You're not alone! Their innovative music and lyrics, along with the top notch talent of Keith's drumming, Pete's guitar work, John's bass along with Roger's vocals put them up there with their contemporaries the Stones and the Beatles. BTW the letter 'h' is silent in Pete's surname, Townshend.
Another absolute banger of a song on the Who's Next album is "Bargain". Daltrey's voice soars into the Stratosphere on that one as Keith Moon puts on a drum clinic. Another amazing song by The Who is "Love Reign O'er Me" on the Quadrophenia album. In my opinion, Love Reign O'er Me is the greatest song of theirs. You'll hear the soft and mellow voice of Roger Daltrey and you'll also hear the passionate Leather Lungs Daltrey growling voice.
I'll never forget when The Who performed Behind Blue Eyes at the Concert for NYC a few weeks after the atrocity on 9/11. Tears were streaming from the eyes of the firefighters, police officers, EMT's, and all the first responders who had been working at Ground Zero almost nonstop for weeks. The tears morphed into very emotional smiles when the song cranked into gear and went hard rock at the end. One of the firefighters tossed his official NYFD hat onto the stage. Roger Daltrey picked it up and said "I'm not worthy of wearing this" as he handed it back to the firefighter. The Who blew the roof off of Madison Square Garden that night with their emotional and very energetic set.
For those searching for that performance, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/aruDK5EmAl8/v-deo.htmlsi=L2wBmd3nx3Grk1R5. Behind Blue Eyes begins around the 13:10 mark, and Won’t Get Fooled Again follows. The cuts to the audience during Blue Eyes are heartwrenching. I didn’t see the FDNY helmet scene though.
I was already a who fan when that aired. I was a 13 year old in the bronx. The concert for NY CD has been in my car CD player since I got my first car! What a performance!
I was THRILLED at their performance for that concert. I have the DVD of the whole concert, so many fantastic performances but The Who played 3 or 4 songs. Won't Get Fooled Again and the reaction was priceless.
My husband listened to this song while he was in combat in Vietnam. He has blue eyes. He did not have a good war. At the worst times, this song spoke for him.
Not a “sleeper” to those if use who listened to “Who’s Next” endlessly! I was 17 in 1971 and I loved this album. Townshend wrote GREAT lyrics! “The Song is Over” is another one that has great lyrics, lovely vocals, great instrumentation, and a mix of complex rock with something reminding me of a ballad thrown in (“Excepting one note, pure and easy Playing so free, like a breath rippling by”). Phenomenal album. One of the big three, “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia” being the other two. I’m now 70 and I appreciate Townshend’s genius more and more each year.
Great song! The Who are a great British rock band formed in London in 1964. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century & have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "My Generation", "Substitute", "Happy Jack", "I Can See For Miles", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Magic Bus", "Who Are You", "Pinball Wizard" etc.
I am 77 years old, and grew up through a time when rock music was worth listening to. I manged to see The Who a few times up until the mid 70's nothing compares to the rock bands of that time.
I am always fascinated and a bit jealous of people who are not familiar with this song. This album came out when I was 12 so it's part of the soundtrack of my life. On the other hand, as a 12 year old I just enjoyed the music but you are experiencing it with adult brain that has been exposed to all kinds of music. I really like your reactions. Both the way you review the songs and the subtleties and details you pick up. Looking forward to your next reaction.
Not a sleeper at all. It is one of The WHO’s all time classic and signature songs. It is also one of rock and roll’s anthem. I have listened to this at least 2 or 3 thousand time.I think you would love reacting to This Song is Over from the same album.
"Who's Next" might be the greatest "Rock Album" of all time. It was intended as a rock-opera called "Life-House", with a full story-line and multiple characters. Although this "concept-album" fell through in 1971, the resulting "album" was astounding. Even without the intended story, the power of the different characters still came through in each song. And every song on this album is GREAT. For other classics, I particularly recomend "The Song is Over" and "Going Mobile".
The album is perfection. The band was nervous about how it would be received after the smashing success of Tommy. I saw them do this in concert. It was TREMENDOUS!
The Who are incredible. On your own, you might want to check out their live album, Live at Leeds. It's one of the best rock live albums ever. And don't forget their rock opera, Tommy. It's amazing.
Pete wrote this song about a family member who did the unthinkable to him as a child, now with that said the first time they did this song live he almost had a panic attack on stage but its part of an album called "Tommy" and there was a movie made called "Tommy" that is really awesome about a blind kid who is the best at pinball even though he's deaf and blind. Elton John also collaborated in some of the music and movie. It's a really good movie and the concert for Tommy is just out of this world! Pete wrote every song for The Who and on one album they needed to fill up 10 more minutes of space and their manager told Pete to write a song for that spot and Pete thought he was nuts, he said songs are 3 to 4 minutes long but he kept thinking about it and that's how themed albums happened. Pete ended up writing a whole story in songs which turned into "Tommy"
Uncle Ernie - the character in Tommy, must have represented the 'family member who did the unthinkable to him'. Kieth Moon played that role in the movie.
I am an older dude, I Love you reacts because you just get it, you feel feel it, I graduated high school in 1973, 50 freakin years ago! Hard to believe, Thanks for just being you!
Back in the day Wolfman Jack was a dj on AM radio and when I was 10 I was home watching my brother one night and I wasn't feeling well I was listening to my transister radio and I called the station and told them my story and asked if Wolfman Jack would play this song. A minute later he came on the phone and talked to me. At the time that was the greatest thing that happened to me lol. I can't hear this song without thinking of that night 47yrs ago.
Salvo, imagine once upon a time this was on the radio,,,all the time...was an amazing time, such a broad range of music from folk to rock to Floyd and Led Zep, was amazing, and we took it for granted yet all that music has been with us from it's inception. I have been in Japan,, Guam, Sicily, Puerto Rico, the music from 50 or even more years ago stands the test of time, we hear it, we get all fuzzy feeling...it touches us,,,
The Who have many great songs, but my favorites continue to be their early live stuff, from around the same time this album was put out. It was at a perfect time in their career when youthful passion collided with great musicianship, creating a raw and masterfully powerful force that was unmatched. Live at Leeds catches it best and is one of the best live albums ever, recorded on a night where they were at their best, though Live at Hull is very similar. Young Man Blue, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Magic Bus or my favorite My Generation are all amazingly done. Unfortunately there's no live footage of the event, but if you want something close Young Man Blues from the Isle of Wight is a great watch.
"Happy Jack" was the first record I ever bought by The Who back in 1966. I was twelve and have loved them ever since. Got to see them at Charlton Athletic when I was nineteen and they were 'kin brilliant! Happy days 👍🇬🇧 p.s. "I'm a Boy" is also worth a listen...so funny 😀
Excellent reaction!! Every song on this album is deeply embedded in my DNA. Although at 241M on Spotify, it’s the 2nd most popular song by The Who next to Baba O’Riley, so probably not a sleeper. This band warped my brain at the tender age of 10 when they released Tommy. No regrets!!✌️❤️🔥
When I grew up, my girlfriend had two older brothers that had all of their albums, the Beatles, probably the Stones, etc. but we played The Who and Beatles over and over again.
Definitely my favorite band as I made my way out of high school in the late 70's. Waited in line for hours in crappy weather to get tickets to their show when they came to my area, shortly after Keith Moon had passed. Probably my favorite concert I ever attended.
Who's Next is one of the rare flawless albums. (For my money "The Song Is Over" is the best of the lot, but the whole thing is just THAT GOOD.) Quadrophenia is probably their best work, though - best taken all at once, though you'll get a lot of requests for "Love, Reign O'er Me" by itself. (Silent H. Towns-end.)
I completely agree....I love the emotion of this song and then the lyrics are fantastic. You are are in the top tier of reactors! You have to also laugh about the photo of the album cover....as they relieve themselves on the concrete pillar...Whos Next?
Who's Next is one of the all-time great albums - top twenty in the classic rock era. Baba O'Riley, Bargain, The Song Is Over, Getting in Tune, Going Mobile, and Won't Get Fooled Again are all great tracks off a fantastic record. The whole thing is worth a listen.
As a man with blue eyes. This song has always brought me from tears to chaotic expression. That chaos comes from love and passion. Love comes at a cost. It's truly one of my favorite songs of all time.
I loved your reaction, Salvo. 👏 The album is an absolute classic, track by track. I saw this week that it is listed among the top five greatest rock albums of all time. I would suggest that next you turn to track two, "Bargain." 👍
The Song is Over off this album is also classic. As others have commented Love Reign O’er Me is must listen. A Quick One live from Rolling Stones Rock ‘n Roll Circus is also unforgettable. If not already hooked, welcome to The Who addicts club, you will be soon!
That album is one of the all time classics in rock music. It's a great album to use as a test for any time you upgrade your audio gear. If you get a good pair of speakers or headphones, put that album on and enjoy.
re listen to this song and when the drums come in. there is no drums for HALF the song but when the DRUMS come in they really come in like nothing you will ever hear. this is Keith Moon and he has a style all his own. so much is great about this song. the lyrics the singing but to me the Drums thats what puts it over the top!
So glad to see you reacting to songs by The Who. I love this song, and was waiting to see you react to that first bass drop. And you were right, they were building to something. They get less attention than they deserve. The Who was a truly creative group that had a lot of very solid music. Yeah, you could react to this album and not have a wasted minute.
Lots of great songs on this album. Gettin in Tune and Going Mobile are fun. This album was one of the first to make me realize how much punch acoustic guitar can deliver.
Love those two songs. Pete's vocals are amazing too, but Roger had the power and I have no idea how he didn't blow out a vocal cord or two during some of those songs.
I had the privilege to see them back in the day (1989) with my future wife (1990) “The Kids Are Alright Tour” simply Amazing…. Double Rainbow over the stadium during this song (Magical) daytime show towards the end, light misting sun shower …..🌈🌈 i will never forget it 🔥❤️🎸
Great tune and so well done. One of my favs. I agree with Phil Collins that The Who were one of the best bands ever. (praise from Cesar is praise indeed)
This song was every bit as popular it its day as the other songs on this album. Every song was a hit, in terms of album purchases, even if it never got to the radio.
I was born in 71 when Who's Next was released and I didn't become a fan until the early 90's maybe, when I was exposed to "The Kids Are Alright(doc)" and "The Who 30 Years of Maximum R&B". The main songs that put me over the edge had to be WGFA the Shepperton Studios clip, and A Quick One from the Rolling Stones R&R circus clip(Watch that one ASAP). And I had similar thoughts on how can they top this or get much better? Well, 30 plus years later they're still my favorite band, and they have to many great songs and amazing live shows to even start to list. Just follow the rabbit hole and see where it leads.
Many Who fans consider "Love, Reign o'er Me" as the pinnacle of The Who's catalog. Roger's best singing, the power of The Who, the Lyrics of Pete Keith's drumming....just a masterpiece.
Great reaction once again man. You really should check out the entire WHO'S NEXT album. It's quite simply one of those precious few albums that's in the running for best albums ever. It's that good. And there's at least 3 more songs on the album just as good as the ones you've heard. Awesome stuff.
Quadrophenia is my favourite album by The Who because it fits together so well, but Who's Next is my favourite collection of songs. Even so, there are some songs on it that will generally only be heard by album listeners and are unlikely to be heavily recommended to reactors. That's because they are lighter - just a bit of fun. Deep, powerful, angry, epic, hard-hitting are the sort of adjectives you want to sell a song when you're cherrypicking - my guess is, next in line from this album would be _Bargain._ Songs like _My_ _Wife_ or _Going_ _Mobile_ just make me smile. Anyway, if you fancy looking at something earlier, you could try _I_ _Can_ _See_ _For_ _Miles_ - it was their highest-charting single in the US, and indirectly inspired a Beatles song! For bonus points also include the late, great Tina Turner's cover - it would be interesting to see someone react to the two side by side, they are very different arrangements but both worth your time.
This is the story i heard about this song and Limp Bizkit. One of the band members came in SO EXCITED!! He had dreamed a complete song in his head and it was about the best thing he had ever written! Intrigued, they all sat down as the guy played out his genius tune...as he progressed, they realized he had heard the song in his sleep, and thus...so they covered it instead to kinda rib their band mate.
Salvo, if you want other Who performances, check out their Live videos. "A Quick One While He's Away" (From "Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Circus" 1968?). This is amazing, with perhaps the greatest Drumming performance ever filmed! Also, "Young Man Blues" Live at the Isle of Wight 1970. For great Who studio recordings, try "The Real Me" and "Love Reign O'er Me", both from the "Quadrophenia" Album 1973.
Some people think the pinnacle of The Who sound is "Love, Reign o'er Me" - UA-cam has a great lyrics video of the song. You should give it a listen and put the cherry on top of your Who journey. It's a Powerful Song and Rogers Vocals are killer.
Earlier in my childhood I listened to Limp Bizkit, but I didn't know that this song was a cover of The Who, after, I couldn't remember who performed the original, thanks for reminding Salvog, great memories!
The is one of my favorite Who songs. OK... Some "Just for the fun-of-it" Who Songs - Boris the Spider (some very early Who), Magic bus and My Wife. Oh, and welcome back to the 70's... And I find that I have to 'taunt you again' (You and all your Keniggetts) - the Studio versions of 25 or 6 to 4 and Lazy are still waiting... Remember Bridge over... Just sayin'. 🎹🎹🎹 🎸🎸
The Who are the gods of Rock n' Roll along with The Beatles. The two bands were formed in 1962, along with The Rolling Stones. The Who are one of my all-time favorite bands. Two bands today are influenced by The Who. The groups are Sports Team and Cage The Elephant.
YES - listen & react to the whole album. This is my favorite, but there's Quadrophenia, Who Are You and TOMMY. I think Roger said that if he wasn't singing in the band, he'd be out fighting somewhere, or something to that effect. Roger has the blue eyes, so I wonder if it is about him. Never really looked to see.
In 1982 The Who announced their first farewell tour, the last stop they did was in Toronto which was broadcast on tv. My brother was going out that night and asked me to videotape it. I had heard a couple of their songs before but had never seen perform live, they made me a fan from that concert. Pete Townshend doing his windmills and bunny hops, Daltrey just being a powerful singer, Entwistle being the quiet one, and Kenny Jones doing a good job even if he wasn't as bombastic and crazy as Keith Moon, but no one could fill Keith Moons shoes. I saw them during their second farewell tour in 1989. I got kicked out for smoking pot while Daltrey was singing the lyric "Hey you smoking mother nature, this here's a bust" which is from the song "We're not Going to Take it", not to be confused with the Twisted Sister song of the same title. They have so many great songs.
I love the build up and the different moods of this song. Really beautiful in my opinion. Roger and The Who quickly growing on me.
This entire album is perfect. There is no bad song on it, not even close. One of the greatest albums of all time.
@@steveullrich7737 The Mt Rushmore of British rock is Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin.
You just nailed exactly what this song is about, IMHO. This has always been my The Who go-to sing!

Another absolute banger of a song on the Who's Next album is "Bargain". Daltrey's voice soars into the Stratosphere on that one as Keith Moon puts on a drum clinic. Definitely one of my favorite songs and this album (Who’s Next) is a masterpiece, definitely listen to the entire album
Song is Over and Bargain are definitely worth checking out.

Yes, absolutely. 👍
If there is a Mount Olympus for rock bands, The Who lives up there among the greats of all time.
The entire album is what you call fire. It deserves a listen. I bought it new in 1971 and it's still in my play list.
In my correct opinion, the best rock album front to back, in rock history.
"Who's Next" is such a great album. "Bargain" rounds out my top four from it.

Every song on Who's Next is a classic.
One of my favorites!! Explained a lot of my adolescence. Great choice!!
This song was every bit as popular it its day as the other songs on this album. Every song was a hit, in terms of album purchases, even if it never got to the radio.
The Who. angry Hippies. got'a love it.
This entire album was the sounds and anthems of my youth
Many Who fans consider "Love, Reign o'er Me" as the pinnacle of The Who's catalog. Roger's best singing, the power of The Who, the
Lyrics of Pete Keith's drumming....just a masterpiece.
Great reaction once again man. You really should check out the entire WHO'S NEXT album. It's quite simply one of those precious few albums that's in the running for best albums ever. It's that good. And there's at least 3 more songs on the album just as good as the ones you've heard. Awesome stuff.
Who's Next is one of the greatest albums ever made. Top 5 for me. Had it on 8-track back in the day and it was one long song for me.
When I was young I would call this my theme song. (Now it's "Take Me Home" by Concrete Blonde).
Who Are You is amazing. The video is great seeing them larking around in the recording studio! Also, My Generation is fantastic!
Thanks, Salvo - one of my favorites... I always make my brother play this on guitar.. lol
Love love this song
Loved this song…definitely hints at the rock opera vibe the band was also known for. Great react.. keep’em coming!
Behind Blue Eyes always make me think of Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West
"Going Mobile " is also a good one off this same album
Salvo, if you want other Who performances, check out their Live videos. "A Quick One While He's Away" (From "Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Circus" 1968?). This is amazing, with perhaps the greatest Drumming performance ever filmed! Also, "Young Man Blues" Live at the Isle of Wight 1970. For great Who studio recordings, try "The Real Me" and "Love Reign O'er Me", both from the "Quadrophenia" Album 1973.
What an awesome album cover - pissing on some monument.
You won't be disappointed by any song on this album.
Love Reign O’er Me is going to blow your mind.
One of my favorite Who songs!
One of my favorites from The Who
Some people think the pinnacle of The Who sound is "Love, Reign o'er Me" - UA-cam has a great lyrics video of the song. You should
give it a listen and put the cherry on top of your Who journey. It's a Powerful Song and Rogers Vocals are killer.
The Who was never folk anything, just straight up ROCK.
I love The Who
Top 10 best rock album of all time
Earlier in my childhood I listened to Limp Bizkit, but I didn't know that this song was a cover of The Who, after, I couldn't remember who performed the original, thanks for reminding Salvog, great memories!
Fred Durst did a decent cover...right up until they shamelessly plugged Limp Biskit.
🎹🎹🎹 🎸🎸
There are no bad songs on Who's Next. You can't miss.
The Who are the gods of Rock n' Roll along with The Beatles. The two bands were formed in 1962, along with The Rolling Stones. The Who are one of my all-time favorite bands. Two bands today are influenced by The Who. The groups are Sports Team and Cage The Elephant.
“That album” is one of the greatest of all time. Who’s Next album is amazing. But you need to go mobile! 😂❤️😂 check the track list.
That’s possibly my favorite The Who song. For something more fun- if you haven’t tried Squeeze Box by them- check that out
Honestly I rank Who’s Next #1 and Quadraphenia #2. It’s close, but every freakin’ song on Who’s Next is incredibly classic & memorable
❤❤❤❤
Does anyone know who did the graphics for these lyrics? Really fitting; really lovely. ♡
Arguably their best album
Bargain also flies under the radar on this album
Just a great album. Overshadowed by some of the other songs, this was definitely a Sleeper! It was one of the first albums I had on cassette.
Taj Farrant....Crossroads blues player from Australia 🔥🎵🎶 Peace ✌️
Yea that Townshits is pretty good!😂 all jokes aside. I loved your reaction and look foward to more of The Who reactions!
