  • On this dive, my beautiful wife and I head out to Lake Natoma to try and help someone who lost their phone and paddle while enjoying her day out on the lake! While searching, I actually had other divers come over and offer to help me find whatever I was looking for! I said that would be awesome and more eyes the merrier! After about an hour and a half of scanning the bottom of the lake, one of the other divers were able to find the paddle that she lost. I immediately went up to the surface and had Natasha move the boat and anchor to give us a better focal point for our search! However, to my surprise, the phone was no where in the immediate vicinity.
I started thinking this might be one of those rare times when the phone didn't shoot straight down and instead caught current and drifted down a ways before hitting the bottom. So I start at where one of the other divers found the paddle and let the current start taking me. After several more pieces of trash, I FINALLY FOUND IT! When I got to the surface, Tanya couldn't believe what she was looking at.
I told her to make sure it's completely dry before putting power to it, and then I changed out my tank for a fresh one since I was almost out of air and got back to treasure hunting! I found some cool things, like a golf cart crock top thing, some sunglasses, and fishing lures, but the coolest find was definitely something I thought was a rock and ended up being a phone that was covered completely in silt. The phone was in a dry case but I could still see that the screen had visible damage on it. I took the phone home, made sure it was completely dry, and then plugged it in and it fired right up! I ended up being able to get a hold of the owner and they were absolutely baffled how I had their phone that ended up in the lake over 3 YEARS AGO! That's when I explained what I did and it made a little bit more sense.
A couple weeks later, the man and his child, that was the screen saver of the phone, came to pick it up and get a tour of the treasure room! I couldn't be happier that I was not only able to return 1 but 2 phones back to their rightful owners from this dive!
Thank you so much to everyone who shared the post and tried to help find him. Also, a huge thank you to the other divers that stopped and donated their time to help a complete stranger!
