@@hannahleeduggan Thanks a LOT Hannah! 💖 I just bought the machine you have because of your video. I have been wanting one but it sounded intimidating until I watched this!!!
Oh my! In 20 minutes, I learned more from you than I did in the 6-night sewing class I took when I was in my 30s. You are a natural at teaching. You totally amaze me. And, still you have the potential to be a star in the modeling field. I expect you will one day give a tutorial on balayage or giving a perfect fade to a guy, and it will be as good as anything I could do after 30+ years in the business. If I could give you 1,000 likes, it wouldn't be enough.
Not a bad idea! I think I have too much trauma from my needle somehow always hitting one and breaking off to trust leaving the pins in, but it would certainly make for a quicker sew!
I've been sewing for 17 years (I'm 27) and went to school for fashion design, and you honestly did a really great job describing how everything works! Tension is a tough thing to explain and it can vary so much depending on the machine, the thread, the fabric, etc; (so many factors) so you're right in saying its best to just fiddle around till it looks right! I really love watching your thrift transformations because you have such a good eye for what old clothes can become, it's something I'm trying to work on more! One of my favourite things to do in terms of sewing is to take a top or other piece of clothing I really love and trace it, add seam allowance to that tracing and basically make a pattern out of my own clothes. That way I know it will fit (as long as you take the stretch of a fabric into account), and I can create great basics! I guess for this is helps that I have a bit of a background in pattern making but I think its a great next step after learning to alter clothes. Keep it up, and please continue to share any thrifting alterations you make :)
can you please help me so i have no clue what im doing but for example if im sewing somethting and im reaching to the end do i just cut of the thread like what should i do
@@amandatan5772 If you're sewing a seam, you should stitch to the end of the fabric, then press your reverse button on your sewing machine (they all should have them but its different on each machine) and go back over your stitching a bit, maybe 1/2 inch. Once you've reversed over the initial stitching, release the button and go back forward to the end of the fabric, letting it stitch a bit past and cutting the thread. This helps lock the thread in place so that if you pull on the fabric, it doesn't just come loose at the seam :)
"Make some shitty shit" haha this is actually hilarious and also so powerful because I'm often afraid to start because I want things to be perfect from the beginning so this is so good to remember. Thank you!
I am 56 years old, and when I was 14 I did what you did and re made all of my clothes and made original clothes from Butterick Fashions and was Best Dressed my senior year. No one taught me to sew. My mom had a sewing machine, I wanted peg leg jeans so I turned those bell-bottoms into pegs. I remade every piece of clothing I had. I still do it to this very day so kudos to you Hannah Lee Duggan! My hero in a young version
I was just about to go take some flannels to the tailor to get the lengths adjusted, I'm really thinking about practicing on some old fabric now and giving this a go
This was actually so helpful. My mom had a sewing machine when I was growing up but I never learned how to actually use it so if found it really interesting haha
Thank you so much hanna for the great instructions. I have a sewing machine but I've been too chicken to start. But watching this video has given me curage. Love you and thanks
Loved this video! I live and travel full-time in an RV and really want to start making my own clothes because it’s hard for me to find things that I really like/are flattering and are within my budget. Thanks so much for the inspo 💕
Thank you much! My mum use to set the sewing machine up for me I kinda knew what she did but kinda didn't? This video gave me the confidence back into sewing ! Thank you so much iv struggled getting back into my hobbies since mum passed away but this is made my day. Just seeing someone else trying to figure things out is really comforting. I appreciate you ❤️
um this is exactly the type of sewing tutorial i was looking for?? like just helping me get to the point where i could fuck around with upcycling stuff?? thank u!!
Loved this tutorial. You are such a cool person Hannah. I remember home economics class in junior high. We had to thread the machine in 30 seconds for our test. Haha!
You’re so sweet to take the time to show us how to sew! I absolutely love your style of teaching. I appreciate seeing that even if I don’t have a big fancy house and expensive sewing machine I can make stuff and have fun!! You make life more fun because you are real. If I had to watch a professional seamstress show her pre-scripted, perfectly worded demo I would be bored and have to turn it off. With you its cute and fun and easy. Thank you soooo much!! I learned sewing when I was a kid but get frustrated and think Im doing it all wrong. You showed me that Im on the fight track. You give me hope!!
this was super helpful! i've wanted to learn to sew for forever, but was intimidated about knowing how to even start. this video came in perfect timing with receiving my grandmas nice singer showing machine, so I'm super pumped to try stuff out now! can't wait to DIY some thrift finds!
I'm very late to this party, only just started following you for the cool ideas you have for van life. I'm so surprised I don't see more guys commenting. I know guys think sewing is a female thing to do, but to me a sewing machine is just another power tool to make things. I even made some costume figure skating covers for my ex when she was in a figure skating competition a while ago. I bought myself one over 10 years ago and have used it to make anything from curtains to camping pillow cases to custom bags for bicycles, as well as the occasional fix to a piece of clothing. Your presentation is really relaxed and fun, so it's easy to learn from. Keep it up and if you're ever in Melbourne Australia, feel free to shout out for some local knowledge.
I admire a person with an adventurous spirit. You don't have to be an expert at anything to try a new skill esp if its just for yourself. And without proper lessons you might take a path that you discover something nobody ever did! I am like that with some things. Cooking I can figure out, is also taught myself to play piano and read music. I never did figure out a sewing machine. I told you my mom used to sew out of nowhere...she tried to teach me so many times.
Good for you to teach this stuff. There are so many benefits of learning skills like this. Just the confidence to have a go at making clothes, or cooking, basic DIY . Building skills like this helps people grow in confidence, teachers self reliance and problem solving which are so important in life 👍😊
I know nothing about sewing but I really appreciate how accessible you made this topic! I have always been super intimidated by this but my mom has been making things her whole life with her sewing machine? (Both her wedding dresses and so much more!) Thank you for making this seem so much more possible to explore!
I fell over your sewing videos a few weeks ago and got so inspired! I’ve always thought I couldn’t sew but I decided to try and I managed to make a decent pair of dungarees from an old sheet, I was so happy. I just received a few fabrics I ordered and gonna try to make some other pieces (The second hand clothes are closed here in Denmark otherwise I’d search for fabrics there). Thank you for making me believe in myself! ❤️
I loved this Hannah, I'm a fashion student in my last semester and I also teach kids how to sew. The way you explained everything was really good, I would explain the reversing stitch the same way! It's good to be able to show people why you do things a certain way. You don't need to know all the right techniques in order to sew and I think oftentimes people can be scared off sewing by not knowing everything. This video helps show how accessible (and fun!) it is for everyone
Amazing tutorial! I had a singer when I was young and didn't have internet and taught myself half way using the manual...but I couldn't get any further than a straight stitch and most the time I was guessing. I got discouraged after around half a year and less and less interested. Eventually it disappeared somehow. So THANK YOU! You answered so many questions to my 12 year old self and re-awakened my dream of making my own clothes once again!
You are such a good teacher! Thank you! I've been wanting to learn how to sew for a couple of years. I bought a nice sewing machine and tried it but kept getting knots (I'm guessing tension issues). I'm excited to try again after watching this video! I want to take trips in my van (one day) and just be alone in nature to sew a lot of stuff that I've been wanting to sew and being off in the van, off in the wild, will be so conducive for me. Thanks for the lessons!
I know this is an older video but still wanted to comment. I am 55 and have struggled learning most things through out my life, unless I can see it in action first, not in a book if you like. Your way of basic, straight talking but easy going demo is perfect, no making it complicated or boring ramblings before hand. Well done, you have probably helped a lot of ppl understand the basics, voila. You make a great teacher. And i really love to watch you just make up a piece of clothing on the fly, 😊 like those dungaree shorts, amazing and so clever. I think I have learnt more from youtube than my entire school years lol 🤭 Thanks Hannah x
I learn by doing, and it's usually an idea in my head. You described it perfectly, I like your style of doing things. Your pretty awesome! Love all your videos, can't wait for what you do next. Your inspiring 👍😀
I need to get back into sewing again, thank you for the inspiration! I have the urge to learn how to sew stuffed animals or dog toys and possibly sell some of them. History lesson: mass market clothing started taking flight in department stores in the late 1800's as well as the demand for personal sewing machines. Before all of that most clothing you had to sew yourself or employ a professional seamstress, so I imagine it was quite lucrative to know how to sew back before the industrial revolution and make a solid living out of it.
I've only ever sewn by hand (not because I wanted to, but because I just don't have a sewing machine) and lemme tell you nothing, and I mean NOTHING makes you wanna quit more than spending 3 hours on a project only to realize you're maybe 1/6 the way through. I once had sewed a tiny decorative quilt (like maybe 3 ft by 4 ft?) And it took me FOUR MONTHS
i use a Brother machine but it’s very similar, and i don’t usually pull the bottom bobbin thread through the top under the foot, it should come up when you start sewing! just so you know! of course your machine is different but it could save you some time!
I bought a beginners sewing machine for my.9 yr old granddaughter . It has a needle guard. I sent this video to her and her Aunt Amanda to help them.get familiar. Its not a singer machine. But the tips you gave can be very helpful. Thank you , I enjoy watching your videos. You keep it real and that makes it better. Thank you .
Thank you for your videos, I look forward to seeing them every week, I’m recovering from breast cancer and watch lots of you tube because I’m so weak, I love your channel, there is something peaceful about you and you make me forget my problems, sending you lots of love❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
This is some really good information, one tip my grandma taught me is that if you put the pins in horizontally you don’t always have to pull them out and can just sew right over them
With these skills a person could make cloth napkins for people for Christmas. Or a simple shower curtain for yourself or some reusable produce or grocery sacks. I did monkey around with my mom's sewing machine enough (she set it up) to make some nylon drawstring bags for backpacking.
I want to make huge teepee out a lot of sheets cut into triangles. Then on the top, like add a clothesline rope with a baseball at the end & then finding a high limb & throwing it around it. Then, pulling it to where it raises the whole teepee. Your idea of going to the thrift store would be a cheap way to do that.
Hi Hannah, love your wonderful videos and enjoy watching them again and again when having time. Do you use any skin smoothing app for filming? I'm filming my vlogs also with an iPhone, it's so convenient. But my videos do not look that great. Keep up having a wonderful time you two! Cheers, Julia from Austria :D 💕
Thanks for the video, really been looking for something like this, a basic tutorial with a sewing machine that doesn't cost something outrageous. I think your model looks like a 95€ one I found on Amazon and I think I'm gonna finally take the plunge and get it. Last spring, when I found your channel, I redid my entire spring/summer wardrobe based on your videos, I can't wait to see what you do this fall/winter
I loved this tutorial which helped me recollect my basic sewing knowledge but your beautiful hair updo caught my whole attention) It would be great to watch the explanation of how to create this particular style for like dumbs)
Thank you so much for this video! I literally bought the same machine 2 months ago and I haven’t touched because I’ve been so intimidated! I’m excited to use this video!
Nah dude! Sewing machines are so simple and handy once you get the first steps down! You’re going to be addicted to it I promise, you’ll be searching around like “what can I fix? What needs to be patched? How can I make an outfit out of this old table cloth?” 😂
This is perfect haha, Ive been looking around for the best sewing machine to take with me in my van! How does yours go on power? How quickly does it drain the juice in your battery?☀
This is how I've learnt all my crafts ... UA-cam and giving it a go. If it's not perfect who cares it's something homemade 💗 Although, I've never made clothes. New house end of month and curtains, cushion covers and stuff will be on my radar. I think i need a new machine though the little one i got in aldi is very cute but is under pressure going through more than two pieces of fabric 🙈 Thanks Hannah 🌼 ps you were talking about other youtubers ... watched Rachel Maksy yesterday, she seems to give tough stuff a go too and doesnt worry too much, more inspo 😊🌼
I found you on UA-cam recently, and I'm hooked. You are lovely and just a joy to view. I think it's your contentment with solitude that I relate to. I know you probably won't see this comment because you posted this last year... But you have inspired me to go and get a sewing machine and just go for it already! Getting one- even if all I create is square things like curtains or table cloths, it will be worth while. Sewing has always been something I wanted to learn. And now I am ready hehe! (I am old enough to be your mother) BTW my oldest son lives in Madison. I love it up there. ☺️🌞🌈 Thanks, Hannah!
Fun!! Never too late to pick up a new hobby!! Excited for you 🤗 (I recommend going into it expecting to get frustrated btw haha I’m currently letting my sewing machine have a time-out because we got in a fight 😂)
Awesome video!! I didn't know anything about the sewing machine, but this really helps a lot, cuz I would like to know to sew my one stuff and especially those that break :)) Thanks for this one is really great!! xoxo
I need sturdy cel phone pockets with a sturdy zipper on t shirts for hot weather. Don't want to have phone in my pocket competing with keys and carpenter pencils etc etc , change:Busts up the screen. The zipper keeps the phone from falling out when bent over and working. The pocket will need backing reinforcement and the t shirt should be of a quality weave so it does not rip around the pocket from the weight of the phone. Shirts can also have cel phone pockets with zippers. ( same reason, so phone don't fall out )
Wow..your sista called u out!! Lol.....well u look like u did a terrific job to me....I appreciate the knowledge u are sharing...cause I'm a beginner!!
Great Job Hannah ❣Really good basic instructions that are easy to understand and follow. Beautiful Tutorial .. Very nicely done ❣❣❣❣❣/ 5 heart exclamation marks for this video
No, not really. Some schools have one course (usually an elective) of Home Ec(sp?) in High School and may have to do one sewing project in that class, but it focuses on other things like doing laundry, cooking, etc. It's honestly a dieing class, Home Ec.
love your videos. you could make the phone book sound interesting. but i gotta talk about coffee. that video where you made some looked like a total pain. and i see you have outlets! i use a mr. coffee four cup pot and make one cup daily. less than half a pot of water and a scoop of grounds. this is about as far as i go with "cooking" haha. i did see a lady that lived in her car use a water pot that plugs into the cig lighter. she drank tea. but you could use a french press with hot water. anything to not leave the van before coffee!
At 10:51 you said: and now you're ready to sew. You missed telling them/us one more Very Important step. That "silver thing" (@7:40) is called a Thread Take-Up, it MUST be at it's highest point (by turning the hand crank) BEFORE you begin to sew OR the thread will be pulled up & out of your needle & you will very pissed off & not know why.
I've been sewing for 35 years and I gotta say you did a great job teaching. ♡

If you pin perpendicular to your hem you can usually sew right over the pins then remove them at the end.
Not a bad idea! I think I have too much trauma from my needle somehow always hitting one and breaking off to trust leaving the pins in, but it would certainly make for a quicker sew!

Nah dude! Sewing machines are so simple and handy once you get the first steps down! You’re going to be addicted to it I promise, you’ll be searching around like “what can I fix? What needs to be patched? How can I make an outfit out of this old table cloth?” 😂
Watched this at 11:11 haha the angels are with you
That is so cool I have never seen a sewing machine threaded properly before
There is always more than one way to do everything in life. Thank you hannahlee your awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for preparing for usung a sewing machine. I appreciate it.
Hello, thanks to you I managed to use my sewing machine, thank you from France !!
Thank you so much every other tutural they start with as long as ... and even bett I have the same machine :)
Sowing is only needed sometimes, love your videos, love you ,your awesome, live free and soar... peace
Love the encouragement! Your videos are amazing
Also i love your style!!
love it- "make some shitty shit". I love your adventurous spirit and approach to life/everything :)
(I am old enough to be your mother)
BTW my oldest son lives in Madison. I love it up there. ☺️🌞🌈
Thanks, Hannah!
Fun!! Never too late to pick up a new hobby!! Excited for you 🤗
(I recommend going into it expecting to get frustrated btw haha I’m currently letting my sewing machine have a time-out because we got in a fight 😂)
Haha! ☺️ I would love to have seen that lil tiff lol...
I will take your words to heart and take my sewing adventure slow. ❤
This was super helpful and interesting too...thanks!...keep it up♡
Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful!!
So funny, I have an older version of that machine, and we do things exactly the same.
Love these videos keep them coming out more please
Awesome video!! I didn't know anything about the sewing machine, but this really helps a lot, cuz I would like to know to sew my one stuff and especially those that break :))
Thanks for this one is really great!! xoxo
One question, are you plugged in via 12 volt? Can you take your regular sewing machine to use in the van?
I just found this! Thanks for posting! 👏🏻☺️
Could you share the amazon link for the sewing machine or a similar one? TIA! x
"come watch hannah not know what she's doing either!" amazing lol
I have the same one but it’s blue
I need sturdy cel phone pockets with a sturdy zipper on t shirts for hot weather. Don't want to have phone in my pocket competing with keys and carpenter pencils etc etc , change:Busts up the screen. The zipper keeps the phone from falling out when bent over and working. The pocket will need backing reinforcement and the t shirt should be of a quality weave so it does not rip around the pocket from the weight of the phone. Shirts can also have cel phone pockets with zippers. ( same reason, so phone don't fall out )
How is your battery consumption with this machine??? I create, and worry about not being able to use my machine in my Ambo!!!
Stunning!
I’m loving your videos why didn’t I discover you sooner lol 😊🧡
I haven’t watched the video yet but I just want to say that your channel is amazing and your great ok now to watch
Singer is the best!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing :)
Really needed this video!
Well at least this is the basics... Better than me making a dress that one time haha
Ahahaha mares 😂 now you can fix ur clothes. Ps. Why didn’t you just ask to hang and I could’ve help you in person? 🙄😂
Hannah let's make that dress idea I had! It's super easy! Let's hang out whenever you come to the Midwest. Miss you sis ❤
Wow..your sista called u out!! Lol.....well u look like u did a terrific job to me....I appreciate the knowledge u are sharing...cause I'm a beginner!!
Nicely done!
Great Job Hannah ❣Really good basic instructions that are easy to understand and follow. Beautiful Tutorial .. Very nicely done ❣❣❣❣❣/ 5 heart exclamation marks for this video
Is ”sewing” a subject in american schools? In sweden it is a subject and i learned it When i was 6 lol
From what I understand, no. Not an expert simply because I'm home schooled. The American education system sucks.
No, not really. Some schools have one course (usually an elective) of Home Ec(sp?) in High School and may have to do one sewing project in that class, but it focuses on other things like doing laundry, cooking, etc. It's honestly a dieing class, Home Ec.
Why did I delete the other vid-
It only uploaded with 2 minutes of the video, and then cut out 🤦🏼♀️ not sure what happened 😭
@@hannahleeduggan lmaoo I was early for once 😔💕💕
you deserve wayyyyyyyyy more subscribers
Hannah Lee you are one Beautiful woman. Love your videos. Art
love your videos. you could make the phone book sound interesting. but i gotta talk about coffee. that video where you made some looked like a total pain. and i see you have outlets! i use a mr. coffee four cup pot and make one cup daily. less than half a pot of water and a scoop of grounds. this is about as far as i go with "cooking" haha. i did see a lady that lived in her car use a water pot that plugs into the cig lighter. she drank tea. but you could use a french press with hot water. anything to not leave the van before coffee!
Lookin very good Hanna, how very pretty.
You just are Beautiful Rockstar what will you not try or do and it All comes out awesome 💕😍
