Creating a Wrestler is a new UA-cam miniseries on Wrestling Bios that deep dives into wrestlers gimmicks and characters. The first episode features Raven (portrayed by Scott Levy), a character who grew in ECW but also had stints in WCW, WWF / WWE, TNA and ROH.
The video looks at the inspirations for the Raven gimmick (including musical artists / actors / subcultures), some of Raven's key character work (including his growth in ECW, Raven's Nest, Raven's Flock and more), and I also look into some of the biggest moments Raven had in pro wrestling in regards to character establishment and character building.

Raven makes a great first episode for this. He was the best character ECW ever had.

This is wonderful. It baffles me that Raven was left by the wayside in WWF. His character screams attitude era. I would love to see more of these.
Totally Agree.👍 WWF tried a Grunge Gimmick in '95 with "Rad Radford", but he went nowhere. Raven's Attitude would have been perfect for late 90s WWF. They were trying a Rock/Metal gimmick with the Headbangers, but Raven could have "lead" those guys, and had his own faction. He could have called it "The Murder", or something like that. 👍🤘

If it wasn’t created by Vince then the Vince never gave a gimmick a chance
By the time he finally got to WWE, it was 2000 and society was well past grunge.
@@peterashworth8376 It wasnt over for me!😅🤘 But that said mate, the Outcast Rocker look could easily have fit in, perhaps adjusting to the then current metal climate, be it a Slipknot T-Shirt.
If anything, the "Nu Metal" , Post Grunge era of the late 90s/early 00s was pushing the sense of anger and isolation further, so Raven could have evenly flowed alongside that. Leather Jackets n' Jeans never go outta style, so he'd have no issues with that. 👍
I'll stand by this forever: Raven is the most underrated and underused talent of his era. Great mind for the business. He just gets it.
The only other character that was more wasted in WCW was Vampiro. So much potential, so much wasted
I’d love a character retrospective of Doink! I am a huge mark for the original heel Doink played by Matt Bourne. A video about how great that gimmick was (and how they soon wrecked it) would be fantastic.

Thanks to a certain channel recapping the entire the Monday Night Wars, I was able to get a new appreciation for the Raven character.
I remember watching Kanyon tour Raven's home, and Kanyon was befuddled that Raven came from such wealth. What I didn't realize at the time is that Raven "Child of Wealth and Privilege" was always part of his gimmick, at least in WCW
This completely recontextualizes his entire character. Much more a spoiled brat then a social misfit. And more like his parents then Raven might wish to admit when you consider the power he had over the Flock. (more comparable to a corporate businessman and his dutiful Yes Men.)
Yes! That was the best thing Raven did, as far as I was concerned. I knew a dozen guys like him growing up in the suburbs and thought they were all eye-roll worthy.

Yes exactly! Scott was so clever that he linked every single one of his ostensibly diverse characters with a common thread.
The irony was that Raven’s talked about how much he initially disliked those segments since he thought it betrayed his character. He acknowledges how much fans liked it and were convinced that that was his mom in the skit

I loved Ravens title reign and his later stuff with Runt and Abyss, as an Anglo-Saxon history fan he became the embodiment of Eodric Streona in that feud and the one good thing about serotonin was him putting Kaz over. For wrestling moments though, that Slammiversary one was awesome.
This is a great idea! Raven was my favourite wrestler - loved him in the WCW days.

Raven was one of my favorite wrestlers as a kid. It speaks so much on his character that I was barely able to watch WCW where I lived and only knew him from the odd WCW or ECW clips or video game. I was just a kid and barely got to see him and he stuck with me so much that he was one of my faves.
Raven was EVERYTHING to me when I was in highschool. I had a little "Flock" of girls that would follow me around. We wore flannels around our waists, I would crimp my hair all crazy to be like Raven, and we would beat up other girls. Lmiao. Good times. 💜

This is an incredible video & concept series, should you continue with this idea. Raven is one of the greatest characters of all time, conceptually. Scott gave everything he had in him to make his character believable. He is one the cornerstones of the O.G. ECW ( R.I.P. ), & should be given praise for helping to pioneer the revolution of counterculture in pro wrestling in the early 90's. You always have a knack for finding & posting the best clips- love The Melvins, A.I.C, & Nirvana footage!!!
Love Raven, be quality to see an analysis of Kurt Angles character evolution also
Speaking of Kurt; Raven crucifying Sandman is the reason Kurt decided not to sign for ECW (didn't have any issues with Taker doing it to Austin though)
LOVED the video. Raven is my all-time favorite ECW Wrestler. Shame WWE/F didn't utilize him better.

A huge ball drop in my opinion
Here it is. Here's, Scotty was known to read the comics. He wanted to play The Raven for years. Jim even played his neighbour. Me, personally my favorite is Scott vs Mero in WCW. Mero of course, had snapped two weeks before and vowed to never wrestle again. Then Scotty came on the scene. Thing is Scotty was the whole reason Kurt didn't sign with ECW. But when Scotty won the title at SuumerSlam, that's when it all came together.

Please cover Eric Young. The dweeby "salty biscuits" and other guy in team Canada evolving to the maniacal heel he became was incredible character building.

I remember the heel turn series having 40 plus comments asking for Roodes beer bottle or Bullys aces n 8s turn and he no sold them 😂 horses for courses hey! Maybe do some coverage of them myself if I ever get the time/develop to anywhere near as good as WB

Randy Savage would be a great first episode. I actually watched a documentary about the man who designed his gear. Guy used to make clothes for Jimi Hendrix and such too. It’s an interesting doc.

Hell yeah dude, great idea for a series. One character I think could get a lot more attention is the Glacier character that debuted in WCW in the late 90's.
I don't know if you've heard of this wrestler, but I thought his origins and overall place in the ongoing lore as it pertained to wrestling was fascinating and you should give it a look. Underrated, if you ask me.

One of the few good things that came out of ecw. Loved his "long haired skirt wearing freak" promo and feud with establishment Larry Z in tna

This was great,prefer these to the computer game videos,you missed out his run with Abyss.More of these type of videos reminds me of the good old biography videos you used to do!!!

Raven was the sole individual that got me into wrestling. It was when he attacked DDP on TRL. It peaqued my interest and I was hooked from there. Totally underappreciated worker and his ability to reinvent himself is second only to Jericho imo.
Jericho from inception to present would make for a fascinating character study, though tbf after about 2015-6 he does become rather insufferable and repetitive to watch. His work with Stephanie McMahon is something unusual and noteworthy in terms of wider wrestling history.

This reminds me that we don't have gimmicks anymore. We have "personas" that change year to year, even month to month, that completely changes how someone acts for no reason and it comes off as phony. Good idea for a series. I look forward to seeing what you can do with it.
Love this concept and Raven was the ideal starting - would be interested in seeing a dive into the Umaga character and gimmick, as well as The Pope from TNA
Raven is the perfect character to start this series with. Raven needs to go into The WWE hall of fame. I know Vince isn't a fan but Raven's character is one of the best in the history of pro wrestling.
He still holding a grudge against Raven for his partying days with Shane
Not happening Vince still holds a grudge towards Raven and I'm pretty sure Triple H and Stephanie are going to keep him out too
The reason why Vince doesn’t like or “doesn’t get” the Raven character is he didn’t create him. Most big stars Vince didn’t create he tends to dismiss.

Huge fan of Raven - his feud with CM Punk across ROH and other indies got me back into pro-wrestling in my teens.

Jimmy Jacobs bio when🙏🙏🙏🙏his character changes and gimmicks across the indies is something to behold. His work in TNA, ROH and CHIKARA in particular are Emmy-worthy.
Absolutely love the video essay format. You could also do videos about the evolution of wrestler archetypes (foreign heel, Cowboy, etc.) Or even match types in general (the early TLC matches vs modern, etc.) Keep up the good work.

Well to be honest I loved it!!!!!😊 It was a very interesting 🤔 and would love to see more character arcs such as how Dustin Rhodes was the natural only to change into goldust in the WWF and onto Black Rain in TNA....

One of the few gimmicks to this day that I can relate with , due to my history of mental health and depression, Raven and the character always intrigued me all my life.

Imagine if he was the stalker instead of DDP against the undertaker in 2001
That would've been perfect. No explanation would be needed. The banter back and forth would be excellent. Maybe even have the "druids" come down to ringside during a PPV, and when Undertaker is about to win a match against Raven, they get in the ring and attack him. Then have them take the robes off, and it's the start of a new "Flock". I'm an Undertaker fan through and through, but that would've blown my mind. It's the type of thing Raven would do as well. That would've cemented Raven's spot in WWF/E for sure. One can only dream though.

I like this idea of exploring a specific gimmick or character instead of a career retrospective. This presentation is okay. I think you'll refine it more if you keep doing it, like with your other video series. Not sure I like the title "Creating A Wrestler" because it sounds like some video game mode, but whatever.
As for a gimmick or character suggestion, The Hurricane or Abyss.
