He just smiled his way through songs didn't he! I always had the impression that singing was like breathing to Luke...he HAD to sing..it was all that mattered..and God, how he sang! The greatest of all time.
There is no better performance than this. There never will be. Ever. You cannot den that this is brilliance at it's best. I get chills every time I watch this.
if you look at that man singing that song ,with the greatest of ease smiling , he is doing what he was born to do. sing .and i agree with DegBracken never seen it before and never will we see it again.
Everytime I watch this, I am so so blown away...I love Luke, such an amazing voice, man, personality, performer, stops me dead in me tracks every time, helps me to understand and appreciate the beauty in the world.....
It is not in the least amazing that Luke Kelly has sung many songs which in turn have turned into the definitive version. It should come as no surprise at all .
I had the privilege of seeing the Dubliners several times when I was a young man in Newry Co. Down in the town hall and the parochial hall. I will never forget hearing Luke sing this great song live to an enthralled audience.God bless you Luke.
I'm half temped to get 'word and tint' tattooed over my heart both because of this poem and Luke's performance... I remember it rocking me to the soles of my feet when I first heard it, and it still maks me misty. So much meaning to be found, so much tenderness.
I can't stop listen his songs. Everyday and everynight. Sure can bewitch us till today! Such passion in his voice! We must show his songs for future generations!
my father told me I must listen to this version as its pure its raw and its perfect to listen I only heard first time today and Jesus Christ what a song
Maddy Davies theres this old irish myth about some spirit that possesses someone and makes them burn twice as bright but twice as fast. I believe this to be true with Lukes life God love him
This amazing and so important for everybody, song, just not only to irish people, but every people in the World ,Patrick Kavanagh, The Greatest Composer and so very well sung by Our Beloved Luke Kelly express all historical felling from Ireland. Sure for many and many people this poem and song mean the most deepest feeling from their lives in our Beloved Ireland. Their fight for Better Days and FREEDOM. Sure you deserve all my admire, respect and all my Love for you the brave and Warriors irish people. 😗😙😚🇮🇪👍☘☘☘☘God bless you always.
From Dante's unrequited love for Beatrice, to the love lorn teenager of the Jedward generation, the sentiment remains the same. From the exquisite words to the sublime musical delivery, this is a rare capturing of one of the human sentiments that will enrapture, enthrall and enrage man for millenia. Watch, listen and weep.
This song and Luke's rendition is so emotional. It brings, I don't really know what, a longing or yearning for something I can't put a name to, but which is so overwhelming.
My da died a week ago he and I are huge fans of LK and his favourite song is this cos it reminds him of his wife (me ma) so therefore when I play this it reminds me of me Da and hopefully he sitting beside Mr. Legend so he can listened to his favourite song 😢
There are singers and critics lets be hones but when the likes of Ciaran MacMahuna says " get Luke to sing Raglan Road" you know an expert in Irish singing tradition has blessed the singer and the song. Rightly so too, Luke got the message from Paddy Kavanagh and made it his own and he has never been bettered and never will. What a legacy he has left us all.
Any other video on youtube would be filled with arguments about religion, politics, war etc but not Lukes. Beautiful music attracts beautiful people. What a man
There are times in life when "NOW" will generate GENIUS. I heard the studio recording and this live presentation. When you are in the moment, the truth will set you free!!!
Thanks - I like to think that they are just so stunned by what they are hearing that they can't move...that's what happened to me when I first saw and heard this. And of course Luke was so alive, crackling with energy, interested in everyone and everything, he'd have most people acting like zombies in comparison. Such a lovely man!
This is an absolutely beautiful love song. I always thought Van did a good version, but with all respect Van, this is the definitive version by Luke. The look and expression on Patrick Kavanagh`s face at 4.55, a little whisper and memory as he remembers and recalls his lost love. A memory most of us can recall. RIP
Agree on this being the definitive performance, Alan, still left spellbound by it 20 years or so after first seeing it on an Irish TV trad music archive programme. However that's not Patrick Kavanagh listening - he was already dead 10 years or so when this was recorded (in 1979, I think). The three venerable gents listening so reverently are Ciarán MacMathúna - radio presenter/music collector in his younger days / Benedict Kiely - the rather good Tyrone writer/novelist / and Paddy Tunney - an excellent singer from Fermanagh. I believe all three of them have also since left to join Luke in the snug in the sky. The moment you're referring to is between Kiely and MacMathúna. 30 years since Luke was taken from us this very week also - which has me looking for this gem again.
I know looking at this clip that some of those in that room were transfixed by the beauty of the moment, an understanding of words and music wasn't enough, you had to feel a resonance from that banjo/voice combination that touches a place where the sun don't shine!!
Awh this is just blowin' me socks off 5 times in a row!!!! Thank you Kelly!!! Look at the way Benedict Kiely is lost in that wonderful time of the song!!! A piece of magical and beautiful history!!! And as for Patrick and the names he's called on this site, shut the fuck up lads and listen to this here!! I've just finished a study of PK and unless you do the same you will never understand what lay beneath the surface!! Thank you o'er again a million times Kelz!!! Hope my opinion isn't too strong
i think that he would be just as good today as he was then , you have to admire that voice . Thank you
Thousands of love songs later we still come back to Raglan Road.
Always and everyday listening Luke's songs!!! It's a greatest pleasure! Unforgetttable his voice!!!
luke kellys voice would send shivers dwn ur spine!!!
The man, the song, the country...filled with passion.
He just smiled his way through songs didn't he! I always had the impression that singing was like breathing to Luke...he HAD to sing..it was all that mattered..and God, how he sang! The greatest of all time.
Beautiful, Celtic and love of all.
There is no better performance than this. There never will be. Ever. You cannot den that this is brilliance at it's best. I get chills every time I watch this.

You are a lucky man! You could watch Luke alive!!!
I'm half temped to get 'word and tint' tattooed over my heart both because of this poem and Luke's performance... I remember it rocking me to the soles of my feet when I first heard it, and it still maks me misty. So much meaning to be found, so much tenderness.

Luke said it was never about the Voice.... it was all about the Words....and not about great singers Just .....Great Songs....
Touched, no, pierced my heart entirely and made me cry. What an angel. Tragic to have lost him.
Maddy Davies theres this old irish myth about some spirit that possesses someone and makes them burn twice as bright but twice as fast. I believe this to be true with Lukes life God love him

Always loved his voice.... a man who sang his heart out!
Sweet sea shanty, with a love for, apparently, the most beautiful woman in Dublin. What a Claim, what a TRIBUTE!
Watch, listen and weep.
bringing Kavanagh's masterpiece to life ....sweet jesus it reaches deep within and plays the heart strings
This song and Luke's rendition is so emotional. It brings, I don't really know what, a longing or yearning for something I can't put a name to, but which is so overwhelming.

I feel I live this song every day .... Men and women are different ... but we love them more than they do us - it's all in the song
A true hero
Luke Kelly R.I.P
I've been learning a few trad tunes now and i still marvel at how these people could learn and remember every song so perfectly!
I'm singing this on Saturday night at a Charity Music night with my mate Ray also She Moved Through The Fair
Beautiful. If only I could produce such art...

It's a shame I can only love this comment once.
Awesome, no one sings this like luke. Rip

It just makes more and more sense to see him moved like that. Thanks for that tid-bit :)

+seanbaite47 And the guitar player, Al O'Donnell, joined them yesterday. RIP
I did'nt realise Al had passed away. Oh i am very sorry to learn this. Rest in peace
the hairs are standing on my neck!! absolute legend
I know looking at this clip that some of those in that room were transfixed by the beauty of the moment, an understanding of words and music wasn't enough, you had to feel a resonance from that banjo/voice combination that touches a place where the sun don't shine!!
He shook the hand of guitarist Al O' Donnell at the end, knowing they had made a perfect job of that great poem by Patrick Kavanagh.
flawless without a doubt :)
Even though the song is very sad, just look at the way Luke smiles his way through it.
Oh what a voice ...what a heart
Look at the man with the black tie in focus @ 1:43 and again @ 4:03 - I think this song connects to something in his memory...
Beautiful version
The poem (by Patrick Kavanagh) is called Raglan Road, and as a lyric it's meant to be sung to an air called Dawning of the Day.
Awh this is just blowin' me socks off 5 times in a row!!!! Thank you Kelly!!! Look at the way Benedict Kiely is lost in that wonderful time of the song!!! A piece of magical and beautiful history!!! Someone said it here somewhere on UA-cam....if love had a voice it would sound like Luke's. Best description I have heard yet.
