Hey Jill🙂..speaking on the bootstrap 2.5 inch containers..as well as reusing...you could encourage customers at your plant sale to return them the following year for a discount. Those that arent gonna use them..can return them..which will cut down your costs..as well as encouraging greener growing 🙂 the best of both worlds 😁
Congratulations Jill getting your organic certification. People don't realize how difficult it is to obtain that certification, kudos to you on all your doing on the farm.
Thank you! Lots of good information. I gave away free plants last year asking just for feedback or to help others enjoy indoor and outdoor gardening. This year I over started seeds again, but don’t plan to make a profit. I prefer to give extras away for free as a gesture of kindness. My husband would love to see me make a profit, but we agreed jumping through hoops in our area for permits and dealing with customers would be too much stress. God’s provided for us so we hope to help others instead. 😊
Nice to see a farmer using real marketing to their own benefit. Too many people jump on board of ideas without doing the studies. Like you said, a simple shopping day can teach a lot.
I started selling plant starts a few years ago outside of my house because I live on a main road. It’s a good seasonal side hustle. This year for labels I’m using tongue depressor popsicle sticks and I laser engraved them because I found that sharpie can bleed and become unreadable. I too make up laminated descriptions of each variety and I also will post the information for each variety on my website for my customers to reference. I actually learned a lot about this from a video you made a few years ago. Thanks for the help and encouragement.
To me, in times we are living in, its a calling, a mission. There is such need right now for people to learn gardening and eat healthily. We grow a ton, have a yard sale, and put out a donation box. Its not a business.
My local grocery store is selling tomatoe plants for 1.56ea, on clearance before the local farmers market even opens. Clearance plants want to grow too.
Thanks for this great video! The best way to label plants for me is to have photos and descriptions like you do as well and put a number on it. And then you only need to put the number on the labels or pots. You will gain a lot of time doing this!
Just picked your latest video to say I'm thinking and praying about you, your family and all those in the oncoming Arkansas storms that look like they're headed your way. We want to hear from you here after it's over, even if it's just a 30 second video to say everyone and everything is ok. Oh, well, on second thought Jill, I don't think you could only talk for 30 seconds on anything.😀
Hello, Jill. I have been starting my plants at home from seed totally for the last few years even though I have been gardening since I was a kid. I just started watching your videos this year and have been intrigued with all you have done. Thank you for allowing us into your world including animal births, beautiful family, and very helpful hints. Your ability to share this information is phenomenal. This video is no different. My husband tells me every year that I grow too many plants and I may think about selling some extra plants next year after I have a good plan… I guess I will continue to donate and give to local schools and friends and family this year. Keep these videos coming. You and your efforts are remarkable!
I wish I could sell plants for profit. I live In a farm community and we all grow our own food so we mostly just trade plants but one day I’d love to branch out. Mostly just a dream though. Nice video Blessings ❤
I understand what you are saying about finding a niche. Last year my tomatoes were not doing well. At last minute I decided to buy some fall garden plant starts. I couldn't find any in my area. I didn't have time to start any. I will this year, just incase.
Here in Texas the Lowe’s and home depot are the Bonnie stuff and the most exspensive. This year they are $5-6 but the local nursery has a bigger variety and more organic options and sells tomatoes, peppers and other veggies for $2 and herbs for $2.50
Excellent information Jill! I want to start selling plant starts, it's my overall dream! Going to start small this year and hope to double in size by next year! Thank you so much for sharing this information with us!
I only accept checks from local lil old ladies at my farmers' market. Lol. It's a rarity, but sweet little ladies that weren't expecting to buy so much are the only ones that ever ask to pay with check and it's only happened a few times.
I grow food for my family and give away free to family and neighbors but as my daughter is approaching college im thinking i need to grow to sell😂 I am new to your channel and love it.
Welcome to our journey. I would encourage you to look at Lemongraft. They have an online platform where you can sell your produce and other things locally
I still have your strawberry freezer container that iI bought your tomatoes in. Your plants were huge and strong. I still have Jesse's bootstrap farmer tray and pots and for the first time purchased my 5 pack to start seeds. Seems like so long ago and yest not very long at all!❤
Nice video. Hope you’re holding up well with the weather. I’m sorta thinking about having a small sale now within my little neighborhood. A plant sale instead of a yard sale. The seed has been planted,🌱I guess you could say. You gave some very good information. Thanks so much. From CA🏖️take care
This is such helpful information. I would love more info on how you get these partnerships with some of the items in your store. I know a few folks that do different items like make cutting boards that are similar, but how did you start that process? Do you buy the items upfront then sale at a higher price to make a profit. Do you have contracts with these different individuals? Any info in that realm would be super helpful.
That's a great question. I try and find local artisans first and foremost. When I find something I like, I ask the individual if they do wholesale. I always buy and resale. Now we have lots that approach us with their ideas/products
Are you able to recommend a seed starting mix that already has a fertilizer in it? Or your preferred organic/natural fertilizer to add to a DIY mix? I tend to make a mix with coco coir, vermiculite and worm castings. But I feel like I have to feed the seedlings frequently!
I'm 5th generation at our local farmers market and I've always wanted to sell 0lants. I got my sales tax this year and will hopefully he doing it by next season. I want to sell herbal medicine starts something so many people there don't provide. ❤🌿
Jill, I’m so curious how you got able to sell tomatoes in the 2.5” bootstrap farmer cups 😮 my tomatoes are mammoths! And I had to up pot them into solo cups. How many weeks prior did you start them?
When it comes to varieties it all depends on your customer profile. Customers who just want a nice looking plant are a completely different kettle of fish compared to collectors like me. I don't fancy expensive plants, but I'm trying to hunt down every single fittonia albivensis cultivar there is. The same goes for sansevierias and syngoniums. I want them all and I won't buy your plant unless you can tell me that the plant really is Sansevieria trifasciata Hahnii Lucille Polan. Then if I get the proper name tag I'm willing to cough up a lot more cash than the next person who just wants a plant that won't die on them immediately. Knowing your customer is the key for any successful business.
How do you get your certificate to sell organic seedlings. And Do you have to have a certificate to sell? My husband says if you're selling single plants you don't need to up pot them to the single pot. Just plant them in a single pot. What's your take on this?

Thanks friend

Laser engraving? Interesting option I’m going to check into. Thank you for sharing.
@@Hope_Phillips if you make a mixture of water and borax and brush it on the spot to be engraved the engraving comes out really dark.
Great info, thanks for sharing
Praying you guys are safe after the bad weather

Hey Jill. I see there are storms near you . I hope you are all ok.
Yes we are. We were fortunate, the tornado touched down 25 miles south of us
I like lots of verity. I would probably buy more of flowers especially if they were new to me and / or had lots of color options
I love that you want to inspire people. You have certainly inspired me many times and I know you've inspired others as well!
Thank you. Very good info.
Glad it was helpful!
Once again - you provided so much information that I NEEDED! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@WhisperingWillowFarm Glad to know you are up and working instead of having a storm stop you! So happy.
We literally have medicinal plants growing wild on our homestead. We have:
☆Evening Primrose
☆Comfrey

☆Mullein
☆Clover
☆Nettles
☆Garlic Mustard
☆Self Heal

Wow that's amazing. Nurture those plants and you'll always have remedies on your farm
Great info! Thanks!

How many plants would you sell in a day? Spring to summer...

I'm working on a course dedicated to it now
You are amazing! Thank you so so much for this info.
And I love your reaction at 23:50. As a pyr mom I know that feeling 😅😂
You are so welcome!
Do you provide anything for your customer to physically carry the plants to their vehicle? Boxes?
We will have some but I recommend bringing your own

That sounds like a really good mix. Look into Ultra by AgriGro

I have a whole row of mystery peppers because my labels wore off lol
Oh that could be fun or scary

I started seeds with the purpose of selling them but had an issue with soil. It’s been fixed now but my plants don’t look 100%. 😢
Where do you recommend getting bulk potting soil materials?
Great question. I would start with your local farm stores and ask questions
Jill, I’m so curious how you got able to sell tomatoes in the 2.5” bootstrap farmer cups 😮 my tomatoes are mammoths! And I had to up pot them into solo cups. How many weeks prior did you start them?
You probably started yours a couple weeks before I did
@@WhisperingWillowFarm I definitely think I started them too soon. I am in 7B so I cannot even put them outside until the end of April.

I market on market place and FB and what the heck they primarily sell them for $3 they are about $4-$5.5 in stores and greenhouses
JILL, MORE BAD WEATHER ON TUESDAY..
How do you get your certificate to sell organic seedlings. And Do you have to have a certificate to sell?
My husband says if you're selling single plants you don't need to up pot them to the single pot. Just plant them in a single pot. What's your take on this?
I would contact your state plant board first
I want to start small. Has anyone sold plants to your friends on Facebook?
