
This movie is so over hated for no valid reason and I’ll die on this hill. It’s goofy Ant-Man fun. Both of his movies have been goofy. We gotta look out for the little guy.
Enjoying Phase 5, frankly
*shrug*
I'm very glad you are!
@kaiielle
I do understand the complaints - some of them, anyway, that aren't complainingto be complaining - but having grown up in the comics book culture of the 80s and 90s... these MCU movies are a dream come true!
My biggest issue with this movie is that there was a huge missed opportunity no having Kang’s final move to be trapping Scott in another universe.
This would’ve given more weight to the multiverse and incursions and would’ve given us a reason to care about the multiverse, while also showing the power that Kang has to just separate a hero from the rest of the world at a moment’s notice.
I had the same issue with Dr Strange. If he became lost and unable to find his way back to the main universe, him finding Scott Lang eventually would’ve been a great way to connect the multiverse in a meaningful way.
I enjoyed this one :(
I think it was douche move to recast Emma Fuhrmann with Kathryn Newton just to get more star power... Still, this had great promise but this film screams rushed production. CGI looks half baked, plot feels off with pacing time to time. 6 more months would have done amazing for script and CGI. Unfortunate victim of studio rushing things and then all the drama with Jonathan Majors.
DRINK THE OOZE!
I don't quite know why, but I've always enjoyed watching this film. Real bummer about Majors being a douche, I really liked his performance of Kang/He Who Remains and would've loved seeing more of him, oh well! Overall I don't think it's the best movie, but also it's far from the worst.
Kang should have won
I could have done without M.O.D.O.K. terrible character, even in the comics.
I lasted about 20 mins. One of the most pointless films I've ever seen.
I realized halfway through this movie that MS had lost the wheel. The pandemic, Chadwick’s death, the writers strike, overworked CGI artists quitting….just too much.
Yeah, definitely "meh" level.
This is legitimately one of those actually bad MCU movies. I've enjoyed some of the, so called other bad ones, Thor Dark World what have you.
Jonathan Majors is great as Kang. It's a shame that he immediately fucked it up and caused the whole storyline to be thrown away.
Ummm…. Good-ish?? It's one of the most mediocre movies of the MCU which hurts because of how great it could've been. Kang is a great villain in the comics but in this it fall short. Paul Rudd still steals the show as Ant-Man, But the writing, acting, and CGI all feel off for some reason with some decisions made feeling very wrong.
