Hi Everybody, How is the idle on your 3.2 Carrera? Actually, this process applies to most cars - just follow the service manual and get to know all the players. The vacuum gauge I used is this guy: goo.gl/xtoi9r and can be used for low positive pressure for carburetor fuel systems like maybe a 356 or VW beetle ;) If you have idle problems across the temp range, the service manual will walk you through each of the possibilities. Test them before just replacing. The Temperature sensor on my car reads as an open circuit (SB 90-6.8KOhm depending on temp), but is working just fine. If I pull that plug while the car is running the idle will start to surge badly. Replacing the position, speed and temp sensors isn't too bad, but is a bit cramped and fiddly. Let me know if you have questions. ...list of parts and tools in the description. Thanks! Franny
I have a Porsche with same engine. Mileage is only about 50000 km. Now I am trying to fix all problems due to long non operating period. All your very professional videos helped me a lot.
Thank you so much for posting this video. It was extremely helpful in identifying my vacuum leak on my 3.2. My vacuum leak came from two cracked vacuum lines. Posting this in case somebody has the same problem and is doing endless research like I did ... The car started and immediately stalled endlessly... fixed the cracks and idols as smooth as glass now. I wish the both of you 100 years of good luck !!!! Keep up the good work.
Franny... I don’t even know it this lesson will help Me with my surging 3.2, but I thank-you ten-fold already for showing Me the how-to. I look forward to tackling this task with confidence very soon! Keep up the great videos!! 👍🏼
I wished we had such good Porsche technicians and such wonderful weather in Germany. Many thanks for so many interesting videos in 2017 and Merry Christmas to enchanting Heidi & Franny‘s Garage!
brand new 89 carrera owner that is searching daily for helpful easy to understand lessons. This on that i happened upon is amazing and so informative. Thanks again
This video saved me. Had out of control idle and went through the steps and one of the my coolant hoses was knocking the temperature sensors loose when I shut the engine hood. Problem solved!
@@HeidiandFranny I replaced a good portion of the braided original vacuum lines with auto store rubber. I made my own step down rubber connector for the hard vacuum line that goes over the top of the motor. Looks like you have original braided vacuum lines on your 3.2 Carrera. I also found that the fuel regulator and damper had gone dead and were full of rotten fuel on my '84. The new regulators ring like a bell and the old ones just clunk when you hit it with a wrench.i also sent out the fuel lines to Zim's to be rebuilt with new rubber. If I had a hose crimp collar machine I would do it myself. There are plastic springs that cover the fuel lines so they don't rub and cause an engine fire and I reused them! Turns out I had a hollowed out cat that was basically a straight pipe. It caused a little overrun and would barely not pass CA emissions. Got a like new OEM cat from ebay. Now my clutch won't separate and adjusting it with feeler gauges worked for a day but I had to drive it home in second. My new to me Arena Red '97 2.5 Boxster has 82k miles and a hard top. The used price was unbelievably low! It doesn't produce much torque under 4000 rpm but feels a lot lighter on its toes than later cars. Lots of DIY fun to be had -no pricey German specialist shops for me.
Amazing video, the best detailed mechanical explanations that I saw until now. Next week I'll try to clean the idle valve, thank you! Keep that good work!
It's the pearl necklace that always gets me. And the immaculate clothes after digging around the engine compartment. I have a Prius, no ambition to own a Porsche, yet I watch the whole thing like another episode of Downton Abbey, with all kinds of unexpected plot twists. :)
And I almost forgot my pearls on the way out to the garage ;) So happy to hear you enjoyed the story :) I really want to make these entertaining and shoot it with movement. The absolute holy grail would be a three act narrative. That is so awesome to hear! Thanks! Franny
Nice work repairing this Porsche. This air cooled model sounds so nice when its running well, and everything on this engine looks so clean. Love your videos! Thanks!
this was seriously very good video. you picked a problem, show all the parameters that may go wrong with good explanation & diagram... nicely done. thank you for the upload.
Another great DIY video as always very through with added graphs & extra pics, really appreciate clear camera work showing exactly what your talking about👍 Others needed to take notes. Oh, cleaned this valve really helped on smoother idling, wish I had this video back then because you gave a lot more incite to the situation.
Thanks Glenn! That was really weird to try and photograph. The camera makes it look like you could take a nap back there but it is really so tight I had to pull that heater booster fan to get access. Watch those hard lines... Those little boogers really like to work their way out.
First, I wanted to thank you for your You Tube videos. I love watching them even though I know next to nothing about auto repair. It's still very interesting (and I might be learning a tiny bit). We live here in Denver in the Cherry Creek area and hope to actually meet you both someday. We just took delivery of a brand new Porsche a week ago (2019 911 Turbo S Cab), and while we know (?) you don't work on any of the newer cars, if you ever have an interest in test driving a new Cab, we'll be happy to bring it by your house at a convenient time. Seeing as we live kind of in the center of Denver, you are probably not more than 45 minutes away from us. This is actually our tenth Porsche over the last 35 years....we love them, obviously. Currently, our other car is a 2014 Cayenne Turbo S. Mainly I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos and say thanks. Hope to bump into you someday. John & Penny Tober, jtober@gmail.com.
After watching all of your videos, I’m always amazed at just how thorough you are when diagnosing different issues. You definitely get a thumbs up from me! Best wishes to you and Heidi for a wonderful holiday season!
Cool video. I'm having the same problem with my 944 (1986, non turbo). Rough start real trouble idling just to remain on. Now it actually shuts off. After 2, 3 minutes, idles easier and drives well. Will check each of these things. Thanks.
Thanks for the great video: one advantage of Porsche sharing parts is that I could also use this for my 944 with bad idle. Same symptoms and cleaning the valve gave the same the same perfect results.
I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the EGT sensor. A subtly malfunctioning resistor in the sensor (aka NTC thermistor) can cause all kinds of mixture issues. The sensor's resistance goes down as temperature goes up. The EGT sensor is absolutely fundamental in all Bosch Motronic systems, including cold start. The ECM will use its data to lengthen fuel injector pulse width over basic-pulse time if additional enrichment is needed, say at cold start. It should not be reading infinity/open resistance. A normal reading is about 2-3k ohms at 70°F and 250-400 ohms at 176°F. Love your videos and great job, but just adding some additional info here.
Great video, good information for folks wanting to troubleshoot themselves. Idle air control valve is always my first check with any idle issues. Easy to get to and easy to clean if needed.
The idle of old aircooled 911 engines ALWAYS varies a little bit up and down - cold or warm. This is normal and no problem as long as the engine does not stop. I even like it, for me it is a part of the 911 fascination, the engine "lives" !
Thumbs up! Reminds me of my first car (BMW E30 318i Touring) that was idling roughly. Turned out to be a vacuum hose that was cracked. Your 3.2 Carrera sounds wonderful. I love the sound of an air cooled flat 6!
I've never been a fan of all those loose hoses everywhere. And they are Christmas tree lights - it only takes a split in one place. You should see the Turbo ;) Yeah, that flat air-cooled six is one of the best sounds out there!
Thank you for letting me know the idle culprit. Mine is 964, and having same issue. 🤔😂 Anyways, your meticulous air cooled vlog clip is really impressive!
Great video, Franny. Thanks. My 3.2 has been rough idle on cold so I will try cleaning the idle valve like you did and see if that helps. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! Good luck on your quest. The left fuel pressure regulator vacuum line came off a few times on our car... Just use the braille method and see if you can feel any open lines... Let me know how it goes! Franny
Hi Franny! You are a real expert! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. How did you get all this massive knowledge about these technical things? :-) It's amazing!! 8-)
By owing cars that didn't run well I suppose ;) Just out of necessity. I didn't want to break down and if I did, I didn't want to be that vulnerable for long ;)
Hey guys, can you detail the procedure on the cleaning of the Idle Control Valve? What exactly do you do, and how do you prevent damaging it in the process? Anything to watch out for?
Really pretty straight forward... I used some standard carburetor cleaner spray and a paint brush and a few Q-Tips... It appears to be fairly robust. Just make sure you perform the electrical test afterwards... Mine was still a bit stuck. I would not dunk it however... You don't want to get the electrical bit wet. Afterwards, just blow out with compressed air...
Great video! I recently purchased an 85 3.2 and need help diagnosing some idle issues, as well as identifying specific parts. The service manual you speak of at the end of the video, is it the Bentley Publishing Service manual for 911's of that generation? Thanks.
Excellent video, as always. My 1984 3.2 Carrera idles fine when dead cold, but stalls during acceleration when I get on the road. Once the car warms up (after 4-5 stalls and starts), it drives perfectly fine. RPMs drop when I remove oil filler cap, so vacuum seems OK. I suspect it may be the cylinder head temp sensor (esp. since mechanic report from 2015 (before I owned it) states that the sensor was "borderline"). Could a failing temp sensor cause the condition described above? Thanks!!!
The car will surge once when cold, but not hot. It could be the temp sensor in the front of cylinder #3. I would run the diagnostics procedure in the service manual and see if you can localize a bad component. Also be sure you don't have a vacuum leak.
Hi Franny, great video with very clear Information, do you use a particular service manual and if so which one? Just subscribed and about to watch all your videos keep up the great work. 👍
Hi Ian, I use the standard Porsche shop manual and also the Bentley repair manual. They work really well together and they both have lots of information. Anything else and I hit the internet for anecdotal info. Thanks so much! Franny
Hi Franny, another great video! I did notice that the top hose on the idle control valve towards the back had none adjustable hose clamps are loose hence why it came off, that could be another air leak on high RPM, you may want to check that. Thanks.
Franny, this is a very helpful video. I used it to diagnose the surging idle in my 85’ 3.2 coupe; in part the broken connection for the cylinder head temperature sensor being the culprit. Presently im stuck with this slightly thicker green wire coming from the dme side which is without a jacket or connector, it’s bare. I suspect it’s the oxygen sensor wire that’s missing it’s connector. I can see your oxygen sensor connected under the temperature sensor wire at 16:22. What are your thoughts? Also, in the video at 16:22, under the reference mark sensor, there is a green connector with black jacket and brown covering; what is this connector for? I don’t see any knock sensor mounted on my car. Would really appreciate your insights!
:) I do wonder what would happen if you took a 30yr old car to a service center that work on mainly new cars... I wonder if you would get someone a bit green who is reading through a service manual... for the first time...
My car isn't 30 years old, but taking my 15 year old C4S to Oslo Porsche Center, I met very competent mechanics. The guy working on mine was a German guy with more than 20 years of experience, who swapped out my old IMS, and replaced it with an IMS Solution from LN engineering, no questions, he had the special tools required, had done it before, and also gave me a quick run down on other things to look after on my car. AWESOME... OPC works on all 911's dating back to -64 no problems whatsoever. Your tips and tricks comes in handy though, as a visit to a certified Porsche Center is costly, and if it's little things like this you can DIY, it's worth getting your hands dirty...
I watch your videos and now do a lot of work myself. Very helpful!!!Would you happen to know where I can get the correct welting for my 1985 911. I am missing welting, I’ll try to describe where it’s located: driver side, the square-ish “cover” that sits against the bellow , between the bellow and the wheel well above the valance, the bellow actually tucks under this “cover”. This cover should have welting on the top and bottom. I’m missing the lower welting. I don’t know where to find a small piece to purchase.. and the correct one. Any ideas? Thanks so much.
I would search Pelican or Sierra Madre. It might be worth a call to see if you can describe it or look for it in the parts catalogue and then do a web search on the part number. Let me know if you come up empty.
My exactly same year same problem same color, cost me a second fuel pump replace check everything like you in this video but the problem is the fuel filter,
Hi There, if the fuel filter helped, you might want to consider draining the tank and cleaning the strainer in the bottom (big huge plug at the bottom of the tank) Ours was broken and there was a good amount of debris in there. If your fuel pump is whining, then it can't get fuel and your tank is probably clogged...
My 87 3.2 idled very poorly. Especially if you revved it a little, and let off. It would want to stall. I installed a Steve Wong chip, and now it idles perfectly, and runs better at all rpm ranges. It just rips now.
Welcome to the channel! I don't think unplugging the battery will matter... With the key off the Motronic is pretty dead... The quickest way to tell if that by-pass valve is even alive is to turn the ignition on but don't start the car. Then go back and put your hand on that valve. You should feel it vibrating. If not, then pull it and bench test it like I show in the video. Clean and re-try. If still no good then it is either wiring or the ECU. Let me know how it goes. Franny
Thanks for the advice! It ended up being a bad ignition coil wire which “cooked” the ignition coil. After replacing the two, my car is pulling strong again! 🏎️
Good Morning Franny & Heidi Now that I have the top latch fixed, it's on to the idle issue. The car starts fine when it's cold, occasionally it can take a try or two to keep running, however it does seem to run well when cold. The car idles around 850-900 RPMS when cold and during warmup driving, but once fully warmed up it climbs to between 1000 & 1100 RPMS. I have not checked the ACV for cleanliness yet. Is there a way to lower the idle at running temp without messing up the cold idle. I remember seeing one of your videos where you are adjusting the idle, but for the life of me I can't find it. Thanks Again my car is a 1991 C2 J Cat.
@@HeidiandFranny Hi Heidi & Franny. Still dealing with hopefully the last of two issues with my 1991 / 964 cab. The idle is still sitting at around 1000-1100 RPM when fully warmed up. My buddy has the car at his Ferrari shop and is trying to trouble shoot the idle. He is going to first try the ACV.. Any other suggestions of lowering the idle. Also the airbag and seat belt lights are illumined. Still trying to figure that out as well. I was referred to a Porsche specialist that has a tester called a "hammer" ? sounds rough. Any suggestions. Thanks. JC
Another great tutorial. Question; regarding 1986 911 When I down shift to 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear I hear a popping sound from exhaust. Not always and seems only at higher speeds. What’s going on?
You may have an exhaust leak somewhere... Look for some black soot where it shouldn't be... If not that, then you are running rich. The mixture on these cars should be set with a gas analyzer. Sometimes people back in the car's history didn't get things adjusted correctly. Also possible you have a cylinder not firing and dumping gas into the exhaust system. Your cat would be running very hot if that was the case. An IR thermometer would help determine that...
I would love to help you work on your Porsches! I would learn so much as I have from your videos! ps - if you ever need someone to wash them..... lol =)
I have a 3.2 Carrera that fast idles correctly when the engine is cold. Once it warms up it idles around 850 rpm then slowly starts to drift down to about 700 rpm. It then immediately revs up to about 850 for a short time then drifts back down. It repeats this cycle as long as the car is idling. Sometimes it will shutoff when idling. No problem when driving. Just at idle. Any ideas on how to solve this?
Hi Billy, start by looking for vacuum leaks. While the engine is idling, remove the oil fill cap. You should hear the idle drop (or, at least change). If not, check the gasket in the cap. Try a dab of silicone grease on it. If that helps, replace the gasket. If no change at all, look for some of those vacuum lines behind the throttle body and leading out to each cylinder bank. If still nothing, use that cheap vacuum gauge I have in the video. If not vacuum, and you are sure the bypass is functioning properly, Check the air filter, anything obstructing the intake. How does the engine run off idle? smooth and responsive? If not, maybe check plugs and wires. There are also other sensors (those three connectors on the vertical bracket on the left). Crank, temp, etc... You could be losing one of those sensors or have a bad connection... F
@@HeidiandFranny Thanks for the response. The car runs fine except when idling after it has warmed up. I will go through each of the steps that you took in your video.
I would benefit greatly by cleaning and detailing my engine bay and undercarriage. I wouldn't get so dirty working on my truck. It's pretty dirty and I haven't completely cleaned it up after changing the valve cover gasket that was leaking oil. I have a thick sheen of oil and dirt all over the drivers side suspension.
It is always easier to determine what is going on when you have a clean car, inside and out. If there is a leak where it shouldn't be, then it is easier to find.
When my car gets hot on a drive and i turn the engine off and on the odd occasion it wont start or turn over i just hear a clunk when i turn the key and like a buzzing or humming sound.? It only does it when its hot. Is that a faulty starter motor? or is there a senor which might be faulty and preventing the start?
Hi Amanda, Looks like you also have a 3.2 Carrera? Hmmm... Sounds like the starter is getting stuck when hot. Could be it needs to be replaced. I did find this article on Pelican: www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_starter_install/911_starter_install.htm Be sure your battery is good first and the alternating is charging properly. I use that SOLAR battery tester, but most auto parts stores will do a complete check for free. At least you can then rule that out. Next, check all the electrical connections for corrosion from the battery and also at the starter. If all that checks out then you may need to replace that starter. Franny
Yes its a 3.2 Franny i will have a look around in there. The battery should be o.k its hooked up to a trickle charge because i dont drive it much. Thanks for the help l love your DIY tips its a must for me to learn about this car and do as much as i can myself im nervous every time i think of taking it to even the best workshops.. last time i sent it away i went in with oil and i got it back with none showing on the dip stick ..!
unfortunately not... The SC uses a version of the Bosch K Jet-Tronic mechanical fuel injection (similar to the Ferrari 308). But, there is a common issue where the SC idle will surge up and down. I've heard this can be as simple as a blown fuse. Poke around online and see what you can find... Franny
All the time or just at startup? Startup is normal (if it's been sitting for a bit). Otherwise if you have a bit of white (or blue-ish) smoke after startup it could be a bad turbo or, more likely, a bad valve seal. The turbo will happen most under load.

Thanks!!!
Mine just surge for a minute when the engine is restated after running. E.g. stopped to fill gas, it would surge but goes away.
Any suggestions?
The car will surge once when cold, but not hot. It could be the temp sensor in the front of cylinder #3. I would run the diagnostics procedure in the service manual and see if you can localize a bad component. Also be sure you don't have a vacuum leak.
Thanks for your suggestion. I will let you know.
Your videos should be required watching at the Porsche mechanics school...
I am missing welting, I’ll try to describe where it’s located:
driver side, the square-ish “cover” that sits against the bellow , between the bellow and the wheel well above the valance, the bellow actually tucks under this “cover”.
Nice clear explanation .
Thanks!
Ah, now I get it, I need to wear a pearl necklace when I work on my engine :)
Damn nice video , I learned again from this. Thanks and please keep posting these kind of videos !
Thanks!
Good job, Franny! Chuck
Thank you!
Nailed it!
My 87 3.2 idled very poorly. Especially if you revved it a little, and let off. It would want to stall. I installed a Steve Wong chip, and now it idles perfectly, and runs better at all rpm ranges. It just rips now.
We want to put that in ours. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Franny. Any ideas on hesitation at low speed 30 mph on a 1989 3.2
Did you have to unplug your battery before unplugging the valve sensor? I think my 85 911 might be experiencing these cold idle issues.
Good Morning Franny & Heidi
Now that I have the top latch fixed, it's on to the idle issue.
Thanks
Again my car is a 1991 C2
J Cat.
Which car? Was it our 3.2? One of our more recent videos after reinstalling our engine.
@@HeidiandFranny
Hi Heidi & Franny.
Thanks.
JC
@@johnc1486 if you can get to a Porsche specialist, he might have a hammer. They are super rare and will definitely help. Also check for vacuum leaks.
Nice video, tks to share knowledge
Thanks! F
Another great tutorial.
Question; regarding 1986 911
When I down shift to 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear I hear a popping sound from exhaust.
Heidi and Franny's Garage thank you very much
Idle air valve? Greasy Fingers has a grt video on that part!
Love you! thanks for all info - save me a much of $$$
I would love to help you work on your Porsches! I would learn so much as I have from your videos!
ps - if you ever need someone to wash them..... lol =)
Interesting stuff, ta
Thanks!
I did find this article on Pelican: www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_starter_install/911_starter_install.htm
Be sure your battery is good first and the alternating is charging properly.
Same procedure applies to SC?
unfortunately not... The SC uses a version of the Bosch K Jet-Tronic mechanical fuel injection (similar to the Ferrari 308). But, there is a common issue where the SC idle will surge up and down. I've heard this can be as simple as a blown fuse. Poke around online and see what you can find... Franny
Ok good job! Now take on a 928 ;)
I don't see 928s too often... But you never know... Maybe someone will bring one by :)
I’ll ask around and send them your way ;)

930 engine white smoke coming halp
All the time or just at startup? Startup is normal (if it's been sitting for a bit). Otherwise if you have a bit of white (or blue-ish) smoke after startup it could be a bad turbo or, more likely, a bad valve seal. The turbo will happen most under load.
Just great. Thank you for perfect information!!!
