Budget Millennium Falcon Part 3 - cheap weathering

  • It's all about cheap, quick and easy weathering which still looks the part - in this episode I bring out the old favourites: oil paints. Part 3 of a series where I repaint the cheaper Revell kit (which comes prepainted) to try and obtain a low cost replica of this iconic movie vehicle.
    In this video I use:
    Mig Ammo matt varnish
    Windsor & Newton Oil paints in Titanium White, Lamp black and Burnt Umber.
    Mig Ammo Dark Brown Wash for Green Vehicles
    AK Interactive Streaking Grime for Dark Yellow
    Mig Ammo Satin Black
    Harder & Steenbeck Evolution 2 in 1 airbrush fitted with 0.25mm nozzle
    These techniques are as simple as they get and are suitable for all levels of modeller.

      Thank you so much for this comment, this is really nice to read. I enjoyed doing this falcon but I've lost my appetite for star wars models, I'm glad it stands as a useful reference. My youngest son broke the model itself but I still have the majority of it here 😔

Too bad I won't get the rest of the tips before then i guess...I'll try my best & hopefully will come out with a decent result (this is the first model I've started this century! Got quite rusty in the process) thanks to all your tips!

    Brilliant work. I'm going to go see about some Oils to throw into my paint kit. Some good tips on the weathering. I use mostly acrylics so it's hard to get the same sort of effect as you show. I was wondering what everyone was using, it would never had occurred to m to use oils. Thanks! :)

    The techniques that you show here are excellent. I learned quite a bit in a very short time from watching your paint technique and also from the oils you suggested. Thank you. How do you ge tthe oils to dry more quickly after you gave painted the model? how long do they take to dry if left alone?

    I am current building the studio scale falcon by DeAgostini. I have just come from a shop in merry hill where I have seen some of your amazing model. One of the staff members recommended I have a look at your videos. I have taken a lot of helpful tips. I am wondering how I can display the finished model when it is complete. They recommended magnets. Would this be the best way.

  • @NapFloridian
    @NapFloridian 8 років тому

    Hello ScaleModelMedic,
    would there be a way you could list in your (maybe) description all the colors you used in the model, so that we could replicate the effects, and even shop for them. For Example myself, I am on a tight budget and very new to modeling, leave alone airbrushing, and I would kill myself if I ruin an awesome model such as the Falcon.
    Thanks in advance
    Also big thanks for being so patient, answering questions, and showing detailed work. Most people here on youtube only want to show off and not really teach you on how to do it. Thanks a million

    I'm currently building the falcon and new to modelbuilding.
    I use acrylic paints. Can the weathering effect be reached with these paints aswel?

    • @ScaleModelMedic
      @ScaleModelMedic  3 роки тому +1

      Sure, a lot of the weathering is acrylic in this series. All of the stuff with the washes is acrylic based. Check out my video called "CHERNOBYL Rust" for using acrylic instead of oil paint to do streaking.

    • @ElDimitrius
      @ElDimitrius 3 роки тому

      @@ScaleModelMedic thanks!
      Wil have a look.
      But i see you use oil based for the weathering. Acrylic dry faster in my experience (for so far i have any 🤣)
      And when i try to 'blend' it al turns brownish

    • @ScaleModelMedic
      @ScaleModelMedic  4 роки тому +1

      Hi I've always found tamiya stuff to be a little bit on the "hot" side, it might melt your underlying paint layers, but I cant be sure you would need to do some tests first. If they're not too hot they would probably work in a similar fashion.

  • @sonykroket
    @sonykroket 7 років тому

    Nice job. What happened to the cockpitwindows though, did you spraypaint over them? They're like gone while that is one of the key details? Plus, for a budget model as you say, you spent more money on paint than the model is worth and it still doesn't look like the beige/lightbrown-matte finish the original has? It looks good but too gunmetal-ish. You made it look like a transformer or Battlestar Galactica-model, it doesn't look Star Wars at all so whats the point of these referencepics if they don't look like the moviemodel?
    I've seen cheaper and better weathering finishes, no offense. And I'm not even a professional modelbuilder, I just like to build and paint kits to make them look as close to the moviemodel as possible while not spending too much unnecessary time and money on them.

    • @ScaleModelMedic
      @ScaleModelMedic  7 років тому

      Sony Kroket the windows are covered in masking tape....

    • @sonykroket
      @sonykroket 7 років тому

      I understand. Did you apply cockpitdetails? I only cut out the door in the backplate of it, when I'm done weathering it and want to place some lights in it, it should give more detail. I made sure I didn't glue anything so I can take it apart again as I please to finish it properly.
      Man, I've picked up the modelkithobby again recently and it's getting addictive. I spent alot of time and money on RC planes and robots but during the winter, it;'s great to build and paint kits.

    • @sonykroket
      @sonykroket 7 років тому

      BTW that blue engine backplate it has, they really should've put more effort into it. I paid 70 euros for it while it's not that big. The X-wing model of this series is like gigantic and has a very good factory look already. I paid 35 bucks for it, it's almost 45 cms which would be about 18 or 19 inches, I think.
      Revell really stepped up their game since the 80s as most of their kits back then had bad finish and warping.

    • @ScaleModelMedic
      @ScaleModelMedic  7 років тому

      Sony Kroket I did not add any more detail inside. you see it in part 4 which is online. also the lighting in part 4 is a bit better maybe you will think better of the colour. you paid a lot more than me for this kit! maybe it isn't so common now but it was really cheap before.

    • @sonykroket
      @sonykroket 7 років тому

      ScaleModelMedic I understand and you're right. Do you have the X-wing from the same line from Revell? Also a snapkit? It's fucking awesome and huge with great detail, perfect for a good weathering job.. It seems most Revellproducts are cheaper for europeans as it's a german company.
