This is been my home park for years. I thought i305 would’ve changed it for the better when it first came out, I had no idea kings dominion would lose so much traction over the years! I remember when it used to be booming, and now with volcano gone, it just feel sad and a little bit neglected. The biggest thing that this is taught me, that it doesn’t matter how success or big a park, it can always fall apart. I do think they’re trying to build it back up, but I think they’re just taking their sweet time because of the huge debt they had to pay with i305. I don’t think all hope is lost yet, I just think they’re taking their time building new attractions so they don’t go in debt again.
I would argue that Kings Dominion is actually well looked after. And this is coming from someone who has Carowinds as their home park. Cedar Fair puts a lot of effort into the overall atmosphere, from the landscaping, to the lighting package, to special events such as Grand Carnivale and WinterFest. They've been making investments in things that best cater to their overall clientele, which at the end of the day is not coaster enthusiasts, but rather, parents with children. I had the pleasure of visiting KD for the first time this year and was very impressed with the park overall. But then again, though I am a coaster enthusiast, when I rank parks I don't focus exclusively on rides but really on the overall experience, which is why I rank Dollywood over Cedar Point, despite Cedar Point having a better ride lineup.
Coming from someone who's home oark is kings dominion I would say that too I think though that cedar fair may be scared to invest because sometimes bgw can be unpredictable with what they Come out with, furthermore I've been to bother KD and BGW and BGW in my opinion was a close second. I will say I heard rumors of some RMC coaster replacing the volcano and what's good is that the oark has been getting a lot more guests as of recent. I also think that when the anaconda gets torn down there will likely be a some sort of extremely unique coaster because if you look at KD spending it almost looks like they're saving up for some thing either way I recommend KD if anyone wants to go there it's amazing and for a ride I'd recommend there I'd say that while the I 305 is better the flight of fear is often overlooked and is my personal favorite it's teeming is just amazing
You’re looking way too much into that artwork. It was generic and used at multiple parks around that time, so it was more meant to represent the kinds of rides CF was building, instead of any one specific park or ride lineup.
As someone whose home parks are BGW and KD, I think the one major thing that will keep KD from ever being in the bottom tier with MG, WoF, Dorney, and Vallyfair is that it Isn't in the middle of no where. KD is close to Richmond and it will naturally have more people coming to the park than the ones in the bottom tier. I think Cedar Fair recognized this, and decided to go more conservative with KD. While we haven't gotten many major investments, Cedar Fair has taken really good care of KD. We got Twisted Timbers,They completely revamped the section where Twisted is, They've removed unpopular rides, We got Winterfest, and the Grand Carnival, We have track for an S&S free spin, Coconut Shores, and lots of general park improvements. I honestly doubt KD will become a priority park for Cedar Fair like KI or Carowinds, but Kings Dominion is no where near a lost cause.
You are right, Cedar Fair stated in their conference calls in 2019 that all their parks did well, so that includes KD. Did it do as well as the top 4 in the chain? No, but attendance was still up. They had a winter type event for KD, that takes time and money for Cedar Fair to work on, so they haven't forgot them at all, just a myth.

I’d honestly say KD and SFGAD are actually like inter-chain sisters. So maybe cousins. They both have one mind blowing intense coaster, followed by one new rmc and a freespin added between a spot of barely any editions. They both have lots of potential for being close to lots of major metro areas and having some great headline coasters in front, but with KD removing more than they are adding, El Toros incident combined with minor accidents here and there, they both are going to need a little time before they become a wow. These + the Sea World Parks can hopefully twist their issues within the next 1-3 years or so and be true headline parks for these major metro areas. SFMM CP and KI are truly the biggest and baddest places right now, but I think CP is the only one to have a true headline top 10 class ride with SV, and that’s why we need these specific parks to rise with what’s sitting there.
SFGAD is almost at it’s peak potential, you act like they don’t have a pretty good hyper, 4 other solid b&ms and the tallest coaster in the world. Meanwhile Kings Dominion has 3 good coasters and the rest leave you with headaches

The green coaster was the shockwave, it was a stand-up coaster that was removed shortly after the art was made, the drop tower has the wrong design. As for the other coasters you have a point on. Saying kd will plummet and become a bottom tier park is a bit of a stretch. Their 1 2 punch is to good and they only need a good volcano replacement and maybe one more good investment after that to get back on top if you think about it.
Universal and Disney aren't actually that much in competition with each other. Both their annual attendance vastly outstrips the population of the Orlando area, meaning that most visitors are tourist. And if people are willing to pay for a vacation in Orlando to visit one of the parks, they quite often throw the other in as well, because why not? And I think that with that competition with BGW, KD would be an excellent choice for the first new generation Vekoma. Just imagine if they answered Pantheon with something like Abyssus.
On top of that, Universal and Disney are focused on different demographics. Disney is primarily a family-focused park, with lots of low-intensity rides and an immersive experience, while Universal is more of a conventional amusement park, albeit heavily themed, with a lot of big thrill rides.
@@MillenniumForceMan Agreed, at least one of the two best. I305 is the only thing that is close to SV IMO and TwiTim is the 2nd best RMC (above LRod) IMO. Getting Fury in a couple days and El Toro as soon as its reopened (canceled our trip once it went down). KD and CP have essentially the opposite same top 2. CP with the big RMC and small intense Intamin that punches way above its weight and KD with the big intense Intamin and smaller RMC that punches way above it weight. It's 1a and 1b top 2's for me.
I commented something similar on another video about KD, but it's really pretty common for Cedar Fair parks to have 2-4 really amazing coasters, and a bunch of decent/okay/bad supporting coasters. This is definitely the case with Carrowinds, Canada's Wonderland, CGA, and even arguably Knott's (although that one's kind of got a different vibe). I don't think Cedar Fair considers KD to be a failure, they're probably not adding a ton of rides to it because they don't think it desperately needs new rides right now. In fact it almost seems like they were catching Carowinds up to KD. Also despite what enthusiasts seem to believe, I don't think BGW necessarily blows KD out of the water in most people's eyes. I recently went to both parks for the first time with a group of (mostly GP) friends and almost all of them preferred KD's rides.
I think that Kings Dominion has more potential than Canada‘s Wonderland because it land and they don’t need to clean it up as much as Canada‘s Wonderland needs to be. Also Mystic Timbers was definitely made for Kings island it fits the terrain perfectly but I’d way rather have Kings dominion be a top-tier than Canada’s Wonderland
Wait they got rid of Volcano???? God that ride was so fun. I-305 is fun too but the last time I went to KD was in 2016 so I had no idea. Man that sucks!
"This inversion right here looks pretty similar to the one on Maxx Force" Come on man, have you been to SFGAm? The Dog-tongue element is wonky and looks Nothing like that. That purple inversion is just a vertical loop 🤦🏻♂️
The biggest element is competition. KD is so close to BGW and SFA. While the DC metro is a big area, it's fairly saturated with parks. Charlotte, one of the faster growing US cities, has little competition so it makes sense to spend the dollars there. They only have so much of a budget to work with each year as a chain.
I don’t see how Bush Gardens being in direct competition with Kings Dominion means that they can’t get hypers or any of those other coasters. Like if they’re competition, you should be trying to one up them constantly. Not sit back and let them build a bunch of cool stuff and do nothing about it.
I really don't think KD is gonna be a "Dead Park". All the other parks you listed have the problems of a limited market to cater to and/or are competing with major parks like Cedar Point, Six Flags Great Adventure, or even Hersheypark. KD certainly has the market and it also has major attractions to make it stand out from its regional competition in Busch Gardens WILLIAMSBURG. It just needs that extra push from Cedar Fair.
I have a season pass at Kings Dominion this year for the first time in over a decade and I'm loving perhaps especially because lines are 5-10 mins at the most. It's always pretty busy, but not 1-2 hour lines like when I grew up at KD busy.
I noticed a few things that are wrong, first off the gci coaster in the concept art doesn't exist anymore, it was called "Hurler" it was closed to make way for twisted timbers in 2015, second the green and blue "b&m" track was "Shock Wave" a standing ride made by TOGO that was relocated in 2015 to make room for delirium, and third, the purple track in the back of the picture was a ride called "King Kobra" the was relocated in 1986.
I’ve been on every ride at KD except Twisted Timbers and I can’t convince drive all the way down there to ride intimidator x5 and Twisted Timbers. Especially when i have never been to Hershey park and its the same distance away as KD.
I’m telling you you are working the algorithm so we’ll when you put your music in your description. I swear it was the only reason it came into my feed. Started out with the shortening waiting in lines video and now I’ve been hooked lol.
U should be happy u have the best coaster in the world and another world class coaster at ur home park, all my home park has is a prototype intamin hyper
I wouldn't say it's a meh park, it has a very nice atmosphere and three amazing coasters (I305, Twisted Timbers, Dominator). Want to see a meh park? Drive up to Maryland and see SFA
@@gamr5055 Was that comfirmed by the park, or is that just what makes the most sense looking at the linup from the enthusiast perspective? Because the business perspective is very different whether we like it or not.
@@urbex_coasters no but why would they remove the crypt if it was the volcano replacement there’s to much space back there it doesn’t make logical sense.
@@jad3760 Because parts for The Crypt are hard to acquire these days. The freespin was planned before The Crypt was removed. My theory is Cedar Fair was offered one for basically free with planning either an axis or Ejinika clone for Cedar Point, when Kings Dominion needed an emergency coaster they got the freespin.
I'm a Busch gardens fan by heart to me comparing the two is impossible. Although KD has more rides, Busch gardens is attention to detail, entertainers, scenery, and rides are much more interesting than KD, even if they aren't the most thrilling compared to cedar and six flags parks, it feels like they care more about the experiences in their Park than just the rides
I went to KD a lot as a kid and honestly once they got rid of volcano i never really had the desire to go back. It was the only kind of coaster i couldnt really get at Carowinds
Even though KD has more coasters, BGW is the better park in my opinion, because the coasters and rides there are all really nice and it has great scenery
KD is one of Cedar Fair's crown jewels my man. It's literally an hour away from 6 of the 10 richest counties in the U.S. and literally sits in the Richmond-DC-Baltimore megalopolis.
Unrelated, but I have a hypothesis that the feeling I got when I rode El Loco at Adventuredome 7 years ago (the almost falling out of my seat feeling during the inversions which is what made my not ride coasters with lap bars and inversions) is just airtime, but upside down, since you get several negative G’s when undergoing ejector airtime but only one positive G when hanging upside down. Is that true?
Kings Dominion will not be falling into the lowest tier anytime soon. Unlike the smallest parks (Michigan's Adventure, Valleyfair, Worlds of Fun, Dorney), the park does get good investments, however they come a lot less frequently than the largest parks.
Love the video. Keep up the great work. My note is that you talked about this concept art a ton but didn't make it clear where it was from or why it was significant other that something about cedar fair buying the park. Also would like a wish list/speculation for new standout addition. Like please cedar fair give us a gravity group shuttle, won't break the budget but will keep this park feeling fresh and not be a filler coaster. Thanks for the video I like the 0% is not fact bit video blur thing
I grew up going to Kings Dominion. Back then you went in fully aware there was a good chance of not coming out alive. Nearly every ride was super sketchy. Anyone remember riding Rebel Yell? Backwards on a fucking wooden coaster.
5:56 us in the uk have been waiting for nearnly 10 years fir an new coaster at tp and we still have nothing, like yes the park isnt loved enough by cedar fair, but just look at how merlin treats thorpe, its even worse
The investment they made for I-305 ruined the park. As someone who has had KD as their home park for 17 years... I love the ride, but in a certain way, I hate it. Ever since I-305 flopped so hard with the GP, Cedar Fair was hesitant to make any big investments into the park again. KD was known as the "Volcano" park for so many years even AFTER I-305... and then when they took out Volcano, I know several people who literally told me "oh, they took out Volcano? Well, guess I'm not going back to that park again!" You hit the nail right on the head: it's truly tragic. The crazy thing was that BGW was getting their asses KICKED by KD until I-305 happened. Everyone at my school thought of KD as the "cool" park with all the craziest rides, and thought of BGW as the "family" park that had a few coasters but was more boring. But Verbolten was a smash hit and I-305 was a total flop... and the rest is history.

Saying kd will plummet and become a bottom tier park is a bit of a stretch. Their 1 2 punch is to good and they only need a good volcano replacement and maybe one more good investment after that to get back on top if you think about it.
Yea this park has tons of potential it just needs the right investments. I mean it has DC and Richmond near it to cities that are both growing
1:38 I wish BGT had a B&M hyper.
Thankfully we have Mako! 😄
y’all could have a b&m giga instead tbh
Intimidator 305 is soooooo intense
Good video, but I305 screwed this park. The attendance is wayyy too low to get any investment so their pretty much screwed like you said
But at least they ended up with the best coaster on the planet
No idea what this guy is talking about but I still found the video really interesting. Keep up the good work bro:)
Come to Busch Gardens Tampa in Williamsburg VA
Wait they got rid of Volcano????
God that ride was so fun.
I-305 is fun too but the last time I went to KD was in 2016 so I had no idea. Man that sucks!
yeah they got rid of it like 2 years ago and didn't really make a big deal out of it
When I’m in VA, it’s always BGW over Kings Dominion, but I still respect the park and I-305 and twisted timbers which I haven’t rode yet
"This inversion right here looks pretty similar to the one on Maxx Force"
Come on man, have you been to SFGAm? The Dog-tongue element is wonky and looks Nothing like that. That purple inversion is just a vertical loop 🤦🏻♂️
The biggest element is competition. KD is so close to BGW and SFA. While the DC metro is a big area, it's fairly saturated with parks. Charlotte, one of the faster growing US cities, has little competition so it makes sense to spend the dollars there. They only have so much of a budget to work with each year as a chain.
I think that green coaster was supposed to represent ShockWave when it was at the park.
I don’t see how Bush Gardens being in direct competition with Kings Dominion means that they can’t get hypers or any of those other coasters. Like if they’re competition, you should be trying to one up them constantly. Not sit back and let them build a bunch of cool stuff and do nothing about it.
You mean BGW right?
I really don't think KD is gonna be a "Dead Park". All the other parks you listed have the problems of a limited market to cater to and/or are competing with major parks like Cedar Point, Six Flags Great Adventure, or even Hersheypark.
KD certainly has the market and it also has major attractions to make it stand out from its regional competition in Busch Gardens WILLIAMSBURG. It just needs that extra push from Cedar Fair.
This is probably your most interesting video topic yet.
Flight of fear and backlot stunt coaster watching this: 👀🤔👀
I remember you from when you were at like 3k subs, I know it's a little late but congrats on 10k my dude!
KD is my home park but I prefer BGW so much more that I usually drive the extra hour to it. I305 is the best coaster at either park tho imo
Kevin Durant moment made me yell HA. Needed that thank you loooooooooooooooooooooooool.
I have a season pass at Kings Dominion this year for the first time in over a decade and I'm loving perhaps especially because lines are 5-10 mins at the most. It's always pretty busy, but not 1-2 hour lines like when I grew up at KD busy.
3:05 i think that is an RMC because it just looks like iron gwazi but thats me best guess
Most underrated UA-camr out there I be watching your videos to fall asleep every night keep it up bro
That’s not in a bad way btw they don’t like put me to sleep 😅
I like Kings Dominion more than Carowinds, it has better atmosphere and is prettier
I totally agree. KD is much more of a mature park IMO. KD has well shaded sections, and an actual atmosphere (like you said).
Also they have the Joe Cool Driving School which is like the best kiddie ride ever
I love kings dominion
I’ve been on every ride at KD except Twisted Timbers and I can’t convince drive all the way down there to ride intimidator x5 and Twisted Timbers. Especially when i have never been to Hershey park and its the same distance away as KD.
Is the music at 3:50 Costa Rica instrumental from the dreamville album? If so… great taste
I’m telling you you are working the algorithm so we’ll when you put your music in your description. I swear it was the only reason it came into my feed. Started out with the shortening waiting in lines video and now I’ve been hooked lol.
I really wished all of that happened, but instead we got passed up and got turned into a meh park. *I’m crying rn since KD is my home park*
I've got bad news for you: the freespin is the Volcano replacement. The GP still see them as something amazing, like nothing they've ever seen
Actually, the free spin is replacing the Crypt
@@gamr5055 Was that comfirmed by the park, or is that just what makes the most sense looking at the linup from the enthusiast perspective? Because the business perspective is very different whether we like it or not.
@@urbex_coasters no but why would they remove the crypt if it was the volcano replacement there’s to much space back there it doesn’t make logical sense.
@@urbex_coasters The boxes that are teasing the ride are where the Crypt was, and they reference Tomb Raider the ride.
@@jad3760 Because parts for The Crypt are hard to acquire these days. The freespin was planned before The Crypt was removed. My theory is Cedar Fair was offered one for basically free with planning either an axis or Ejinika clone for Cedar Point, when Kings Dominion needed an emergency coaster they got the freespin.
you have one of the most consistent upload schedule of any youtuber, period
Just found your channel out and It's awesome I love the humor and the simple but great quality of the videos keep it up!
Pantheon hurry up and open😔
this guy is the single most entitled coaster enthusiast on the planet
thx
I'm always so glad whenever Coastoons uploads, his videos always are awesome!
It makes sense why u want to go to KD they have the best coaster itw
I went to KD a lot as a kid and honestly once they got rid of volcano i never really had the desire to go back. It was the only kind of coaster i couldnt really get at Carowinds
Man is loading up on caffeine, he’s talking like a machine gun
It's no longer a sad story now!🥳
Rapterra looks fun.
Kings dominion was my home park growing up, this is just sad especially when seeing the potential it had
Even though KD has more coasters, BGW is the better park in my opinion, because the coasters and rides there are all really nice and it has great scenery
3:42 flight of fear and backlot stunt coaster both are launch coasters
You know you’re in some tough shit if they’re more concerned about replacing one of KI’s *supporting* coasters faster than your main coaster
I went in with high expectations for twisted timber’s but kinda got disappointed
Why? You must hate airtime then, because TT is loaded with it
Well it was my first rmc and everyone was hyping it up and the over bank was just there but the airtime was great
I only ride every parks 1-2 punch so KD is easily in my top 5
"I know Apollo's Chariot is just down the way, but do I care?" (Jeopardy music) "No" - Airtime Thrills 2021
KD is one of Cedar Fair's crown jewels my man. It's literally an hour away from 6 of the 10 richest counties in the U.S. and literally sits in the Richmond-DC-Baltimore megalopolis.
Yooo can we get a tracklist from this video? That background music hittin
They have 2 launch coasters at kings dominion
Didn't realize how little I knew about this stuff, a lot of that just flew right over my head haha
This the park I have gone to the most
Unrelated, but I have a hypothesis that the feeling I got when I rode El Loco at Adventuredome 7 years ago (the almost falling out of my seat feeling during the inversions which is what made my not ride coasters with lap bars and inversions) is just airtime, but upside down, since you get several negative G’s when undergoing ejector airtime but only one positive G when hanging upside down. Is that true?
It’s similar to airtime, but it’s called “hang time” when you’re upside down.
@@katelyng1019
Are there any differences other than the name and the rider position?
Edit: nevermind, I still don’t feel comfortable
I feel like the green one might have been shockwave but it also has b & m track
That purple coaster looked like old Vekoma or Arrow track 🤌🏽
This man don’t miss, he’s got dreamville in the background ground 😫
Are you sure the green coaster might be Dominator with a different color scheme (like they didn't know what the colors would be)
What song did u use in the intro
Not me working at a park that you called “bottom tier, the dead parks”
Cedar Fair released concept art for all their parks a while ago and this was kd's
I grew up going to Kings Dominion. Back then you went in fully aware there was a good chance of not coming out alive. Nearly every ride was super sketchy. Anyone remember riding Rebel Yell? Backwards on a fucking wooden coaster.
The purple coaster's large inversion looks sort of like the loop and top hat combo on Full Throttle, so it could be a Premier Sky Rocket III.
5:56 us in the uk have been waiting for nearnly 10 years fir an new coaster at tp and we still have nothing, like yes the park isnt loved enough by cedar fair, but just look at how merlin treats thorpe, its even worse
Who gives a shit about TP when Merlin have so horrifically underinvested in Alton over the years?
I loved this video format, can you do this for my hp, cga?
The investment they made for I-305 ruined the park. As someone who has had KD as their home park for 17 years... I love the ride, but in a certain way, I hate it. Ever since I-305 flopped so hard with the GP, Cedar Fair was hesitant to make any big investments into the park again. KD was known as the "Volcano" park for so many years even AFTER I-305... and then when they took out Volcano, I know several people who literally told me "oh, they took out Volcano? Well, guess I'm not going back to that park again!"
You hit the nail right on the head: it's truly tragic.
Wow this video got recommended while I’m on my way to work there
