  • Happy Fourth of July!
    I wanted to join in on the festivities by making a colorful flame concoction using methanol and various chemical colorants.

    I just mixed potassium nitrate and sugar and filled a balloon with hydrogen for my chemistry fireworks

      I'm still here! I've just had a lot going on recently. I have several things in the works though. It's possible I try to do too many things at once.

    whered you get that strontium chloride because that bottle looks really similar to mine from benchmark chemistry

      Mine was from MakerShed. I bought a bunch of stuff when they were closing out their chemistry section. Sad day, but I got some good deals!

      +brainy the amateur chemist you can get it from road flares, it actually doesn't need methanol to burn, it burns on its own.

    this is a lot to ask but can u do a smoke bomb from stump remove :(potassium nitrate) and table sugar

      I've done that a lot actually, but never filmed it. Actually my original idea for this video was to make colored versions of 'rocket candy' as it's called, but it didn't really work out. It's on the list of videos to make!

    After reading about it And it's hazards, methanol seems kinda like a boogie man of chemicals, is it as bad as they say toxicity wise? Especially with so many people using it recreationally

    • @jamie91995
      @jamie91995 8 років тому +2

      NO, THAT IS BS. In MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, it's vapors are harmless, no irritation of nose throat or eyes, I didn't feel nauseous or anything, I couldn't even smell it, I have gotten it on my skin and it never irritated me, it is only dangerous when ingested, 10 milliliters can blind you and 30 milliliters can kill you. Just don't drink it, don't intentionally sniff it, wear goggles, and wear gloves and you will be fine. Methanol however is "known to the state of California to cause cancer" but just about everything (including aspirin, testosterone, wood, leather, toluene, and xylene) is known to the state of California to cause cancer. But it is no big deal unless you ingest it, inhale very large amounts of it's vapors, get it in your eyes, or bathe in it.

      Interestingly the "antidote" to methanol ingestion is to drink regular alcohol! It's not that toxic until metabolized by the liver, so the idea is to flood the liver with ethanol before the methanol has a chance to get there. Still, don't drink it! It WILL blind and probably kill you. Regardless of how benign or toxic a chemical may be, it's always a good idea to wear gloves and goggles when working with things.

      +mrhomescientist it breaks down into formaldehyde, then formic acid, which makes formate salts which cause nervous system problems.

    Is that the 4th of July fireworks going off in the background or is that a typical day in the US with its gun laws?

    • @UberDubers22
