There are several of these monumental cemeteries in Italy. Some, like the Staglieno cemetery in Genoa, are quite famous and contain priceless statues and bronzes by renowned artists of the time
My grandparents and many of my uncles, aunts, and cousins were buried in the old graveyard in our town. The monuments were incredible. My grandparents owned/operated a small grocery store directly across the street from a stonemason. It was fascinating to visit. He often gave us scraps of granite, marble to play with

Such an amazing cemetery with all the decorative burial plots, but yes, I would find it overwhelming and depressing after a while. Thanks for posting. I like hearing the names. RIP.
I always think of it as visiting the lonely. Whenever I go to a cemetery I focus on the peacefulness of it, the connection I feel to those who came before us and helped give us all the things we cherish today, and how no matter how hard/easy their lives were, at least now they are resting together. I like to visit so that they are not forgotten and I tell myself that I am a guest coming over to take away some of their tedium. The truly sad ones are the neglected ones in run down and possibly singular settings.

I've seen a number of those porcelain picture medallions on grave stones, they still make those but the modern ones are applied with adhesive which will fail and can be pried off, the old ones Ive seen were actually embedded into a recess cut into the stone, so they dont fall off, and are basically pry-proof. The ones Ive seen were in B&W and I think were between the 1870s and 1920s, and they really give you a look at the person as they once appeared!

Not fancy, but an old pioneer cemetery near my home has 4 markers for a family's lost children: 4 lost on the same date in August. Illness, fire, failed river crossing, something more nefarious? Always makes me sad.
I think the baby as braking out of the grave and going up to heaven. I think that's what it's meant to represent. There's a grave of a little maybe 10 yr old boy -- how they made it I don't know. You see the wheel chair and a little boy looks so happy as he's leaving his chair while reaching up with his arms to the sky. It's meant to show that he's free -- free of pains & sickness and like he's being brought to heaven where he can run & play --and be very loved. He was finally not in pain anymore People leave toys as gifts. That child's parent's loved their sick child very much & set up a fund & foundation that would help parents pay for their sick children. So when I saw the little baby reaching upwards out of his or her tomb maybe it's supposed to show the same as the boy in the wheelchair. It's just another sick child who suffered & died body wise but the child's soul was now free and Jesus would gently hold that child and love and make that child we'll again.. Anyway, that's my take on it
A fascinating tour Dan, Thank you.. always sad when there are children, and that wee baby reaching out towards Heaven with outstretched arms (at least that is how I think the family meant it to be) perhaps a child that had suffered in it's year on this Earth..God Bless them all and you to Dan stay safe and well.
It was a lot cheaper back then, nowadays those bronze portraits, busts and medallions would cost 5-6 figures each, there is a LOT of labor and a lot of steps involved in making each one! I had a couple of my older standing dog models cast in bronze recently, they are about 6" tall and they cost me over $500 each JUST for the foundry simply casting my wax into bronze, I did all the rest of the work. Take that $500 for a 6" tall sculpture and then look at some of those ful bodied standing figures in the video and figure out what is involved in making those and the cost!
@@DeuDeoEgo Yes, I would say this graveyard was for the wealthy. They say "You can't take it with you", but some people can .obviously spend a lot of "it" on a grand tombstone.

What year was it?The years before antibiotics?
@@hattiem.7966 yes.
@@wichita603 I don't remember the exact year. But it is from the early pioneer days here in Washington state.
The baby's grave was terrifying.
Totally agree!! Yikes! Who would even want something like that!?!🪬♥️🧿🪦🧿♥️🪬
I think the baby as braking out of the grave and going up to heaven.
He was finally not in pain anymore
People leave toys as gifts.
Anyway, that's my take on it
@@RuthShelton-ou4idA wonderful thought that can only come from a sensitive soul, thank you.

You are so welcome. Have a wonderful & blessed week.☘️
@@RuthShelton-ou4id I’ve seen a photograph of that memorial, as a wheelchair user I found it quite moving.
Those headstones/gravemarkers are absolutely beautiful ,RIP to all
A fascinating tour Dan, Thank you.. always sad when there are children, and that wee baby reaching out towards Heaven with outstretched arms (at least that is how I think the family meant it to be) perhaps a child that had suffered in it's year on this Earth..God Bless them all and you to Dan stay safe and well.
These are works of art. So beautiful
Great series Dan. Nice to get a glimpse of of you at the end
Wow, these people have the money for all those art works.
So very sad about the baby and the children Rest in Sweet HEAVENLY PEACE Dear Sweet departed 🎉🎉🎉 I TRULY Love how the graveyard is built it's respectful and you don't have to walk on the other graves to get to your Loved ones like in some other graveyards ⚰️🪦⚱️⚰️🪦⚱️
Just amazing the head stones and statues it’s art a beautiful tribute to all who are having their forever rest 🙏
Thank you for walking in the heat and show casing the beauty there. I hope no one complains about your stomach or your feet. Grazie.
Thanks Dan great series, fantastic sculptures, well done in all those walks, it would get to me seeing all those babies ones, so thanks for showing us all you’ve been to there
Thank you for the tour. I am not one to travel so very interesting to see other cultures and how they honor their loved ones. Not sure which one you were referring to that said it was so sad you had to walk away and quit. The baby coming out of the headstone was a bit creepy but not really sad. Thanks again for the tour.
Clickbait title. Lol
the one of the man in bed and the lady taking care of him is so so incredible and those look to have been some well off people with lots of money.this is a grand cemetary for the wealthy.
The Sculptures are Amazing. Cemetery is unbelievably beautiful
If a graveyard could be called beautiful this is it,wow just wow
Priceless sculptures, thanks for taking me on the walk with you, but the sculpture of baby reaching out was rather depressing.
Those Graves were so lovely. Living in the States, I don't see much statuary. The Italians respect their dead. Thank you for a very interesting video ❤
It's more for a show of wealth of the deceased and their family.
These grave stones were INCREDIBLE....NEVER seen them so amazing like that.
Many more recent burial sites seem to focus on the material, however, this cemetery definitely has the focus of a lasting memorial in stone by master sculptors. I’ve never seen works like this. Wow!
