The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
    Some are famous.
    And some infamous....
    ....and some with tragic endings.

Myrtle Vance was my cousin obviously it’s been a couple generations, but she is my family. I thank you for sharing her story and ensuring her dignity while you did so. What that poor baby went through is something no one deserves to ever go through speaking from the voice of personal experience. There is no penalty harsh enough for these monsters.

Micheale - I try to do things very respectfully. I am pleased to hear that you felt that I ensured Myrtle's dignity here in my production.
There is no punishment great enough for this crime. I know of it were my child, I would feel the same. We lost our daughter when she was 21. She was basically murdered by a driver who tried to commit suicide and arbitrarily picked her as the oncoming vehicle method. So I do know what it’s like to lose a child in a violent way.
Our daughter’s death was instant. Little Myrtle, well, I can’t even imagine.

Something I haven't until recently thought about, is how consequential a grave site like this is. Not just to the public, but to imagine the moments and pain the family felt, standing right where you are standing right now. Staring at the ground, and that thought that always sneaks in, that you too will be buried right here. And then one day, you are. These graves hold so much more than just a marker.

A female witness was saying she was on the bus, and they could see the toddler being swung around by the leg. She screams out IS SOMEBODY GOING TO DO SOMETHING ? But no one does so the bus continues on its journey . You could see it was destroying her the guilt of not helping the poor lad.

Today, the families of victims get no justice in court because the prosecutors represent the law and it is all about the criminal. I sat in court as the boy who shot my goddaughter 7 times in a Texas school shooting, laughed and talked with his mother. Teachers testified and praised him because he always left the room and went in the hallway when he was upset as his IEP allowed. His friends and relatives packed his side of the courtroom. Despite their best effort to portray this monster as a good kid, he finally pled guilty to get a lesser charge. He committed suicide in prison several years later. My goddaughter miraculously survived, and has done her best to move on with her life. She is married and still has medical issues and nightmares from that fateful day. He said he shot her because she refused to date him. Vigilante justice is wrong, but so are the courts who make a circus out of a crime and draw out the victim’s pain. He was known to be violent and students were afraid of him; yet his rights were more important than the safety of the other students. His list of violent and cruel behavior is long. His friends who overheard him the night before threatening that he was going to kill her got no punishment at all for not reporting the threat.

I think it bears mentioning to folks who may come to this and wonder why the Sheriff didn't do more to protect Henry from the mob. The simple fact of the matter is... he wanted to, but he couldn't. Leading up to the train carrying Henry arriving in Paris, he was in communication with the Governor of Texas, and made it clear from the start, that a mob of between 5000, and 10,000 people had gathered. He actually is recorded having told the Governor "I am helpless. Have no support." The Sheriff wanted help from the state militia (today that'd be the national guard), and anyone he could get. The Assistant County Attorney (Today that'd be Assistant District Attorney) reiterated the problem, telling the Governor "Officers are helpless. An enraged public stands waiting for the prisoner, who is expected at 1 o'clock." Later, when the train arrived, the Sheriff contacted the Governor saying " "Henry Smith has arrived and is in charge of from 5,000 to 10,000 enraged citizens. I am utterly helpless to protect him."
    Now, why is this important?
At the time this happened, the Sheriff's Department consisted of about 10 total deputies. I say about, because the data varies somewhat when you look to census data and records.
So, best case scenario, there were 10 deputies... against an estimated 5000, to 10,000 people. At that time, Paris own population was only around 2000 people... so the majority of that mob had come from outside the county or city. The Sheriff wanted to do his duty and see to it that Henry stood trial... but he couldn't. There wasn't the support he needed, and once the mob took him, there wasn't a single thing the Sheriff could do to prevent what happened.

As the narrator said, there is no way to know if the child was violated. Perhaps that was just a rumor that went around that stoked the mob's fury to such a horrible lynching (all lynchings are horrible, this one was especially brutal, especially when the victim's family had their 15 year old son! participate. I mean what did that do to him? Was he willing or did he feel he had no choice?). Then why did the perp's stepson have to die? He had no part in this. He was an innocent man. What happened to the perp's wife? Something just as bad? We will never know.

My Dad saw "colored water fountains " and segregated movie theater where they kicked his best friend out of line because it was the white line. @ Calvin, I don’t see myself as a weak and hypocritical person. I see myself as a child of God, who said “vengeance is mine”. And who asked us to forgive those who have sinned against us. I do believe in justice, and this man deserved to be punished for what he did. Hanging was the punishment given him for his horrific crime. Mob justice went above and beyond his sentence. And for your information, I did lose a child, 10 yrs old, due to the actions of the adult who was responsible at the time. So yes, I do understand the fury and bitterness that accompanies the overwhelming grief. Unless you know what someone has personally been through, please keep your judgment and opinions to yourself.

He did the unforgivable to that little girl and paid for a life with his own, which I believe he truly deserved, especially when there was irrefutable evidence that it was he that did it. However, his family should not have had happen to them what did. It was that man's crime, his decision. and not something his family told him to do nor took part in with him. They should not have had to be a part of any "justice", they played no part in Myrtle's brutalising or murder. Poor child. I feel sorry for the rest of her family too. Nobody should have to live through what they lived through.

Such a interesting but so sad story about this dear child. My mother name was Myrtle. Born 1915 and lived 99 years. So sad little Myrle didn't live a full life. I throught he got what he deserved. Be safe traveling. Always look forward to your next adventure into history.

When I hear about how a mob would torture and lynch someone, it seemed like what they would do was as bad or worse than what the person accused had done. How does it make them any better? They would legally tortured and murder someone and apparently be pleased with themselves. It was ALWAYS many many people against one or two accused, never just a few.

Grew up going to Paris to visit my meema's, many, many moons ago. I heard this girl's sad story. So sad. Also was told Bonney and Claude rode through there. Thanks for sharing her story and bringing me back to Paris
