Nobody is saying that you are anyone else in Oklahoma has to subscribe to Christianity if they don’t want to, but the kids should at least know about the history of our country and how many biblical ideas have been used to inspire the founding of the country. If you look at our money it says In god we trust. There are many other examples such as in the Supreme Court has the Ten Commandments. Again, so I’m clear, nobody is forcing anyone to believe in a specific religion (in this case Judeo-Christian beliefs) from the Bible but it’s more about focusing on how the Bible helped shape the United States from a historical perspective during its origins. If you don’t want to read or believe in the Bible that is your choice of the individual.

If a history teacher (I would like to know who they are) really needs to do a bible study to talk about the letters of MLK JR then I am not sure they are teaching History, but religion. If a teacher really feels this is essential to instruction of history, then have parents sign a signature allowing for such a discussion to occur. First person he mentions is Thomas Jefferson, who literally had a Bible that he cut out all of the references to anything supernatural in it. Then there is Ben Franklin: 'Lighthouses are more useful than churches.' A lot of the founders were trying to separate church and state and weren't a fan of the traditional church. There should be freedom of religion, but there should never be a state-sponsored religion. End of story. If his point is that he wants to reference the Bible in history with respect to how it influenced people, then he'd better be advocating for all of the quotes against the church from the founding fathers too. And highlight the Salem witch trials

Thomas Jefferson did create his own version of the Bible, (commonly known as the Jefferson Bible, officially titled "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth." )
Contrary to the belief that he cut up the Bible to remove the supernatural, Jefferson's primary purpose was to distill the moral teachings of Jesus. He focused on the ethical and philosophical aspects of Jesus' teachings.
Jefferson, a Deist, was interested in the moral philosophy of Jesus rather than the religious dogma or supernatural claims. He used this version for personal study and reflection, emphasizing the practical and moral instructions of Jesus as a guide for living a virtuous life.
the bible is many different types of literature. history, biography, parable stories.

Seems the Superintendent is advocating pick & choose to defend your position. Does he not know it was President Thomas Jefferson who strongly believed in "separation of church and state", his phrase not the wording in the Constitution. Does the Superintendent not know that President Jefferson wrote his own version of the Bible, for his own reflection, excluding most of the miracles of Jesus and references to Jesus as divine. Does he not know that Jefferson is often characterized as a founding father who leaned towards Deism. If so Superintendent, read up on it, you may find an answer to your question "Where did Jefferson come up with...?" and you might learn how he viewed the Creator.

What makes a country sovereign is not its own pronouncement but rather recognition from other sovereign states. The natural law in the Declaration of Independence would be familiar to the rulers and leaders of European states as a sound justification to recognize the new country, untied to England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.
Jefferson mocked the miracles recorded in the Bible, and he and John Adams enjoyed ridiculing the religious for their unthinking ways.

Its place is in a theology class! Not a history class and certainly not a science class! The US is not a theocracy it is a secular republic based upon democratic principles. So perhaps it may be more germane to be learning more about those principles, the emergence of peloponesian democracy, perhaps of Solon, or Drakon and the history of democracy. Would it then be imperative Then should by extension of your former logic would you consider it imperative to contextualise religious faith of the founders of these democratic principles, expanding upon and teaching the tales of the Greek pantheon. Extrapolation of the argument can obviously lead to problems, which if extended reach ad absurdum. It really isn’t necessary to teach scripture as a foundation of history. It’s being used as an excuse to continue the propagation of religious doctrine into secular education beyond the bounds of study of Christianity in comparative theology.

There’s a reason Thomas Jefferson advocated for a clear separation between church and state-it’s embedded in the Constitution. The government is prohibited from endorsing any single religion. Forcing children to be indoctrinated in one particular faith is a direct violation of that principle. If the governor allows this, then he must also allow the Quran to be taught as divine truth and the Vedas as the inspired word of God. After all, with over 18,000 deities and 4,000 religions in existence, cherry-picking one to promote is nonsensical and shows more loyalty to religious institutions than to any true divine entity. I highly doubt that most reasonable parents want their children to be taught that a man who believes a mysterious voice-or a powerful political figure-commands him to murder his son is a hero. You know, like the story of Abraham and Isaac.

The history of the Bible, taught purely from that point of view could be good, but add in the Vedas of India, and the Early Buddhist Sutras too, so that there's a broad, international religious curriculum, so pupils can see the Bible in context.Psalm 130 could last a whole term, with world music, percussion classes and dancing, of different world styles. A whole other term could be contrasting and comparing the Epic of Gilgamesh with the Noah story, and with younger children, they could say what animals they;d like, and which ones they'd leave behind ( flies, cockroaches, wasps, spiders?) You don't have to Christian to know that the Bible is an important , world literary work, of great importance, and it can be introduced in that way.
