This was my grandfather's favorite poem. He passed away in 2009 but I know that he would have loved this. Thank you for doing such beautiful justice to Masefield's timeless lyrics.
Brilliant!! I don't know how I ended up here but I'm glad that I did! It's a poem we learned in junior school that I had forgotten about until right now! Thankyou!
I came back to this video again in year 10 and is now using it to study for the poem I have for my annual exam I also used this video last year for my study Thx a lot Ur the best Singer I know of this poem.
You are excellent... almost ten years ago you shared this... but l watched it today....I am very happy to see &hear this... I am from BENGAL (INDIA)... Thank u so much ... it helps me...
Very nice indeed , Michael! One of my favourite poems, and you`ve done it so tastefully. A gentle, almost sad tone which fits so well to the poem. Thank you. (Denmark)
Awesome to say the least...definitely become one of my favourites....very talented well done you! John Masefield would certainly have approved and applauded!
I'm in love with your voice Michael. When you sing (and play the guitar) it reminds me of home so much it brings tears to my eyes. Thank so much for posting, you have such a beautiful voice.... ;)
Thanks so much. I'm learning the John Ireland version for baritone and piano accompaniment. This is very different, but lovely - you have a nice voice, a clever accompaniment and your guitar sonority - I don't know the make - is particularly pleasing.
Your song is wonderful. You have really captured the narrator's yearning for a sailor's life. I have a blog where I review out of copyright books and old poems. I am planning on posting something about this poem soon. Do you mind if I add a link on my blog to this video?
I know this is old, but would you be willing to share your chords, and picking pattern? It is hard for me to see in the video, bad eyesight. Beautiful job btw.
Awesome. This is my favourite poem. I've never heard it sung before. My friend is a musician and a sailor, this song is perfect for her. Any chance of getting the chords?
Sea Fever (John Meinsfield) I MUST go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.
WOW! Michael. I too know this poem, in many musical guises. Your technique is so refined and calm. I notice from the comments a lot of people ask for the score/chords. Have you written it down? Would very much like to score it for you, if you haven't. Beautifully created and performed, chap. G
By the way that link to your homepage does not seem to work any longer. Do you happen to have some sheet music of your beautiful rendition of Masefield´s poem?
