    Ian, you should do a completely tongue-in-cheek / april fools style video on Forgotten Weapons about your dog. Have a thumbnail with a picture of her and her country of origin, then have her on a table in front of you and go over her features, what she was originally bred for, instead of a shooting demonstration throw a ball and highlight how she moves etc.

    I am now about 2 years behind cutting edge which is my sweet spot. Still relevant and yet just behind enough to profit from others misfortune. Ian's issue with the red dot on the pistol for example. As soon as reliability is solved I'm all in. Thanks Ian for blazing the trail for me.

    Loving the series and deep dives. It is a good way to lean things, especially when coupled with the actual shooting and using the stuff. The combination makes for a more complete and comprehensible expirience. Looking forward to more, guys! And while I appreciate the WWSD stuff, do not forget your more historic content and also goofyness (Yes, looking at you Karl, with that "What a lovely day" video. Still love that.). Keep at it!

    Having a white light on a rifle with a bipod is no joke. The Mk12 Mod 1 that I was issued had a bipod and a white light (amongst other things), and no one who was on the other end found it funny. Do what makes sense for you, and screw everyone else.

    So many people say about the 92fs, "but you can see the locking block! It's totally exposed!" Yet a glock or sig uses the barrel hood as a locking surface, and you can't get any more exposed than that.

    • @lon242
      @lon242 7 років тому +2

      Chris F It's more complex than just a barrel hood, though, and there are multiple ways for gunk to get in. That said it's fairly resilient despite being so open. Not really surprised Karl's worked well.

    I was looking forward to this video even though I don't shoot often, compete in matches, or own a fire arm. I find firearms (and the gear that surrounds it) fascinating as there's so much variety of practice and philosophy that surrounds them. It's good to hear honest opinions on what works and what doesn't that aren't clouded by sponsorship, advertisement, fear of offending others and so on. These match reviews have come to be one of my favourite things to watch as they cover a wide range of topics that surrounds a central core which is the match. Keep making great honest content!

    Karl, after watching a couple of videos where you raved about the Beretta, I saw one at a pawn shop a few months ago at a decent price and decided to try one. I'd never shot one before, as I'm with you on slide mounted controls and I generally just don't care for hammer fired pistols. After trying it though, holy crap. I did swap the hammer spring out for the D model to make the double action pull better, and I'm very interested in that G safety mod that you referenced. But I definitely understand what you mean about ease of shooting. Thanks for being the inspiration/excuse for me to pick up a new toy!

    35:53 @InRangeTV Ian, it's a magnetic bipod--you can have more than one mount point for it! The question is--can you buy the mount separate from the bipod? Is it cheap enough to buy two and keep a spare set of legs? Can we amass enough interest for the company to offer that?

  • @cannonlove2

    I have to have a single action trigger because I liked the Beretta so much when I was in the navy. I had never shot before but I did ok with the m9. When I got out I shot a bunch of striker fired and DAO hammer fired pistols and was never as good. Picked up a m9 again and was shooting awesome.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 7 років тому

      Trijicon RM01 Type 2 or RM06 Type 2 are the only RMR’s I’d ever put my $$ down on out of the options out there. Love Trijicon products. I have the TA02-RM01 4x32 ACOG w/RM01 RMR (Tenebrex Killflash on both the ACOG & RMR) and they have worked flawless on my Daniel Defense MK18. The 3.25 MOA Dot works great for super in close stuff. The RMR isn’t the Type 2, but it doesn’t need to be with the lack of Recoil it sees on top of my TA02 ACOG. I can’t wait to try a Type 2 on one of my Pistols, but I don’t have any that are milled for RMR’s.

    I have a habit of downloading all of my mags by at least one or two rounds. Especially in moon dust environments for the same reasons you have mentioned. I've been through waist deep moon dust and found that for what ever reason my mags seemed to function better with less tension on the springs. Less friction is what I figured.

    Having been in rear line units when we went to M9 Ranges, we had range briefings with lines such as "Lane one aim at lane three's target, Lane two aim at lane one's target, Lane three aim at lane four's target, Lane four aim at lane two's target..." That being said, I fully endorse and encourage people to buy new commercial produced M92 pistols.

    I've seen some PPCLI (1 & 3) guys with those mag pouches, never knew the proper name for them until now. Interesting that Karl's come to the same conclusion as many members of such an elite unit tasked with such a diverse mission spectrum.
    with the context of those mag pouches being trusted around parachute cords and mountaineering ropes... I can believe Karl and Ian's own endorsement of the design.

    Have you looked at the Shield RMS for a pistol red dot? I'm considering one for my G17 MOS. They're marketed specifically for slide mounts, with a mounting plate for the MOS Glocks that sits it low enough to co-witness standard irons, and they use a battery drawer so you don't have to re zero the sight every time you change the battery.

    • @akmarksman
      @akmarksman 6 років тому

      Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics (they've got a youtube channel) says the Shield RMS is a no-go.
      He's beat the hell out of a Trijicon RMR,and it still runs.
      If I didn't have a RMR already,I would have gone with a Deltapoint.

  • @timsaunders4438
    @timsaunders4438 7 років тому

    You should try shimming the battery and contact on the RMR with electrical tape to stop the battery from shifting and causing the dot to flicker under recoil. I was having the same issue after about 5000 rounds and this fixed it. Also Trijicon just released the type 2 RMR which has been redesigned to mitigate certain issues related the red dots on pistols.

    Seems to be very good gear for matches but I'd never choose to have mag holders that do not have a top cover. And while i'm sure they are great in desert/badlands where you live i'm not sure they would work as well in forests or in snow. Then again if it starts snowing where you live then snow packed mags are probably the least of your problems.

    • @olppano
      @olppano 7 років тому +3

      This stuff works even better in forest because there is no dust and sand everywhere. Snow becomes problem only when you keep your mags rounds up.

    • @Berthrond
      @Berthrond 7 років тому

      I really cant believe/trust that mag pouches without tops will be trustworthy in forests. Besides there is leaves/pine , bark , twigs and other fun stuff in woods that can mess with a gun and equipment. Had a rifle malfunction because pine needless had managed to get in the trigger group and jammed the trigger.

    The problem that most grunts had with the M92's was with the mags. Sure the pistol itself was at beat to shit levels but it would run. They would never let us have new mags for the thing so we were using 5+ year old mags that would behave weird as shit before adding dust or sand and after that good fuck luck after your first round. Once they started to replace the mags most of the complaints went away.

    So as a single point of info I have personally experienced a single failure on a ten round PMAG. The second round (9th in the stack) out of the mag got hung up on the M4-style feed ramps of my midlength gas system AR.

  • @Ihasanart
    @Ihasanart 7 років тому

    The main point in the RMR's downfall for such shooting is the battery location and retention, which is much harder to access and modify/fix. All the top mount/side plate battery designs are much more durable without maintenance, hence the Deltapoint Pro and Vortex's offerings pretty much dominating at this point.
    I love the RMR's clarity, dot variety and bomb proof housing, but the battery location and unease of access means I'll never choose one until Trijicon redesign it.
    On the handgun topic, Karl it would be interesting to see your opinion on the Wilson Combat Beretta 92G Brigadier Tactical, seems to be the best of the Beretta mods and tweaks.

    I use a lot of Tula 9mm for training with no problems, but my gun is not contaminated with moon dust either. Would not trust it for defense and it does rust if not stored properly. Tula rifle ammo forget it. I have three 308 rifles that have had siezed broken cases in them, have heard the same of .223. The Silver Bear zinc coated steel case ammo has proven totally reliable and quite peppy in rifle loadings. Now I'm checking out Faxon barrels, thanks.

    The more of the WWSD rifles I see the more it starts to remember me of the german g36 rifle. The g36 is extremely light, it has got a zommed scope and a red-dot even if shitty by comparison to the mordern optics. The mags can be clipped together to extend the ammo on tap and the rifle is reliable as far as I can see (a friend of mine is in the Bundeswehr and he loves his rifle). Further there is a general purpose and a spacial forces or "doorkicker" variant of the g36 in use. Also it is very ambidextrous.

    Karl you said at some point you think Tula doesn't change the powder metering setup when going from 5.45 to .223, thus explaining the vary light powder charge.
    Do you think there is a similar lazy short cut happening from 9mm Mak to 9mm Luger?
    (There 9mm luger seems to be lightly loaded to me.)
    Could the handguard be mounted upside down? If so would that help keep your hand away from the hardware when it's hot?
    The hardware being right in front of your red dot wouldn't cause any problems I can think of.
    Ian, have you considered leaving the bipod mount on the front of the handguard and mounting a second one on the back so you could use the bipod however is best at that time?
    (On to the undirected questions and stuff.)
    Xproducts 50 round drums were $200 to $320 so they were the most expensive mag I've seen.
    (Now the lowest priced one is $150.)
    Have you seen the flat buffer springs? The description on this page makes me think they might effectively have a higher spring load.
    www.apexgunparts.com/ar15-m16-flat-buffer-spring-new-us-made.html?Newsletter&MP-40%2C+M53+Kits%2C+and+awesome+deals%21&Standard+Newsletter+7-21-17
    Do you think a stronger buffer spring could help the first round from the D60 drum feed?

  • @sethgordon4473
    @sethgordon4473 7 років тому

    I have a P mag, and it is fine, but I like the Lancers better. They seem easier to load, the steel feed lips do not get more flexible when they are hot, and these magazines are a little slicker and easier to insert into the well.

    • @sethgordon4473

      Also, I have a Taurus PT 99, which is like the Beretta, which I shoot well, and whose safety I like better, but I retired it. First the rear sight broke. Then the locking block. Finally, the trigger return spring broke at the start of a stage. Granted, it's nearly 30 years old, but those failures, and more stovepipes than you would expect, and now I shoot an M&P Pro.

    Karl, about your M9 holster (UM84), you missed a lot of the functionality. This holster was designed by John Bianchi then president of Bianchi Leather and Brigadier General, US Army Reserve, retired. It is totally ambidextrous, in that the flap can be easily moved to the other side for lefties (like Ian) and the belt loop is on both sides. Also, it can be used with or without the flap and can be used in an ambidextrous cross-draw configuration. It was also available with a shoulder holster harness. And what about the cleaning rod that is on the front edge and the fact that it is heavily padded for protection and unlike Tidex, it won't crack. I know that I'm probably forgetting something as the General thought of everything. I totally agree, the military got it right. Sorry about being 4 years late with this comment.

    Ian How does your heeler handle the land of spikes and thorns that is Tucson? Here in Texas I only have a fraction the thorns you do and I'm always pulling things out of her or avoiding areas all together.
    Those 60 round drums need patched lanyards loops ala Finnish WWII mags

    i agree with the beretta 92, especially the decocker. it is a great gun. love the new m3 as well. still prefer the runner up, p226 myself, but the beretta is a nice firearm.

    I want to guess the charging handle you are getting is the Geissele Airborne charging handle.

    Thanks very much for the review and the how it went in the HAH match - great info! I heard you mention that you didn't have situations where the sling could have come into play.. seems to me you had more than one. I hope you think about that - use of the gear is part of the "thing" isn't it? Regardless, thanks guys!! I really enjoyed watching and hearing about your experiences.

    Trijicon has very recently updated the adjustable RMR, specifically addressing the flickering issue on pistols. I can't speak to the effectiveness of those changes, but it's worth noting.

    If scores/lives are on the line then use quality brass cased ammo.

    • @warriorcraft4191
      @warriorcraft4191 7 років тому +2

      Top shot is not an educational source for gunfighting or competition. It is for entertainment. Take some classes. Steel cased is cheaper and steel in general is more widely available than brass so that is why it is used, like when the US had a brass shortage but still needed 45acp during WW2, steel sufficed. Brass is the superior material however.

    • @themilsurpnerd9896

      Many countries issue steel cased ammunition. These days it's not as bad as you may think. A small accuracy loss, but people are always less accurate than their rifles.

    Ian or Karl; Do you think something like the Trijicon RMR RM05 would be more viable on a pistol since it uses Tritium and fiber optics for reticle illumination rather than a battery like the RM07? That way there is no worries about the reticle flickering from battery contact, or lack thereof? I know it has pros and cons over the RM07, one pro being no battery, so no having to take it off the change batteries and then re-zero.. but a con being it has the larger 12.9MOA green triangle reticle. I'm looking at a Trijicon RM05 or the British-made Shield RMS for my Glock 41MOS.

    That "change nothing" axiom reminds me so much of my weightlifting days in high school. Do they make variable optics where you can just push a button and have it switch between preprogrammed settings like a radio? I imagine theyre heavy and unsuited to the WWSD project, but I can see them being useful in matches.
