Since I've been in the US, the turn right on red isn't the best thing for pedestrians. I was almost hit twice by cars doing that when I had the walk signal because some drivers only check left for traffic and then turn when it's clear and don't even consider if a pedestrian is crossing. I always watch those cars at intersections who are turning right and some just turn without even looking for pedestrians, so there's been a few times I've have to avoid walking immediately when the walk signal appeared and wait for them to turn so I didn't get hit. His helmet argument was stupid.
He's crazy - re American football players run up to abouy 15Km/hr! He might think that they run up to 160Km/hr and vehicles run at 10-15Km/hr maximum? He crazy! Motorcycles and pushbikes in Australia and New Are Compulsary no ifs or buts about it! anything that can travel more than 20Km/hr under its own power (not sk8 boards and roller-sk8s) one must wear a helment unless one is crazy!
Regarding personal safety I.e. wearing helmets, you don’t just have an obligation for your own safety, but you could end up using medical facilities unnecessarily had you made an effort to protect yourself.

Re speed cameras- it depends on the state as to how strict the application of the law will be. However as someone who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s I would ask people to look at our road toll then to now. We have doubled our population, and halved the deaths from car crashes. Cracking down on speeding/ drink driving is a major part of this. The speed limit is an upper limit not a target.

If you speed 4km over they only fine for 1km they always take off 3kms. If you haven't got a fine for years you can ask for no fine due to good behaviour.
100% agree that people don't understand what "limit" means - an 80km/h limit doesn't mean "drive as close to 80km/h as you can", it literally means "drive UP TO 80km/h BUT NO MORE". If you aren't able to keep your car under that speed, then it's your problem (and yes, I can think of many situations where it's harder to control your speed (e.g. downhill), but in about 25 years of driving (including professionally) I've never had a speeding fine, so I don't understand the difficulty. That said, the road toll dropping is as much about better safety technology as anything else...
@@brosert True about better technology, also safer roads such as ironing out some of the horror stretches on the Pacific Highway. One thing about dual carriageways is I feel safer as I don’t have impatient people up my butt trying to get me to drive faster. They can just go around me now.
Kaitlyn, in Australia the authorities do strange things. They do a risk analysis on intersections. If they consider that it is safe to make a left turn on red they put a sign there to indicate that is the case. Speedometers in cars read faster than the speed the vehicle is actually doing so we already have a safety margin. I am seventy. I remember quite clearly the days before mandatory seat belts, helmets etc. They were introduced to try to reduce the number of people who died as a consequence of there absence. The government does tax tobacco very heavily that goes towards the health system to help pay for the damage we do to ourselves by smoking. We have an affordable health system here and the tobacco tax is one way of making those who damage their health pay for the resultant costs. (yes, I am a smoker). Your attitudes are very refreshing by comparison with Tristan's. Thank you.
Right on red, left on red could be implemented but Australia tends to have more intersections with freeflowing slip lanes that bypass the lights...unless the intersection is in a cramped area where they cannot physically build the slip lane then that's where they could add LOR. But as Australia tends to pick the safest version of things it might not ever be used as in the US they have found there are more pedestrian deaths and injuries as a result of right on red.
Yeah, Australia often has slip lanes to turn left, and a lot of intersections have a little sign saying "Turn left anytime with care." Also we have more roundabouts than the US, which almost exclusively uses 4-way intersections.
The sauce situation is easy to understand...and this includes the free refills...US restaurants and other food service industries don't pay hardly anything for their workers wages...this means those businesses make more profit but can also allow more expenditure on complimentary (freebies) products to their customers at the expense of better wages to the workers. Some places do offer free refills in Australia though and if not in a more touristy or popular area, sauce is commonly free

Regarding tax on cigarettes, it's there to discourage smoking whether it works or not the idea is because we have an option for FREE healthcare, the government doesn't want to have the burdon of hospital beds being used for smoking related illnesses ... basically the government is concerned it would have a huge negative impact on the free healthcare system.
That is a joke! Healthy non smokers live into their 80's and 90's This costs the health care system heaps in old folks homes, Dementia wards and incontinence pads. I don't think the harsh Australian sun compared to what's experienced in the northern hemisphere (which is definitely a thing) is attributable to a hole in the ozone layer. Rather, its to do with the tilt of the earth - southern hemisphere tilts toward the sun, northern hemisphere tilts away. it makes a difference.
That's not how it works. Earth's rotational axis is tilted with respect to its orbit around the sun but that's how we get seasons. In Southern Hemisphere summer (Northern winter) the Southern Hemisphere is pointed more towards the sun but six months later (Southern winter, Northern summer) the Northern Hemisphere is pointed towards the sun and the Southern Hemisphere is pointed away.

Couple of points - With Petrol (Gas) Stations, yes there are more pay at the pump options now, but also, in Australia you pay after you get petrol, not in advance. Also the US system is almost impossible from someone without a US credit card (as it asks ZipCode!). With the speed cameras, yes they are a pain, but you won't get a ticket less than 5 or 6k's over. And remember Australia has less than half the road deaths per capita that the US has.
@@adambrock3932 No it is correct. 12.4 (USA) vs 4.8 per 100,000. Is it really that hard to just go in to the gas station and pay for your petrol. The speed camera rates vary depending on state. Victoria is very strict and will get you doing 3km/h over while other states and territories will go to the 9 over the limit or NSW which was 10% +4km/h.
As for speeding, do the calculation on how much time you actually save over the distance, also any increase in speed really increases your chance of injury in the case of a crash. I have been driving for 57 years and had two speeding fines which were my fault through inattention.
I went to a servo in Melbourne about 30 years ago and when you drove in you rolled over the one way spike grid, try and do a runner and you tore your tyres to shreds.

As for paying at the pump, most of us old enough to remember still want full service. The attendant would fill your tank for you, wash your windscreen, check your oil and tyre pressures, answer any questions you might have with knowledgeable answers...... and the business still made a good profit selling the petrol at an affordable price. Now the price is 50% tax plus 10 % added GST, there is no service, the business only makes about 1 cent per litre and has to sell soft drink, milk, bread , groceries etc to actually make a profit.
Regarding speed camera's, we have cruise control these days, therefore, there is no excuse for driving above the speed limit, and yet the authorities allow 3k above before you get a ticket, so really, it;s up to you to relax, settle down, set your cruise, and stay out of trouble.
There is no ozone hole over Australia... When you are closer to the poles the atmosphere is thinner so more UV comes through. You can pay at the pump after hours at most out of City petrol stations.

Kind of a stupid argument. There's a lot of stupid reasons people end up in hospital but lucky you're not the gatekeeper that allows or prohibits people from going to a hospital. I've never needed a seatbelt in my life and in all my years of riding a bike, I've never needed a helmet, so yeah kind of dumb to think that everyone who rides a bike will end up ICU if they don't wear a helmet.

Not everyone who rides a bike ends up in ICU, but as long as you're traveling at speeds where you can't stop instantly and safely, on top of sharing the road with others, helmets and seatbelts are necessary precautions. I want to straighten something out regarding condiments, not everywhere charges for sauce. You’ll find if you’re on the beaten track you’ll be paying for sauce likewise shop keepers may choose to charge you a tourist for sauce but not locals or every day customers. Also in the US you probably are being charged for sauce but because they don’t seperate it in the cost you just don’t know you’re paying for it.

A couple of decades ago you could pay for petrol at the pump, without going inside. Unfortunately, often the transaction failed and you had to go in to sort it out. I think most franchisee petrol station owners prefer that you come into the store so you will be tempted to buy their products. Paying at the pumps means their fresh items, bread, milk, etc, will go off before customers buy them. Also, an increase in drive-offs without paying made business owners turn off pump transactions. Most Aussies just don’t expect to avoid the shop.
Australia actually exports crude oil. And we export a lot of LNG (liquid natural gas) Unfortunately the gas plants and crude oil facilities have contracts with other countries so most goes overseas. Otherwise it would be cheaper.
Our crude oil is of very high quality, so not used for petrol. it is cheaper to import lesser quality oil to make petrol and export our high grade oil.
I also watched a lot of Tristan's vlogs. His accounting of experiences here in Australia were on the whole, very positive. I also enjoyed his perspective and his enthusiastically embracing all (most) things Australian. Let's face it, he was really scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to hate in this one. And yes, our internet still sucks and our flies are a different breed altogether :)
Yep, It was just his opinion, they werent horrible things. I wasnt offended. The one thing I really agree with him about is the speed cameras, Australia is turning into a big brother state. We are being watched everywhere. Speed cameras, red light cameras, now they even have seat belt cameras, and they catch people holding phones,. Australia is turning into a nanny state, but many countries are going that way. Australian and US privacy is also being eroded by mostly American devices like smartphones, and computers, so Americans are no better off in that regard.
As an Aussie when I go to the 24hr servo & I order a pork & fennel roll and a lamb & rosemary roll I always say NO SAUCE. And doppy usually puts 2 sauces in that I don't use... Only reason for sauce is to cool the pie or improve the flavour, if a pie or sausage roll need sauce to improve them they are not worth eating..
My experience, when I visited the US a few years ago, was that I found their pay first system more difficult. I usually fill up every time but in the US I had to pay up front and that meant I had to know how much petrol my hire car would take which involved getting the owners manual out to check the size of the fuel tank and ding some calculations. Not convenient.
The reason petrol station make you go inside to pay, is that they don't make money from selling fuel, they make money from selling everything else. If you pay at the pump, you are not going to impulse buy an over priced snack. In the early 00s petrol station did push "pay at the pump" but that quickly disappeared when it killed sales.
One of the reasons petrol stations want you to come in to pay is that the profit margin for the site owner on a litre of petrol is quite small. If they can get you to buy a couple of Mars bars and a coffee while paying, they have probably made more money than the tank of fuel.
Many decades ago, we had a system where you could feed coins into a receiver for what ever coins you may have had to hand [remember coins?] and it would cut out when the credit ran out. this was in the days when servos shut early.

I loved Japanese service stations which just offered free tea, with as many refills as you want - it is meant to be a safety feature, keeping drivers refreshed and alert. For a while there was a scheme in Western Australia, where driving distances are typically long, where drivers could get free teas or coffees. I have not noticed these advertised for a while
Generally speed cameras have more tolerance than 2 to 3 kmh...most cars speedometers aren't very accurate so usually the tolerance can be up to 5 kmh...but that doesn't mean you can go 5 kmh faster because your car might be one that has a speedometer that shows a more accurate or slower speed at the actual limit. So going faster means you may actually be going over the limit even when going exactly the speed limit according to your speedo.
I’ve driven 10 km/h over the speed limit with a cop going the other way, and never been fined for speeding up to 10km/h , but have been fined for going 15 km/h and above.
As a born and bred Australian I am so proud of the local flies . They are such attentive greeters of humans.. They work for the Fly Tourist Bureau (FTB). Employees of the FTB are literally everywhere. We have pulled into a parking bay on a remote highway and within 5 seconds an FTB will be greeting us. Sometimes there will be dozens. Three years ago my sister and I travelled to Karajini National Park on holiday. During daylight we each had a personal retinue of over 109 flies. We ate lunch in vehicle. Tea was not served until the sun has set. We ate fly free at Twilight. Seriously Australian flies are at the very least world class in terms of annoyance and persistence..
Seriously, if we were booked for 3k over the speed limit how long do you think that government would last? Cameras are set to 10k over ($100 fine) and they are signposted “speed camera ahead”
Thank you for a very balanced commentary. You nailed it on all points covered. The flies are worse in some parts of Australia than others. Especially the little black bush flies encountered west of the ranges and sometimes in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Sydney and Brisbane don't normally have a problem with them nor the entire coastal plain all the way to Cooktown. But as soon as you go inland they are a huge problem without decent insecticide. Rid, Aerogard, Bushmans etc. Melbourne has plastic strips at the entrance to every store and delicatessen to dissuade flies following their customers or food scents inside. Seems to work for the most part.
Re not being allowed to turn left on red light, there are some intersections where you can turn left on red. However, one intersection near me in Prospect/Blacktown became ‘Turn Left on Red Light’ for about a year, and then went back to a red arrow instead. The intersection was at a small street with a 50 kmh limit turning onto a main road with a speed limit of 80 kmh. I think the slow turning traffic created a very likely collision risk with fast moving traffic on the highway. I was always cautious and ensured that there was a big gap for me to turn left between cars on the main highway but I saw many cars just turn in front of cars going through the intersection at full speed. I think recently turned left at a Turn Left on Red sign at a quiet intersection somewhere in Western Sydney. I was surprised because I thought they had all been removed.
Regarding the hatred for speed cameras, in most cases your speedometer is calibrated low most times two three or more. So if you get pinged by a camera and they allow up to three k over you will most likely be doing five six or more over.

The average price today (6/1/22) of fuel in the US is AU$1.35/litre, so all in all not that huge a difference. Plus when he was here he was getting a fantastic exchange rate from $US to $AU so in reality he had nothing to whinge about.
The average Aussie driver starts slowing down when they see a Speed Limit Sign. That tends to help. I get where Your coming from with Motorbike Helmets. I live in The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland it's up a Mountain Range behind. You'll find Rainforests, Waterfalls and Rolling Green Hills with much Cooler Temperatures than the coast. It's wonderful for growing a wide variety of and is Dairy Farming Country. Back to My story a few years back a Young Man I've known since He was a Kid had a Major Accident. Life was pretty good to Him. He liked His work and Happily Married to His Wife and devoted Dad to a 3 year old Daughter. He was living in a town about a Mountain Range. One night He decided to hop on His Motorbike and go for a ride. It all started when a Cow escaped it paddock. He tried slowing down but didn't make it. He killed the Cow and wrecked His Motorbike. While laying in the road a Lady Ran Over Him. She then backed over Him including across His Groin. She thought She'd hit a Kangaroo and went to get Her Husband to Help. Upon Her return She discovered the awful truth. News Reporters were saying He would probably die at the time. Thank goodness that He was wearing His Helmet, because pretty much every other bone in His body was broken. But thanks to Modern Medicine with all of those Rods, Plates and Screws. He's back on His feet and living His life again. He and His Loving Wife who stuck by Him have even had 2 more Kids. I was talking to them when She was Pregnant with their last baby. I said "If any Father had the right to give that "Look What I Did!" look. It was Him."
Pay at the Pump started to be introduced in Aus but they basically remained unused. I guess the decision was not to spend money on a system that was ignored. Also I have a friend that always says no ice when buys a drink and the staff just comply.
Mobil Petrol stations introduced it in the late 90’s and I think they phased it out by 2005. Think of the extra expense a serve has maintaining 8 eftpos terminals , as opposed to two inside. Then multiply that by the number of servo’s the operate in Australia...

@@VideosCPS I'm not surprised, I remember years ago that a couple of servos near me brought them in (have since gone again), I remember looking at it and you needed to follow the instructions closely to be able to pay at the pump. When someone is getting petrol the last thing that they want to do is have to read instructions to figure it out when you can just do what you are used to doing
I always find it odd when I go to US that I have to pay for the petrol before I pump. I want to fill the car and not sure how much it will take. And what if I pay too much and it overflows. So always have to under-estimate the cost. Also most places I go you can pay at the pump.
I think pay at the pump was done badly here when it was introduced and it was not popular and of course if you pay at the pump you don't go inside for impulse buying of goodies.
Some Americans unfortunately don't get the fact that we have a universal healthcare system which will treat bike riders with head injuries at taxpayer expense, with full hospital care paid for. So it's perfectly reasonable to expect Governments to make safety mandates such as helmet rules which are proven to reduce head injuries.
As for pay at pump, we stated to see that in Australia from the late 1980s, but it never became a majority thing. By the early 21st century, they actually started removing many of the ones they already had. Just remember, Aussie business owners are very adverse to extra costs (ie penny pinching a-holes), so the upkeep and replacement costs were considered too much too bare. Locally in my town, the one pay at pump place shut them down and replaced it with a pay on your phone app, which is totally awesome and should become the norm everywhere.

It is not widespread but I have come across areas when you can turn left when the light is red. Normally there is a sign saying this is permissible (Coffs Harbour and Brisbane for example).
Nearly every camera has a sign stating that the camera is coming up, how hard is that? Cameras are in city areas. I do a five hour drive from Eden to Shellharbour regularly, it has one camera.
Fact is Australia has plenty of oil but it is mostly left in the ground. The problem is that most of the refineries are closing down which will become a national security issue.
Actually Australia does have it's own oil, but most is sent (sold) to Asia for processing. Two things here. 1. The mining corporation makes money on the sale, and 2. The government has no problem justifying Import Parity Pricing for petroleum (a problem it had when most was refined within Australia). There are other aspects to petrol pricing, but mainly these are it.

Actually, harsh sunlight in Australia is due to the location of the country on the hemisphere and the elliptical orbit of the planet. So in Victoria, you step outside in the height of summer, say at midday, and burn quickly. Same temperature same time in Queensland. You get a bit hot. For the five year olds out there. Take a basketball and draw a line for the equator and the map of Australia. Take a torch, call it the sun and point it at the ball. Aiming at the equator. See the way the light hits the ball? See how sharp the angle of the light gets. The further from the equator you get? That is why the sunlight is more severe on high uv days. The thinning ozone doesn't help, of course. A lot of drinks are actually bottled in Australia, so import costs are not the reason the prices are high, taxes are to blame, but they are there to deter you from drinking and smoking. We hate it too.
The reason we have traffic lights at all is for safety, intersections where, perhaps, there is a high accident rate. We do, as you mentioned, have TURN LEFT ON RED LIGHT where there there is often light traffic on the cross road at some times. Its a safety issue. I learnt the US rue when I got honked at an intersection in New York City. I soon learnt that you follow the road rules for the place yr in !!
You can actually turn left on a red light in some places in Australia. It will have a sign saying, 'Left turn on red permitted after stopping'. I've seen them in Qld, NSW and SA. I'm not sure about other states/territories.
With the red light thing, alot of the time it gives time for people to cross the roads safely. Instead of vehicles hitting them. The red light for cars gives enough time for safety.

Anyway if it was the new normal rule people would get use to it and look for pedestrians. Plus you do realise that pedestrians could only legally Criss the road the person turning on red is leaving. Re Paying for petrol You pay before you fill at Cosco. Most Petrol Stations charge you what you fill when you go to the office to pay. You need to get outside Sydney.
Since primary school, kids are taught to slip, slop, slap, that is: slip on sun protective clothing, slop on water resistant, broad spectrum, SPF30 or higher sunscreen and slap on a broad-brimmed hat. Its innate in many of us now. However there are always people that want to learn the hard way.
Are the refills and condiments free or are they included in the price in anticitated of there being asked for. If this is so and you do not take them, are you being overcharged for the meal ?
You can turn on a red light when there is a sign that says you can in New South Wales. He is in QLD and they don’t have that option there….but then again Queensland traffic is not that bad most of the time.
i don't know if the petrol station thing is rare, i see it around quite a lot. but i am aware that it is limited, in the sense that, if you want to pay for your petrol at the pump, you can only do so in fixed amounts, like $10 or $20, and it is pre-paid. i think lots of people just aren't looking for it, so we forget that it is there. also, haha, i know the speed camera thing can be quite unconvincing but there is a window of about 2-3 km/h above the limit you can go. and it seems pretty small but if it got raised to 5 km/h over the speed limit before people got caught, drivers are going to start pushing the new limit instead, knowing they can go 5 km/h above without penalty, and then the original speed limit becomes pointless, to an extent. but, i do think an associated problem is that the speed limits themselves change too many times on a single stretch of road! :P
Quix service stations used to have pay at the pump, and it was great, but them 7/11 bought out quix and removed all the pay at the pump bowsers and now we have to go inside so we can spend more money buying junk food we don’t need. And I still haven’t had a 7/11 coffee since they changed to paper lids, yuk.
Slip! Slop! Slap! Check out Sid the seagull ad from the 1980s. We don’t call them gas stations we call them service stations or servos. There are some areas around Sydney where you can turn left even when the light is red. You’ll see the black and white signs that say ‘Turn Left At Any Time With Care’.
As for paying for gas, there are 3 options, Pay After, Pay at the pump, Pay before. With the higher petrol prices the incidence of theft increases so more stations will introduce Pre Pay, there are a few, at the stations I frequent, that you can pay at the pump. Try COCO for example, They must be not far from you) they must have 50 bowsers where you put yr card in first.
I'm an Aussie. Agree with him on pay at pump, turn left on red, speed cameras, flies (but used to them of course). Free condiments means lower wages for wait staff, kitchen hands etc. Pay for things like condiments and drink refills or pay tips, you pay either way. Same for bar staff. It's not rocket science.
I have to admit I watched most of Tristan's videos while he was here - I'm always interested to see the persepctives of visitors/newcomers to Australia (same reason I'm here right now I guess). He was generally pretty (or indeed VERY) positive in the other videos. This was an attempt to correct the the balance, and to be honest he was scrounging for material.
It’s really easy not to get a speeding fine, don’t speed. The speed limit is just that, a limit, it’s not meant to be the speed you drive at it’s supposed to be the maximum safe speed. They could increase the tolerance but the way they would do that is by cutting the speed limit.
Petrol stations used to have staff that pumped petrol and you could at at the pump but they stopped that you mainly pay inside because it stopped people running out and not paying. Speed cameras are a bit of a pain but most modern cars have cruise control and you can set them. Free refills or condiments in regular cafes or restaurants might seem like a pain but they actually pay for staff so they don’t expect tips. Riding a motorcycle it’s illegal to not wear a helmet, jacket and pants, closed in shoes. As a motorcycle rider you are way more likely to get seriously injured if you hit a kangaroo or are involved in an accident, the gear will save your life the same as riding a push bike most major state will have specific lanes for push bikes but if you don’t value your head then it’s a concern
We have plenty of “Turn left with care’ traffic light intersections in cities. Speed, you get a ticket. 🤷♀️. If they don’t send fines for ‘slightly over the limit’ then everyone will drive at limit +5km. Condiment packs are not free. The business has to pay for those little condiment individual packs. I’ve seen people helping themselves to heaps of packs of condiments unnecessarily, and probably throwing them out. If they add sauce from a squeeze bottle then you generally get it free.
I remember as a kid seeing a local 'turn left with care' sign where someone had obliterated the final E so it read 'turn left with car' It amused my primary school self to no ends every time I saw it.
If you see a sign that says 80kph, that is the MAXIMUM speed allowed! If you are concerned about accidently exceeding 80kph by 3kph then drive at 75kph. You will arrive at your destination 30 seconds later but you will definitely not receive a fine!
Agree with previous comments about wages. Cost of condiments should be built into pricing anyway. Wearing a motorbike helmet saved my SIL from serious injury years ago just after helmets became compulsory. Enjoy the flies they taste extra good with your salad - extra protein - We have signs posted on corners where left turns are allowed on red lights. Usually where there is low pedestrian traffic. As for a lack of pay at the pump fueling stations, most of those to switched off so the customers may buy extra stuff like crap snack foods and sugar laden drinks at the till. As for the helmet requirements in Oz, that came about because of the unhelmeted motorcycle riders ending up dead or in the brain damaged parts of hospitals and eventually sent to a respite home where they are sent to die. As for helmet laws, depending on the state, everybody must wear a helmet riding a bicycle, a skate board, roller skates, scooter, etc.
I'm an Aussie who has watched all of Tristan's vlogs. He LOVES Australia! I bet he is kicking himself for using the "hate" word. Then again that may have been clever, as it looks like he got more viewers because of it , though I bet he's glad he is now out of the country.
Aussie who has been to the US three times. I've seen lots of Tristan's videos including the one reviewed here. Not being able to turn left on a red light is super annoying, as is not being able to do a U turn at lights. Not giving away stuff for free is partly how restaurants and cafes can pay their workers a living wage. No tips required. I have been fined for not wearing a helmet on a bicycle. Annoying at the time 25 years ago but I can see the sense in it. I've ridden motorbikes in Colorado and South Dakota, both helmet-free states and I wore a helmet all the time. High taxes on tobacco and alcohol helps pay for the medical system here. You know, the one that won't send you broke. If Tristan were a citizen and allowed to ride a bike with no helmet and he cracked his head on the pavement, he'd be glad tobacco and alcohol are so heavily taxed because his treatment would be free (or close to it). The flies here are really annoying, there's no denying it. Driving - there are limits on everything. If he wants to be able to speed by the 10 mph that's accepted in the US, then it must be OK to be a little over the BAC limit too. Imagine a driver who is a little over the BAC limit but that's OK, speeding a little but that's OK too, hitting Tristan on his bicycle while he's not wearing a helmet as that's also OK. Reasons to hate Australia.
Regarding the sun, I watched one of the GWS trainers put sunscreen on Toby Green the other day. This was for an afternoon game with limited sun exposure, but it was smart. I did wonder at first why he need help, but it occurred to me that footy players probably don't want sunscreen all over their hands during a game.

In terms of the free refills, the restaurant will be paying a decent wage in Australia, not relying on tips. Free refills are easier if you pay your staff a pittance.

Since I've been in the US, the turn right on red isn't the best thing for pedestrians. I was almost hit twice by cars doing that when I had the walk signal because some drivers only check left for traffic and then turn when it's clear and don't even consider if a pedestrian is crossing. I always watch those cars at intersections who are turning right and some just turn without even looking for pedestrians, so there's been a few times I've have to avoid walking immediately when the walk signal appeared and wait for them to turn so I didn't get hit. His helmet argument was stupid.

Re speed cameras- it depends on the state as to how strict the application of the law will be. However as someone who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s I would ask people to look at our road toll then to now. We have doubled our population, and halved the deaths from car crashes. Cracking down on speeding/ drink driving is a major part of this.

If you speed 4km over they only fine for 1km they always take off 3kms. If you haven't got a fine for years you can ask for no fine due to good behaviour.
100% agree that people don't understand what "limit" means - an 80km/h limit doesn't mean "drive as close to 80km/h as you can", it literally means "drive UP TO 80km/h BUT NO MORE". If you aren't able to keep your car under that speed, then it's your problem (and yes, I can think of many situations where it's harder to control your speed (e.g. downhill), but in about 25 years of driving (including professionally) I've never had a speeding fine, so I don't understand the difficulty.
That said, the road toll dropping is as much about better safety technology as anything else...

Kaitlyn, in Australia the authorities do strange things. They do a risk analysis on intersections. If they consider that it is safe to make a left turn on red they put a sign there to indicate that is the case.
Speedometers in cars read faster than the speed the vehicle is actually doing so we already have a safety margin.
I am seventy. I remember quite clearly the days before mandatory seat belts, helmets etc. They were introduced to try to reduce the number of people who died as a consequence of there absence.
The government does tax tobacco very heavily that goes towards the health system to help pay for the damage we do to ourselves by smoking. We have an affordable health system here and the tobacco tax is one way of making those who damage their health pay for the resultant costs. (yes, I am a smoker).

Right on red, left on red could be implemented but Australia tends to have more intersections with freeflowing slip lanes that bypass the lights...unless the intersection is in a cramped area where they cannot physically build the slip lane then that's where they could add LOR.
But as Australia tends to pick the safest version of things it might not ever be used as in the US they have found there are more pedestrian deaths and injuries as a result of right on red.
there are some intersections in NSW where they have, Stop before turning on Red light, but you treat the light as a Stop sign.

Yeah, Australia often has slip lanes to turn left, and a lot of intersections have a little sign saying "Turn left anytime with care." Also we have more roundabouts than the US, which almost exclusively uses 4-way intersections.
The sauce situation is easy to understand...and this includes the free refills...US restaurants and other food service industries don't pay hardly anything for their workers wages...this means those businesses make more profit but can also allow more expenditure on complimentary (freebies) products to their customers at the expense of better wages to the workers.
Some places do offer free refills in Australia though and if not in a more touristy or popular area, sauce is commonly free

I don't think the harsh Australian sun compared to what's experienced in the northern hemisphere (which is definitely a thing) is attributable to a hole in the ozone layer. Rather, its to do with the tilt of the earth - southern hemisphere tilts toward the sun, northern hemisphere tilts away. it makes a difference.
That's not how it works. Earth's rotational axis is tilted with respect to its orbit around the sun but that's how we get seasons. In Southern Hemisphere summer (Northern winter) the Southern Hemisphere is pointed more towards the sun but six months later (Southern winter, Northern summer) the Northern Hemisphere is pointed towards the sun and the Southern Hemisphere is pointed away.

Couple of points - With Petrol (Gas) Stations, yes there are more pay at the pump options now, but also, in Australia you pay after you get petrol, not in advance. Also the US system is almost impossible from someone without a US credit card (as it asks ZipCode!).
With the speed cameras, yes they are a pain, but you won't get a ticket less than 5 or 6k's over. And remember Australia has less than half the road deaths per capita that the US has.

@@adambrock3932 No it is correct. 12.4 (USA) vs 4.8 per 100,000. Is it really that hard to just go in to the gas station and pay for your petrol. The speed camera rates vary depending on state. Victoria is very strict and will get you doing 3km/h over while other states and territories will go to the 9 over the limit or NSW which was 10% +4km/h.

As for speeding, do the calculation on how much time you actually save over the distance, also any increase in speed really increases your chance of injury in the case of a crash. I have been driving for 57 years and had two speeding fines which were my fault through inattention.
I went to a servo in Melbourne about 30 years ago and when you drove in you rolled over the one way spike grid, try and do a runner and you tore your tyres to shreds.

As for paying at the pump, most of us old enough to remember still want full service.
The attendant would fill your tank for you, wash your windscreen, check your oil and tyre pressures, answer any questions you might have with knowledgeable answers...... and the business still made a good profit selling the petrol at an affordable price.
Now the price is 50% tax plus 10 % added GST, there is no service, the business only makes about 1 cent per litre and has to sell soft drink, milk, bread , groceries etc to actually make a profit.
Regarding speed camera's, we have cruise control these days, therefore, there is no excuse for driving above the speed limit, and yet the authorities allow 3k above before you get a ticket, so really, it;s up to you to relax, settle down, set your cruise, and stay out of trouble.
There is no ozone hole over Australia... When you are closer to the poles the atmosphere is thinner so more UV comes through.
You can pay at the pump after hours at most out of City petrol stations.

You’ll find if you’re on the beaten track you’ll be paying for sauce likewise shop keepers may choose to charge you a tourist for sauce but not locals or every day customers.
Also in the US you probably are being charged for sauce but because they don’t seperate it in the cost you just don’t know you’re paying for it.

A couple of decades ago you could pay for petrol at the pump, without going inside. Unfortunately, often the transaction failed and you had to go in to sort it out.
I think most franchisee petrol station owners prefer that you come into the store so you will be tempted to buy their products. Paying at the pumps means their fresh items, bread, milk, etc, will go off before customers buy them.
Also, an increase in drive-offs without paying made business owners turn off pump transactions. Most Aussies just don’t expect to avoid the shop.
We're more health and safety conscious here as most of those points are based upon that.

Australia actually exports crude oil. And we export a lot of LNG (liquid natural gas) Unfortunately the gas plants and crude oil facilities have contracts with other countries so most goes overseas. Otherwise it would be cheaper.
Our crude oil is of very high quality, so not used for petrol. it is cheaper to import lesser quality oil to make petrol and export our high grade oil.
I also watched a lot of Tristan's vlogs. His accounting of experiences here in Australia were on the whole, very positive. I also enjoyed his perspective and his enthusiastically embracing all (most) things Australian. Let's face it, he was really scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to hate in this one. And yes, our internet still sucks and our flies are a different breed altogether :)
Yep, It was just his opinion, they werent horrible things. I wasnt offended. The one thing I really agree with him about is the speed cameras, Australia is turning into a big brother state. We are being watched everywhere. Speed cameras, red light cameras, now they even have seat belt cameras, and they catch people holding phones,. Australia is turning into a nanny state, but many countries are going that way. Australian and US privacy is also being eroded by mostly American devices like smartphones, and computers, so Americans are no better off in that regard.

My experience, when I visited the US a few years ago, was that I found their pay first system more difficult. I usually fill up every time but in the US I had to pay up front and that meant I had to know how much petrol my hire car would take which involved getting the owners manual out to check the size of the fuel tank and ding some calculations. Not convenient.
The reason petrol station make you go inside to pay, is that they don't make money from selling fuel, they make money from selling everything else. If you pay at the pump, you are not going to impulse buy an over priced snack.
In the early 00s petrol station did push "pay at the pump" but that quickly disappeared when it killed sales.
Few people shop while expecting the fuel queue to wait for you. There are park spots for that in Australia and elsewhere
One of the reasons petrol stations want you to come in to pay is that the profit margin for the site owner on a litre of petrol is quite small. If they can get you to buy a couple of Mars bars and a coffee while paying, they have probably made more money than the tank of fuel.
Many decades ago, we had a system where you could feed coins into a receiver for what ever coins you may have had to hand [remember coins?] and it would cut out when the credit ran out. this was in the days when servos shut early.

I loved Japanese service stations which just offered free tea, with as many refills as you want - it is meant to be a safety feature, keeping drivers refreshed and alert. For a while there was a scheme in Western Australia, where driving distances are typically long, where drivers could get free teas or coffees. I have not noticed these advertised for a while
Generally speed cameras have more tolerance than 2 to 3 kmh...most cars speedometers aren't very accurate so usually the tolerance can be up to 5 kmh...but that doesn't mean you can go 5 kmh faster because your car might be one that has a speedometer that shows a more accurate or slower speed at the actual limit. So going faster means you may actually be going over the limit even when going exactly the speed limit according to your speedo.
I’ve driven 10 km/h over the speed limit with a cop going the other way, and never been fined for speeding up to 10km/h , but have been fined for going 15 km/h and above.

As a born and bred Australian I am so proud of the local flies . They are such attentive greeters of humans.. They work for the Fly Tourist Bureau (FTB).
Employees of the FTB are literally everywhere. We have pulled into a parking bay on a remote highway and within 5 seconds an FTB will be greeting us. Sometimes there will be dozens.
Three years ago my sister and I travelled to Karajini National Park on holiday. During daylight we each had a personal retinue of over 109 flies. We ate lunch in vehicle. Tea was not served until the sun has set. We ate fly free at Twilight.
Seriously Australian flies are at the very least world class in terms of annoyance and persistence..

Thank you for a very balanced commentary. You nailed it on all points covered. The flies are worse in some parts of Australia than others. Especially the little black bush flies encountered west of the ranges and sometimes in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Sydney and Brisbane don't normally have a problem with them nor the entire coastal plain all the way to Cooktown. But as soon as you go inland they are a huge problem without decent insecticide. Rid, Aerogard, Bushmans etc. Melbourne has plastic strips at the entrance to every store and delicatessen to dissuade flies following their customers or food scents inside. Seems to work for the most part.

Re not being allowed to turn left on red light, there are some intersections where you can turn left on red.
However, one intersection near me in Prospect/Blacktown became ‘Turn Left on Red Light’ for about a year, and then went back to a red arrow instead. The intersection was at a small street with a 50 kmh limit turning onto a main road with a speed limit of 80 kmh. I think the slow turning traffic created a very likely collision risk with fast moving traffic on the highway. I was always cautious and ensured that there was a big gap for me to turn left between cars on the main highway but I saw many cars just turn in front of cars going through the intersection at full speed.
I think recently turned left at a Turn Left on Red sign at a quiet intersection somewhere in Western Sydney. I was surprised because I thought they had all been removed.
Regarding the hatred for speed cameras, in most cases your speedometer is calibrated low most times two three or more. So if you get pinged by a camera and they allow up to three k over you will most likely be doing five six or more over.

The average price today (6/1/22) of fuel in the US is AU$1.35/litre, so all in all not that huge a difference. Plus when he was here he was getting a fantastic exchange rate from $US to $AU so in reality he had nothing to whinge about.
We pay 40cents in taxes with every litre of petrol (not gas) which goes towards building and maintaining roads.

The average Aussie driver starts slowing down when they see a Speed Limit Sign. That tends to help. I get where Your coming from with Motorbike Helmets. I live in The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland it's up a Mountain Range behind. You'll find Rainforests, Waterfalls and Rolling Green Hills with much Cooler Temperatures than the coast. It's wonderful for growing a wide variety of and is Dairy Farming Country. Back to My story a few years back a Young Man I've known since He was a Kid had a Major Accident. Life was pretty good to Him. He liked His work and Happily Married to His Wife and devoted Dad to a 3 year old Daughter. He was living in a town about a Mountain Range. One night He decided to hop on His Motorbike and go for a ride. It all started when a Cow escaped it paddock. He tried slowing down but didn't make it. He killed the Cow and wrecked His Motorbike. While laying in the road a Lady Ran Over Him. She then backed over Him including across His Groin. She thought She'd hit a Kangaroo and went to get Her Husband to Help. Upon Her return She discovered the awful truth. News Reporters were saying He would probably die at the time. Thank goodness that He was wearing His Helmet, because pretty much every other bone in His body was broken. But thanks to Modern Medicine with all of those Rods, Plates and Screws. He's back on His feet and living His life again. He and His Loving Wife who stuck by Him have even had 2 more Kids. I was talking to them when She was Pregnant with their last baby. I said "If any Father had the right to give that "Look What I Did!" look. It was Him."
In most “outback” areas and even small country towns you are forced to pay near to the pump.

In NSW Speed cameras have a warning speed camera ahead. And everyone just slows down at that section.
With sauce and refills, we don't tip here which I think would make the meal cost even more.
Pay at the Pump started to be introduced in Aus but they basically remained unused. I guess the decision was not to spend money on a system that was ignored.
Also I have a friend that always says no ice when buys a drink and the staff just comply.
Mobil Petrol stations introduced it in the late 90’s and I think they phased it out by 2005. Think of the extra expense a serve has maintaining 8 eftpos terminals , as opposed to two inside. Then multiply that by the number of servo’s the operate in Australia...

@@VideosCPS I'm not surprised, I remember years ago that a couple of servos near me brought them in (have since gone again), I remember looking at it and you needed to follow the instructions closely to be able to pay at the pump. When someone is getting petrol the last thing that they want to do is have to read instructions to figure it out when you can just do what you are used to doing
I always find it odd when I go to US that I have to pay for the petrol before I pump. I want to fill the car and not sure how much it will take. And what if I pay too much and it overflows. So always have to under-estimate the cost. Also most places I go you can pay at the pump.
And yes our petrol is more expensive. So he is correct there.
I think pay at the pump was done badly here when it was introduced and it was not popular and of course if you pay at the pump you don't go inside for impulse buying of goodies.
Some Americans unfortunately don't get the fact that we have a universal healthcare system which will treat bike riders with head injuries at taxpayer expense, with full hospital care paid for. So it's perfectly reasonable to expect Governments to make safety mandates such as helmet rules which are proven to reduce head injuries.
Helmets should just be common sense
As for pay at pump, we stated to see that in Australia from the late 1980s, but it never became a majority thing. By the early 21st century, they actually started removing many of the ones they already had. Just remember, Aussie business owners are very adverse to extra costs (ie penny pinching a-holes), so the upkeep and replacement costs were considered too much too bare. Locally in my town, the one pay at pump place shut them down and replaced it with a pay on your phone app, which is totally awesome and should become the norm everywhere.
I'm an Australian who lived in SE Asia for eight years. I'm from the south coast of NSW. I can tell you, the sun can be brutal here in Summer. Wear a hat and slap on sun screen.
It is not widespread but I have come across areas when you can turn left when the light is red. Normally there is a sign saying this is permissible (Coffs Harbour and Brisbane for example).
Nearly every camera has a sign stating that the camera is coming up, how hard is that? Cameras are in city areas. I do a five hour drive from Eden to Shellharbour regularly, it has one camera.
There are a couple of the pay at pump stations. I have only seen a couple up here in Queensland.
Fact is Australia has plenty of oil but it is mostly left in the ground. The problem is that most of the refineries are closing down which will become a national security issue.
Actually Australia does have it's own oil, but most is sent (sold) to Asia for processing. Two things here. 1. The mining corporation makes money on the sale, and 2. The government has no problem justifying Import Parity Pricing for petroleum (a problem it had when most was refined within Australia). There are other aspects to petrol pricing, but mainly these are it.

remember that Australian vehicle standards only require that speedo's are accurate to within 10% so any ticket for less than that is not valid IE: 60=66 kmh 67kmh is enforceable and a ticket could be issued
Actually, harsh sunlight in Australia is due to the location of the country on the hemisphere and the elliptical orbit of the planet. So in Victoria, you step outside in the height of summer, say at midday, and burn quickly. Same temperature same time in Queensland. You get a bit hot.
For the five year olds out there. Take a basketball and draw a line for the equator and the map of Australia. Take a torch, call it the sun and point it at the ball. Aiming at the equator. See the way the light hits the ball? See how sharp the angle of the light gets. The further from the equator you get? That is why the sunlight is more severe on high uv days. The thinning ozone doesn't help, of course. If he moved more north and did better research. Tristran would... nah he'd still claim America does it better.

A lot of drinks are actually bottled in Australia, so import costs are not the reason the prices are high, taxes are to blame, but they are there to deter you from drinking and smoking. We hate it too.
When it comes petrol stations that you can pay at the pump, I just don't think you are looking hard enough.
The reason we have traffic lights at all is for safety, intersections where, perhaps, there is a high accident rate. We do, as you mentioned, have TURN LEFT ON RED LIGHT where there there is often light traffic on the cross road at some times. Its a safety issue. I learnt the US rue when I got honked at an intersection in New York City. I soon learnt that you follow the road rules for the place yr in !!
You can actually turn left on a red light in some places in Australia. It will have a sign saying, 'Left turn on red permitted after stopping'. I've seen them in Qld, NSW and SA. I'm not sure about other states/territories.
With the red light thing, alot of the time it gives time for people to cross the roads safely. Instead of vehicles hitting them. The red light for cars gives enough time for safety.
Turning on red you have to give way to pedestrians anyway

Plus you do realise that pedestrians could only legally Criss the road the person turning on red is leaving. They should t be crossing the road with the green light.

You pay before you fill at Cosco.
Most Petrol Stations charge you what you fill when you go to the office to pay.
You need to get outside Sydney.
Since primary school, kids are taught to slip, slop, slap, that is: slip on sun protective clothing, slop on water resistant, broad spectrum, SPF30 or higher sunscreen and slap on a broad-brimmed hat. Its innate in many of us now. However there are always people that want to learn the hard way.
Are the refills and condiments free or are they included in the price in anticitated of there being asked for. If this is so and you do not take them, are you being overcharged for the meal ?

You can turn on a red light when there is a sign that says you can in New South Wales. He is in QLD and they don’t have that option there….but then again Queensland traffic is not that bad most of the time.
i don't know if the petrol station thing is rare, i see it around quite a lot. but i am aware that it is limited, in the sense that, if you want to pay for your petrol at the pump, you can only do so in fixed amounts, like $10 or $20, and it is pre-paid. i think lots of people just aren't looking for it, so we forget that it is there.
also, haha, i know the speed camera thing can be quite unconvincing but there is a window of about 2-3 km/h above the limit you can go. and it seems pretty small but if it got raised to 5 km/h over the speed limit before people got caught, drivers are going to start pushing the new limit instead, knowing they can go 5 km/h above without penalty, and then the original speed limit becomes pointless, to an extent. but, i do think an associated problem is that the speed limits themselves change too many times on a single stretch of road! :P
Ampol and BP have an app for your phone which allows you to pay at the pump and as much as you like. Haven't tried any of the other companies
Quix service stations used to have pay at the pump, and it was great, but them 7/11 bought out quix and removed all the pay at the pump bowsers and now we have to go inside so we can spend more money buying junk food we don’t need. And I still haven’t had a 7/11 coffee since they changed to paper lids, yuk.
Slip! Slop! Slap! Check out Sid the seagull ad from the 1980s. We don’t call them gas stations we call them service stations or servos. There are some areas around Sydney where you can turn left even when the light is red. You’ll see the black and white signs that say ‘Turn Left At Any Time With Care’.
As for paying for gas, there are 3 options, Pay After, Pay at the pump, Pay before. With the higher petrol prices the incidence of theft increases so more stations will introduce Pre Pay, there are a few, at the stations I frequent, that you can pay at the pump. Try COCO for example, They must be not far from you) they must have 50 bowsers where you put yr card in first.
I'm an Aussie. Agree with him on pay at pump, turn left on red, speed cameras, flies (but used to them of course). Free condiments means lower wages for wait staff, kitchen hands etc. Pay for things like condiments and drink refills or pay tips, you pay either way. Same for bar staff. It's not rocket science.
I have to admit I watched most of Tristan's videos while he was here - I'm always interested to see the persepctives of visitors/newcomers to Australia (same reason I'm here right now I guess).
He was generally pretty (or indeed VERY) positive in the other videos. This was an attempt to correct the the balance, and to be honest he was scrounging for material.
I also watched most or all of them. I agree that he was hunting for material. He overcompensated, imo.

It’s really easy not to get a speeding fine, don’t speed. The speed limit is just that, a limit, it’s not meant to be the speed you drive at it’s supposed to be the maximum safe speed. They could increase the tolerance but the way they would do that is by cutting the speed limit.

Petrol stations used to have staff that pumped petrol and you could at at the pump but they stopped that you mainly pay inside because it stopped people running out and not paying. Speed cameras are a bit of a pain but most modern cars have cruise control and you can set them. Free refills or condiments in regular cafes or restaurants might seem like a pain but they actually pay for staff so they don’t expect tips. Riding a motorcycle it’s illegal to not wear a helmet, jacket and pants, closed in shoes. As a motorcycle rider you are way more likely to get seriously injured if you hit a kangaroo or are involved in an accident, the gear will save your life the same as riding a push bike most major state will have specific lanes for push bikes but if you don’t value your head then it’s a concern
Condiments used to be free but changes to food safety rules requiring individual portioning changed that.
We have plenty of “Turn left with care’ traffic light intersections in cities.
Speed, you get a ticket. 🤷♀️. If they don’t send fines for ‘slightly over the limit’ then everyone will drive at limit +5km.
Condiment packs are not free. The business has to pay for those little condiment individual packs. I’ve seen people helping themselves to heaps of packs of condiments unnecessarily, and probably throwing them out. If they add sauce from a squeeze bottle then you generally get it free.
I remember as a kid seeing a local 'turn left with care' sign where someone had obliterated the final E so it read 'turn left with car'
It amused my primary school self to no ends every time I saw it.
If you see a sign that says 80kph, that is the MAXIMUM speed allowed! If you are concerned about accidently exceeding 80kph by 3kph then drive at 75kph. You will arrive at your destination
30 seconds later but you will definitely not receive a fine!

Wearing a motorbike helmet saved my SIL from serious injury years ago just after helmets became compulsory.

As for a lack of pay at the pump fueling stations, most of those to switched off so the customers may buy extra stuff like crap snack foods and sugar laden drinks at the till.
As for the helmet requirements in Oz, that came about because of the unhelmeted motorcycle riders ending up dead or in the brain damaged parts of hospitals and eventually sent to a respite home where they are sent to die. As for helmet laws, depending on the state, everybody must wear a helmet riding a bicycle, a skate board, roller skates, scooter, etc.

I'm an Aussie who has watched all of Tristan's vlogs. He LOVES Australia! I bet he is kicking himself for using the "hate" word. Then again that may have been clever, as it looks like he got more viewers because of it , though I bet he's glad he is now out of the country.

Aussie who has been to the US three times. I've seen lots of Tristan's videos including the one reviewed here. Not being able to turn left on a red light is super annoying, as is not being able to do a U turn at lights. Not giving away stuff for free is partly how restaurants and cafes can pay their workers a living wage. No tips required. I have been fined for not wearing a helmet on a bicycle. Annoying at the time 25 years ago but I can see the sense in it. I've ridden motorbikes in Colorado and South Dakota, both helmet-free states and I wore a helmet all the time. High taxes on tobacco and alcohol helps pay for the medical system here. You know, the one that won't send you broke. If Tristan were a citizen and allowed to ride a bike with no helmet and he cracked his head on the pavement, he'd be glad tobacco and alcohol are so heavily taxed because his treatment would be free (or close to it). The flies here are really annoying, there's no denying it. Driving - there are limits on everything. If he wants to be able to speed by the 10 mph that's accepted in the US, then it must be OK to be a little over the BAC limit too. Imagine a driver who is a little over the BAC limit but that's OK, speeding a little but that's OK too, hitting Tristan on his bicycle while he's not wearing a helmet as that's also OK. Reasons to hate Australia.

Regarding the sun, I watched one of the GWS trainers put sunscreen on Toby Green the other day. This was for an afternoon game with limited sun exposure, but it was smart. I did wonder at first why he need help, but it occurred to me that footy players probably don't want sunscreen all over their hands during a game.
