Roger Daltrey's vocals in this are legendary. Townshend's lyrics really epitomize someone with Jekyll and Hyde feelings. Then you get Keith Moon going nuts on the drums. My only criticism of the song is that it is far too short. I always want more of the frenetic activity.

The bass lines by "The Ox" (aka John Entwistle) really make this track for me. I'm a guitar player and Townsend's riffs, both acoustic and electric, are nothing short of legendary but Entwistle's counter melody behind the acoustic guitar on the verses is just amazing. And he makes it sound, and even look, quite simple to play. Until you try to play it yourself, that is. "The Ox" is one of the most influential bass players in the history of Rock & Roll.

For my money, the best song on the album is "The Song Is Over," with "Gettin' In Tune" a close second. But the whole album is so good that I can't fault anyone who ranks it differently.
"Love, Reign O'er Me" is well worth a listen, but honestly so is all of Quadrophenia, and it has more emotional weight with everything that comes before it on the album. So I'd say if you want to get off Who's Next for a bit, go for "Slip Kid." (They gave Keith Moon a cowbell for that one.)

A great song for the older RSR family members, who remember The Who in their day, is Pete Townshend's "Slit Skirts." When it came out the message of growing old and changing really hit me -- and I was 22! LOL... Now I'm 62... and it hits even harder -- but beautifully. One of genius Pete's best on his own from The Who.

that all my angst just...melted away. The first part just kills me so good it brings tears to my blue eyes...
The second part is pure humanity that reminds me that while some of us are long peninsulas, no man is an island...
Speaking of islands, my suggestions after this reaction is Simon and Garfunkel's *I Am A Rock* which ties into this tune rather nicely...

When you have been utterly destroyed emotionally, cut deep and hurt bad but had to hide that pain and carry on for
the sake of others who are innocent and still need you to be strong for them. When you've had to swallow that pain
and bury that anger deep behind a façade, bite your tongue and pretend to be happy when you truly never can be again.
Then even years later you can listen to this song and cry, scream let out your demons and then pull yourself together and
    carry on again.

This song will always remind me of my brother (who I’m estranged from) when he was in his late teens, playing guitar, singing & recording it in his room for hours. He’s now 64, hard to believe how fast time flies. Awesome, though very sad song!

Worth mentioning that despite all the talent in the band for most of their earlier career Keith Moon, the drummer, was considered the most talented part of the band. An interesting note is that Animal from the Muppets was based on Moon's drumming style. Unfortunately Moon's drug addiction wasted him away, but one Hell of a drummer!

This song was released shortly before I entered high school, and it became my theme song for the next few years. I was a geek / social reject that got picked on a lot, so I related to the line "my love is vengeance, that's never free." (and of course, I have blue eyes.) I'm 65 now and long, long over that, but the song always brings back memories.

Awesome! This is one of my favorite songs by them. If you want to hear their earlier sound, try "Magic Bus." The Who also has infused a fun quirky sense of humor into some of their songs. If you want to hear something fun, try "Boris the Spider."

This song was written from the view of a villain, or Bad guy. As he sings "No one knows what it's like to be hated...or be the Bad man." Such a unique perspective. It almost makes you say, "Even bad people, can have feelings, and hurt."

@@marybaillie8907 I'm not disagreeing with that, but I can't see how it can be considered a farewell tour, as they were still playing dates up to October 1976. I saw them in London in May 1976 and it wasn't billed as a farewell at the time.

@ViscountVile I just checked on line and The Who had 4 "Final Tours" which may be our problem.
Back in those days, many bands would announce final tours, only to reappear on tour later on. So I'm not sure which final tour is which. 🤣🤣 Take care 🎶🎶🇨🇦👏

I do not recall if you have reviewed "Love Reign o'er Me"? It comes off the album Quadrophenia and yes it is a part of the story the whole album covers and many viewers will beg you "you have to listen to the entire album". Trust me, the music, the lyrics, the tone, the sound effects can illict a perfectly plausible response without listening to the entirety of the album. I, again, promise you that you will ENJOY this song.

I was born the year this song was released, so I was to young to have seen the band with Moon, but got to see them Live once with John, and twice without. I became a fan in the early 90's, and they have been my favorite band ever since, just an amazing group front to back, and head to toe. Pete is without question one of rocks best song writers(and a very good guitarist), as you can easily tell from this tune. Keith was an amazing drummer who lost a few steps in his later years, but in top form, is one of rocks best. John as a bass player was the GOAT, and Rodger on vocals was a perfect fit to Pete's songs, and was one of rocks best front men who still has it 50+ years later. Do yourselves a favor, and watch some of their LIVE content, as they were as much a visual band, as they were audio. And much of their career was filmed in 35MM film, and all this time later, most footage looks and sounds amazing. Long Live Thee OOOOoooooo!!!
