  • Is this the best kick drum ever? Well it’s a bold statement and one that will no doubt be questioned (rightly so) but watch the first minute or so to catch the patch previews and let the module answer that for you. There’s a hugely impressive range of kick sounds (as you’d expect) but there’s also a surprising wide palette of sound for synth tones.
    As always I aim to make videos that are educational and tutorials in themselves so I I've pushed this waaaay beyond kick drums ... Through the video I get into a trumpet that meets a dying tuba (yes a kick that sounds like a dying tuba), FM bells, kicks, snares, cowbells, sub bass and that odd 80s plastic-y rubbery sort of FM digital sound even … so there's LOTS of patch examples that you can skip around at the timing links below.
    The start of the video also has a much extended video manual style feature run down. I hope that proves useful for people wanting to learn more about the controls and circuit that delivers these sounds. Let me know in the comments if you like this longer form section at the front (or not).

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Daryl, yeah there's some overlap in complex oscillator like tones for sure. I see both sides of it, like you I really enjoying building percussion from separate building blocks but I also appreciated a distilled and refined option in a smaller footprint. The advantage over the latter here is that all (or most) of those building blocks are exposed and it's still very modular, which led to me being able to push it around into more than just kicks.

    • @TayTayMakesBeats
      @TayTayMakesBeats 2 роки тому

      I love using a combination of modules to create my drums since I end up sampling them to use as one shots anyways. However, seeing one module that effortlessly does what would usually take my entire small system to do half of is kind of mind blowing.

    Hello, would you suggest this, rather a JoMoX Modbase 09 or? I’m searching an Euro module JUST to made some “808s”…I mean the 808style bass drum. I don’t need an exact replica of the sound (or would go to TipTop or other clones) but I need a Module that can offer a vaste range of bass(drums) in the 808s realm.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Місяць тому +1

      There's plenty of that 808 boom and lots of options to shape and customise (and modulate) all that with the Ultra Kick. I haven't had the ModBase here to really have much of an opinion or to compare the two.
      I'd also take a look at the Shakmat Battering Ram, much simpler and smaller but a good sound and capable of those sorts of booms too.
      I'd say the Ultra Kick is the most flexible with a wider range, but it's good to think about much range or how specific things need to sound.

    What is that little inline attenuator you're using on the rnd step module?

      That's a little utility from Tidbit Audio, video coming on them soon as they sent a few bits over. Enjoying the adding functions to just patch in on the cables.

    • @DivKid

      1/4 note clock to trigger the kick, 1/16 note to trigger the random voltages. You need 3 random voltages to the parameters shown and that's it. Patch the kick out to wherever you like.

    • @Gorpisnorb
      @Gorpisnorb Рік тому

      @@DivKid Ah thanks man! So if I get a kick, clock, s&h modules, and random voltage source like the "Random from Mosaic" I should be able to create some of that burbling bass?!? 🤤
      Sorry for my ignorance. I'm still wrapping my head around modular in general.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Рік тому +1

      No worries, we're all ignorant and new to things at some point. If you're knew to it you could try making something similar in VCV Rack for free, get a feel for the patching and signal flow and see what you find. It's not the physical patch experience but lots of great sounds and trying out patches that you can save and come back to.
      But yeah SSF Kick, a clock with both a 1/4 and a 1/16 output and then you need 3 unique random outputs for the patch I made. So my module with SSF the 'RND STEP' is perfect for that. There's also a Doepfer random module that would be good for it too. You would need 3 of the Mosaic Randoms to get the 3 random voltages.

    Incredible in-depth video, superb, just too much talking over certain parts of the video where you need to let the sounds speak for themselves, especially the part where you demonstrate using it as low end kick over drum breaks. Thank you once again Ben, amazing video as always.

      well it's useful just for the kick to shape the low end and compress the drum sound. Definitely handy for doing bass stuff with it too.
