Yeah they dropped the ball. They should’ve kept him as a deranged, film obsessed, androgynous supervillain. He could’ve main evented. He should’ve squashed Jannetty and drug him to the back. Then they run promos the next week where he stages a film torturing Jannety and showing how diabolical and dangerous he was that he could hang with the Takers, Michaels and Hitmans. He didn’t even have to win against the top faces. He could’ve taken pleasure in just hurting the babyfaces and those they care about.

I always got the impression that Dustin is fairly introverted in real life, stoic, soft-spoken, and that's why he never really set the world on fire under his own name. But you put the makeup on him and it brings this whole other side of his personality to the surface.

The “outrageous John Waters character,” and the shock of him being Dusty’s son, is right on the money and a huge part of the appeal in my friends group back then, which did consist of a bunch of semi-closeted guys and girls (it was the 90s and barely anyone came out in high school back then but some were out within the safety of our social circle etc, like me.)

Dustin was more than capable of putting on a fast paced match, but his first match was an excellent display of ring psychology. His matches always delivered something unexpected.

Im pretty sure OP means that the worldview narrative of pushing LGBTQ to the forefront of EVERYTHING these days has overtaken what most people consider “normal” .. so Goldust nowadays would not be shocking by any means - it’s been so normalised to be androgynous with Gen Z these days that people would be more shocked and a character that was more traditionally masculine and traditional would bring as much heat as Goldust did in the 90’s. I completely agree. Twitter would have a meltdown.

I think he was about 15 years ahead of his time tbh. Dusty as a wrestler is and always will be one of the best character wrestlers.
