My 2¢ - I think when they're saying "keep your body flat", they're meaning don't bend your head and/or your upper body upwards to get it out of the water more to breathe. Looking at the person swimming, you clearly see that they're rotating their upper body with the stroke, but they're keeping their head & body straight, IE parallel to the water/ground.
I used to bend my head and body upwards towards the sky when I breathed. My instructor said the same thing the video said, keep your body in a straight and then she mentioned what I was doing. Made much more sense.
A trick I learned in swim team: In order to regulate exhalation, hum as you breathe out through your nose. Engaging your vocal chords acts as a valve and you can regulate the amount you breathe out by how loudly or softly you hum.
Yup. Same here. Though I hum the "battle speed" cadence from Ben Hur to also control my stroke speed!! :-)
Ramakrishna Prasad Definitely going to try that! thanks!
I do that always...it makes me comfortable
I just hum l never knew it was a technique
I think the commentary in this video is one of the best examples of how every human body behaves and functions differently. About 75% of swim coaches tell you to rotate your body while this video says to keep it "as flat as possible". There's also a lot of debate about breathing slowly underwater as this video suggests or forcefully exhaling all the air as soon as your head re-enters the water and finishing exhaling before your next breath. Practice different techniques and do what works for you best. Bilateral breathing every 3 strokes for me was one of the best techniques I learned because it helped me swim more straight, yet my brother can still swim faster than me breathing on the same side.
Tormund Giantsbane I’m sorry about Mance Raydar.
Thanks Tormund
great explanation of how to breath efficiently. i am training for becoming a californian lifeguard and watching these videos keeps my technique in shape! keep these awesome vids coming :)
Thanks speedo. I tried this technique and it worked for me. My rotation isn't as flat as shown on video but look forward finding a more comfortable position to do so.
Thana for this! I will try this at my next practice! 😊
I NEEDED THIS
excellent swimming!
Very good love speedo swimming products
Knowing how to breathe is the key to distance swimming and distance running! When I was younger, I’d swim 4-5 hours nonstop. Total relaxation!! Same with running 14-16 miles . And of course marathons.
Awesome videos!
DO NOT "...aim to keep your body as flat as possible" as stated in the video. Freestyle is a rotational stroke. Flat swimmers are slow swimmers. Rotation adds to streamlining. Weird that Speedo authorized this video.
I'm trying to improve my freestyle stroke and watched other videos and they all spoke about increased rotation being helpful so I thought it was strange that they said this. Even stranger was the fact that the swimmer contracted their advice because we clearly had deep rotations.
I think they mean to not over-rotate onto your back while breathing...?
i think its just cuz the vid was released in 2013 so i dont think rotations were that important back then
They don't know what they're talking about.
There may be a slight rotation but most beginners overdo it and therefore stall their speed and break their float so it's important to not exaggerate the rotation and not look up but to your side
this dude makes swimming an easy thing.
excellent video
thanks
very nice, excellent i liked swimming 🏊🏊
so usefull videos thnaks for sharing
Can you guys please make videos like this for Flip turning and Starts? :))
Thank you/
I could not help but to laugh at those ''fins'' at 1:27
I really like the intro music :D
I'm having troubles with the inhales. Every time i watch someone it seems like it takes them ½-1 second to do the inhale. For me i need like 2-3 second to get a full inhale or it feels like i'm not gotten enough air in to keep swimming. Any suggestions? Also swallowing water seems to a problem for me as well :P
A common mistake is to use wrong muscles when breathing. Try to only breathe with the diaphragm instead and you will probably do a lot better.
Emil Kaminski That happened to me in the beginning but went away as I got fitter. Practice running without breathing so often. I also learned to control the amount of water swallowed, and how to spit it out while underwater.
Make sure you exhale completely under water, so you don't both exhale and inhale after your mouth exited the water
You must not swallow water.
Which brand and model are his goggles? Thanks.
Im tryin to learn how to swim help
I can only do 2 strokes like this..after that the head pops up automatically to take in more air or to exhale..
who is the swimmer ?
Should we breathe on both sides ?
This id really gonna help me.
is
Breathing under the arm is contrary to the latest concepts of keeping the two arms moving opposite and balanced. The breath would be while the arm is finishing and alongside the body. The “late” breathing technique demonstrated here can lead to shoulder issues.
👌🏻👌🏻
Your body should rotate as you breathe!! Not keep it flat!
i keep drinking water from that what did i do wrong?
I can't get enough oxygen when I come up to breathe and then I get exhausted...Any tips?
I think you are holding too much your breath, try to breathe every two strokes.
+Josué Moreno thanks :)
Bring a oxygen tank.
For all of you that say you're drowning while trying this technique, hum and you'll feel bubbles coming out from your nose. When you turn to the side do the same but intake air through your mouth (:
When I inhale, I tend to swallow in some water. Any suggestions?
Calm LivePono don't swallow the water
Is it wrong if you breath on every 3d stroke, instead of on every 2nd? I see every pro doing it every 2nd stroke, but every 3d is what I learned.
PanagosGr33kG134EVERwhat ever feels comfortable but in a usualy 50 metre race u limited breathe
breathe out through mouth or nose?
mouth
i would say nose. as my head turns sideways, if i don't breathe out through my nose, water starts getting in.
NOSE. Always exhale through the nose.
Try to keep your eye level even lower
quay lai de lam gi
Its difficult to head up to breath while freestyle or doggy paddle.
Help!
When im swimming i get water up my nose and when i go to breath through my mouth, the water in my nose goes to the back of my throat and i end up breathing it in.
buy a nose clip
Its because you arent breathing out while you swim, and youre holding your breath. If you exhale while your head is under then itll be physically impossible to get water into it. Nose clips create bad habits that you have to break later, i'd recommend you learn it properly now
Should v inhale from mouth o nose
i usually hold my breath then let go and do it again.
I can only breathe on the right. How do I become an ambibreather? :(
practice counting your strokes and breathing after odd strokes, it might be uncomfortable at first but work at it.
Thank you *****
is he exhaling through his nose?
Yes inhale through your mouth exhale to your nose
But I still don't understand! How can you breathe out when you are still underwater?! The water itself will rush to both your nostrils, and your mouth even if you do exhale underwater....
😒
Takeru9292 try to lie on stomach in water with your eyes looking down and exhale. Water may enter your nose, but as long as your keep your head correctly it will not get in too deep, and remember never inhale through nose while your swim.
Takeru9292 Try to prolong your exhale so that you are exhaling the whole time while your nose and mouth are underwater. That way, the air is constantly pushing water out and the water won't get in your nostrils and mouth.
The air you're blowing out will prevent this.
While swimming,
Inhale through mouth
Exhale through mouth/nose
Exhaling inside water not working :(
+arjunesh namboothiri Practice at the side of the pool or in your bathtub. Place your face in the water and hum softly through your nose. Using your nose to breathe out insures that no water will go up your nose and it's the most efficient method for exhaling in water. The main thing is to practice, practice, practice. It feels strange at first, but if you practice, you will succeed. Good luck!
+Leananshae yes leanan. Will practice hard.I was breathing out through mouth.Let me try with nose. What about breath in,through nose or mouth?
arjunesh namboothiri Breathe in with your mouth. Good luck and keep trying!
+arjunesh namboothiri tried humming but i swallowed like gallons of water
2013danrazor
Don't open your mouth and definitely don't try to inhale underwater. If you hum softly and steadily, the stream of bubbles will make it impossible for water to enter your nose. Keep trying. It'll work if you just don't give up.
mouth
"Try to keep your body streight"....Uh then why is he rolling like a chicken on the grill???? Man these videos are the resume of all the possible mistakes you can do while learning to swim!
wtf
Aim to keep as flat as possible?! This is completely wrong. Modern swimming is about rotation and engaging the large muscles...the core. This video should be marked as obsolete.
0:41 These are the worst videos on swimming. Do NOT aim to swim flat. Always on a knife edge, with quick rotation to the other side, spending as little time as possible, flat.
