I've been up there a couple of times and it's worth every penny. YFI that fire tower at Whittaker used to be on top of Gauley Mountain iin Fayette County. It was 100 years old last year. The best job I ever had was manning that tower.
From the dawn of the maglev and science fiction of Beanstalk vertical railways to the ancient wonders of steam. Love hearing these ancient beasts from a prehistoric industrial age.
In case anyone was confused as to why these locomotives are so slow, the Shay locomotive was built specifically to hand carrying large and heavy loads up steep inclines that other locomotives would have had trouble with otherwise. Instead of having the pistons connected directly to the wheels, the pistons drive crankshafts that give the engines insane amounts of power, but very little speed. The focus on power is also why the Shay appears to not be very "fuel efficient" if you want to call it that.
And run at partial slip, something you really couldn't do with a direct drive steam locomotive. Once they start slipping it's game over, they'll rev themselves right to the moon if you don't immediately chop the regulator back, but Shays would happily chuff away at partial slip all day long. Helped with their pulling power.
Fantastic! The very quiet operation of these magnificent Shays coupled with the mournful sound of the whistles makes them almost ghostly. What a superb show they put on for everybody. Greetings from the UK, Bob K.
Awesome video and almost brought tears to my eyes. Thank you very much indeed for this wonderful video of yours! If I may share a personal experience of mine. You know, I find it kind of funny while I always drew the “classic” steam locomotives growing up and dreamed of being at the throttle of a larger road engine like a Northern or a Hudson, I practically grew up with the Shays. Here in Ottawa Ontario Canada, the Canadian Science & Technology Museum has a two truck Shay, and out over in Kelowna British Columbia, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway also operates a two truck Shay. I have grown up with these engines and I love every bit of them, from their “old western style” look to their offset boilers. While I always seem to swerve back to the “classic” engines, the Shays will always have a special place in my heart. Again, thank you for this amazing video and keep up the great and awesome work.
Steamy!!! Bullet, electric, diesel trains are not worth talking. But these lively steam locos with the greenery adding more beauty, makes me feel it's a gift for those who are living around that region.
It would be fun to com pare a Climax to the Shays also. The one we had at Snoqualmie would do 25 mph wide open but they were also known to shake themselves apart. We had to check for loose nuts and bolts daily.
It's like if these things are alive, just awesome. I love all kind of trains, subway, diesel, bullet, but man... there is something magical about the steam trains.
Ugh, man... I could never get tired of hearing those beautiful whistles... c: That one particularly deep one at 1:14 gave me some crazy chills for a second; truly love how soulful, almost mourning it sounds. Hoo, man... I would LOVE to hear that in person, jesus h... Personally, it didn't sound off quite long enough to do it justice, IMO.
Thank you for making me realise the first thing I want to do once my mum and I are vaccinated is go book a day out for her on a steam railway come summer. Poor lass has been practically locked up for a year.
I see 4 different designs in this trains and another trains all it wonderful you science education original God bless you and protect you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
dalton ward They are built for logging up in the mountains, so all those bits on the side are pistons which are driving crankshafts that are attached to the wheels, this gives the locomotives insane strength for a locomotive their size at the cost of speed, and the system also allows them to climb a steeper grade than a traditional steam locomotive.
What do you call the type of locomotive that has the weird gearing on the wheels? I have never seen one like that? What was the purpose of that type of gearing?
TilemanSD - The locos with the offset boiler are called Shays, designed by Ephraim Shay about 100 years ago. The one ahead with the center-line drive is called a Heisler, and they were just about the fastest geared steam locomotives of the time. There is a third big league player at Cass but it hasn't been fully restored yet, it's called a Climax, and it resembles the Heisler a little but was known for being stubborn. Have a great day! Oh yeah, the Shays were geared like that to operate a lot like a 4x4 truck except they had rails to run on, it gave them extreme traction and flexibility on steep, curved, or poorly built track. They were kind of like a mix between truck and locomotive in a way.
They're mainly just putting on a show for the cameras, it is a railfan weekend afterall. Most of the time, the engineers are more reserved on the whistle.
Due to the vagaries of the UA-cam algorithm, I've never seen this clip before. While they were a truly awesome collection of steam engines, with the most awesome sounds - better even than #4014, in my opinion - I was surprised that so few people pointed out the locomotive on the far right, was not a three truck Shay and how many had never seen a geared loco. All the other four were Shays, of slightly different models I think, but that first loco was a three truck Heisler. Which in and of itself, must be as rare as rocking horse pooh. I never knew Heisler ever produced such a thing, but given Shays often had the third powered truck, Heislers would've had to compete? The third type of geared loco from about the same era, was the Climax, which had cylinders mounted almost conventionally, driving a crankshaft under the boiler. This drove bevel gears on a centre line drive shaft to the two trucks. Although I have seen a Shay in my time, they never existed here in the UK. There are small, articulated narrow gauge locos, but they are of the 0-4-0+0-4-0 Garret or Fairly types, or even a few Mallett types, not geared drive locos. Oddly enough, a Shay would be one of the few types of American locomotive that could run on standard gauge track in the UK, because of our very restricted loading gauge. Our largest and most powerful locomotives are just over 13' high and 8' wide!
I know these locomotives were built for torque, or should I say Tractive Effort, but what would the horsepower peak at on these mountain climbing iron horses?
We are so lucky that these magnificent locomotives were kept alive and running for future generations to enjoy .

I watched this once on my tv and since then my 2yr old daughter always asks to watch trains. Thank You for the great video
I have been here once years ago, the sounds of the whistles echoing in the mountains was almost magical to listen 1 sounding like 5.
That’s good oh no
I really appreciate these sounds of these machines. Very beautiful.

The design also allowed them to negotiate much sharper curves

Thank you for the explanation - I figured they functions as drive shafts, kind of, but I wasn't sure what the benefit would have been.
Wow love the sound of these beautiful monsters of the past .
There is something very primal and pure about the whistles of these engines.
pure analog sound, with millions of shades and tones. Plus incredable echo .......... I agree with you ! no plastic/synthetic sound here !!!!
Owen Jones-Wells yeah trains from the 19th century
I'd love to put one in my truck!

I watched this video so many times as a kid

U should see it at fall time when leaves change
Love you steam locomotive 🚂❤♥💙😘💕🚂good job specially sounds and photography 👏👍Love from India 🇮🇳❤♥
The beginning was like a musical orchestra, wow!
Fantastic video, well done!
I remember the sheys whistle it's a true work of art
Also, My new nanocell TV + your camera = awesome colors.
It would be fun to com
pare a Climax to the Shays also. The one we had at Snoqualmie would do 25 mph wide open but they were also known to shake themselves apart. We had to check for loose nuts and bolts daily.
Amazing ! I have never seen the locomotive with the pistons on the sides !
Most of them are called shays, to be more exact it is a Virginia and truckee 3 ton truck shay
My best friend, It's always great. I wish you every day of your development. Have a happy day!
That would be spectacular to see in person! - Granted it will take 50 years before the bird population recovers but wow, what a sight!
It's like if these things are alive, just awesome.

The first locomotive is actually a Heisler, a different kind of loco also used for logging.
Don't they got wheels underneath or have some weird system that keeps them on the track
uhh no, theres no such thing as wheels underneath

Why doesn't the 11's whistle blow?
I don’t know. Maybe there wasn’t enough steam.
@alexfarrell5533 Or maybe its not running
Brilliant video. I ❤️ the sounds 🌿

Wonderful! Greetings from Austria.
WOW, Very Impressive !
There's a steam train like that and Snellville Georgia that went around Stone Mountain I remember getting to ride that when I was a kid
I am rode it as well.
The sound is much louder and bigger than the locomotive itself.
That Heisler Whistle is beautiful
Would have loved to have been a passenger. Priceless experience.
기적소리 멋있다.ㅎ
서로 경쟁을 하는듯.
Heisler #6-B&O 3 chime
Shay #6-ATSF 6 chime
Shay #5-Crosby 3 chime
Shay #11-Powell 3 chime
Shay #4-C&O Hooter/1 chime
Actually that is a Manns Creek Crosby 3 chime that is on Shay #5
I always watching those loco-videos, because I hope, that sometimes one of them explodes!
Possibly the best sound in creation....
I miss the railfan weekends at cass
People talk about Art, This a almost lost Art! So cool!😍
I see 4 different designs in this trains and another trains all it wonderful you science education original God bless you and protect you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
a friend of mine built a wooden one, special!!! So cool!!!!
I have never steam engine with parts like that before

They are called hersihers and shays
@@jupitersteam8321Heislers*
I like ancient trains, the smoke is a lot, in Indonesia there is nothing like that.
How is the shooting like that? Very beautiful. thanks.
If this is a Shay race, why is there a Heisler leading the pack???
Best beautiful very nice 🙂
Que preciosidad los locomotoras ❤❤❤
Good upload w
기술은 정말 웅장한 듯
Too bad you don't have a Willamette Shay in the running. I'd like to see the comparison.
What a lovely siren sound 😍

The "Mountain Goats" of the steam engine era
good job!
1:14 sounds just like a N&W Y6B Hooter Whistle. Great sound capture !
Low Budget Scale Modeling. That is really a TFRR hooter.
Stefan, Would you be kind enough to explain what TFRR is ?
Low Budget Scale Modeling. Tallulah Falls Railroad.
Thank you Stefan.
Low Budget Scale Modeling. You are quite welcome.
Wow this is insane!
Was that an ATSF 6 Chime on WM Shay #6?
I think so
Bananna
I love that AT&SF 6 chime!
Why cant horns sound like that anymore? Id love to have one on my diesel truck..lol
its whistle, not a horn
how are people even this dumb

What an odd technical design! The pistons & cylinders are located at the sides of the engine? That's interesting...
what whistle was WM 6 wearing?
these things hurt my eyes
The engineers seem to be "trigger happy" when using the whistle. What rules are there for this?
They're mainly just putting on a show for the cameras, it is a railfan weekend afterall. Most of the time, the engineers are more reserved on the whistle.
Those are badass!!!
Is there a Heisler Class C amonst the Shays?
daniel taylor I believe so, not sure
+All Aboard Productions Heisler 6 is a Class C.
Nice capture bro
Thanks!
So beautyful
Heisler 6 sound a bit Loud.

It's beautiful
Thank you!

the driving wheels are small because they are geared locomotive
