As a 7 year old, I remember being ‘obsessed’ with the CN tower… my aunt lived on a dead end street in North York ( formally Downsview )and you could clearly see the CN tower, and whenever possible I would just stand at the end of her street just to have my eye on it as it slowly went higher and higher….. I have all the newspaper cut outs and photos of its topping off on April of 1975…. What a great memory…. Many many Years later, at a Gala I had the privilege of meeting a gentleman by the name of Paul Mitchell. He was one of canron steel’s foremen, that helped top off the CN Tower.. unfortunately he passed away years ago in a boating accident ( I believe), but what a great guy he was!! Best childhood memory ever!!!!
I was doing Heart Surgery at TGH on the top floor of the Private Patients' Pavillion. Every day we would watch what was going on at the Tower. I remember when the helicopter lifted the needle for the top. Boy that was a long time ago. More than 40yrs.
This contains what’s possibly the ONLY footage in existence of the mass damper on the antenna mast.
Great video...crap music.
Thanks for the comment. Suggest turning down the audio and playing something more to your taste. Hard to please everyone!
That was Olga, the Sirkorsky / Erickson Sky Crane.
What an awesome compilation of worker movies. Thankfully many brought their movie cameras to archive this historical moment in history. Well done.
What a great feat of engineering, long live the cn tower
If you're afraid of heights, that job is not for you.
Remember it well! It was so exciting!
Very proud of the CN tower my uncle was one of the Ironworks that worked on the tower ,great video.
Dad pretending to through his child from CN tower. hahah. oh Dads...
The original free climbers
Wow! 7:30 a new view back then. But now we've seen many times over. I can't help but notice all the open space Downtown.(Condoless).
I got vertigo just watching this video...
Great little film, nice music too.
great job
Crap, crap...
That's awesome.
It is wonderful for the guys working with VIBRON (who made the tuned mass dampers) to allow this personal video to be posted -- it is very rare footage. If you'd like to learn of a subset of the people who designed and built the tower, and more visuals of its construction, then please take an hour and visit my CN Tower Historical Project at www.pastandfuturehistory.com.
POV:you are doing a school project
Lol at 8:28 when the squadron of yellow planes fly in I'm thinking they're looking for a huge gorilla scaling up the tower like Kong did with the WTC in the 1976 version.
What kind of idiot gene does one need to be an iron worker on a skyscraper/tower? I was at the CN Tower twice last year and visited the Skypod both times and I gotta say I almost puked.... Twice! I just don't get what is in their metal that makes them able to do this. I think they must be part Spiderman or something. Hat's off to you guys.
They are far from idiots. What a strange thing to call my brothers. The are just men with big balls. Say thank you then stfu.😔
Ok Fellow Canadians help me out, was some of this footage not used in the network signoff clips back in the 80s for either TVO, CTV or CBC? There's a few seconds on top of of the tower where the guys are hanging around that look familiar...
Reply: Actually the 8mm film footage is exclusive to this video. It was transferred directly from the client's original film that had sat unwatched for decades. However, the men in the video may have appeared in an "official" video at some point. D.
Thanks Helga, the Erickson sky crane, for building the CN tower
