I noticed that it’s not a true 1.33x lens too. I always “de-squeeze” in post. I’ve been trying to figure out what the actual ratio is. (Update: looks like it’s at 1.25) I load it up in DaVinci Resolve, highlight all footage, right click and select “clip attributes,” in video tab go to “Pixel Aspect Ratio” and select 1.25. Then choose whatever output format for the project you want. On a side note; if you’re doing any compositing with this lens, I did a rough lens distortion compensation test. I got a K1 value is -.068. If this is incorrect, let me know. I can always share the image or video clip of the test for you to analyze on your own. I don’t mind the soft edges. But be aware when you’re shooting with it that the lens is perfectly mounted flush. If it’s not you’ll get extreme soft edges or vignetting on one or both sides.)
@@robsamtvph2331 Filmic Pro does not have a 1.25 ratio option. You have to use the 1.33x ratio. De-Squeeze in your NLE, not in your camera. The ratio will seem off if you do.
Thanks a million for your honest (and great-looking intro) review! You saved me needless headaches and disappointment. It is worth subscribing, which I am doing. Cheers!
I have this lens but do not get this green tint on my LGV40 using Filmic Pro or MCPro24fps.Also, I do not like the clips provided at all. They gave me significant distortion.I have the Ulanzi U Rig Metal, Beastgrip Pro and Dreamgrip cages. The best fit was the Dreamgrip. The optical mount was the most flush against the phone's lens and gave me the best video with minimal distortion. If you have the Dreamgrip cage, give that a shot and try to compare.
Thanks for your honesty. I spent the big bucks on a moment anamorphic lens and when for a ulanzi telephoto lens as there’s no blurred out edges. Also get yer lawn cut mate!😄
@@rickyeverett I was able to solve that problem with the Dreamgrip Pro cage that comes with a screw on 52mm filter adapter.I just needed to add a step up/step down ring because of the height of the lens and add filters like a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 to the 65mm with no problem.
Arh that’s good then 👍🏼 not a fan of the dream grip cage it’s too big and bulky for me I literally shoot everything using the Ulanzi 17mm case for the iPhone and for studio shot I attach the phone with the case on to half the beastcage at least you have found a work around for it tho 🔥
Did you do the same 1.33 test on this pro version , but on the 1st version a year ago? Are they both not really 1.33 screen ratio or just the pro? Is the green time just the pro model and not the 1st model too? Do you still recommend the 1st model over the pro model?
I just recently picked the G2 version and it isn’t bad at all, I will more than likely still picked the sandmarc version but it’s not bad for what you pay.... I would love to get that iPhone XS Max cage been looking for it for awhile but can’t seem to find it.... it would make a great compliment to my mobile video setup not looking to make a huge rig but add some lights and mics for sit down Vlogs
Wish I’d seen this before I purchased it, I think Ulanzi’s quality control is crap..mine wasn’t just soft on the edges but was extremely soft all over think I had a duff one. Sent back through Amazon, now going to give the Sirui a shot...great channel thank you 👍😊
Great review once again. Hope you can review Apexel's latest anamorphic (the one with circular body build) which is within the same price range as this Ulanzi G3. I just want to see the difference between the 2. Thanks!
@@rickyeverett This one, one reason I think this is better than ulanzi is that it already has a 37 mm thread (as their specs suggest) for filters. www.shopapexel.com/products/apexel-universal-clip-1-33x-wide-screen-mobile-anamorphic-lens?_pos=3&_sid=6db400b9a&_ss=r
I thinks this lens is great value at only £28 on Amazon (sept 2020) great for that retro dreamy look with the sharp center and slight blur at the corners, the tint adds even more to the retro look if you like that, what your calling negative some people will find positive 😉
Great video Ricky, my question is what would happen if I put a diffusing filter over an anamorphic lens? Is this something that can be done or will it be complete garbage? Cheers!
I bought 1.33 17mm X Pro. I can't handle it. Help! I'm filming with a galaxy S20 Plus. When I put the lens with the supplied clips, the phone screen perceives that I touch with my finger. Change the focus, the light ... I don't understand why I'm selling those phone clips. The problem is that I can't find a case compatible with the 17mm S20 Plus. The ones from Moment have, but 15 mm. Does anyone know a good solution?

You’re giving your opinion on one lens that actually fits over 25+ anamorphic lenses in the market in the range of 70 to 200 dollars, now you want perfection, well expect to spend thousands of dollars to get a “good” lens and the equipment that goes with it!
I bought the Ulanzi and also the case. I get soft edges with the case. With the clamp I can sharpen one side only or have them with both blurred edges but less than the case. I think the lenses of the Iphone pro 12 are further placed back compared to it's predecessors. I have to zoom quite a lot to get rid of the edges. I think I am going to sell them. Has anyone got this problem with the Ulanzi 3gen lens and iphone pro 12?
Great review my dude! I almost bought this, but just like you, I really disliked that green tint that was all over the footage. About the beastcage, I would love to have a B-camera alongside my 11 Pro Max that’s already in a dreamgrip evolution mojo 2020, but that nearly broke my wallet and don’t have the budget to afford another cage. I’m forcing myself into video production, as I’ve been forced into unemployment in the Silicon Valley of CA, and I’m done making excuses to delay anymore. You’re awesome, keep up the good work.
iphones should already come with these lenses i'd happily pay for options like blue flare or orange flare and for 1.33 or 1.55 versions of an iphone like these should already be standard it should have 10-bit log and integrated anamorphic lens.
I show those problems in my UA-cam video, but many people disliked it. They always claim that this is the best lens you can buy in this price. (In my point of view, an anamorphic lens with soft edges is totally unusable.) So, just let them to buy it.
Yeah unfortunately people are always going to hate, I do think there have abit of a quality controller issues as some peoples lenes have been fine and other have had issues, hopefully there next verion will be on point 👍
Marcos I do definitely prefer this lens to the original but still think for the price it costs it’s just not there yet I’m going to do a comparison between this and sirui anamorphic lens as there are around the same price and see what’s better 👍🏼
I was thinking about picking up this lens but was discouraged listening to your review about soft edges and green tint. However I think the problem was that you didn’t have the lens mounted as precisely as you should have. When mounted properly there are no soft edges. For an explanation of this please view this video which has some video and stills with sharp edges and no green tint. ua-cam.com/video/KLl-tH7TuxI/v-deo.html I
Joseph Albanese that dude blatantly work with Ulanzi sending him free stuff to review, he has probably zoomed in on the image eliminating the soft edges, I know how to mount a lens onto a phone aswell it’s not rocket science, if the lens I had was good I would have send it was good but unfortunately it wasn’t for the price it costs, Ulanzi might not have great quality control and some units might be ok and others not, either way I had a bad unit and can’t be any fairer than that.
P.s just take a look at his review of the lens when it’s being compared to mdl and beast grips anamorphic lens when he’s panning showing the distortion part the lens corners are so soft.

Thankyou 👍🏻
what music is this and can we use it for short movies?

So for you anyway, it’s a ‘Fond Flarewell” for the Ulanzi!

What's the app that you used?
I used the beastcam app from beastgrip 👍🏻
Why skip?
That Artificial blue line looks annoying for me.
The Lens is not good. Try it out with Firstlight Photo App from filmic. You can clearly see that it is not 1.33.
