    I can't tell you how helpful this was. I'm very claustrophobic and have a specific fear of MRIs, and seeing how it all works has helped my anxiety a whole lot. Thank you for posting this and for explaining the process.

    I had an MRI scan today for my neck, upper, and, lower back. It was the horrible experience of my life. I am mildly claustrophobic but I got panicked as soon as they put me in that machine. I had a headcover on, plus neck restraints. and due to neck restraints, I couldn't put the headphones in. So no music to distract me. I was instructed not to move for at least 45 mins. I felt like I am caged in. My anxiety went through the roof. The radiographer was a nice man who quickly brought me back outside the machine. I felt so dizzy and disoriented after that. It took me half an hr to catch my breath and be normal again. I was then told to go for an open MRI which might help me with my issue.

      Omg , I was just reading your comment and I’m already dizzy ! I’m so claustrophobic that’s not even funny. I can’t stay in dark too. For 5 sec or else I’ll start screaming. I’m due to do this test as well and idk if I will survive it to be honest. I don’t think this is for me. Thank you for your honesty , now I know what’s to be expected 🥴🤢

      The one I was in was much tighter than the one in the video. When I opened my eyes it was right in front of my face, like an inch. I was trapped in a super tight space I couldn't get out of and my heart started racing and pounding so hard. I started squeezing the ball about 30 seconds after they put me in. I heard the tech on the earphones ask if I was ok. I yelled "NO NO, GET ME OUT!" LOL. Now I have to go back under anesthesia. The one in the video is wider and has more space between her face and the machine.

    • @rupowell2821
      @rupowell2821 2 роки тому +9

      It’s so hard to believe that there isn’t a preparation phase on these machines for patients. They just throw everybody in there as if it’s fine for everyone when clearly it isn’t. Why do they waste time and money for folks just to squeeze the ball..the patient should be asked clearly when referred for mri, ‘are you afraid of tight spaces?’ And if the answer is ‘yes’ then the patient should be referred to some other treatment. I had just received a very tough pituitary surgery when 2 days after the procedure they brought me down for an MRI, I was finding it hard to breath through my nose after the surgery then they put the box thing on my head, a completely harrowing and useless waste of time as I obviously pressed the ball thing..it just shows you that mental health and personal wellbeing isn’t considered here and a lot of money is being wasted when a simple discussion before hand would probably go a long way…sympathy to you all who have been through this

    I had 4 failed attempts. But I did it thursday here are my tips. Sedation pills two diazepam eye mask cover . The fear is in your mind you need to go into your body and pretend you are actually outside imagen the the cool air on your face..at first I refused I said I can't do this then the lady said il put u in then if u wanna come out then il take u straight out. I said okay then I went in and few seconds I said take me out. I can do this put me back in again. I was in the scanner and I did look up but I could still see abit of light so, they gave me headphones with radio playing ,helped at first then the mri sounds over powerd the music ! yes the sounds are annoying but huming along to them that helps! Hope this helps someone I had deep fear of enclose spaces like max level. MY mri was full whole spine. Took 20 -40 mins and when I did it I was so happy and proud of myself. I actually said to the mri scanner you are not beating me today I'm doing this and I did.

    I had a Lumbar MRI about two weeks ago, just gave me ear plugs and the button. No choice of music or lighting, or which direction I went in. It was my first ever MRI, so I didn't know what to expect. The tech asked how I was with claustrophobia, and told me it would be very loud. I just laid there with my eyes closed, trying to think about other things to not think about the tube being inches from my face. 15 minutes wasn't bad, glad it wasn't one of the longer ones I've heard about, though.

      Had mine Wednesday for my spine, had noise cancelling headphones which for me personally didn’t work, as I was nervous anyways so all my senses were almost amplified, the actual MRI itself wasn’t bad at all, it was just the noise for me personally that made me more anxious, mine only lasted 20 minutes, but I found closing my eyes and just focusing on keeping myself still and keeping my breathing under control helpful, they give you a buzzer also that you can push at anytime if you need a break

    Don't believe all that is said here. Mostly how fast is goes, Mine last usually 30-45 minutes. They did not mention that you have to remain motionless for the entire time. The noises played are typical but there's also a loud drumming and another sound that is very similar to a jackhammer. I think the main reason they give you earphones is not to hear music (that's impossible) but to try to drown out the awful noise and protect your eardrums. Not all MRIs are like this one if you're having some upper spine or head MRIs they place a Hannibal Lechter mask over your face to make sure you done move one muscle. And if you just have to move, or sneeze or cough they start the whole test over again.

    • @tweevers2
      @tweevers2 20 годин тому

      It also depends on how fancy or new the equipment and facility is. Even MRI I have had over the decades was done in older machines. They just give you standard ear plugs to put in. The tunnel is very small like being put into a casket...and for sure no mood lighting like in this video.

      They should give you a form before hand to fill out, and it tells you to tick the stuff you do have, e.g. plates and screws, metal implants etc! If you do, I’m sure they would figure out a way to MRI you without them going into the machine, as an MRI machine is basically a big magnet, as long as your plates and screws aren’t magnetic you should be fine, I forgot to take my rings off during my mri not to long ago because I was so anxious I forgot I had them on, and thank god they weren’t magnetic, otherwise it wouldn’t have ended well I don’t think 💀

    The best thing you can do is have your doctor prescribe you an oral sedative. It's usually half a mg of xanax before you leave the house, and another half when you arrive for an appointment. (DO NOT DRIVE...someone will have to drive you there and back home).
    It wears off after a few hours, and an MRI is a piece of cake if you are claustrophobic. I hope this helps anyone who is dreading an MRI.

    I think the leg propping affects the results. It's not a natural position you would lie/sleep in normally, it seems to be masking the problem area. I wanted the test to accurately locate & identify the source of all the pain. I was forced to still use one yesterday and I'm not happy about that. It should have been my choice. Yes, it would have been more painful for me but that's the entire point of the expensive MRI. No results yet but I'm very concerned. The nurse/tech also brought in my jacket with cellphone/ keys etc... I told her immediately to leave outside to the and she said "oh no, it's perfectly fine" which is completely opposite of the instructions I was previously given. I already want a do over at another facility but I'm sure the insurance won't approve a second one.

      The wedge has nothing to do with masking the area, it’s to make you more comfortable during your exam which also keeps you still. The jacket was fine as long as it didn’t get too close to the bore “tube”.

      I had one scheduled a few weeks ago , but started freaking out so they took me back out immediately. I had to go to another hospital with an open MRI machine. Apparently I am claustrophobic and didn't know it. I couldn't wait to get out of the machine and was dizzy and sweating for a while after. This was one of the worst experience I've ever had .

    If radiologists really believe gadolinium contrast in the body is safe. Send out the disclaimer documents along with the full name of the contrast weeks prior to the procedure, so patients can make an informed decision at their leisure, as opposed to 5 mins before the procedure. which is absolutely ridiculous. Im guessing most radiologists know of chelated gadolinium risks and would not have it injected in them selves.

    The machine is big enough for one to feel comfortable, and you could see both ends of the machine and notice that it's not that lengthy. Even if the fear is there, let it be, my advice is to let whatever comes into surface, without resistance , or forcing to feel good, you will naturally feel good, your body is intelligent enough to self regulate itself. Always remember the internal strength that each and every one of you has. We are powerful beyond measure, beyond measure 🤍 and through such experience, we are then able to truly feel our strength and resilience

      @Hera_Jane if they haven't found anything and you are still in pain, tell them to xray your hips, and also order injections to the SI joints. The si joints can cause issues with the way they function (and this cannot be seen on xrays or mri scans so in appearance they will look normal but can give you absolute pain clear down your legs) a pain doctor can iniect lidocaine into them and if it's them, the pain will stop immediately. AND a cord compression in the neck can cause symptoms anywhere including lower back and legs.
      I was blessed with one back surgrry, a hip implant and looking at SI joint fusions. Fun!!
