  • Magic comes in all shapes and sizes and this one's got a bad rap for no real reason, honestly. Necromancy is fine. Everybody loves necromancy. Right? Right. Let's go with that.

@@koteghe7600 the lord of the rings. when Gimli offers his help to Frodo he uses "you have my axe!" since it sounds more badass than "I want to go too". Legolas, not wanting the dwarf to best him, replied in a similar way by saing "and my bow!"
he made a parody of that scene by adding the necromancer "and your brother!" since what he wants to do is avenge the death of said brother.
I saw a similar joke once. the judge asks "do you have any witness?" and the lawyer answers with "yes. I call for the victim" raising the victim as a witness.
lets be real. having necromantic skills helps a lot to lawyers or the police.

But Voodoo, or Vodun, zombies are not literaly corpses or skeletons. A Voodoo/Vodun zombie is a person that lost their soul to the priest that cast the curse upon them. They are enslaved, mindless husks but their bodies are still very much alive. Perhaps you should look into that and add that as a part 2?
Also, I think one of the main reasons why we see necromancy as raising corpses is Tolkien. LOTR has inspired generations since its first release, and Frodo and friends meet the Barrow Wights in the Barrow Downs. Walking corpses, skeletons, the dead of once proud Numenorian decent enslaved by the Witch King. I would say that is where many (even D&D) had the idea from.

I'm now remembering "Judgement Day" which was a Judge Dredd story in 2000AD when I was younger which was a pretty good read. In that one a Necromancer calling himself Sabbat the Necromagus raised every single corpse on the planet to create his army, killing over 3 billion people in the process.
There's also the "All That Remains" quest in Dragon Age 2 where the Necromancer was killing women with features similar to his dead wife so he cut use the appropriate bits to try and rebuild her body so he could resurect her.
And you've already covered Koudelka, so no need to go into detail there...
Necromancers have gained a pretty bad rep over the years, but at least they've give us some really interesting stories :)

The first act of necromancy are far older than you think. It was first practiced and "created" in ancient India. They use occult ,tantric, yogic practices to gain siddhis. One of the siddhis is necromancy . It predates several thousand years before your first mention. Yogic energy is magic. It predates Judaism and cananite religions in history. These practices were started in pre-vedic time. The source of these practices were in ancient Vedic traditions. Necromancy is/was a regular thing in vedic traditions which predates any known European traditions. Even before the Yamnya invasion in Europe. Believe it or not. These vedic practices are still followed in Asia. Magic was not originally created in Europe. The reason why roman, Greek, norse religions have similarities is because they are the local manifestation of ancient Vedic religion/traditions. Thor,Jupiter,Zeus came from the ancient major deity of Vedic times. Norse,Greek, roman pantheons are nothing but the local manifestation of vedic traditions. A little secret...Most Hindus practice necromancy aka calling upon the parents spirit on their death anniversary. They place their parents favourite food in a room --> call upon the parents spirit--> they leave the parents spirit and their favourite food in a locked room. After sometime they enter the room and the spirit will be gone. Some other Hindus would do rituals and place food on their terrace. Their dead loved one will come in the form of a crow and eat the food and leave. Still practiced to this day.

The funny party is the Catholic church openly prays to saints who are merely dead people for protection and guidance... which isn't in the bible. In the old testament if you prayed to anybody but God you'd be struck down, and in the new testament the only person Jesus prays to is God. The Catholic church also integrated a lot of pagan holidays and traditions into the church to make converting people easier so I guess some practices are just more acceptable than others.

definitely in Finland necromancy was just a thing that one does. but it was not pretty exactly, considering the dead would not return as spirits, but the corpse it self would rise up from the grave.
or one could ask help from the multitude of the lesser gods of death, decay, pain, diseases, and other nightmares, or from the darkness it self and his wife who gave birth to these lesser gods.
despite people living relatively normally in the underworld, it is not described as a fun place. some old poem describes it having oceans of blood and hanging corpses of beasts from which demons feast.
located beyond a black river which rapids were made of swords, and on which the bloody son of death guards the gates of the underworld, catching any fleeing souls in its iron nets and beating any living thing trying to enter into pieces with its burning sword.
it seems so absurdly over the top but I suppose this is what people believed before christianity showed up on these shores.
its like they fed deathcore to an AI and told it to come up with a religion.

However I also like the idea of cultures and people becoming much more comfortable and accepting of death. It's not a dark or bad thing, just a thing. Death is necessary for life to be.

Methinks most fantasy settings don't get undeath and necromancy "right." (Well, right for me anyway.)
The undead have been so overused as mindless, evil and easily disposable fodder and necromancers as stereotypical cackling villains that it's hard to appreciate how equally nuanced and terrifying the whole concept is supposed to be.
For example, what if the undead like skeletons moved like the weeping angels (from Dr. Who) do and could, for example, invade someone's bone structure like The Thing from a mere bone fragment, turning people into more and more twisted, corrupted skeletons with uneven bone growths like spikes, horns, extra fingers, teeth and jaws everywhere?
What if the mere presence of undead creatures or necrotic energies immediately started to absorb one's lifeforce in bulk, to a degree where fighting a "mere" skeleton without the proper methodology and tools is an automatically lost battle because it uses YOUR lifeforce to resurrect again and again, shaving years off your lifespan in mere minutes.
What if there was a traveling necromancer who just helps people that have lost loved ones suddenly to say their final goodbyes to their spirits, ir helped the victims of murder name their assailants, and were mercilessly persecuted by some "holy" inquisition?
What if a necromancer happened upon a village that has had it's crops withered dye to a bad season, and they could use their magic to revitalize the crops BUT it requires a living sacrifice?
Or a village that will soon be attacked by bandits but they have no guards or proper militia (called to war maybe), but they do have a large crypt where they have buried their dead for decades or centuries even...
Or what about someone just studying necromancy for medicinal pursuits?
There's just so much potential there.

I find myself getting into survival-ish games because of that preparedness you mention.

Extra points for using HoMM5 footage. I liked how they turned Necromancers from mustache twirling villains to people who have actual role and purpose in the game's world. Well, not in the base game, with Markal, but in the Expansion with Arantir's story. And then even more expanded their lore in HoMM6.

Necromancy and Christianity are the same. If you are practicing Animism and being killed buy Christians are also normal.

Love the channel/vid, keep up the great work! Just wanted to add a little since esoteric traditions is something I study in uni, Dee was more an alchemist than a necromancer and relied a little too much on Kelly for Enochian magic. Some of those talks are pretty funny though, like interrupting/insulting the angels and asking for the location of buried treasure while they were talking about the apocalypse. But after the whole wife swap incident, the "angels stopped taking to them" and Dee and Kelly's relationship fell apart. I'd say Dee is more famous for his Monas Hieroglyphica since he actually did that on his own before meeting Kelly. In regards to the whole sitting in a circle and holding hands, there's an interesting study done by some Canadian researchers, look up the "1972 Philip experiment" I'm personally not sure what to make of it, but might be a fun topic for a follow up video!

@@ProperBird To give you the short version, Chakan was a swordsman who got cocky and claimed he was so good even Death couldn't beat him. Death accepted the challenge and told Chakan that if he won a dual with him he would be granted immortality. Chakan won and Death made it so he couldn't die until all supernatural evil was destroyed, though he could still be injured. After about a thousand years or so Chakan is basically questing to destroy all the supernatural evil in the world so he can be rid of the curse of immortality.

@@ProperBird Spoilers from the end of the game here, but after Chakan beats the final boss he falls on his sword and asks Death to finally claim him. To quote Death's reply directly He says:
“Let me now show you the totality of your curse, Chakan.
      Look above you.
      See the countless stars above...
each surrounded by worlds like yours... Worlds thick with supernatural evils.
They are so many and so far away, and you are stuck on this mote of dust waiting to reach them...
Waiting such a long, long time...
      Waiting forever...”
So, yeah. The moral of the story is: Don't screw with Death.
This is another one of those stories that will always stick with me :)

Never understood the hate towards necromancy in many fantasy settings. Like, bringing souls back to bodies, speaking with the dead and f'ing with fate is ok, but the moment you decide to raise a zombie or two you're suddenly an antichrist and a devil incarnate. And even in cases of just the extreme definition of necromancy (meaning "necromancy is just creating zombies and talking to the dead, healing and prophecising is something different") - if the school of magic was treated fairly, the people capable of practicing necromancy would be heroes in war times. We don't want people to die? - fine, let's have an army or at least the front lines composed of decomposing corpses in armor. Oh, we're losing people? - no problem, let me raise them real quick. We've won a battle? Give me a week, we'll have a bigger army than we started with. Enemy commander died in battle? "Oi, c'mere ya lil' punk, let's have a proper chinwag".
Amonkhet comes to mind, possibly because of Liliana on the thumbnail, and not even knowing the lore well, there were cards clearly suggesting that there are other uses for dead people. From carrying crates and pots (even as the world breaks), to just using fans, acting as a guard or being a butler. Anyways, I strayed too far from the point. The point being - necromancy's just a tool. Good video, learned quite a bit new.
