      BrandonMusicChannel Me too. But this happened also outside of NASCAR in 2008 when at the final race of the Formula One season Felipe Massa did everything he needed to do and won the Brazilian Grand Prix and the championship in front of his home crowd. For 30 seconds he was until Lewis Hamilton passed Timo Glock for P5 on the last corner of the season to finish 5th, earning him enough to win his 1st F1 championship by that pass. So Jeff Gordon isn’t alone even though at Phoenix it was to race into the final four at Homestead Miami. Felipe Massa lost the championship when he won the race in front of his home fans and Lewis Hamilton broke the hearts of Brazilian Formula One fans by finishing in fifth and winning the drivers championship by one point. Yeah. So that being said they’re both similar stories at different racetracks but are on different racing circuits. Jeff Gordon in NASCAR. And Felipe Massa in Formula One. So both have similar stories but run different race circuits but both ended up the same way no matter what.

      To be fairly honest, gorgeous didn't deserve that title due to how much Gordon was being a prick that year. Got all mad at Brad Keselowski for a situation that Brad was forced to be in. If a championship is on the line and you see a move that could potentially help you win the race and move on to the championship 4, most people will take that opportunity.

    • @RacingWorldTV202
      @RacingWorldTV202 6 років тому +4

      Nerfgunner 360 In that case, you could argue that Gordon was forced into the situation of going high on the restart and dive it off the corner in order to slingshot by Johnson and Keselowski off of turn 2 and take the lead. It would've worked but Keselowski was there and the incident happened. They both did what they needed to do and ultimately I think it boiled down to an error on pit road by his team which put him a lap down. Gordon was consistently the best all season but just didn't lock up the title due to some extenuating circumstances.

      The system would make sense if you could no longer race when you’re eliminated. When the MLB playoffs start, there are 6 teams locked into the best-of-5 division series and 4 other teams competing for one game competition to get the last two spots and the losers go home. There’s not 20 other teams that you still have to play around. They’re at home on the couch watching the show because they didn’t show results in the regular season. Just my two cents. Once you’re eliminated, your car should be in the garage if you ask me.

I hate those seasons because it was frustrating to see a dominant season become obsolete in 2007, and then there's this one. The year I hated the Penske Boys and acted like an angry football fan that one night in Texas.
    Four years later, it pains me to watch that season except I no longer hate either Penske guy as much. Hell, that race was the first time I ever rooted so hard for Jimmie to win and I couldn't stand his dominance for so long. I was at the 2014 Brickyard 400. The Texas race made me cheer for him even more, and unfortunately the Phoenix race made me hang up my fan hat of Ryan Newman. Fellow Hoosier though he may be, Newman wrecked Larson to get into a battle he didn’t deserve to be in. A champion who has 4 wins should have been in the final four as opposed to a non champion who has 0 wins. That is my opinion of course, life isn’t fair. May I point out that Newman gave Harvick hell at Homestead and could've won the championship had his car had been a little bit better. I would like to ask you a question. Let's say you need 1 point to advance to the final round (which that one point really mattered since Johnson didn't get that one extra point got the 3-way tie with Aric and Larson and ultimately got eliminated from the round of 12 at the Charlotte Roval race in 2018) which could determine if you make or not. It's the final corner and the guy your racing for position is battling you hard and your both side by side, what do you do? A. Not wreck him and lose any chances of winning a Championship or B. Put him up into the wall. The driver would understand your decision. What do you do and why? A civilized answer would be appreciated.

      Now, to your point I 100% understand why Newman did what he did and know that if he had a better car he might have won the championship. I don’t have to like that, but I get why Newman did it.

    This was the last ounce of magic that Jeff Gordon had. This was the year that could have been a championship celebration for him. I hated how it had to end because Jeff was good that year and I knew that he was going to retire that year or the year after and I knew that 2014 would be his last multi-win season. But no regrets, he had a fine career otherwise but he was one of the drivers that NASCAR screwed with the new format and it messed up a lot of drivers and their careers. We'll never know how many drivers could have been great had the format not changed, it may have even given some drivers the hope and motivation to keep going. To a driver, it's so demoralizing to be "eliminated" and it is almost like being told you cannot race anymore and that hurts a team's momentum. But in the end, Jeff Gordon is a champion and he got 4 and certainly was good enough to get three more in 2004, 2007, and 2014 to put him right there with Earnhardt and Petty, I know that much. Just appreciate it for what it is, Jeff's last competitive year, he would win at Martinsville the next year but that year was different.

We watched and cheered on Jeff every week for over 20 years. My dad got sick in the summer, and seeing Jeff win at Dover with him was one of the greatest NASCAR moments in my life; Jeff getting hit by Keslowski at Texas was one of the worst. If you needed to finish in a certain position and someone is not willing to give it to you and continues to race you very aggressively, you might as well put them into the wall and everything was on the line for Newman just look how Homestead came out with Newman almost winning the championship. Had he not made that move it would have been a cruise for Harvick but Newman gave Harvick hell. That is the best move in the Chase/playoffs ever

    Gordon should have been a 7 time champion. He was robbed by NASCAR for being too good. 2004 he scored the most points and 2007 he was obviously the best. He lost because of the system more than the competitors. 2014 was the same way. And before you say “they all races under the same rules” these rules are atrocious and broken! Brian France’s little panic button points system is the catalyst for NASCAR falling out of favor! And it is what made Jimmie Johnson the 7 time champ. Have him try to win 5 in a row via a points system where you have to be the best all year... COULDN’T DO IT... Also, 2014 and the fact that Ryan Newman, a guy who should have been outside the top 10 in points got to compete for the title and Jeff didn’t should show how stupid and broken the system is... with Brian France out of the picture, maybe Jim can give the fans what they want!

      @nascarfanatic2425 6 років тому +2

      @@AgtWashingtub Yeah. NASCAR was Chase/Playoff free for it's first 55 seasons. (1948-2003) There were some changes to the points format over the years, but the one we had back in 2003 was the one we had since 1972. As soon as Brian France became CEO, the Chase got implemented, and it got changed every 3-4 years.
      2004-2006: 10+ man format.
      2007-2010: 12 man format.

      2014-2016: Chase grid format.

    I was never much of a Gordon fan (have a ton of respect for the guy and always will, just never cheered for him to win.) nor a Keselowski fan, so I'd like to think I am unbiased here. With that said I did not blame Keselowski for Texas in 2014 and I don't now either. And I know that I'm in the minority in this but I've been meaning to say this for a while, and this seemed like a good video.
    For starters, Keselowski entered the Texas race after a bad showing at Martinsville and was 26 points below the cut line. He needed a win either here or Martinsville and he knew it. As it was he ended up third in both of the races and still was 7 points out. Keselowski was going to take chances and I can't say I blame the guy for it.
    I also believe Gordon did leave a gap. Look at 7:58, clearly enough room for Keselowski to fit his car here. Sure the gap closed up going into the turn but Keselowski had already committed to going for the spot and he came up while Gordon came down. I chalk that up to a racing incident and the system forcing drivers into these must win scenarios. There was no way Keselowski was going to back out there, not with 2 laps to go and a potential championship on the line.
    I actually blame Gordon's crew more for what happened. Yes, shit hit the fan, but Gordon's crew handled it as bad as they possibly could have. His left rear was flat and Johnson was coming around to take the caution flag. What does his pit crew do? Slowly make their way around to the RIGHT side (why?), change two tires really slowly, then even after dropping the jack the crew chief hesitates a good 1-2 seconds before letting Gordon go...still with a flat tire mind you. He lost the lap which he never should have lost and in my opinion that cost Gordon the championship. Not Keselowski, not Newman, Gordon came to Homestead and had a car faster than all of the championship four as well. This year would have been his if not for his crew's bonehead move on pit road after the Keselowski incident.
    To this day, I consider that one of the worst crew chief calls in my recent memory, along with Adam Stevens in the 2017 homestead race. Because both instances most likely cost their drivers a championship and anyone with an ounce of common sense could have made the right call in both instances.

    • @nascarfanatic2425
      @nascarfanatic2425 6 років тому +7

      You know what, even though I do blame Keselowski, I have to agree with you on that. The crew knew the left rear was blown, so why throw that race away? Jeff missed advancing by 1 point, and as strong as his car was, and as many cars as there were on the lead lap, Jeff could've made that up easily on fresh tires. So even though Keselowski initiated the situation, the #24 crew was ultimately who blew it.

      @BrettMKW 6 років тому +1

      2016 was fine. I'm talking about 2017 when Adam Stevens decided to do the last part of the race on one stop instead of two. Kyle had the best car of the four and was ahead of the four. His closest competitor at the time that they all decided to pit was Truex, who was nearly 4 seconds behind at that point. All he had to do was literally keep Kyle on the exact same strategy as the rest of them and he wins. Adam did not have to work any magic that race to get Kyle the championship. Instead he pits, risking that the race goes green to the finish. Yellow comes out at a bad time and Kyle was unable to make up the difference. As soon as I saw Adam make the call to leave Kyle out and do the race on one stop I knew it was a terrible decision.

    Jeff by the end of his career was being punished by fate for what seemed to be his early successes.. he had it so easy back in the rainbow days but once he got older and more mature he had such BS to deal with all the time.. it's so sad. I grew up as Jeff fan and I still love him now; he deserved so much better. Nascar went out of their way to make sure it would be tough for him to win #5 and as a result it created a monster which helped down the sport for a good while. Nascar in the 00's woulda been so much more enjoyable if they have never forced the chase BS.. Jeff woulda won 1-3 more like he deserved to do.. Stewart woulda done well still, Edwards and Hamlin coulda become champs, and Johnson would have 1-3 titles, not 7. It's a joke. The 2014 system's the worst thing they coulda done as Newman's folly made it fail instantly.

    Imagine having your last 4 races in a playoff type format where your worst position and car is at Phoenix (being a 2nd place car) and still not making the championship round. Everybody knows that Gordon is the most snake bitten driver in NASCAR since 2001.

    We can’t really say Jeff would be a 7 time champion without the chase because the game would be played differently, he could’ve still been stuck on four or he may have had 9 there’s no way to truly know.

    I also notice that Matt Kenseth has had bad luck with winning both a 2nd Championship and a 3rd Daytona 500...

    He would have won like the next 2 championships under the old format when they first started the chase format instead.

    Great video, however I wished you had elaborated more on his last season where you had Kyle Busch who did race the entire season win the championship when it should have been Gordon solely on top.

    I never knew _THAT'S_ how Newman got into the final four... I'd almost rather have a championship format that *required* a win than have that happen again.

    Great video, you could do multiple missing rings for each year of that format because that era of format yielded Champions that weren't expected and were all won on the case of misfortune meeting others leading to their demise from contention, in the various rounds.
    In my view here are my missing rings for those 3 seasons where more than one driver deserved that championship, I know only 1 driver can be crowned champion but more than one driver lost that chance to fight for the championship through other issues and had the speed and the consistency during the season to win the championship. 2014: Dale Jr (what if Talladega didn't end in a wreck, Martinsville win would have locked a spot at Miami and Jr was good there at that time), Joey Logano 2015: Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano (tale of two missing championship fighters affecting each other, who knows what a clean Logano/Kenseth fight at Homestead would have yielded that year) and Kevin Harvick 2016: Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr, Carl Edwards. 2016 you could do a video on Edwards then the others together and their woes of misfortune are similar; both dominated that season but fell out due to engine failures at Talladega. That championship should have had a different final four altogether where Truex, Keselowski, Harvick and either Edwards or Logano should have fought at Homestead and I think NASCAR saw that too introducing the playoff points for 2017.

    I know I didn't comment in time (a couple of months) but I think that an Elimination process was a great idea. I would only have a few changes though. If you won, you don't automatically get into the next round, but you come out with maybe 70 points with the stage racing. And have only 1 elimination race. The round 16-8 races (except for ISM(yes Phoenix had a complete change and looks much different)) and have ISM serve as the elimination race for remanding drivers. If a driver falls more then 3 full races behind, then they are eliminated as ISM RaceWay decides which four or five drivers compete for the Championship in a 3 race championship round. The first and second race will be randomized tracks so all of the races could potentially be wild card races. An example would be Race 1 being Sonoma, Race 2 being Bristol but round 3 will always be Homestead. Whoever has the most points by the end of the Championship round, is your Champion.

    I wish that NASCAR would have the balls to not allow playoff cars and non-playoff cars to compete in the same race. Give the non-playoff cars a 100-mile consolation race for points run on the same day. Sure, you'd have a 4-car, 267-lap race for Homestead, and three 8-car races leading up to that, but at least that would make the playoff somewhat legitimate.
