  • Now that I have two years managing a backyard plant nursery under my belt, I wanted to share my experience with you. I share the reason why I created a nursery up along my driveway, plants that I sold this year (which ones I won't grow from seed again and which plants I will sell in the future), how I did with overall sales (what worked and what didn't work), and my strategy for having a better growing season next year. The winter-sowing method really helped jump-start this endeavor for me! The best part is that this side hustle could also serve as supplemental income during retirement.

      Wonderful to know. Thank you. I will be doing a lot of plant propagation as well as seed collection videos now that we are entering the late summer months. 😊🌸

    Also, to answer your question as to what I find interesting in your videos? Honestly Vida … pretty much anything you cover is great. I LOVE those that show us how to harvest seeds. I have found others but once I found you and your teaching style, you are definitely my favorite. I also just loved this video as you chatted while potting up the Shasta Daisys! On my list of things to do this week is to cut back and split some Shasta Daisys I have and move them to other areas. After watching you, I see that I could really divide them up smaller than I planned and make them go a long way. Thanks for all you do! I too have been gardening for 30+ years but now that I’m getting closer to retirement I’m taking more time to really get my gardens in shape and you have taught me a lot! ❤

      Hi Martha! Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I will definitely be making more seed saving videos in the near future. I'm looking forward to going to Prescott Park in Portsmouth soon to collect some seeds. They always have beautiful flowers there. Gardening truly is therapy for our souls! 🥰🌻

    Vida! I saw a “plants for sale” post on Facebook Marketplace and afterwards I realized it was you! What a great way to market your nursery. Your prices are great and I definitely plan on coming out to see you in the next few months to pick up some perennials. (I’ll be sure to make an appt). You are right … we have been so darn hot here in NH! I was just away for a week’s vacation in Maine and my husband got all of the gardens in our yard that aren’t on irrigation set up on sprinklers and timers. I spent more time prepping my gardens before vacation than I did packing FOR vacation! 😂. But I know all of us crazy plant ladies understand. 😊

      Hi Martha! I would love for you to stop by sometime! 😊 I totally understand the craziness involved with babying our plants before having to leave them for any amount of time. They are our babies after all! 😂🌻

    I enjoy all of your content. I've always been a frugal gardener and have learned a lot about propagating plants from you. I enjoy the nursery side, too. I had been wondering about your nursery. I have been thinking for quite a while that I would like to have a backyard nursery. I'm in Maine and would have to have some kind of set up to over winter plants, I would think.

      Hi Cynthia. Thank you so much for your feedback. I truly appreciate it. 💗 You should definitely try to have a backyard nursery if you can. The big thing is to be able to "heel" in pots so that the roots are not exposed during the cold, winter months. I usually do that process in the late fall. Heeling in a plant is just like digging a hole and planting it in the ground, except that the plant stays in its pot. 😊🌺

    Thank you so much for this peek into your nursery. I love this as much as I appreciate your propagation and care videos. You’re always generous with your knowledge; it’s clear you’re also generous with your garden space.
    My parents started their business the same way - it allows for a very different and wonderful customers interaction.
    I’ll be honest, trimming those perennials early in the season is always so hard - they look so good when it’s time to trim and I always think, “someone’s going to come in tomorrow and overlook this because it’s been hacked.” Now, I trim half the plants one week and the other half in about two weeks - that way there are always plants that look good.
    The magic words with customers are often “attracts hummingbirds” and “deer resistant.” Those qualifiers can be irresistible 😊.
    People’s definition of “native” varies greatly from the purists who want native within a certain number of miles - to the generalists who are okay with just native to North America. It’s good that you are honest with your knowledge about natives, and I like that there’s no judgment coming from you. I’ve talked to people who are against “nativars” which are cultivars of native plants - that’s very specific and more restrictive than I want for my garden.
    Thank you so much for sharing all this info. ❤️

      Hi Corey! Thank you for your kind words.
      I'm so glad that I'm not alone when it comes to holding back on pruning / giving the Chelsea Chop on plants they haven't even bloomed once for the season. Even though it's better for the plant, it's still a hard thing to do! 😅
      The list of magic words for customers is super helpful!
      You are so correct with everything that you stated about native plants. I look around my garden and I'm in awe at all the different insects, butterflies, and hummingbords that come to my flowers. Some are native, many are not, and I feel like the garden is thriving.
      I hope you are having a good gardening year so far. I'll be submitting some pics of my container pots soon on your Google form. What a great idea by the way! 😊🌸

    Wow!!!! You have got your act together! I find the plant nursery very interesting. I would have mine for seedlings that I started in winter sow milk jugs...My flower beds are very full and I seldom have room for any new plants...just this morning I ripped pineapple mint out of my herb garden..now I have a spot open for some other plants!!!

      You know what's funny, Nancy? I started my nursery a few years back simply because I had so many winter sown seedlings and I didn't know where I was going to put them after potting them all up. The nursery has expanded as also a holding bed with perennials that I divided from my yard, plants that I have bought but didn't have a home for yet, etc. It's really worked out well. 💗😊

    We’re those chipmunks? So cute…but I bet they dig in your gardens. I struggle with rabbits. It’s a love hate relationship. I enjoy watching them in my yard…but when they mow all my green beans down after they have sprouted I don’t love them so much.

      I'm so glad that you noticed the chipmunks! 😂 They are cute but boy do they love to eat my strawberries and also dig in my container pots. UGH! Did you also notice the hummingbird on the red Bee Balm and/or my cat Winnie when I was talking about the Joe Pye Weed? I clearly love all animals big and small... 😊🌼

      @@budgetgardeningvita I did see them. 😀 I have really been focusing on planting flowers that will bring birds, bees & butterflies to my garden this year. It’s been a wonderful summer in Missouri this year. We’ve gotten rain consistently. Heck, I’m still mowing green grass regularly. It’s usually burned up by now. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL…You inspire me! Going to do as much seed saving as I can this fall. Thank you!

    Would you mind sharing your process for picking up soil from your local transfer station?… I’ve been online doing research here in GA and the process is not apparent. I’m calling three locations tomorrow in the meantime…
    THANK YOU ALWAYS!
    You make me wish I lived in NH just so I can grab some of your pink bee balm!

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you, Kibibi! 💗 My local transfer station just has the pile outside of its entrance. I have an SUV and I just bring a shovel and 5 gallon buckets and shovel it and fill up my car. This year, they also have a huge pile of wood chips which is nice but I haven't taken any of that (yet). The key is to make sure whatever is in anything free will not harm or damage your plants. I first tested the soil out on a few plants just to make sure it seemed ok. I hope that helps.
      Also, I had collected seeds and winter sowed the pink bee balm. You should try growing it from seed! I like Baker Creek's seeds and would recommend this mix: www.rareseeds.com/bee-balm-spielarten-mix.
      P.S. - I just wish you lived closer by so that we could chat all things gardening! 🥰🌺

    I really enjoyed this and pretty much all your videos. I too sell plants from my gardens in Minnesota. I usually have a big sale in May and then sell on Marketplace for the next month or so. I like the idea of having a backyard plant nursery. How do you overwinter the plants that remain in pots?

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  2 місяці тому

      Thanks so much for the feedback. 💗 I dig shallow trenches in each row, place the potted plants into those trenches and then backfill around those rows with free compost that I get from my local transfer station. That keeps the roots of the plants well insulated during the winter months. This method is called heeling in plants. The pots are all grouped together making them all nice and cozy. 😊
