when I was in high school a former springbok came around and taught us how to pass in both directions for a session. the whole rugby program was there, all ages, and everyone got better at their passing because of that session.
i think it was Mark Andrews that came through that day, still remember that drill to build the passing motion up from one hand to both hands, one finger at a time.

Such a basic skill that seems to be neglected for some reason

SO pleased MW raised this issue of basic handling skills amongst the SA teams including the Boks. Astonishing the various SA coaches (including Rassie!) do not focus on this fundamental issue. Watching the Japanese league this past weekend, they are streets ahead of us. As are of course are the Irish, French and ABs to name a few. Thanks guys; world of valuable info shared by Andre here. This series of videos should be made into a coaching compendium, they are that rich in detail!

The other ongoing related issue is the short delay or short step or half step which our scrum halves seem to employ before they pass, thereby passing pressure down the line.

I grew up in SA in the 39's and moved to yhe US in the 60's. I coached rugb y here and enjoyed an Austgralian connectionb so that I became a huge fan of Randwick and the Wallaby style of rugb y. I was a Spimgbook fanatic and have spent 50 years noting how the Springboks handling skillls are frankly poor. In particu;lar, as you point out, they pass too low under stress conditions and in general their passes ar etoo hard. Thank you for raising it, I wondered if it were my imagination. But, if I ask "What is the most striking difference between the ABs and the Bokke, what jumps pout is how much beter the NZ hadling is when the game gets tight. There are a couple of points worth notinbg thatg I will put forth in a comment obn how to coach itbased on my own observations. I thoroughly enjpy your program and it gives me a chanve to maintain my Afrikaans.

Following up on my cmments on handling, I think that SA backs in general can throw beautiful long flat passes. In fact it is tghese opasses that are admired the most. It is not a good idea to try this under severe pressure though! Many SA kids are not taught to pass at shoulder height and how to place the hands to receive the b all so as to be able to pass very quickly, and then there is repitition. KIwi kids soimplu practice passing wheneverthey are stnding around. You can never practice passwing enough. I actually think the AB's passing improves under poressure at the end of games,. They are concentrating better when they have to score. think improvement should sart right at the begining with school coaches teaching the correct mechanics and instilling a belief in the need to praactice handling as much as possible. I coach players from the beginning so I am not sure how easy it is to cure the problems with pros but I suspect that under pressure players may reverty to whatr they grew up doing.

From what I understand, it can most certainly be coached and become almost automatic, which is what we should be aiming for

The All Blacks realised that their passing skills were poor before the 2015 world cup. They then went back to basics and improved their passing skills, which then gave them more time with ball in hand and decision making. Their ability to pass on the wrong foot was the big difference.

Guys, the Bulls’ basic skills are poor whether wet or dry. Basic skills is a highly technical skill to teach and learn. You will pick up a lot of basic skill errors with international players every week, especially going into contact.

Great to put catch and pass skills under pressure. Whenever we expect wet games, we would have focussed training blocks with wet balls. More teams should do this before playing in Durban even in dry weather…
