As a guitar player I've always appreciated bass players. I've always set my tone to lean towards mids so the bass could cut through and lock things down. Also, I never wanted guitar to dominate and always gave bassists an opportunity to solo and really tear it up. I love the sound of bass and how the instrument has evolved over the years. Bassists are actually far more open minded and creative than guitarists on average. It's guitarists who are hung up on old, vintage guitars, pickups, tube amps, etc. Bassists have always been more open minded to active electronics, variations in scale length, number of strings, etc. Bassists are having more influence on guitarists than the other way around. Also, speaking of King's X, whom I've been a fan of since 1987, is the very essence of the power trio. In that band there is total synchronicity, and everyone holds their own. I love it. The best experience I ever had in a band was in a trio. I love the very direct energy. I never liked being in a band with a frontman running around like David Lee Roth or Axl Rose. I just find that annoying. A trio is all about the music. Rush is yet another classic trio.
dUg is the GODFATHER of modern rock/metal bass tone. There would be no Nolly Getgood. There would be no Darkglass Electronics. I've been chasing dUgs tone since the song Visions. Finally getting close now that the rest of world has caught up. dUg should be in the top 10 of any rock/metal/prog. bass player list.
@Bigscott4130 Thanks for your feedback. I'm a guitar player, but I have a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass. I would love to write some bass riffs with the dUg tone. It's just massive
that's when i knew about Dug when i first read about him and king;s x them and the galactic cowboys another underrated bass player as well , Monty Colvin in an issue of Bass player in the 90's
I've met Dug twice a very nice and humble person. Right after seeing Kings'x here in Wichita, Kansas. I was blown away with their sound. Until you see them live, then you really haven't heard them. A very underrated band indeed.😢
One of THE MOST underrated musicians, song writers, vocalists ever. So many people out there don't even know. What an absolute legend, and he will always be to me.
Dude, your bass sound is perfection. I absolutely love your playing. I've been listen to King's X since '88 and EVERY time I hear you play I'm like "OMG that sound!" So magical.
seems crazy that when King's X was in their classic period making albums like Gretchen, Dug was 40 years old. when he was yelling "give me a dollar, give me 50 cents!" at woodstock he was pushing 45!
Doug, I've been so impressed with your work (& blood, sweat & tears), and you've influenced my attitude you show here. I had it before, you put it more eloquently. Your attitude (and acceptance) is basically spot-on & sharing the emotions are so important. I don't remember where we met on social media, but I love talking & listening to you. You are a great human. *happy dance!*
Great interview. Saw Kings X Back in the early days @ Studio One in Newark NJ , Galactic Cowboys opened ...... Great Show ! Glenn Hughes Ia Another Singer / Bass Player Who is underrated
Dug is awesome. His whole thing about bass platers in the 80’s getting lost in the mix is so on point. Reminds me how Cliff Burton got lost in the mix on early Metallica albums.
He does not play his Hammer 12 string much any more but I was lucky enough to see Kings X live at the HOB in Hollywood in the early 90's and they were amazing and the THUNDER ⚡ that comes from the 12 string bass biamped the way dUg was using will melt your face off!
In 2006 I-A KING'S X devotee-was @ 3 of them Living Colour concerts dUg talks about.Amsterdam-The Paradiso/Zoetermeer-De Boerderij/Dortmund-Domicil(Germany)Frikken awesome energetic gigs! There are some clips 2 B found on youtube: tags > Living Colour , Doug Pinnick , 2006 , europe.
Oh my gosh, the host can’t be a bassist or he would know we cringe when people say “Slappa da behs “. But thank you for a great interview with the great Doug Pinnick.
As a drummer the bass player better bring the goods. I'm a fan of Allan Woody, John Entwistle, Doug obviously. Les, Jaco, Billy S. Bottom line I love a bass player who's not afraid to step out front!!
Imagine the sound of PRIMUS, JOY DIVISION, WEATHER REPORT or MOTÖRHEAD with different bass players? Can you imagine THE WHO without The Ox? Bass and drums are the backbone of every (good) band.
Lead singing bassists: Paul McCartney(Beatles/Wings), Peter Cetera (Chicago), Jermaine Jackson(Jackson 5/Jacksons), Merrill Osmond(The Osmonds), Tom Evans(Badfinger), Benjamin Orr(The Cars), Geddy Lee(Rush), Sting(The Police), Dug Pinnick(King's X), Rick James, Lemmy(Motorhead), Pat Vegas(Redbone), Phil Lynott(Thin Lizzy), Gene Simmons(KISS), and many more.
Mr Pinnick is so honest. I was thinking female bass players who sing seem to get famous if they're seen enough. It's a powerful thing. My fave for sure Johnette Napolitano. Siren. I read where Roy Johnson picked Fender Precision in the big band run by legend Lionel Hampton. That was first on stage adventure. GRINDER BLUES is sweet!
Bass players went away in the 80's? I think Geddy Lee, Flea, John Deacon, Louis Johnson, Sting, Chris Squire, Bernard Edwards, John Taylor, Steve Harris, Duff McKagan, and Cliff Burton were pretty damn prominent.
Here is a list of not underappreciated bass players. 1. Roger Waters 2. Doug Pinnick 3. Nikki Sixx 4. Flea 5. Justin Chancelor 6. Billy Sheehan 7. Steve Harris 8. Frank Bello 9. Dave Ellefson 10. Cliff Burton 11. Duff Mckagan 12. Jeff Ament 13. Les Claypool 14. Getty Lee 15. Rex Brown 16. Lemmy 17. Peter Steele 18. who in the hell thinks bass is unimportant? 19. And the real music fans appreciate bass players! And the list goes on and on

Doug is the man. King's X is underappreciated.
if you are a bass player and feel invisible just stop playing in the middle of a song and watch the whole thing collapse around you.

The bass tone on the entire Dogman record blows my fuckin' mind
Do you like the dUg pedal from Tech 21?
@@steverherb I love the DP-3X. It's an "always on" pedal.
@Bigscott4130 Thanks for your feedback. I'm a guitar player, but I have a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass. I would love to write some bass riffs with the dUg tone. It's just massive
Doug does it 100.
He sings like he's not playing bass & plays bass like he's not singing.
Very few bass player/singers can pull that off.
dUg IS the most underrated and IS the greatest.
that's when i knew about Dug when i first read about him and king;s x them and the galactic cowboys another underrated bass player as well , Monty Colvin in an issue of Bass player in the 90's

What about Tom Araya or Phil Lynott as bassists who were their bands' singers?
Hadn't had the access if their bands weren't so large for so long. You can name lots of them, but keep that in mind.
Araya was mentioned in the interview
Dude, your bass sound is perfection. I absolutely love your playing. I've been listen to King's X since '88 and EVERY time I hear you play I'm like "OMG that sound!" So magical.
Totally agree! dUg's tone is freaking awesome
seems crazy that when King's X was in their classic period making albums like Gretchen, Dug was 40 years old.
when he was yelling "give me a dollar, give me 50 cents!" at woodstock he was pushing 45!
dUg’s tone is one of the most recognizable in music…I believe dUg belongs right up there with the best!!
Phil Lynott was my fav singer/ bass player in the early 80ies... then came Doug

Glenn Hughes Ia Another Singer / Bass Player Who is underrated
I used to help run Studio 1- King's X were a favorite there!
I saw them there many, many years ago. That was a helluva show!
Dug is awesome. His whole thing about bass platers in the 80’s getting lost in the mix is so on point. Reminds me how Cliff Burton got lost in the mix on early Metallica albums.

Doug Wimbish is a legend and he sounds like no one else. Great to see dUg Pinnick getting his flowers. Kings X is such a unique band.
Doug's the man!
I just watched another feature video on Doug that was in discussion about his talent AND the fact he was a beast on a 12 string bass!
I never get tired of what a movie nerd Doc is. I have that same shirt lol.
Underrated..absolutely underrated!
I love bass.
😄 haha, so true! It all falls apart without the bass 🔊 dUg rocks!!!
Great interview!
This interview took place one year ago when Dug was 48.
He was 40 around 1992 so here he would be 70
In 2006 I-A KING'S X devotee-was @ 3 of them Living Colour concerts dUg talks about.Amsterdam-The Paradiso/Zoetermeer-De Boerderij/Dortmund-Domicil(Germany)Frikken awesome energetic gigs! There are some clips 2 B found on youtube: tags > Living Colour , Doug Pinnick , 2006 , europe.
why doesn't anyone mention Burke shelley from budgie !!!!
Doug is terrific, along with Billy Sheehan, & Rudy Sarzo made Metal great!
Oh my gosh, the host can’t be a bassist or he would know we cringe when people say “Slappa da behs “. But thank you for a great interview with the great Doug Pinnick.
If you haven't seen Kings X live you need to then you will know what real pro's sound like
As a drummer the bass player better bring the goods. I'm a fan of Allan Woody, John Entwistle, Doug obviously. Les, Jaco, Billy S. Bottom line I love a bass player who's not afraid to step out front!!

There's some turf. Good work.
❤ Doug Pinnick ❤

How dare no-one mention Phil Lynott 😲
Pennick. Just…no words. None needed.
Bass players went away in the 80's? I think Geddy Lee, Flea, John Deacon, Louis Johnson, Sting, Chris Squire, Bernard Edwards, John Taylor, Steve Harris, Duff McKagan, and Cliff Burton were pretty damn prominent.
Maybe the person I'd most like to meet and hopefully share a spliff.
Geddy Lee
You gotta have the bass. End of story.
Geddy???
Yes! Tech 21 makes incredible pedals for Geddy & dUg!
i found bass in the 90s.
I never knew that Cliff Burton and Geezer Butler were ignored and underappreciated.
Never would've been had they not had such success and hang onto that section for decades.
There's so much music from Illinois that's embarrassing. Peter Cetera is an obvious one but dUg makes up for so many Dennis DeYoungs.
Here is a list of not underappreciated bass players.

dUg, no one notices us. Until we stop....
A discussion about rock bassists that sing, and not one mention of Geddy Lee 🤔hmmm.
Doug can fucking sing too
