Here I show you how to identify the segments of the liver on CT scan. I will use an axial CT to demonstrate the eight segments of the liver. Segmental liver anatomy is crucial knowledge in radiology - and it's easy to remember!
We will use the inferior vena cava and the portal vein to divide the liver as described in the Couinaud classification.

Not sure if the question banks are for you?
If you're here, you're likely studying for a radiology physics exam. I've spent the last few months collating past papers from multiple different countries selecting the most commonly asked questions. You'll be surprised how often questions repeat themselves!
The types of questions asked in FRCR, RANZCR AIT, ARRT, FC Rad Diag (SA), ABR qualifying Core Physics and MICR part 1 are surprisingly similar and the key concepts remain the same throughout. I've taken the most high-yield questions and answered them in video format so that I can take you through why certain answers are correct and others are not.
Happy studying,
Michael

6:14 and 6:21 I mistakenly say left hepatic vein instead of portal vein. Apologies for that! Hope you’re finding these videos helpful!

Just segment 2 and segment 3 is separated by left portal vein than left hepatic vein
Thanks Gayatri. Well picked up. I misspoke at around 6mins 30secs. Mentioned multiple other times that superior and inferior segments are separated by portal veins 👍🏻 thanks for letting me know!
I finally get it, thanks!!!
Yay!
Great video! Could you at some point please cover temporal bone anatomy including components of the labyrinth, facial bone anatomy and fractures (le fort/zm complex) and more head and neck as these are quite difficult topics and I'm sure you would be able to explain them clearly.
Great suggestions Srideep! Definitely difficult topics but so important. Will be sure to cover them in the near future
Thank you so much

Love hearing where everyone is from! Thanks for your support! (from South Africa 😊)
Thanks a lot
Most welcome!
Thank you for wonderful anatomy tutorial!. I don’t know if anyone has told you this, you have lot of facial resemblance with marnus labuschagne, South African born cricketer who plays for australia. 😄
Haha, thanks Haroon. No one has said that yet! If I could just have a fraction of his cricketing ability I’d be a happy man. You a cricket fan?
It’s absolutely nice 👍🏽
Kindly, urogenital tract anatomy and investigations will be next.
Thanks
Amazing
Sir u r good highly obliged 🙏
Awesome work! I feel like this video will soon become the premier liver anatomy vid on youtube :) Can you do rectal MRI for malignancy and some breast (mammo, MRI)
Thank you Ben! That's kind of you 🙂 great topic suggestions. Will add to the list!
Excellent video…first time I have clearly understood how to apply the demarcations to identify liver segments. Please prepare a video on critical findings on whole body CT scan. You are really handsome and knowledgeable too👍
Thank you Neeru. You're too kind! I will eventually make CT approach videos but may be a little while - they need to be perfect 💯 Glad this video helped!
Great video sir .Could you please cover liver segments in ultrasound as well sir . Thank you
Thank you very much :))
Pleasure Fatima 🙂
Fantastic video!!! Would you please be able to cover some ultrasound anatomy of the abdomen. Always comes up on exams and can be tricky but there aren’t any great UA-cam resources around!
Thank you. Agreed! I’ve been emailing US companies to see if any will sponsor a probe. If so, I plan on doing an entire body series 👍🏼
Great lecture .
Thank you for the amazing presentation.
Can you cover bronchopulmonary segments next?
Glad you enjoyed it Harshit. Of course, I will put the bronchopulmonary segments onto my list 👍🏻
you are the best..can you please make some videos on Usg specially bowel and mesentery
The hero we don't deserve :')
Amazing work
Love it
You aware of other channels that have a complete playlist of anatomy ?
Thank you Akarsh 🙌🏻 I'm not aware of any radiology anatomy playlists on UA-cam. The whole reason I'm doing this is to have this content/teaching out there for free (not stuck behind paywalls). There are some great gross anatomy channels - my two favourite are Sam Webster and About Medicine
Thank you so much!
I'm a new Rad resident
Any tips going forward?
I took some time off ~6 months after med school so I'm not really thorough with the basics just yet.
Should I start reading the textbooks from my 1st to final year again or is the relevant anatomy/pathology and other relevant aspects of other subjects given in the core Radiology textbooks like Grainger?
Thanks a lot !
Hi Akarsh. Personally I would try to learn as much as possible on the job. For example testing yourself (focusing on normal not pathology) with some scans you have selected throughout the work day. I find it much easier to remember from an actual clinical case rather than a textbook. I would use the textbooks such as Grainger to fill in gaps. I wouldn't go back to med school notes. I found this website useful for a broad overview and suggested resources www.radiologycafe.com/radiology-trainees/
You are a life saver :')
Can you please make a Vedio of MRI pulse sequences physics,Like you make earlier DWI which was really Excellent
I'm only at 17 seconds and I can already tell you, now. I have learned a lot just by the diagram. Doc said in a report I have a 3 cm. Hemangioma on the back side of section 8 that would be hard to see but they should look at it anyway, but I never worried about it as I read it's a birth defect. I thought section 8 was around where section 3 actually is, so thank you in advance for the education. PS. I have smoked for 49 years and my lungs are still good. It's just everything else that's messed up. :D There is no rhyme or reason to the labeling. Illogical.
Awesome work, thank you for such a fantastic and dinamic explanation. Must know for all medical workers.
I have my exams next week , you cleared my ct part .. ❤❤
Good luck with the exam Aditya ❤️
Nice
Thanks Dr Samir!
Great initiative.
Keep it up sir.
Kindly make a correction
Time 6:14 of video
Instead of mentioning left branch of the portal vein u have mistakenly mentioned left hepatic vein
Thank you Bilal! Well picked up. Appreciate you pointing it out. Have pinned a comment letting people know! Well wishes from South Africa 🇿🇦
In 6'21'', do you mean when we get to the level of left portal vein ?
I think differentiation between segment II and III is at the level of left portal vein not left hepatic vein as u mistakenly quote sir
Colon or large intestine ulcers can be seen in ct scan?
Hello dr
Tell us about urself
Like where are u working? Experience years ??
We’d like to know about u too
Thank u 😊
❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤️
I want to ask. A few days ago I did a Contrast CT Scan of the Abdomen and Pelvis. The doctor didn't tell me to change my pants and shirt because he saw that I wasn't wearing any metal. but I forgot to tell the doctor that my underwear has plastic buttons. will this cause artifacts
Shouldn’t be a problem 👍🏻
🙏🙏🙏🙏💐
