To everyone crying about the sugar ! Adding in sugar is very much needed because after you dilute the melon and milk (cream in his case) with the water it tastes abit 🥴 sooo adding in alot of sugar is part of the otai recipe however every household and every tongan do their’s differently and it’s not like you have to do it exactly how he’s doing it so if you ever make this tongan drink then feel free to leave out the sugar and add in what you please malo aupito !
agreed! also every melon isn't the same, u might buy one thats super sweet then u buy another one and find out its not very sweet (happens all the time in the states😪)
Thank you for sharing, I’m cooking island Māori and always have wondered how this yummy spring was made. No I can make it for my family appriciate yous making this video
That is exactly the same tool Malaysian people use to scrape coconut to make coconut milk. But they also have machines, round shaped that scrape it faster
That watermelon is massive. When the watermelons first come out, our local Countdown charges $8.50/kg so that watermelon would cost heaps. When the season is almost over they drop it down to $1.50/kg so we wait until they drop the price.
Never tried this watermelon drink before, it looks ok but, the sugar contents and cream bit, is just a little sweet for me. but, will try it anyhow with the fresh coconut.
As an Italian-Samoan, I love this Tongan Pasefika fruit drink. I usually buy more than 2 at the yearly PASEFIKA FESTIVAL in Auckland, N.Z. My aunty uses Highlander sweet condense milk n BRAVO....Bless our Pasefika family n food n beverage delicatessen. Ofa atu Toko n thanks for this great Clip.
Nice...nice..yu had a fijian music on, which makes the otai as delicious ad ever. Thank yu,as i have tasted otai thru a samoan friend of mine and loved it.
@@tamaratuivasa2978 Why would it taste sour though? I've never had this drink before, but when I make drinks using fresh watermelon (such as an agua fresca) I don't add any sugar because I find the watermelon to be sweet enough. Is it the coconut that gives it a sour flavor unsweetened?
Malo Bro

Can you mix it with mango in it?
gene vulaca yes, you can even add pineapple (use crushed pineapple from the can with the juice).
Yes... So many ways..and use what you got
Adding crushed pineapples is good w it especially watermelon otai. I'd recommend using milk tho not cream
I recommend using milk not cream lol cream is a bit over the top
U can use half n half, or moca mix or organic coconut milk
Appreciate the lesson :)
? Adding sugar and cream

I'm sure it doesn't need any sugar!
Yes it does cause it can be tasteless and sour..

Tropical people love’s sugar, it’s one reason diabetes is huge in the islands!
