The thing about Casshern is that he inspired A LOT when it comes to the MegaMan franchise, X in particular. Friender basically has the Rush transformations from MvC2 in the series.
I really like how Critical Blow shows the loser of a round gathering their wits and shaking it off if it's not the final round, adds a lot of character.
I have to say, Critical Blow just has some really nice character designs in general. They're simplistic in a good way, some designs are a bit too busy with doodads and details, but these are really clean but still have somehting that just really makes them striking and cool. Even the super basic ones like Bobby and Kei know what they're doing and achieve it well. without sticking a ton of bells and whistles on. Critical Blow's art direction seems to be excellent in general, those great character select pictures, the animated intro, the really nice stages. Also Merkuar rolls you up into a basketball and slamdunks you on the ground for an attack, I think we really need to appreciate that.
That geese looking guy isn't even the final boss of Eye of Typhoon, the final boss is a woman who fights using her chair, who then turns into an Abigail sized guy when you defeat her once
Some translations of Kei Iwase story mode intro via Google translate (so if there are any errors, that's on them ^_^) in case anyone is curious and/or bored: " 'At the P.O.S. [Power of Solid Tournament] two years ago, I was reminded of my own incompetence, and looked over at Chiaki [the brunette chick on the bench], who never got tired of messing with me every day.' " He continued typing silently as usual." [(um... okay)] "One day, a guy named Merkuar [main antagonist of Critical Blow] said he was moved by me and Chiaki's accomplishments two years ago, and strong people from all over the world gathered together and gave him a brooch. "I got an invitation to a game of scramble" (sic [but also WTF?]) "I've been itching to test out the results of my training for the past two years, so this is a perfect test of my skills!" "I'll participate as you wish! Wait for me, master chef!!" (0_o WTF?) So, I guess it's fair to say that Matt already had 95%-ish correct.
Matt McMuscles, I have a few suggestions for fighting games that never left Japan you should play in future videos. Suggestions: Seifuku Densetsu: Pretty Fighter X Astral Superstars Fighters' Impact Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken Daemon Bride: Additional Gain Pretty please, Matt?
48:01 That's Black King Boss, from the OVA and probably the earlier series as well. They literally said his name before the fight started. (Great video, though. Would love to see Kings of Combat on here!)
That's... that's not a little known fact, at all. Battle of the Planets is how a whole generation of people experienced Gatchaman in the late 70's. It was also released as G-Force a few years later in mid-80s; that's how I first discovered it in the UK in the 90s, on VHS tapes my parents randomly bought us to take home from some dodgy market when on holiday/vacation in one of those shithole tourist spots like Benidorm or something... I've still got those tapes somewhere now I think about it...

Eye of the Typhoon is probably the one that I like the most out of this bunch. The moves with the letters and the defeat screen are so cheezy and nostalgic they are amazing!
Didn't see it mentioned yet, but Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle is the unfortunately named prequel to Critical Blow. It must've done alright in Japan though to get this sequel.
Fans of jank know that the best part of Goiken Muyou II is the bus stage. That is, the stage is the narrow roof of a moving bus and most rounds will end in seconds due to just how dead-easy ring-outs are. It often shows up as part of AI Arena in Arcade Pit and was part of the top 8 of the most recent Combo Breaker Mystery Tournament.
I know you don't care one way or the other, but the "Spot with Bison's hat" is Braiking Boss (or Black King Boss if you want to go by the dub)--he is pretty much the inspiration for Sigma, as was most of Casshern being the inspiration for Mega Man X. That is an incredibly shitty sprite of him though, so here's his fight scene from the cool-ass 90s OVA: ua-cam.com/video/AMcmWDYqfP0/v-deo.html
You, weirdly, might get that sometime. 30th anniversary is this year and they are apparently doing a toyline with Fwoosh, probably due to that. So, it's not out of the realm of possibility a game could happen if the interest is there.
Weren't a couple of the characters in SamSho? I think Nicotine from SS2 was from Ninja Scroll (the character design at least), just off the top of my head.
when I hear the name "Critical Blow" I just think back to that SNL sketch for "Colon Bowl" cereal "Critical Blow must be the highest fiber cereal on the market!!"
Tell ya what, man... I'm kinda in love with Critical Blow's art style. Looks like one of those "B tier" NeoGeo games (Breakers, World Heroes, etc) with its' colour palette and overall aesthetic, but rendered in like, Sega Saturn polygons 😍👌
I do have one suggestion for another cancelled fighter Tenth degree Its a 3d anime/japanese inspired game by ATARI surprisingly, i think it ran on similar hardware to the jaguar? It never came out and only got a location test, mame emulates it well enough
Eye of the Typhoon and Critical Blow look fun. I'm sure I would have loved them as a kid. Natasha is a cool big lady, we need more like her in fighting game rosters.
From what little I know of Samurai Pizza Cats, it didn't really stand out in Japan because it was a pretty straight-forward shonen show for the time. The English version, as you probably know, turned out the way it did because translation notes for the Japanese version were either poorly translated or nonexistent (leading to Saban completely rewriting the show as an over-the-top comedy). I think that might be the reason for Samurai Pizza Cats being omitted in these Tatsunoko games.
That's the urban legend, But the real reason is simply that the Japanese right holders simply told Saban to write the show in a way that would appeal to American audiences.
I got to use Ninja Resurrection for a movie report for my high school World Religions class. So at least that anime got me an A. Never heard of Eye of Typhoon, honestly looks like something fun to play around with. *EDIT* Oh yeah, this is the sequel game in the series. The first in the series is called "Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle"
You know I'm actually kinda impressed by that Tlaloc character in Eye of Typhoon. Tlaloc is actually the name of the Aztec god of rain, and his stage contains a lot of direct references to famous art of the precolombian Americas (though not all of it is Aztec, though most are at least from the same region so like better than most attempts). I like it, a lot of fighting games and such that try to go for an indigenous american culture for inspiration do it... less than tastefully, this seems like they at least actually gave half a shit, it comes across as equally hammy as the rest of the cast. In general I'm just pleasantly surprised with that game, I can see why people like it enough to attempt fanmade ports.
Mudo's like a weirdly dedicated but also bad Kenshiro cosplayer. Goes as far as to mimic the seven chest scars but totally fails at the costuming besides that it's blue.
No, it isn't, as the term is used for words that describe non-verbal sounds. It is a noun, not the verbal representation of real-life sounds in itself - it just describes the phenomena
That is kind of the joke that i am making. It's based off of the "The word 'Noun' is itself a noun!" type factoid. The idea that the sound made by phonetically spelling out a sound is the phonetic pronunciation of "Onomatopoeia" is amusing to me. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
@@ray-raypacheco276 it just flew over my head, then. I honestly think written jokes should at least find a way to communicate their humourous intention somehow, and that didn't sound at all like a joke, with no clear punchline or anything of the sort. But you do you! :)
Ah good old DOSBox. I had to figure that out to play Daggerfall a few years back 😅 Amazing how folks can figure that out in their free time in the name of old software preservation. There’s hope yet! Great upload as always Matt!
I've played hundreds and hundreds of fighting games and yet you still manage to show three new ones (I knew about Critical Blow and I think I played Anarchy in the Nippon once). I guess JP only PS1 fighters are a blind spot.
Hey, Matt McMuscles. You should do a playthrough of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Duel. It was released only in Japan for the Super Famicom (SNES). Also, I recommend that you should play the English fan-translated version of the game through an emulator. Heck, it has a banger of a soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Iwatsuki. Pretty please, Matt?
It really seems that Korean video games were the Korean anime of their time. That is, if you ever watched a review of Thunder Kids (or whatever) there's a definite, "We still kinda hate the Japanese so we need to one-up them somehow by being more them when ripping them off"
I think that Roy guy that you were playing as was more like a Terry Bogard rip off from Fatal Fury Special. The old man with his staff sort of ripping off from that short old man from Samurai Showdown 2.

The 3DO was like this weird fever dream of a console that I never had, but knew people here and there that did, so I played it like once or twice when I was literally 5-6 years old. Love the music and animation in Sins

Eye of Typhoon was created by Viccom, the same company behind the mediocre Fight Fever for the NEO GEO.

Tatsunoko Fight just makes me wonder if there was ever a game similar in style based on The Guyver.
Somehow you have sneakily become one of my absolute favorite content creators. Your pure passion for what you do shines through my dude and I love it.
48:01 That's Black King Boss, from the OVA and probably the earlier series as well. They literally said his name before the fight started. (Great video, though. Would love to see Kings of Combat on here!)
He's the Black King from Casshan Robot Hunter
I'm recommending the horrific FIST from Genki/Imagineer, aka the king of kusoge 3D sequel to Pretty Fighter
I get excited when Mcmuscles uploads a new one to three hour compliation. :)
23:21 I'm never going to be able to see the name Bobby in a video game again and not think of this.
Shout out to eye of typhon not being afraid to have a big woman in their game, some game companies are still afraid to do that to this day

Tatsunoko Fight actually has 15 characters, but you have to unlock them and play in arcade mode, not story mode
In Critical Blow if you want more characters and more anime cut scenes go into story mode you will love it.
Wow, that Tatsunoko Fight presentation is top notch, voiced dialog, intros, etc... Very impressive, some recent games don't even have that :D
I was just watching the first. Had no idea this was dropping! Thank you, everyone involved
