OMG I never knew Costas did Bulls games on WGN I didn't pay much attention to sports or anything about that time in 1979 after my mother died just a few months before
Christopher Wood Me either. I know he started his long and hall of fame announce career as a broadcaster with the St Louis Sprits of the ABA in the mid 1970s right before the merger. Since then I think Bob has lived in the St Louis area full time since then. Costas always stated that after his first love in sports, baseball, that his other personal favorite sport in his career to host and call games was ABA/NBA basketball. However in 1979, I thought I had read in his bio, some that he was already hired by NBC. Maybe he was only doing low level NFL Regional games in the Midwest ie Bengals and Browns for NBC during this time. I know by 1981 he was fully employed full time by NBC sports and thus the rest is history.
I've often wondered about the office politics involving Bob Costas short stay at WGN. The goal for many in the business IS to go Network/NYC, but there was definitely a huge window where WGN could have made HIM The Guy --- on TV & Radio. Passing the torch from Jack Brickhouse to him. Bob Costas has done all the things on a national (& occasional international level) that J.B. did in Chicago (& occasionally N/I) & for a similar quantity of time. I mean, I don't seem to recall Bob mention J.B. when it comes to popular baseball announcers, y'all.
I distinctly remember Costas mentioning Jack Brickhouse among top broadcasters, though not necessarily the context. He definitely doesn't talk about working at WGN much if at all.
Their final year in the Western Conference and Midwest Division was in 1979-80 before they moved to the Eastern Conference and Central Division alongside the Bucks to make room for the Rockets and the then-expansion Mavericks in the West beginning in 1980-81.
I know I'm only 25, but I wouldn't mind watching a game nowadays where the players are introduced along with their respective heights and weights and the rules explained before the tip with no music playing prior to it.
The Pistons at 4-6 would lose their next two games too drop to 4-8 and as a result would fire the head coach. That head coach they fired was Dick Vitale who never coached again. 😊
I found it kind of charming. A more sincere performance than you'll hear today, when the singer shows off their chops by physically wrestling the song to the ground.
@@aboxofbroken8tracks983 I know what you are saying about many modern renditions of the anthem, but "charming" is extremely kind for this one- it was painful to listen to.
First, Costas is excellent at play-by-play - has always had a real gift for it. Second, the first 2:30 of this game is a complete shit show, but entertaining regardless. Great post!
Bob Costas is simply a gift to all of us sports fans. Such a legend and true professional!
Reggie Theus was the Billy Dee Williams of the NBA.
OMG I never knew Costas did Bulls games on WGN I didn't pay much attention to sports or anything about that time in 1979 after my mother died just a few months before
My condolences on the loss of your mother, even though it was a while ago.
I walked by Red Kerr at a Cubs-Cards game at Wrigley in 2002. He sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame that day.
Bob Costas doing bulls games
Wow I had no idea
Bob Costas worked for WGN-TV never knew that. Great broadcaster of all time

@@americangiant1003 He did Syracuse Blazers minor league hockey before, he said 90 per cent of what went on in the movie Slap Shot is true.
I had no idea Bob Costas did Bulls games prior to calling the 1998 NBA Finals for NBC involving MJ and company.
I always like Reggie Theus. Bob Costas is a broadcasting legend.
WGN AND The Chicago Bulls: THE TRADITION CONTINUES
Before this Bob was the announcer for the Spirits of St. Louis in the ABA.
There's a good "30 for 30" on that subject" "Free Spirits".
Would love to see this entire game
I remember later on the bulls tv theme was a Paul Simon song...”Late In The Evening”.
Nuggets won, 113-99; both teams finished the season 30-52.
Love the anthem!!
Produced & Directed by Arne Harris.
And it shows!
@@tobro3000 Arne Harris was a legendary producer-director of Cubs & Bulls telecasts on WGN for years.
I think Costas was just filling in for Jim Durham, who was the regular Bulls announcer that season.
Bob Costas, what ever became of him?
MrDuds1984 He's still working. NBC & MLB Network.
@@williamdunphy352 He has since left NBC and now with MLB Network full time.

Costas would have been a better WGN hire than Milo Hamilton. Imagine Costas and Harry Caray.
I distinctly remember Costas mentioning Jack Brickhouse among top broadcasters, though not necessarily the context. He definitely doesn't talk about working at WGN much if at all.
Does the full game exist? Very cool footage!
I didn't even get to hear the Bulls starting lineup with all the talking!!!!!
Good Go, that anthem performance.
Yeah that was a hot mess!

The basketball and competition was the event- now they manufacture the event.
11:18 did one of the players just yell "Oww?"
🤣
I am going to apologize to Carl Lewis for saying those mean things.
Lewis was worse.
@@steveprestegard5151 Correct. The second worst was Jordan's sister who sang the anthem right before Game 6 in the '93 ECF against the Knicks.
Italian night.

Bob Costas was a telecaster for the Bulls?
So many missed shots.

Primitive CHRYON GFX at the time. Not using alpha channelled slides to be used on screen (like how ‘GN was doing with Donahue)
Just thought ..just a few years later. #23 🏀 will make some history...and Costas will announce his last winning shot..in Utah! For the 3peat!
Where do they get these national anthem performers sometimes? I mean yikes! I feel bad/embarrassed for a lot of these singers at times. >.>
