IMO, the British had agreed to hand HK back to China on 1 July 1997 and in return, China had agreed to provide a Basic Law of "one country, two systems" for 50 years (from 1997 to 2047) ...
but as this mutual agreement was made in 1984 .. ... thus, the Sino-British Joint Declaration (registered with UN too) was merely to ensure that, during the transitional period,of 13 years, between September 1984 to June 1997 (midnight), both China and UK had to carry out their promises to draft out the Basic Law ... that's all !!
Therefore, the Sino-British Joint Declaration was "dead" as it expired on 30 June 1997 and the Basic Law would take over on 1 July 1997.
The protesters' demand for "Hong Kong independence" was against the Basic Law ... their demand was unconstitutional but not criminal (as the HKSAR authority was unable to enact Article 23 of the Basic Law) .... and finally, to "close the loophole" the mainland Central Government decided to legislate the internal security law for HKSAR
Henceforth, any demand for "Free HK"( for HK independence) would be an unconstitutional act as well as a criminal offence.

I dont believe in a General who lost a general election and never come back unlike General Mcarthur. How many years have we really study about China thousands years of civilization. Hong Kong and Taiwan are totally different issue from the beginning.
Hong Kong was agreed to be returned after 100 years.
Taiwan on the other hand if had became much stronger earlier could have move into mainland China. It was about 2 brothers with different agenda and couldnt live in the same village. One being weaker had to move away and progressed with their way of life.
During the cultural revolution, did they have time to fly their planes to Taiwan air defend zones. It is nothing better to do now. Taiwan was much better at that time and gave no troubles.
To win back Taiwan it will be a mistake to use military force. U will have a revolution in your own backyard. Maybe in another 2 generations, when U can really showcase the reasonable good living of the peoples as well as a clean transparent good governance system, many will want to return.
Talking about sovereignty, China must have the balls to get Vladivostok to be returned to China.

    IMO,
CHINA = mainland + Taiwan regions + islands, islets, reefs etc. .. in the South China Sea
In 1912, CHINA was officially designated as ROC 🇹🇼 and its government was then the legitimate representative government of CHINA (until it was expelled by U.N. in 1971) and currently, it is the governing authority of the Taiwan region of CHINA.
In 1949, CHINA was officially designated as PRC 🇨🇳 and its government is currently the sole legitimgate representative government of CHINA and is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.
In view of the fact that ..... Taiwan (in both, the Constitution of ROC🇹🇼 and the Constitution of PRC🇨🇳) is part and parcel of CHINA, ... and that, Chinese people, living on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, don't want the region to become another war-torn "Ukraine", they, (as brothers & sisters) should negotiate for a peaceful reunification on the following basis:-
    a) one CHINA, one system
    b) one CHINA, two systems
    c) one CHINA, federal system
    d) any other systems as mutually agreed.
Both sides of the Taiwan Strait is one family = one CHINA = the current status quo of the Taiwan Strait region.

distortion and abuse of the UN Resolution 2758. Was Taiwan or ROC mentioned in the resolution? Full text of the Resolution reads:
"2758 (XXVI). Restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations
      The General Assembly,
Recalling the principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
Considering the restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China is essential both for the protection of the Charter of the United Nations and for the cause that the United Nations must serve under the Charter,
Recognizing that the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations and that the People's Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council,
Decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it.
      1976th plenary meeting,
      25 October 1971."
Taiwan is not part and parcel of the mainland China under the PRC since it was ceded to Japan with the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki during the Qing Dynasty. The Instrument of surrender and the Treaty of Taipei was signed by ROC government.
So far there are no mutual agreement not even the 1992 consenus, a term that was "something that former Mainland Affairs Council minister Su Chi (蘇起) fabricated to placate the KMT in 2000s", which Su conceded in 2006.
Under ROC President Lee Teng-hui in the 1990s, the Additional Articles of the Constitution of the Republic of China were passed which effectively transformed Taiwan from a one-party state into a democracy, and limited civil and political rights to citizens in the "free area" (the area under its actual control, consisting mostly of Taiwan), but did not alter language regarding territorial claims or national territory. Hence, to quote that both ROC and PRC constitution stated that Taiwan is part and parcel of mainland China under PRC is wrong.
GY quoted the reelection of Tsai Ing Wen against a more favorable PRC's backed Han Guo You, why did he not mentioned the one reason why KMT nominee, Eric Chu, the current KMT Chairman lost to Tsai in 2016 with a wide margin?

The free area of the Republic of China, also known as the "Taiwan Area of the Republic of China", "Tai-Min Area (Taiwan and Fuchien)" or simply the "Taiwan Area", is a term used by the government of Taiwan to refer to the territories under its actual control.
The area currently under the definition consists of the island groups of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu and some minor islands.
And you commented in the last paragraph
........should negotiate for a peaceful reunification on the following basis:-
One China with whatever systems or any other systems as mutuallly agreed, did either party agree on talks to come to common ground accepted by both? Even the One China Policy first mentioned in the 1972 Joint Communique or the Shanghai Communique, US has never agreed that Taiwan is part of PR of China. The One China policy refers to a United States policy of strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan. US “acknowledges” but does not “endorse” PRC’s position over Taiwan.

define 'freedom and democracy'? You mean like the one in the USA? Like the freedom to illegally invade Iraq and Afghanistan for 20 years, invade Vietnam for 20 years? Freedom to destroy the middle east and north africa, or to meddle and interfer and assasinate leaders in Latin America or Africa because those leaders want to nationalise their industries? You are talking absolute rubbish my friend. "your" western freedom and democracy is not universal. you do not have a monopoly on the definition of freedom and democracy. The 1.4 billion people in China have THEIR freedom and democracy and they are very happy with it. If people living in "Taiwan or HK or Macau etc" want to have American-style freedumb and democracy, they are welcome to buy a one way ticket and get out of Chinese land. See how simple it is?

Mainland China never had democracy nor freedoms, yet it fought 3 wars with India, invaded Vietnam in 1979 and fought with Soviet Union in 1969. The United States freedoms and democracy is not the only definitions. Taiwan is the example that democracy and freedoms can be implemented in China. (Taiwan is by definition part of China.)

I Lived in Hong Kong and am Taiwanese. Sorry but I disagree with Yeo’s interpretation. He does not address the people’s rights to self determination and the will of the people actually living in HK and Taiwan (who overwhelmingly do not want to reunite). Also the demonization of police in HK was only ever after the government (and police) physically injured protesters. I lived in HK throughout the protests and while there was some negative sentiment against mainlanders - I never encountered it personally and never felt significantly unsafe
