Anarchy Pony it is a sad thing having long beautiful hair and cool historic head gear. You want to wear that ushanka, but do you really want to cover your hair? I have the same affliction.
With almost every video, you guys remind of of two big facts. First, Arizona is beautiful...I really hope to see it some day. Second, Fudd ranges (the only ranges available besides indoors for me) suck.
From what I can remember about doing 2 gun and 3 gun matches. This came out during the early 1990s after I got out of the Army the first time and started doing the early form of IDPA. I went back into the Army 4 months later and on my off duty time at Ft.Carson the SF guys were doing 2 and 3 gun stuff because either they developed these techniques or went to civilian schools like Thunder Ranch and other tactical schools. This type of training were non existent in infantry units. Doing room clearing with M16A2s. Speed reloading was instructed but never really enforced as a drill because as infantrymen you were taught from Basic and Infantry School to do this by instinct. I did teach my soldiers in my squad back then to do stand up rapid reloads and the use of the large ghost ring sights in the manner of a pistol shooter. My squad was tops during live fire maneuver exercises that my commander had noticed. I then had very interested soldiers going out with me doing IDPA matches on the weekends using my Taurus PT 92 9mm. I still back then had my first carbine which was a Colt CAR-15 with an M16A1 style large ring rear sight. My soldiers in my squad along with guys from the other platoons eventually bought their own personal weapons to compete against other soldiers and civilians in early IDPA style matches. Back then ammo was cheap also. The US Army and Marines started using IDPA style pistol and 2 gun style after the Iraq Invasion to train soldiers and Marines either prior to deployment or in theatre training to have a better gun fighter mentality. Now in the US Army, Marines, and other services are using civilian style IDPA/Law Enforcement competition style shooting incorporated into basic rifle marksmanship training after initial rifle qualification. Thus now it is part of a soldiers or individual rifleman's training requirement.
That's good training. One if the biggest skills you build is the proprioception connection with your trigger, you finger and your body so you learn how much pressure you need to break your shots without too much pressure to pull your rifle off target. Also the movement in sweeping across your targets is a skill much needed in combat rifle shooting. Well done!
Ian... I am a left handed AR shooter (not an operator): 1) ditch the bolt catch lever you have and go back to stock paddle. Your left hand index finger can drop the bolt with a standard paddle (if your fingers are too short, a smaller PG may help). For the charging handle: raptor arms or another brand ambi handle. 3) for the mag catch, get a NORGEN ambi mag catch. 1 and 3 pair well as your left index finger drops the mag... moves an inch and drops the bolt... slick setup. 1 and 2 allow you to lock an ar bolt back without breaking your firing grip (something a right handed cannot do!). Even better the NORGEN mag catch is harder to use the more full the magazine is. Prevents accidental releases and you use the regular mag catch for that (which makes sense since you want to retain the full mag and a left handed using a regular mag catch is essentially forced to grab the mag).
Alex's Odds and Ends That's just what I was thinking. Basically costless to do every day, you can do it in your basement or backyard, and with the right equipment it could transfer quite nicely to the range.
I bought a timer (the same one) recently. It really make a huge difference, not only in having a metric to go by and adding a bit of pressure, but it also makes it difficult to fool yourself, and that alone makes a big difference.
VTAC comes up with some awesome drills . The VTAC 1-5 is my personal favorite. I do this drill with pistol and Carbine . I make up my own 1-5 with mag changes and malfunctions. Fasted time for me in 4.6 with carbine and 5.4 with pistol .
Splendid video. Great idea to have the viewing public participate in the process. Who knows, you guys may end up designing our next military issue rifle.😀
I have Kyle Lamb's book, echo Karl's comments, highly recommend the book!!! He also has a pistol book, not as good as Green Eyes Black Rifles, but still a worthwhile read. The problem with the pistol book is pistols are harder and more varied so it seems to go in a generalized area. BTW I met Lamb, seems like a really nice dude.
Great video. Good drills. I remember a handgun drill in advanced officer training a few years back. I think it was a total of 10 rounds between 3 mags (i.e. 2 reloads) on 3 targets at 5 or 7 yards. The hoped for time was something like 6 seconds? I think (maybe 8). Almost nobody achieved it. I came within a couple of tenths because my P229 and i are old friends. The drill is harder than it sounds. Try it. Lot of good ideas here, and challenging yourself is key
Well only a fool pre-orders a non-limited-edition anything. That said, I think HMG is doing a much better job of justifying their delays than most anyone, so I give them the benefit of the doubt. I, for one, will wait until the lines are running and the first generation gets field-tested. A good gun is worth waiting for.
InRangeTV Ian needs try shooting right to left if it is permissible as a left handed shooter. In general lefties do better right to left as righties shoot left to right.
Very good video. Ian could improve his time a bunch if he would work on his first shot, he's waiting for the beep to finish then deciding to shoot, it's much more efficient to listen for the start of the beep and automatically move to the target shooting as soon as the gun gets there.
Good drills but Throwing away magazines is a big military no-no. You can never assume your field resupply will come in magazines (usually just ammo boxes) and most issue mags are trash so odds are you are using your own mags anyways. Some units even have SOPs about tucking in your blouse in outside the wire so if you don't have time to put the empty back in your kit where your fresh one was you can throw it down your shirt until you get a spare moment.
Karl & Ian... I would really like to see you guys apply this technique to an intermediate range using a thermal site on wild hog eradication. I know it's not a match environment, but knocking down the maximum number of multiple moving targets would be interesting as hell!
Does Ian not have an ambi mag release? I have the same affliction and I use the Norgon release on a couple ARs. It fits inside the normal envelope and works quite well. I also have a Knights Armament ambi release, which is larger than normal but I think is a little harder to use
Ok, I'll have to watch it again but it looked like Ian was using his non dominant thumb to drop the mag with the standard mag release. Or was the mag not dropping free?
Is a standard box magazine more viable then a drum magazine for general use in a semi automatic rifle? I'm not sure about the D-60 but the Beta C-Mags and other assorted high capacity alternate magazine designs like casket or quad stack magazines usually tend to have a poor history of reliable function.
Just from my experience, Ian could probably control recoil better if he squared up to the target a bit more and biased his weight forward. Also, when transitioning between targets, look at the target first, then let your sights follow. Good luck and I hope your shooting gets faster!
Ian's rifle has no adapter, it's merely the end of the Viking Tactics sling wrapped around the stock and cinched down. Mine has a cludged nylon thing with a D ring, but it's not necessary. ~Karl
I shoot a match once that had the 1-5 drill setup as one of the runs. We had been shooting two hits on each target up until then, I'm embarrassed to say how I did.
I am a lefty. and instead of a BAD lever or the like, why not just reach up with your trigger finger and hit the bolt release? If used in conjunction with an ambi-mag release you can be as fast as a righty and have additional benefits when clearing a feedway malfunction (where you have to lock the bolt back as part of the clearing procedure). I have used a BAD lever and found it lacking- I would hit it when stripping a mag/pressing the mag release, sticks and debris would get caught in it, and if you bend it it can cause problems with the bolt locking back. If you feel the need there are modified bolt releases made by Seekins or Badger or Geissele (I haven't played with this one).
We tried the BAD lever and it's a POS, potentially even dangerous. We have a much better solution that we'll be talking about in a subsequent video. ~Karl
What made you guys decide on a fixed buttstock on the WWSD rifles? Also side charging upper receivers have multiple speed advantages that can be used in the battlefield. among the improvements that you have made to modernize the rifle, why do you still use a fixed buttstock and a standard upper?
Do you think Ian's speed could be improved by squaring off his stance a bit more? Karl is a bit more squared-off and it looks like it's easier for transitions whereas Ian looks a little more bladed (could be just the camera angle). Ian's hips appear to be more strained when finally moving to the target farthest away from him.
Ian stands much straighter than Karl. It seemed to make a different in the “half & half” drill, where Ian’s body was being pushed backward over the course of the string and he had to work to stay upright.
Lmao "Ian has a problem...we can't mitigate all of it" buwhahaha Karl you are vicious. I don't always laugh at left handed jokes, but when I do it's because they aren't right. 😱
what slings are you using with the gwacs lower receivers? I have one but I'm not sure which slings will work with it and i don't want to deal with returning incompatible slings.
How to know if you are an operator?? Easy!! Beard, arm tats, oakly shades, shemagh, oh yeah, don't forget the hat with a flag on it and appendix carry.
Ian has the best hats.
Anarchy Pony it is a sad thing having long beautiful hair and cool historic head gear. You want to wear that ushanka, but do you really want to cover your hair? I have the same affliction.
"You're not restricted 10 rounds." You made someone in certain areas of the country cry there.
Or of the world (yup, myself for instance)

Fudd ranges are like a slow internet connection - worse than nothing at all. ~Karl
Rob Nouvell Arizona is a WOW state for shooting. That's for sure.
LadyAnuB tell me about it! But so beautiful and those night skies!
Come to the mountains of AZ. Much cooler here. Although the competition shooting scene is non-existent sadly.
Remember, the only difference between screwing around and science, is writing it down.
So I've heard! ~Karl
Karl is fast! 1/4 second transitions and down to .14 seconds between shots! (Yes, I held a shot timer up to the computer).
Karl: "You keep speeding up until you start missing"
Ian: * misses on first shot *
That's got to suck.

These drills would be good for using an airsoft gun at home to get that motion path and muscle memory down.
There are indeed drills that can be done with airsoft successfully, no doubt. ~Karl
Alex's Odds and Ends

Exactly what I was thinking cause I live in the uk😭

Excited for the HaH 2Gun event videos. You guys are a big reason I started into USPSA and 3gun. Just made A class last week!
This is one the most interesting gun videos I've watched. You make concept type rifles and put them to the test.
Splendid video. Great idea to have the viewing public participate in the process. Who knows, you guys may end up designing our next military issue rifle.😀
When will Ian switch to being right handed?
is he wrong-handed?
At least his hands aren't inverted.

What I got planned in July in Wyoming using fig 11's. Great vid.
An excellent video, particularly with reference to the need for continual practice.
we were taught point shooting in the army, out to 10-15 yards, you just look over the sights. much faster than quasi-aiming
I love this stuff! Thanks Karl and Ian.

best celebration ever
Perhaps, once you receive your HMG STG, you could perform these drills with that weapon?
Probably. ~Karl

Nice practice drills - :) Thanks for sharing yours!
Love all of these training videos!
What is slowing Ian down is his grip style with his off hand. Its great for increased accuracy but not so much for reflexive fire.

Great Video Men..... Thank You!!!
Thank you!
ty
holy shit, im fucking early. quick, let me post something really irrelevant
It's the way of the UA-cam tribe. The way of the people. ~Karl
Could you do a quick video on the timer? Does it stop after a certain amount of shots?
Are there going to be more WWSD2020 videos when it’s closer to release?
I suspect that mental skills are easier to relearn than purely physical abilities like strength, speed, or endurance.
We've had great success with the D60 and that's a future video. ~Karl

what sling adapters are you guys using for the fixed stocks? thanks.
Ian's rifle has no adapter, it's merely the end of the Viking Tactics sling wrapped around the stock and cinched down. Mine has a cludged nylon thing with a D ring, but it's not necessary. ~Karl
thanks!
How would a binary trigger affect such drills I wonder?
Same question

Christian Hostetler Side chargers allow greater ingress for gunk

Last time I saw Karl's rifle it had an IR laser on it (DBAL?) I'm wanting to see some night shooting.
Will you eventually make a list of all the what would Stoner do rifle parts? So that we can build them ourselves?
Yes, as we "certify" them through our testing and work. ~Karl
Ian is the son that Karl never had
The oppression of the right handed can't hold Ian back! I'm glad to see us lefties sticking it to the man!
Ian stands much straighter than Karl. It seemed to make a different in the “half & half” drill, where Ian’s body was being pushed backward over the course of the string and he had to work to stay upright.
Speed is a consequence.
Wondering if it would’ve made a difference if Ian shot left to right instead of right to left.
Lmao "Ian has a problem...we can't mitigate all of it" buwhahaha Karl you are vicious. I don't always laugh at left handed jokes, but when I do it's because they aren't right. 😱
Where'd Ian get that sick hat?
Ian, where did you get that French hat (or is it one of the IDF issue)?
Karl has a habit of saying something, then correcting himself right afterwards. Not in a bad way, just funny.
what scope is lan useing. also i would be cool to see that lower in 308.
Go Karl!!
A bit of topic, and I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but do you or Ian hunt in any description? Or have hunted before ?
I have, and do, but rarely. I don't think Ian has at all? ~Karl
Karl, have you developed any lever-gun specific drills?
fuck i wish i could do these drills
whe are limited to 5 rds up here. unless i used a .22
Is this the one where Ian had a case rupture? I think you guys said that video was still being edited, but I haven't caught said video yet.
+YCCCm7 No. We do not have footage of that and it wasn't with a WWSD rifle.
hey karl, where does one get one of hose timers? thanx
To do these drills what was the ammo cost? How much does your average training session cost?
Using el-cheapo Tula ammo we're running at about 25 cents a round fired. ~Karl
What optic are you guys using?
Would the hyperburst on the AN-94 be awesome for this or...?
what slings are you using with the gwacs lower receivers? I have one but I'm not sure which slings will work with it and i don't want to deal with returning incompatible slings.
Viking tactics. Video on that in the queue.
awesome thank you so much!
I'd like to these drills, where can I get target stands like in the video?
+Phil Jones Made them out of pvc at Home Depot.
What timer do you use?
karl are those crye precision pants? curious.
Yep.
4.79!
Lawdy lawdy Ian.
*fans self*
I'm still waiting to see the full rifle specs.....
"you're not restricted to 10 rounds"
*cries in Californian*
I can't help but feel a little bad for Ian when Karl keeps smoking him in all these drills, lol.
It's not a competition, just a practice day. :)
Joshua Powell Friendly competition is all.
You can't let your ego be dependent on how well the other guy does; concentrate on how well YOU do. The point isn't to win, it's to improve.
Siesta Time that's what the guys try to say, but people are trying to imply something else with the interaction of two protagonists.
Karl, you look 12 clean shaven
But does lots of coffee help In the speed situation?
As someone that shoots a fair amount, and drinks more than a fair amount of coffee, I can definitively, and quite tragically, say no.
I've experiments with that and that's a resounding no for caffeine. The only substance that improves my scores is alcohol- like one drink.
No, but playing cod helps. Doritos, and dew are good too.
Slouch hat nice
woot
you obviously haven't tried a 4 point sling. they are the best out there
+BOLO4gunsNgear Slim Good point.~K
Well theres your problem, Ian! You're shooting with the wrong hand!
How does that timer work?
Based on sound. It records time between shots fired. ~Karl
Right, gunshots is way louder then ambient noise, that makes sense, Thanks :D
What hat is Ian wearing? I kinda want one. :P
I never realized he was a lefty
Still waiting for Karl to properly run his rifle like he did many, many videos ago. :D
PLEASE DO 60FPS
How to know if you are an operator?? Easy!! Beard, arm tats, oakly shades, shemagh, oh yeah, don't forget the hat with a flag on it and appendix carry.
+stevbarto I guess we failed that test. ~Karl
Are you sure you want to practice alone after Ian's out of battery experience?
Yep. It is what it is. ~Karl
"How should I, that I am a operator?"-Ian
didn't that gwacs lower explode?
Nope and I have no idea where you got that idea? ~Karl
Rewatch that video. That explosion happened 6 years ago and it wasn't even my rifle, it happened to someone I was running the timer for. ~Karl
ahh, sorry my bad
