A lot of people never realized that the Joe Satriani signature JS series were all based on this guitar. Now if we want this body style from Ibanez we need to buy a JS signature. It would be nice if they offered this again with the variation in colors and bridge and pickups they had before it became a JS signature. It would give more options outside of the JS series configurations. It would be what the RG550 is to the Jem.
Wtf “I’m not paying $350”...!!! They’re like all fucking over a grand and only one or two for sale in the whole world!! It’s not some basic cheap Ibanez it’s a 540R!!! It’s legendary !!!
Yesterday I came into a local used guitars store, met this thing and fell in love completely. Gathered all the money I could find together and today I will buy it. Its model year is 1990 and I can't see big differences between '88 and my one
This video had me doing a search of who played ibanez guitars, there is a wiki page devoted to this and it's a pretty broad spectrum of players I remember music shops in the 80's seem to have the ibanez posters up of who ever was signed to their guitars, I think there was a Paul Stanley poster, but hell it was a long time ago Nice playing as always, the quiet stuff was also nice and great guitar info and insight. You seem pretty comfortable with this guitar
It's an old video, I know. But to think someone could ever score an early Radius model for under 3 bills is ridiculous now in 2023. I buy everyone I find for under $500 with little regard to condition. The neck on those models is the best neck profile Ibanez ever made in my opinion. They screwed it up a little late in the production run by using a Wizard neck, but it doesn't matter. Soon after that the Radius and the Ultra neck was no more. FYI, I suspect the neck profile on the Prestige AZ models is the same at the Ultra neck. If not, it's really close.
I've got an '89 540R HH in Jewel Blue. Modded it cuz I didn't get on with the knobs and the pickups but it's a sweet guitar, got some crazy flame in the neck too.
I realize this video is old, however I feel the need to correct the statement about the headstock and the logo.....I bought the black and red striped one in the summer of 1987, I still own it....it still has a small sticker on the back of the headstock below the serial number that says "PRO540R" I paid close to $800.00 with a hard case.... anyway....on the headstock below the IBANEZ logo it says ROADSTAR SERIES....and it does have the three individual pickup selector switches.....very fast and accurate pickup selection....the "pot" switch on the tone knob splits the humbucker bridge pickup. I have pictures available....this guitar has never been out of my possession and everything is as it came from the factory.....
In 1992, I was torn between the 540R and the 540S. I ended up getting a 540SLTD (which I still own). It's from that odd period where they were assembling mass market guitars out of their custom shop. I still want to get a 540R. As for the trem spring resonance, I usually just lay a small stack of tissues in between the plate and springs. It seems to work fairly well.
I suppose these days the cheat to learning the notes is use one of those little clip on tuners which are $5 bucks now. But maybe all that will give you is a lazy ear which is what your trying to train to know the notes
Love this guitar. You sure know when to take the plunge! The pickups are ver quiet and no noise, uness your noise gate is on. When you played clean sounded like a Teecaster, the body loos fantastic. I remember this axe and could never afford it but several guitr buddies had them. Great video, budyy! Keep the beard!!! Winter is here (laugs!)
Got spring noise? Try cutting the air tubing for fish tanks the length of your springs, and simply slide them in the middle of the springs. It's a perfect snug fit and the springs expand and contract flawlessly around them!
I get a lot of remarks from folk every time I have a little dance with the whammy. "Oh that's so out of date, so 80's". Bollox!!! It's cool as f**k and still very relevant.
$260….. you basically stole that one. Just bought one in fountain blue for 540 (right?) Great guitars. Btw if anybody is wondering: the neck is called “Ultra”. 17” board, but a little fatter and not as wide as say a wizard.
i got one ,its been played to death ,lent to an idiot who dismantled it ,retreived and rebuilt with xxl jumbo frets and an invader..its beat up,covered in nail polish, but i LOVE IT TO DEATH,the trem arm is a mixture of washers ,breadclips, and its had it...cant get another trem...i wonder if you know know, can i put an aftermarket floyd rose in it,coz i cant get a trem arm ...?the radius live played at mad volume hitting harmonics through russian valves to outlaws ..just in the zone ...anyone knows if i can replace the floyd rose ?...its worth it.
Great video! My family was an Ibanez one growing up: my "step-up" Bass from my first beginner was a "Unused Used" SR-800 in Jewel Blue, and my Brother stepped-up to an '89 (?) RG-550 in Heather Grey that was marked a Second but we *never* found the finish flaw that made it so. I added to mine a few years later with the same "Unused Used" '97 SR-1206 Six-String Bass - Korean by then, but still a hell of a Bass. Those two were "My Girls" and I was an "Ibanez Guy" for a solid decade until I had an "Mid-Bass Crisis" and moved onto Customized Spector Bolt-On models w/ Custom Single Coil pickups (as I refer to them: "SpectorJazzes") and Mike Lull Modern 4, 5 & 5PJ Jazz Basses. I *still* have my Ibanezes, though - I don't think I could get enough from selling them to lose the memories, even though they're not players anymore. (it's also truly amazing how much better a "Beginner's Guitar/Bass" are these days, however: PRS' SEs & new SE Standards, Squire and even Epiphone's are far better than ones first Instrument in the '80s. My first P-Bass Copy was C-R-A-P CRAP! for what you can get a truly good "Starter Bass" these days.)
As much as I wanted to watch this video, I couldn't because the goddamn guitar is like 15 times louder than steve's voice. It's either hear him talk and wake up the entire house with the constant noodling, or hear the guitar normally and have no idea what steve's saying. Disappointing.
There might be the rare exception, but I would tend to think that the odds of getting jacked over a guitar buy would be much, much lower than say, a vehicle. Criminals are gonna wanna maximize the money you bring to the buy, so they stick to really pricey multi-thousand dollar items. So as long as you're not buying Les Pauls from dudes on craigslist, you're probably okay. Though I'd still bring a knife, heh.
Just had a horrible experience on reverb.com. Ever since I saw that Radius you got, i've been looking for one. Saw one on there the guy was asking 450.00 and it had some dings and chips on the body, but the neck looked good. and it was a Japanese 89'. I wanted it. I was waiting him out, thinking if he didn't sell it for 450, maybe I could get him to come down a little on the price.. Instead of doing that, this idiot. sells the neck off of it for 150. I had to tell him what a bone headed move that was. To me, the guitar is now worthless. What do you think? It broke my heart.. instead of taking my offer for 375-400. I would have paid the 450. I was just waiting him out a little to see if he got an offer, which the only offer he had gotten was the 150 for the neck. What a douche right? Or am I over reacting?
Pixxy, really been enjoying your uploads where you talk about these 89's guitars. It's such an easy going way of talking about things. Keep up the good work!
Great guitar Steve, makes me miss my Ibby I had back in the day even more....Same p'ups, bridge/trem, mine was the Sabre 540, 3 on/off mini-toggles, stacked 'buckers in middle/neck, coil tap on the bridge (vol knob). Mine was black cherry in color, which in certain lighting would look like a totally different color....My parents bought it new for me in '88 for a graduation present....Wish I'd kept it now, like all the other stuff over the years....Great vid dude, keep 'em coming!!!!!
I had one of those gd I sold it so so stupid. It had maple freet Bord, sunburst into almost crimson, Joe sat, body baddest hottest pick ups,gun meatel neck plate.ohh, I get sick thinking about wtf I've done.it was cherry cheery. It was now that I look back,my best favorite guitar I owned.heavy, I year later after I sold it,at the same shop I bought it, it came back, gd it! Some kid got a hold of it and wreeked it.I almost cried, I felt like dolly Parton's son, and she winged me. Lol
Just purchased an Ibanez Rg4exfm1. I love the HSH configuration on it. Curious on your thoughts on this Rg series. Do you like the Infinity pickups? Thanks for all your videos and providing some great insight on guitars and music.
I have a 1987 540R on my bench right now. It sat for many years not being played in the closet of the owners son. The owner reacquired the guitar, and brought it to me to have it restored. The guitar has brought back many fond memories. Thanks for the vid.
Bruce Arnold has made an extensive library of ear training resources, he's a Berklee guy that studied with Charlie Banacos. Thanks for the great videos keep up the good work!
Hi mate ,I'd really like your opinion ,I'm looking at a 91 model 540r ltd custom in the same colour as this for 800 au dollars, And also a mint rg570 neon purple colour for 950 au dollars ,,which of these are the better guitar ,and I'm not sure what the 91540r led custom is worth both these guitars are mint ,but I have to buy one of them ,I'd really like your opinion cheers Ron in Australia
Bought one from 94 for 600$. Well, it is super comfortable guitar, very slim neck, perfect Floyd rose (better than later version by Ibanez and better than original FR). For my taste, this guitar is perfect if you want to play something like Satriany or DragonForce. Because of thin neck, I can play on it faster than on my LP. Two singles together give a nice "glassy" sound like a telecaster, while bridge pickup is dark a well balanced. The sound is a bit squeaky like many Ibanez.
Hey Steve, really enjoy the videos. You seem to be one of the most knowledgeable guitar "dudes" on the "Tube". Soooo, here's my question: A few years ago I stumbled upon an Ibanez SZ520QM which is very clean. Being a life long drummer and an armchair guitarist, I've kept it in the case except for an occasional living room showing. Can you give some idea of value, quality (as Ibanez guitars go) and should I hang on to it, does it have any trade value? I realize it's a hard question sight unseen, but as stated, guitar is very clean, no issues...except for a setup. Thanks.
Cool sound man! I'm actually suprised I foud an old s540 users here. I have one of these made in Bensalem, exactly the same nice red colour, the only different is the dots size, mine guitar has small dots whitch according to the Ibanez wiki dates around 1987. Unlike my favorite s540 model (mahogany body) these ones sounds beautiful in clean tones. The only issue I have with this guitar is that the E string tend to slip off the fretboard sometimes while pulling strings. Thanks for posting. Keep Rocking!
Have same guitar but I sanded it down. Basswood 4pc body. The neck was toast so I ordered a new one - maple w/maple board oval inlays with Custom Made at 12th fret. IBZ/USA p'ups. Refined it a diff color at each glue line from light green to blue to purple. Cool axe.
I dig the hell out of pixxy, but I would like to hear just one of his gem guitars and that's most of them through a tube amp clean and with an overdrive pedal. That will give you the guitar's true tone. Hey, not to say the rig5 stuff doesn't sound good ,but it's not organic.
scored a 1987 540p for 400 dolars.it is heavily modifed though.body turned into a s type body With edge trem.hs instead of hss With tone zone and a random dimarzio single coil with a flamed maple top.
Hi (ter) ; i will never understand why Ibanez discontinued that model, it was to the JS that the RG is to the JEM. Hope to see a model in good state one day to buy it. Thank you for your sympathetics videos !
Maybe a bit too high, $600-700 would be more it's value today. I'm picking up a 440R soon for £600 but it has been newly refretted and has Dimarzio Breed + HS-3 + Air Norton pickups.
No, "sensor" with an s. UA-cam uses software that reads the audio pattern and matches is to a database of songs provided by record companies. If the song matches closely enough, I'll get a copyright strike or the video will be banned in certain countries (or all together). I've had one video banned in the US, one banned in Germany, and two where the audio was muted almost immediately. Some have no problem at all. It's all up to the owner/publisher and their rules set with UA-cam.
man i love the way the clean sounds i more of a clean player man because i like to here everything that comes to get the full effect but the distortion sounds fabulous man you must have a lot of stuff to make it sound or i dont know how to use a amp lol
hey scruffy..wth.. maybe a Jeremiah Johnson video in a log cabin is next..lol.. but can you possibly do a video with the guitar rig 5 updates.. I just updated mine but haven't yet discovered what was new..I think new patches were added..
Steve you should do a tutorial on how to buy a guitar, you of all people would be great! Like what to look for and be cautious of, especially when buying online or meeting someone on craigslist.
Hi Steve, just like to say i'm a big fan of your videos and picked up a lot of info from them. I first got onto your channel when browsing the net for Chibson info. Took the plunge after selling a Mexican strat and i'm glad to say I scored lucky with a 'Slash' pauly which is very good!! Did a DIY 'VOS' job on it to take the sheen off and it looks and plays great (no scarf joint on the neck : ). Rock on dude!!!
A fellow colleague of mine and I went to our local guitar store on our lunch break to just jam. Whilst we were there a salesman came over when I was jamming and testing out the new Line 6 amp. It was a blast until he came over. He said play a "solo" and check this out. So, I did, I just played Iron Mans solo. I felt though that hes probably heard that same thing at least 10 times or so that day. what do you think I should play when in that predicament? Or when your just jamming?
It's only weird if it doesn't work, and it worked. Doing the shave off on Monday? Road trip? Nice. Is E U Wurlitzer still on Newbury St by Mass Ave? I always loved going in there just to hear the Berkley kids jam. Beautiful guitar, Steve. Thanks for putting it on.
Hi Steve Big fan of your videos from across the pond. Would love you to do a "Life Story" Vid You are obviously musically trained but why aren't you a professional musician? what do you do for a living? be great if you could fill in the blanks (or have I missed it on a previous vid?) Regards Mark PS we need a Tele review :-)

the body on the Radius is even better than the new JS bodys, my JS1600's body(mahogany) is not at all as "shaved" at the elbow as your 540 ... u buy that for 260? i get like...time for the bay..... stacked pups sound real nice... is it Grig5? i use almost only TH2 now.. think it is real good..yea i love Grig also ..great riffin btw :)
I just came across your channel and checked it out. Saw some of your videos and im SUBSCRIBING! I think your videos are aewsome man! Just what i like to watch, a little better than guitar worlds channel. Thax man! GO REDSOX!
When I saw the guitar at the very star of this video I though humm that looks like a J.S,thanks for mentioning that. I was looking for a J.S but if they are basically the same it gives me more options.
Hey Pixx! Huge fan of ur playing! Would you have fun on a showcase of your Top 5 licks? maybe with tutoirial :D You got some great karma dude. greets from germany!!
A video with that answer can be found in his channel uploads. Steve has done several videos outlining his signal chain, including one fairly recent tour. He's (usually) running into Guitar Rig 5, sound straight from PC, to tabletop mixer, to camera audio input. Great vid Steve! Cheers!
I love all your videos, Steve!, I was wondering, where do you buy your guitars? I can't understand where you get it... Damn my mexican ears! hahahaha You are the best!
10 years late, but if you still care: The radius actually has a 17” Ultra neck, so you’ll like that a lot better (flatter) than the 9.5” JS models. Ultra is not thin as a wizard but just as flat.
Hey, Steve...good job. This guitar reminde me the Good times on Testament. Alex Skolnick haves one....one question: how big you are? The guitars look like a toy in your hand...
A lot of people never realized that the Joe Satriani signature JS series were all based on this guitar. Now if we want this body style from Ibanez we need to buy a JS signature. It would be nice if they offered this again with the variation in colors and bridge and pickups they had before it became a JS signature. I absolutly agree with that ; and i would say more : it would have been better to discontinue the JS and to keep the Radius series.
I prefer this guitar to the JS series
yep
I ve got the 87, with 3 toggles.
Indeed. The 540R was the guitar Joe used to record Surfing with the Alien!
Wtf “I’m not paying $350”...!!! They’re like all fucking over a grand and only one or two for sale in the whole world!! It’s not some basic cheap Ibanez it’s a 540R!!! It’s legendary !!!
I used to go to the shop and stare at this guitar in 1988. I can't imagine a better or more comfortable Ibanez than this one.
Dude! You always find the unbelievable prices!
I call bull shark 1 way or another on some of those as the years have gone by!
Yesterday I came into a local used guitars store, met this thing and fell in love completely. Gathered all the money I could find together and today I will buy it.

JS1000 (2005) is one of the most amazingly crafted guitars I've ever owned. Joe put his name on it after many changes.
MrDream5 I'm a proud owner of an 05' js1000 :)
I have one in midnight blue.....I love it...I bought it new back then....they are kinda rare ....thats what Ibanez employee told me
Jesus get a LOUDER Microphone!! Can't even hear you!
Clean tone of this one is perfect for modern (but old too) funk! Plug in straight in to a mixer or a clean amp and you got it.
love the distorted sound but I'm particularly impressed by the clean tones this beast delivers, around 9:20 sounds phenomenal!
I have this model in black and love it!!!! Not a fan of the newer JS models.

i have a 540PII from 1990.I'm looking for a 540S (the 1987 one it's my favorite) and a 540R but here in europe they are rare :(
I have a 1991 442r... Look a lot like this one except it's not a Floyd...
It's my favorite guitar....
I like this guitar. I just scored an RG570 in Jewel Blue. It's awesome. $380 shipped.
I found the same guitar for 890 $ in great condition what do you guys think 🤔?
Maybe a bit too high, $600-700 would be more it's value today. I'm picking up a 440R soon for £600 but it has been newly refretted and has Dimarzio Breed + HS-3 + Air Norton pickups.
I have one,88 Jewel Blue got it 93-94 - It also have an Backstop - at that time it was something very new to me:)
They were similar. The radius was no more in 92 or something. Then the js came out and was slightly different.
The tilt neck joint with the square heel and back plate is cool but the AANJ is definitely made to play the higher frets with more ease and comfort.
man i love the way the clean sounds i more of a clean player man because i like to here everything that comes to get the full effect but the distortion sounds fabulous man you must have a lot of stuff to make it sound or i dont know how to use a amp lol
hey scruffy..wth.. maybe a Jeremiah Johnson video in a log cabin is next..lol.. but can you possibly do a video with the guitar rig 5 updates.. I just updated mine but haven't yet discovered what was new..I think new patches were added..
Steve you should do a tutorial on how to buy a guitar, you of all people would be great! Like what to look for and be cautious of, especially when buying online or meeting someone on craigslist.
In this video he said he got the Ibanez 540R on craigslist. Generally steve says he gets his guitars on craigslist, ebay, and chinese online vendors.
looks like a JS. and man it's tiny
I have one in the best color Shocking Pink with a maple fretboard
Hi Steve, just like to say i'm a big fan of your videos and picked up a lot of info from them. I first got onto your channel when browsing the net for Chibson info. Took the plunge after selling a Mexican strat and i'm glad to say I scored lucky with a 'Slash' pauly which is very good!! Did a DIY 'VOS' job on it to take the sheen off and it looks and plays great (no scarf joint on the neck : ). Rock on dude!!!
I love you man! In a brotherly way....I love your stories. KEEP ROCKIN!!!!!
Love my 88 540S. Same pickups, and they are still some of the best sounding ones I have. Love the single coils.
Your tone is way better than Joe satrianis
Hi Steve
Big fan of your videos from across the pond. Would love you to do a "Life Story" Vid
You are obviously musically trained but why aren't you a professional musician? what do you do for a living? be great if you could fill in the blanks (or have I missed it on a previous vid?)
Regards
Mark
PS we need a Tele review :-)
the body on the Radius is even better than the new JS bodys, my JS1600's body(mahogany) is not at all as "shaved" at the elbow as your 540 ... u buy that for 260? i get like...time for the bay..... stacked pups sound real nice... is it Grig5? i use almost only TH2 now.. think it is real good..yea i love Grig also ..great riffin btw :)
I just came across your channel and checked it out. Saw some of your videos and im SUBSCRIBING! I think your videos are aewsome man! Just what i like to watch, a little better than guitar worlds channel. Thax man! GO REDSOX!
Really looking forward ear training videos.
I notice you have something growing on your face there lol! Awesome video btw man!
Fender non Fender ? Leo ... Nobel
When I saw the guitar at the very star of this video I though humm that looks like a J.S,thanks for mentioning that.
I was looking for a J.S but if they are basically the same it gives me more options.
Hey Pixx! Huge fan of ur playing!
Would you have fun on a showcase of your Top 5 licks?
maybe with tutoirial :D
You got some great karma dude.
greets from germany!!
The pickups sound a little jazzy
Have you ever gotten hold of an '87 or '88 540P?
A video with that answer can be found in his channel uploads. Steve has done several videos outlining his signal chain, including one fairly recent tour. He's (usually) running into Guitar Rig 5, sound straight from PC, to tabletop mixer, to camera audio input.
Great vid Steve! Cheers!
I love all your videos, Steve!, I was wondering, where do you buy your guitars? I can't understand where you get it... Damn my mexican ears! hahahaha You are the best!
now there 700ish
and now even 900ish
Great Vid as usual. The Beard has Magic powers, not only did the Red Sox win but New England beat my Miami Dolphins !!!!!.
fuck yeah! sounds fucking sick
Great Video Steve, I have a 540P which is the one before the R model I believe. Satch plays one on the Always with you..video.
9:57. Thought you were gonna to jump into 316 there.
One of these will hopefully be my next guitar purchase
The Radius and S-Series are the best values for the money of any guitar on the used market right now!
Real men dont shave,
Nice beard, great demo as usual. What headphones do you use? Can you recommend some decent ones?
Thanks
Does the Radius have the rounded radius fret face like the JS series? One reason I couldn't get into the JS series I like a flat fret board.
10 years late, but if you still care: The radius actually has a 17” Ultra neck, so you’ll like that a lot better (flatter) than the 9.5” JS models. Ultra is not thin as a wizard but just as flat.
Wasn't Satriani endorsing the 540P when he first came to Ibanez in '87?
I think he used a 540P with the 3 pickup toggle switches , as it shows in the dreaming 11 album cover.
Awesome Teaser on Ear Training ! Cant Wait.By The Way Are You Joining ZZ Top?
One piece of advice, never bring a knife to a gun fight.
Wtf is ur point
Manic Depression, Third Stone from the Sun... Hi, from Cardiff, Wales ;-)
i can't wait for those eartraining videos. about time i devellop my ears a little! thanks man, great video!
I’m concerned about the beard. I think it’s time for an intervention.
Will BeardTober give way to Movember ...
Nice sounding guitar i love it. =)
You're the best man. Bringing the axe community together once again :D
; )
Actually it's Satch Boogie he playes the 540P on my mistake
Hey, Steve...good job. This guitar reminde me the Good times on Testament. Alex Skolnick haves one....one question: how big you are? The guitars look like a toy in your hand...
How big are you??? And you wonder why he never answered
Another great vid and awesome axe/deal, Steve!
Rock on - JC
Rockin' the beard myself for the World Series....go Sox!
