Ive seen a lotof knife makers in the past but this iscthe first time that ive seen a knife maker who prioritize safety ,cleanliness and neatness while working CONGRATULATIONS
It's always satisfying to watch a man who knows what he's doing! You've got a really nice flow to your work and everything is set up so you can work comfortably and efficiently, a pleasure to watch! Thanks for sharing!
You're incredibly generous with the amount you share, showing your processes. I have a nearly 16 yr old who wants to do this. He's put some wicked edges on old chefs carving knives but really wants to move into making bushcraft knives. We're looking enviously at the gear you have there, but one step at at time!
Always a pleasure Sandy. You put quite some thought into how you want to video. Great video during my coffee, eggs and potatoes this morning! You inspired me to begin my own stabilizing and remodel my shop. I now have a TurnTex chamber and the shop is about complete before the fall. Thanks again Sandy! Chad~ CK Knives
I'm hooked on watching your knife making, its absolutely fascinating to see the process and finished product. What a brilliant craftsman you are Sandy.
Sandy, Very gratifying to see how you work. Liked the Axminster APF 10 Evolution powered respirator. In the states, like respirators have a belt mounted blower assembly and the cartridges are magenta. Will check your site regularly I would like to have one of your knives.
Nice one :) There's not enough videos around on knife handle shaping. Blades are easy, we all dream about blades. Handles are the tricky bit that most don't talk about! :)
Very nice Sandy, them are some beautiful blades. I have been neglecting my B.O.V. project and firearms and will be spending my money there, but next year I would definitely like to purchase a knife made by you sir. wonderful craftsmanship, and worth every penny.
I envy you Sandy , making your living doing something you love and enjoy and can sell them as fast as you can make them . If I could go back to when I left school I would like to have been a gunsmith , or a knife maker !!! You need to take on an apprentice 😉
It is a long and dusty process mate, I have the same adjustable small vice and spend hours sat in front of it sanding away but the end product is satisfying, cheers Sandy and atb to you and yours.
Beautiful work Sandy! I was stropping the Scout you made me whilst watching. Verry relaxing after a tough day in the office! My brother can't wait to get his knife. G
Possibly a bit off-point, but I really dig the logo on your banner. Very cool! Your work is superb... but dozens or maybe hundreds of others have already commented on that. Thanks for sharing.
hey Jack, do you put Micarta handles on you knifes? I would be interested in purchasing a clasic jacklore în micarta scales! thank you and I hope to get an answer from you
What grit sand paper are you using when you sand it down and it touches the metal? I didn't see any scrapes on your metal, even though I could see it was touching it.
Are these belt sanders custom made or made to order? I have no idea where people are getting these. I’m trying to get this quality of handle shape with my ryobi and no band saw… it’s tough
Very nice Sandy as always, you're going to need a bigger box I think, it's nice to see the amount of work that goes into each knife, it makes owning one that bit more special😁
thanks for showing your work! I'd love to see in detail how you clean up the glue in front of the handle next to the blade without scratching up the blade. Even when I wipe it down after i clamp it - the liners seem to expand out a bit requiring finishing later - any words of advice?
Excellent video Sandy, thanks for taking the time to film and share 👍. Your watch caught my eye.. Which model is that with the canvas strap? Regards Robert, Huddersfield
It's a pleasure to watch your attention to detail. Very helpful as well seeing how you shaped the curvatures of the handles. Out of curiosity, what is the highest grit of sandpaper that you usually go to? My instinct is to go up to 1500 - 2000 grit before buffing the surface...but my background is from automotive bodywork and for a smooth finish, that was essential, but I've seen folk making handles stop as low as 240 and others go as high as they can. You showed using 320 grit then went back to the belt sander which looked like it had an unusually thick belt on it (may have been the angle and lighting) so was wondering if that was a finer surface of some sort? I've only recently started making knives and woodworking to a high finish is still a little like alien territory. Any way, thank you for putting these videos together, they've been hugely informative and the time you've taken to give some insight into your craftsmanship is appreciated
Great Skill and Patience Sandy, love the Green Insert sandwiched in between the handle n Tang From Start to Finish inc making a Sheath, how long would you say to Complete a Knife?
Hey sandy from Essex , lovely job sir . Funny thing is I've been doing the exact same thing all afternoon myself using the same wet & dry lol great stuff
I just recently discovered your channel. I must say that do enjoy watching you practicing your craft. Myself and a longtime friend are about to begin knife making. We will be using O-1 and our first project which will be a carving and whittler set. Do you have any words of advice for working with thinner O-1 ex.1.5mm to 2.0mm.
Beautiful work! You might consider adding a bit of dialogue overlay to infill the long silence while you work away with your multi-wheeled belt sanders (I want one!)
Hi Mike, I think it is a six inch wheel. Just right for the smaller knife. I have used a 10 inch wheel on the larger blades. It works ok but you have to be really careful. I think a 8 inch wheel diameter would be just ideal.
Hi Sandy, when sanding the scales along the spine of the knife, how to you stop the wood from staining and dirt from abrasive and tool steel getting into the grain of the wood ? a.t.b Adam
Only recently started, but the last knife I made avoided that issue by taking it to quite a fine grit, while making sure the spine was oil free, so metal particles didn't stick to the wood surface as I sanded. I guess the trick is keep it dry and work up through the grits and dirt shouldn't stick in...also if the resin glue hasn't entirely set it can also get in to the grain with metal particles...heat can melt the glue too (found that out making a wooden sheath) so be careful to not keep what you are grinding on the belt for too long and let it cool off between passes.
As usual great video. Thanks for the view of the process. I have never seen a full face mask as you were wearing. Would please let me know the manufacturer? I may be able to find one here in the States. Thanks!
I bought the dust mask from a store called Axminster over here in the UK. Not sure if it's available in your country. Not sure who the manufacturer is.
Nice video mate. Lovely to see how much time and attention to detail goes onto every knife . I can't decide which colour wood I prefer . I love em all! How's the eye is on the mend Sandy. Chris

Love watching the work ... So much more than just a manual process. I don't know if you ever get any relaxation from it, but I do when watching...
Best video for knife handle shaping. Thanks for sharing it Sandy.

Great design for handles ... not the typical coke bottle design. Makes a difference. Well done!
Very rewarding to watch a true craftsman at his trade. Thank you.
It's a pleasure to watch you work, I'm a survival intructor but also a D.D.S. Love your work!!

Thanks Shelley,
Yes I agree. I thought the green went well with the Yew wood.
@@Jackloreknives, what are the red indications on the lighter coloured wood?
I just noticed the Jacklore sign on the wall. Real quality and I wish I could afford to buy one
And this is why we would all like a Jacklore knife.

Nice work Sandy. Ive found the large extractor makes the world of difference.
I've had my extractor for about 3 years now Jason and still works well. It sometimes runs all day:)
Great video Sandy.
It shows how much skilled hand work goes into each part of your knives.

Great work. Glad to see you're now wearing a Powercap, I've used mine for eleven years and wouldn't be without it. What were the two woods?
I learned something new today. Thanks sandy.
Facinating to see the process, that is a lot of man hours in one knife. Those belt sanders look awesome :)
Thanks Garry. To build a knife to a high standard takes time thats for sure. The grinders are both Downland grinders. They have served me well.

Question. It looks like your scales are cut about 5/8"-3/4". Is that in the ballpark?
By far the best handle shaping video I have seen. Thank you for sharing! I am curious... how big is the smaller contact wheel you are using?
