just remember the pump inlet works on vacuum! the inlet has to be under water and pipe no air leaks!.. a non return valve will ensure pump is always primed.. another thing i have seen done! is getting a deep bucket! and drill hundreds of small holes, say 5mm, in the very bottom!, then get pool noodles or bicycle inner tubes and cable tie one or two of them around the top of the bucket! place the pump inlet in the bucket, and lower the bucket down the well! the bucket should float and the holes will filter out majority of weeds, roots, frogs and insescts etc pump inlet doesn't have to be on the bottom of the well!..
Fill the green inlet pipe with water first, so you are sucking up water, not air to begin with. And add a non return valve to the bottom of the green inlet pipe to stop the water draining out every time you turn the pump off. Sucking air up 7 metres is a lot of air, as it will expand as the pump sucks it. !! It should be really easy every time. So 1. Add a non return valve to the green inlet pipe - at the bottom of the green inlet pipe 2. Fill the green inlet pipe with water before you turn on the pump 3. You should only need to do that once as the non return valve will keep the green inlet pipe full of water. (ps I had exactly the same problems when I bought a pump for the first time and I did feel like a right numpty).
When you tested the pump at Nicks the pump was below the water line so the pipe running from the water to the pump was full. At your place the water is below the pump so the water is most likely running out of the pipe and back into the well before you start the pump.
So glad you got the pump working eventually! This saga reminded me very much of a time a few years back at our place in southern Italy when we bought a pump to get the water from our under house tanks into the bathroom and kitchen. My husband slaved in the terrible heat for many hours, making some of the same mistakes you did. He eventually got it working and collapsed, exhausted onto a chair on the veranda to watch the storm that had just blown in. Low and behold, lightening struck. It struck the pump. It broke the pump. Life felt very bitter at that moment. 😂.
You need a check valve Al the end of the suction hose so it doesn’t drain back. It will be very hard to pump without it. Use a flapper type nothing spring loaded
@@projectportugal We do this with much larger portable fire fighting pumps (15hp) to get them going: keep the water inlet below the water line and then plunge / move the pipe up and down. It will help move the water up the 4m quicker but might silt up your well. Really don’t want your pump over heating or the impeller will melt/fail really quickly. Given how fire will spread in your environment I would suggest looking at “marina fire fighting caddy” from Rolec (other makes available) cost might be prohibitive but you’ll be able to pump water all around your property and have all the equipment necessary to tackle a small blaze from a safe distance and water down your roof on your property.
So glad to see things going, you deserve! Beautiful gifts, indeed! Bit by bit, it's more like a home but it's the love that truly makes a house turn into home and that, you have to spare! As always, Saint Nick comes to the rescue! Keep safe guys, have a great week!
So glad the pump is working, somehow you need to try to keep your different sources of power up to scratch as you never know when you're going to need them. I realise it's easier said than done. Good video thanks for the update. I work for a pump company so know a bit about them😁. Suction lift is hard application best pumps for this are screw progressive cavity, best manufacturers are Mono pumps or copies are seepex, netzsch and indian brand roto they can do a 8 meter suction lift. Could also fit a foot valve, this is just a non return valve down at the bottom of the inlet pipe. Gives the pump a chance to start quicker as it does not need to get rid of all the air like your experience with your current pump, with no foot valve. The pump has to create vacuum to pull the water up witch is slow. If you fit a foot valve the pump doesn't have to work as hard. Down side is if the foot valve get blocked or stuck open due to twigs / foreign mater it stops working. Only other option is a submersible pump. Remember to look at the pump curve to make sure you have enough pressure / head to overcome the system losses ie pipe run and elevation of the outlet pipe. Happy to help if you have questions
Watching others in Portugal.... they tend to not realize that the parts in the well need STRAINERS to prevent clogging. I use lake water to water my lawns here in Michigan USA. My strainer is (1st) a commercial intake, but then (2nd) I wrapped that with ordinary household screen .... at least 5 times .... preferably with any spacing material, as 1 inch balls of screen ---- all that screen will keep algae out and still let water into the intake unit.
AND you got your water pump in the end!!! Wonderful to see that you got it to work. It must be much easier for you now. All the best to you two and thank you for another super video.
Next time you try your pump prime it whilst hold a hand over the outlet see if that starts it off better. Some times it’s better to use a hose that goes flat like a fir hose type you put your foot on it and press done whilst starting the engine when you feel the pressure you just slowly lift off your foot. I’ve got two much bigger version of your pump had the same prom until I phoned the manufacturer who told me the correct priming action. Good luck!👍 Et
Yes you need a non return valve on the end of suction pipe that way the water does not drain back down the pipe had the same problem this week when my non return valve came off the pipe
I feel relieved for you that the pump problem was sorted out. I can’t even imagine how relieved the two of you must feel. But I’m so happy you can now water easier.
The pump saga had me on the edge of my seat. will it, wont it ? Perseverance paid off in the end. Let's hope the drought ends soon. I am a little nervous at this time of year because I am in England and my casa is not too far away from Castelo Branco. (About 20 Miles) I am always releaved when I go back after the heat of Summer has cooled and theres a bit of rain about.Stay safe. Great vlog
Ohhh I am so happy the pump finally worked!!! I feel your frustration, but it is now over and you got cool water coming out for all living things to enjoy!!!
The gifts you received are beautiful especially the crochet edge round the tablecloth. Success at last in getting the pump to work. Than, goodness the fire didn't reach the gas station xx
They’re really beautiful aren’t they, and add such a special addition to our home. A handmade gift is always a treasure. So happy we got the water pump working. I can’t imagine how scary it would’ve been with the fire near the petrol station! Can’t bear to think what could’ve happened. Hope you’re having a lovely weekend Gaynor and thanks for watching ☺️
Great you both didn't give up on the pump. My spouse and I stress out over new mechanical things. We always seem to have an issue. You know it's hot when the doggies don't want to explore. Good laugh watching them trot into the house. Super gifts, extra special being handmade. Cheers for some rain!!
Love the gifts, just proves gifts don't have to be expensive, when they hand made, it means so much more because it has the personal touch. YAY you have H20, saw your tomatoe plants just soaking it up.
Hi, you both have been so busy, nice to see you both at Nic and Andrea's. Glad you have a new pump, will help a lot in the heat. I've been rain dancing in N Yorks , you should get some rain soon. Stay safe.
The hose from water source to pump cannot have air in it. A non return valve on the lower end of the hose then prefill from the top and connect. Prime the pump and your good to go.
It is so hard to get a refund for something in Portugal !! And the bass beat oh how I remember that !! Seems to come from Mike's away and just reverberate down the valleys . Bonus ... You now have a petrol and electric pump system !!
Great to see the pump worked finally! The story of the staff up in the air on a forklift was priceless 😂 Something I thought of when you used the wood finish - You might already know - to avoid self-ignition: always soak used rags in plenty of water before disposing of them. Cheers from Sweden, Katarina
Great that the pump is working finally! I realy don't understand why they everywhere sell pumps without a foot valve. Waiting for so long before there comes water in the pump is really bad for the pump shaft seal. Hope you can find a good one there.

you need to prime the whole hose down to the water + the waterpump... having a tap on it so the water doesn't rush away from the pump... so fill the hose, prime the pump, turn it on, turn the tap on
Thanks Jesper, there is a non return valve in the pump so that should hold it in. Though when we filled the hose, as soon as we throw it in the well it empties. But we have it working now, just have to wait a little time for the water to get to the top ☺️
Hi carissa and iwan what will be your next project that you tackle ? My heart went out to you watching you gardening by torchlight you can see how much you love it your always doing something around your farm do you think you will have children one day ? Love your videos too 😊👍⭐️
Hi Anne, we’re planning on finishing the kitchen as soon as the summer has finished, we need to tile the floor, get the log burner and chimney installed and then start on the counters and worktop. As for kids, at the moment we don’t have any plans to, but that may change once we have a comfortable home etc. Thanks for watching!
Guys thank you so much for mentioning our work, we were traveling for a while so I didn't check the last videos you posted, but I was wondering why were people suddenly so interested in our wax... and then I found this video 😂The kitchen board is beautiful and the wax really highlighted the color and the grain of the wood ❤Wish I knew that order came from you, so I could have added a little treat for Frankie 😘
Our pleasure! We love the wax and can't wait to do some more projects with it :D ahh next time! I won't tell Frankie she missed out on a treat haha. Hope you guys enjoyed your travels xx
I felt your pain with the water pump situation! We bought one last week and took us 3 days to finally suss it out and pump water from our dam...so frustrating in this heat but at least we are both sorted now :)
That was super of Agriloja to troubleshoot the pump like that for you. The Wildlsnders recently put up their vlog of how the troubleshot their non working pump when their well got quite low. It's worth a peek to learn more about pressure, blockages, vortexes interfering with water pump function. Glad you're to have solar or motorized pump in each of your wells, great plan. Would it be worth it to get nozzles for each hose to be able to adjust your spray? Adored seeing Quality Assurance with Ewan and as they each nuzzle up to Mom.
So glad you got the pump to work. Those fires are so worrisome. I feel for those affected by them. Diego and Frankie are best buds now. Will you change your channel name to Frankie and Diogo off grid? Glad you have an Uncle to visit and help. Those grapes and blackberries look yummy. Best wishes and take care. I laughed when Grankie and Diogo went into the cabin when you asked if they wanted to go for a walk!
I'm so glad you got your pump to work! That'll be a game changer if you were previously watering by bucket! That sucks... I murdered 50 baby grape vines due to needing to bucket water. Oops. I had similar pump trauma past year with a small electrical one and I eventually gave up and got a submersible pump and it's bee great. The other one has been banished to my mezzanine, never to be seen again... though I might attempt to repurpose it for irrigation. Anyway, congrats on getting it to work! I felt your pain!
We need a pump trauma group here, it’s so tough with the water! Luckily we already had a submersible electric one that is great but I kept having to drag everything between two wells and our electric set up is not always super reliable (hopefully next spring we’ll get something similar to yours installed!) I can’t imagine having to bucket water everything, I think I’d have given up on the garden by now! Hope you’re keeping as cool as possible, today’s been a scorcher 💛🌱
Phew, that was hard going to get the pump to work! It’s probably very helpful for other people to see that it can be that tricky to get it going! You can’t beat a bit of persistence!
You may have covered this in a previous video (I’m working my way through) but how many square metres is your original stone building and kitchen extension? I’ve been looking at places 20m2 and I’m trying to visualise it in context with some places I have seen that are currently being used. Big smiles when the pump worked finally. What lovely friends and gifts also, so kind.
The barn is about 3x4 and the kitchen is 3x3 so altogether we’re about 20m2 too. It’s definitely a small space to live in but we spend so much of our time outside that it works. We’d like to apply for a small extension so that we can put in a bathroom space on the side of the barn. Good luck with your search ☺️
Do you guys ever remember seeing fire beaters in the UK national forests? I used to live near Thetford forest. They had very sturdy broom handles with old tyre rubber squares or old fibre glass fire blanket squares on the handles. They were a kind of first aid measure for fighting gorse and heath fires. Try to find an online design and make a pair of them. Also invest in a pair of fire fighting respirators or Nuclear, Biological, chemical warfare gas masks. I bought one as an escape hood for using on boats if there is a fire onboard. A particle respirator would help keep the smoke out of your lungs if you need to fire fight.
Two men saved a neighborhood during the fires in California by beating small flames with wet rags/fire beaters. While it is a lot of work, it is definitely one way to save your property in areas that are rural.
Hi! I was so happy for you when the water came through, I started clapping! 😂😂😂. What beautiful gifts you received and didn’t the wooden chopping board come up a lovely colour when you treated it. I’m wanting to buy some tea from you and saw the other week you were drinking a Japanese tea? What tips do you have for brewing it please Carissa. Sending love, please stay safe those smoke plumes are a bit worrying xxxx
you mentioned that you had a hard time cooking beans took to long. Dont know if anyone told you guys you just need to soak the beans in water over nite and they will cook normal...hope it helps love all your videos
YAY o pump success.. I have a small one that is powered by my truck battery & it wouldn't work .. I took it back to the store and said will you see if I'm hooking it up right on my truck. He hooked it up & it didn't work. 😪 Then he gave it a "Fonzie" hit and it worked. I used it once that way but next season... It won't work. And because of Covid they don't carry them anymore. I think I'll unscrew it today & see if a wire is loose.
HELLO THERE...CARISSA & IWAN...WE'VE HAD TEMPS REACHING AS HIGH AS 96 F. IT GETS THAT HIGH ALMOST EVERY SUMMER FOR SHORT PERIODS...HOPE YOUR WEATHER COOLS A BIT, PRAYING FOR COOLER CLIMES...ALL THE BEST...🙏;)
I also have a small farm on 20 acres in NorCal. Fires are serious biz and rather than try and explain I will recommend you take a look at wranglestar youtube channel. He has amazing wildland firefighting homestead prep videos and rundown of equipment. Stay safe
Hi Carrisa an Iuan.i use a pump slot I have a 4stroke Honda pump with 25mm outlet .use with garden hose short hose long hose lol works. I have one 6000 litre tank .4ibc tanks an pump from any of these for garden.ihope you sort out all issues with pumps.kind regards from Mike Newzealand.
For agricultural watering you can before 11am and after sun down, we also kept a fire extinguisher and bottle of water close by for extra measures. There was a week where there was an extreme heat wave where the restrictions were even tighter.
DIEGO/DIOGO (WHICHEVER) LOVES YOU SO MUCH FOR RESCUING HIM...BLESS THE LITTLE DEAR...SO PRECIOUS...WATER PUMP, BEHAVE THYSELF!...;)
Just watching that little dog follow you around he absolutely worships you both, he just wants to be near you all the time I hope you keep him💖

@@FrankieOffGrid Ya today is especially brutal but looks like it's going to get a bit cooler in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed!!
@@FrankieOffGrid how about a donkey and do it the old fashion way
Great video so glad the pumps working
Thank you for sharing 😁
Sweet success! 👏
Lovely video. Well done on the pump, it's very serious the fires that Portugal gets.
So pleased the famous pump actually decided to work…………patience is a virtue !!!
Thanks Susannah! Luckily we had lots of people help us to figure it out along the way! I didn’t expect it to be quite such an adventure 😆
Phew, that was hard going to get the pump to work! It’s probably very helpful for other people to see that it can be that tricky to get it going! You can’t beat a bit of persistence!
Thanks Eva! Yes hopefully if anyone is having any trouble they’ll be able to see how to resolve it ☺️ always good to share trials and tribulations 💛
Thank God you all get it to work...just need a good prime up
So happy the pump is working...ya that was essential for your property
Thanks Paula, it’s a real help for watering the garden!
It must be just too super hot, I would be leaping with joy with a water pump! :D
I remember these in our woodlands, what a great idea 💡
So glad the pump worked great video as always x
Catching up! Well done finally got that darn pump Going!
Love the headlamp! So happy to see you can see!
Thanks Ali! It’s brilliant, we can see all the way to the road from the house! 💡

nice one you guys
YAY o pump success.. I have a small one that is powered by my truck battery & it wouldn't work .. I took it back to the store and said will you see if I'm hooking it up right on my truck. He hooked it up & it didn't work. 😪 Then he gave it a "Fonzie" hit and it worked. I used it once that way but next season... It won't work. And because of Covid they don't carry them anymore. I think I'll unscrew it today & see if a wire is loose.
hi frankie you should remove the leaves from the vines that are covering the bunches of grapes
I’ve done some this year, last year every vine I did it to, the grapes fried in the sun. Lots of learning still needed.
HELLO THERE...CARISSA & IWAN...WE'VE HAD TEMPS REACHING AS HIGH AS 96 F. HERE IN VANCOUVER FOR THE PAST WEEK...EVERY DAY AVERAGING 92 F. ...WE HAVE NEVER HAD THAT KIND OF HEAT HERE ON THE WEST COAST...THOUGH, UP IN CENTRAL OKANAGAN, B.C.
Stay safe

I thought that in fire season you were not allowed any type of motor outdoors
For agricultural watering you can before 11am and after sun down, we also kept a fire extinguisher and bottle of water close by for extra measures. There was a week where there was an extreme heat wave where the restrictions were even tighter.
❤️👍
Yesss water!!!! 🙏❤️💦
nice
Põe válvula anti retorno para não estares sempre a encher tubo agua
