It’s not quite as open world as botw but Ni No kuni is basically Pokémon mixed with ghibli. The cutscenes are even animated by ghibli and the world as you said is super wholesome and inviting :). so I highly recommend!!!

I think you've hit the nail on the head for Ghibli, feeling like something exists in a world, instead of a world revolving around a character or a niche plot. I wish more had that focus on the world tbh. Another great, thought provoking video!

I think this has been a good break down and brought me towards ideas I hadn't necessarily thought about especially in how people remember characters.

I agree with that you're saying and I think Casey as good as he is misuses the word story. Casey says story and we think Plot, but perhaps for him people/ characters are the story and thats what's hes on about. Characters are his narrative.

These are great points that you've made here. I do believe it is probably a combination of both. At least for me, it's the title that grabs me and the story that keeps me. However over time if I become a regular of a channel then usually it doesn't matter what the story is, I'm there for the character. That being said I'd like to start making UA-cam videos myself. I subscribed to story comes first but now I will consider the character. Thanks Joe.

I completely agree. For me, a youtube video is all about being a nice place to be. I watch you because you’re real, you’re honest and open, but also because the shots and music give off such a chill vibe. Sometimes the videos can make me reflect on myself, sometimes it just feels like hanging out with a cup of coffee on a rainy day.

People want experiences. Sometimes that's story, or a connection, more often that's an environment or vibe.

Another class video Joe, thank you! Although, I would argue story *is* character. The story is charactes + plot, because the why of a good plot is answered by character. Story and plot are separate.

Character and indeed the voice of a person can help set the tone of something. By voice I don’t just mean the sound but also how they communicate in general and set the tone. It helps establish a vibe, a sense familiarity to such an extent the backdrop is secondary.
Finding a balance that’s engaging but not shouting “pay attention to me” all the time can be something of a dark art.

I've thought of it as always boiling down to story in the end. in Ghibli the worldbuilding invites the viewer to tell/live their own stories, and sitcoms care less about the plot per episode and more about the arcs the characters go through - which tells a story. But there's def a point to be made for too many people thinking story just boils down to narrative, learning that elements of a story are made up of stories themselves increased the quality of my work for sure

There's some exceptions but maybe I'm thinking about how it's told instead. Like for example there are loads of movies where the characters suck but the story is so mysterious or captivating. Like I just watched The Menu, I didn't care for most characters but the whole time I was super captivated over what was going on and what was gonna happen next. If it's just a normal "go stop/save person X" story then sure that won't be the memorable part but I love movies like The Menu where it's captivating because it's so unusual and new. Maybe everything everywhere all at once applies too? Maybe even a movie like Platform on Netflix, I can't even remember what any character looked like but I know I was glued to it the whole time.
Good movies like these are hard to find though unfortunately. It's a nice treat to stumble upon them. But yeah most of the time the characters are most important, like look at Knives Out, it has a great story too but if it wasn't for Daniel Craigs character it wouldn't have been anywhere near as good, plus the Carer of course.

i think there's a distinction to be made between story and plot. you talk about plot a lot in this, where as i think the story that casey is referring to is everything that is connected, including plot. even on that diagram he has all those subtitles that come together into story. he even has actors written down which would imply the characters that you're talking about. and the "ghibli effect" is just story telling again. so i think you possibly got that mixed up, but other than that, yeh i agree. movies, i think, are rarely about their subject matter and their plot alone. those are just tools to better and more clearly represent the deeper themes

  • @Hoppa_Joel

But Joe, you did not just film this, you planned it, and you edited it, you decided what would happen, that, is a story. Yes, the personality is the big part, but it is part of the story.
Without the larger than life character you don't have much story, but in the same breath, without some story, some plot, and a reason forward you just have Brian Blessed shouting "Gordon".
And, I agree, thinking for yourself is important, but, that is creating your story.
We all create our own spin on everything we do. Take an MMO for example, and a scripted story presented to a dozen players. Each of these are your personalities, the story is the catalyst for what they feel, see and do. You might have some that 'skip past the text for the xp' and that is fine, some might read the narrative, and see something the writer meant only subtly an under developed sorrow in the story perhaps, and that might draw the personality in to that, but at the same time, another player might get a different take on the same lines, interpreting the tale in a whole other direction.
My best friend is vision impaired. She has partial vision, so has trouble reading the text in quests. Her and I have played MMO's for 22 years together. About 5 years ago I started streaming, to read the stories to her as we quest. I am no big time streamer. I live in an area with poor internet so my stream quality is pixelated when I move too fast in the game.
But I read the stories, while we play. I do accents, I try to keep ( if I can ) the same voices per each character. On quests, that we have done a dozen times, I may decide to read it from how perhaps our characters might recieve the same story. First read through, say we are on human characters and I read it as it was supposed to be read. Next read through, I am playing a dwarf, so I read the same text (from the elf npc ) as how an elf that isn't particularly friendly with a dwarf might say it. Some times, embellishing the story, altering the context, etc.
In these situations, it is all about the story, all about how it is percieved.
This carries on into the invironment of real life as well, and as you say abot the world experience. What you did, in this video is showcased intriguing parts of 'your world' that tell a hidden underlying tale. In a short video, you tell is with your story telling of editing, that there is more.
So, while the context of what you are saying is "story doesn't matter" you created us a visual tale, beyond what you said with your background.
A writer will write those details in text, creating the world only visible in the mind of the reader. You, a visual artist, do that with your camera, background, and personality.
    Thos are the stories.
They, are important. I understand what you want to get across, and in a way you are right, but without the idea, with out that story, without that editing, planned shots.... well, what do you have?
Those, that work you did, thats the story, even if you think it is not.

I do not 100% agree. I think there are at least 3 faktors:
    1. Character
    2. Story
    3. Quality (editing, camera, ... )
I think Story and Character are of similar importance and Quality of less importance, if the Characters and Story synthesize with lower quality (example trash horror movies). But if you are a streamer, Character is a lot harder to control, since you are often live and are continues on camera for hours. Acting for that long time and live is quite difficult. For UA-cam videos where you can edit controlling character in your videos is a bit easier.
I would say more important to take the Character you have and synthesize with your Story and quality.
For example, joe seem like a serious person, he has a calm voice, therefore the kind of explaining video or "video diary" can probably work quite well for you. But of course in your dota content (on yogscast) you are quite different so maybe I am wrong or at least that all characters are not one note. That would mean you have to synthesize your character aspects with your story and quality. But I am not an expert on any of this, they are just my ideas. They might be wrong.

No, I remember the plot much better and what I do remember about the characters is within the context of the plot. I honestly don't see what you are getting at. Also, Seinfeld is an awfully bad show, there is a reason it failed to take off in the UK and only pretentious people like it, it has no story and people with brains like story.
