Really really good interview with first-rate searching questions & entertaining insightful answers; must admit for me Heyneke has always been a big ‘name’ but I never felt I knew much about him (other than the super-excited dude in the coaches box seemingly about to have a heart attack/nervous breakdown); this discussion has changed all that. MW you are becoming a master interviewer, no mean feat! Baie dankie!
This was really an exceptional interview with Heyneke. Very insightful! He seems like a genuinely good person with his feet on the ground. Amazing to think that many of the stalwarts in this Springbok group came from his days. Looking forward to future interviews with him!
Well done MW. Great interviewing as usual. He seemed like he knew how to get best out of his talent and wasnt scared to field a young squad. I wonder had he had senior management at Boks and himself properly driving transformation how well he would have done.
Brilliant !!.Enjoýed that 92-3 immensely..Obviously knew HM was the coach, but didn't know what genius he is..great respect..Make me think of genius sculptor that help to improve players to become the best version of themselves.
So nice to hear from Heyneke. MW you touched on something and that was the coaching teams and support structures. What you said was very true, that Rassie and Jacques had absolute freedom to choose whom they want and how many they want. That does help allot. In the past it was never the case and the one coach specifically whom had a very raw deal was Alistair Coetzee. He did not even have a coaching team close to a month before his first test and if I remember neither did he have a team manager (very different structures in those days) until about his fourth test. In the heyday all the coaches and support staff were appointed by the old selection committee and the team manager by Saru. Now I am going to run with my memory here, but I am going to make a list of coaches and a "yea" if they appointed their own team and a "no" if they did not. John Williams RIP) - no; Ian McIntosh -no; Kitch Christie - yes; Andre Markgraaff - partially I think; Carel du Plessis - no; Nick Mallett - partially; Harry Viljoen - yes; Rudolf Straeuli - yes; Jake White- partially; Peter de Villiers - no; Heyneke Meyer - yes; Allister Coetzee - no, Rassie Erasmus - yes, Jacques Nienaber - yes. Having your won team to work with and if you look at the numbers involved nowadays, has to make a huge difference. Rassies team is about 30. Up to the early 2000'2 you were lucky if you had two assistant coaches (forwards and backs), a manager, a team doctor and a baggage master! There were no attack - or defensive coaches. No permanent physios, therapists etc. Defense, attack and strategy were all part of the head coaches' role. Media communication was left to the team manager.
Biggest mistake SARU made was not appointing HM as bok coach immediately after his SR success, when his Bulls-Boks superstars were peaking, then we would have had another x2 WC titles.
So naby as n onvergeeflike fout as daar so iets soos onvergeeflik was. Selfde as wat All Blacks met Cullen en Bauden Barret en Mallet met Gary Teichman. Ek dink dis afrigters so eie onsekerheid en druk van buite of blote dom astrandheid.
There was a time I couldn't wait for him to become Bok coach ... then I couldn't wait for him to go. He was too one dimensional in his thinking, and couldn't see past his preconceived ideas of what a player should look like. He single-handedly destroyed the international career of the best fetcher this country has ever produced ... Heinrich Brussow.
Bring him back to the bulls, under him they will have a chance to at least make a Heineken Cup final. The glory days of the bulls must rerturn the bulls under Jake White are too inconsistent.
@megafoonsport Jake is in my opinion overrated. The only big trophy that he won as a head coach is the world cup in 2007. Other than that he only won a few currie cups and a challenge cup with Montpellier. He couldn't win the Rainbow cup, URC, Super Rugby or Heineken Champions Cup in several attempts which is suppose to be way easier than to win a world cup which suggests to me that Eddie Jones had a big influence in us winning the world cup in 2007 (he was still a good coach in those days) as well as the fact that we played easy teams in that world cup because we didnt have to play the all blacks, Wallabies or France in that world cup. Jake''s overall winning record with the springboks is like 63% which is suppose to be below the expectations of springbok fans like you and I as we are one of the most succesfull rugby nations of all time. Eventhough Jake took the Brumbies to a super rugby final and the bulls to 2 URC finals, both the brumbies and the bulls weren't the top teams of those seasons that they reached the finals and basically performed above expectations in the play-offs as they had inconsistent results in the pool games of those seasons. Jake also has this habit of winning one big game against super strong teams like the crusaders and Leinster, and then losing an easier game afterwards and that is the definition of inconsistency. In both semi finals for the bulls against leinster and the semi final of the brumbies against the bulls in 2013, the team Jake coached were the underdogs which already proves how overated he is because if he really was a great coach, his teams wouldn't have been underdogs in the first place but would've been favorites and the best like Leinster and the crusaders. Jake's second season with the bulls in the URC was terrible and he also had a 46% winning record with the springboks in 2006 which includes a 46-0 loss to the wallabies that year which proves how inconsistent he is as a coach. I'm sorry to say this, but I don't think Jake White will ever win a Heineken Champions cup (I hope I'm proved wrong) I know Heyneke Meyer also didn't do that great with the boks, but I trust him at the bulls based on the success that he had there. I also think that he layd the foundation for the bulls to win the 2009 and 2010 Super Rugby cup under Frans Ludeke because Ludeke inherited all Heyneke Meyer's asistant coaches and players who won the Super rugby cupp in 2007 as well as the success of the team that was build by Heyneke Meyer and his asistant coaches. Ludeke also did a terrible job with the bulls from 2011 to 2015 after they've won the Super Rugby cup in 2010 and he also said: " Heyneke Meyer is eintlik die een wat die groot strukture by die bulle geplaas het en ek was bevoorreg om dit oor te neem en daarop te bou."
@@megafoonsportIf Jake was fantastic then he would've restored the glory days of the bulls from when they dominated Super Rugby from 2007 to 2010. But he didn't, the bulls can't even win the URC nevermind the Heineken cup.
Johann, we'll have to agree to disagree! Let's see how the seasons pans out. For me, Jake is an exceptional coach and the Bulls are blessed to have him. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so let's see how the season(s) pan out

Very interesting to hear how things were done back then, compared to today. Worlds apart
Well presented argument. Thank you.
Mooi onderhoud MW en HM.

lets just admit he failed
Of course, all coaches can fail, that is how they learn. HM 'failed' in not winning WC, Rassie 'failed' in not winning SR title, that is life.
Baie Goeie Onderhoud! Groete!
Still believe we would have won the 2011 world cup, had Heineke been given the coaching job after Jake... we had an incredible pool of talent...
what a story.......that 2015 WC SF was very close......
What role did HM play in Teich being removed as 1999RWC bok captain? That was an easy win if continuity prevailed.
Your biggest mistake Heinike Meyer you didn't pick Heinrich Brussouw
Correct. And too many has-beens at RWC 2015?
