As a malayali/keralite, I assure u guys don't sound like idiots and it's amazing how u guys checked this out. It's such a massive festive in Thrissur (a district n Kerala) happening every once in a year. Thank you for checking it out
This is a festival that takes place in one of the districts of Kerala, ie, Thrissur. Basically its a festival related to a Hindu temple but it is actually beyond that. Because the people of Kerala despite their religion gather at the place to enjoy the festival. The portion u were enjoying is called chendamelam. The instrument is called ' chenda'.
I am Indian and i really love the culture of festivals and celebration here. I think this ties the whole nation. I am really proud of being a citizen of this great country.
Really glad you checked this out. I had put out couple of video links with timestamps of this in your last video about indian percussion...Check it out if you want to get a further insight into it. Regarding the instrument you were wondering about, it's called 'Chenda', and people from Kerala speak the language 'malayalam' and hence called 'malayalis' or 'keralites'(more formal).
5:10 It’s someone called ‘Mela Pramani’ in Malayalam who’s basically the captain of this giant crew of 400-500 people. Interesting fact is that this epic performance is done without any kind of practice and many of its members will Be seeing themselves for the first time.
Its a festival that happens for a few days and its a totally packed festival. There is so many things to hear, see and feel during the festival. These percussion thing you saw happens as a performance for more than once during the festival. They are called melams. The most famous among them is the ilanjithara melam. Its so amazing and they do it continuously for almosy 2 hour. I suggest you watch those videos. For your information thrissur pooram 2023 happened last week.
The Epicness of this festival cannot be described in words... mildly put, it's out of this world! The beating of drums and other instruments is called Panchvadayam, which means, five instruments literally. This is highly technical performance, just like a Raaga, performed by highly trained and disciplined musicians.
I am just really amazed at how you found this out. This festival doesn't get exposure from most of the world or even from much of India. I can vouch that not much other festivals in the world is this grand and overwhelming. Literally the biggest elephants, largest crowds, loudest sound and brightest pyrotechnics show and sheer entertainment
A Percussion happening in Thrissur Pooram called Elanjitthara Melam has been entered in the Guinness Books as the largest percussion Orchestra. 250 artists participate in it and two and half hours of this extravaganza taking place without any rehearsal and a leading, experienced artist runs entire show.
As a Malayali/Keralite I,m getting goosebumps when hearing those instruments well that instrument is called 'Chenda' and this Poorum conducts every year with around 96 elephants and fireworks at night in Thrissur Kerala its really awesome you should visit Kerala one day, well Kerala is becoming one of the best friendly tourist places. really happy to be a Keralite🥰

Its not hours, the festival goes on for about 3 days. And yes the Trissoor Pooram festival is a competition between 2 temples. That row of elephants faces another row of elephants on the opposite side. People are in the middle. The winner is judged by the reaction of the crowd to the synchronised display of umbrellas and other decorative displays on the elephants. This festival is centuries old.
This is an Encient Hindu festival dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. Kerela's encient Hindu temples and their rituals are amazing. And these Rituals Songs ,Hyms, Drums and Precussion dates back to more than 2000 years. In fact all encient South Indian Temples are unique and their festivals are worth watching. In ancient times South Indian Hindu Kings had ruled Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Combodia and Thailand thats whys there you find Similarities between South Indian (Indian) and South East Asian music instruments like Precussion, flute and Music. Indonesia is a Muslim Country but still Indonesia has preserved its past. as Hindu Epics like Ramayana and Mahabharta as their National Heritage especially in Indonesian Island of Bali. Combodian encient Ankurwat temple was a Hindu temple later turn into Buddhist temple. So India ,Indian culture & music had lot of influence over south east asia.
In Kerala every Temple conduct these types of function annually... We call it "Ulsavam"... Its like an anniversary kind of thing.... The day the Deity is established or the temple open is celebrated annually.... Chendamelam, Elephants are common... These festivals last for 3--10 days according to the power of temple... And Trissur pooram is the biggest among these... And nothing can compare to it... 💓 And comparing with other states Kerala is the state celebrates more festivals every year.... 🙂❣️
I'm from Thrissur Kerala, I'm so greatful to you guys for showing our pooram festival to the world. First of all pooram is a hindu religious festival. Where gods of each temple goes on top of elephants. Which is called ezhunnallath. Every temple from kerala does pooram festival and after all the pooram is finished then the Thrissur pooram starts. It's the last and closing of the pooram festival. In Thrissur pooram there's two temples who competes with each other paramekkavu temple and vadakkunnatha temple. It's actually fun I love to watch pooram. And the drums band teams u saw are held in these pooram in each temple. There's so many things happens in a pooram festival. Even though it is a hindu festival all of the kerala people (malayalees) joins in the celebration we celebrate ut together. Regardless of they're whether hindu or muslim or christian we all celebrate. . In kerala alla the festivals are celebrated together. Whether it's christian festival or muslim festival or hindu festival we are one.❤❤❤

Hi waleska Herera This is Trissur pooram, which is the largest people s gathering in Asia. This has been started 200 year's ago by the Ruler/king of central Kerala , which is the small province of India. Today almost 2 million people participate in this. Thousands of tourists all over the comes to experience this
Which ever the Melam is Panchari or Chembada , the Ending is the best 💯. The synchronisation of the chenda with the fast paced elathalam is just phenomenal ❤️ you should experience it with the crowd.
It's called Thrissur Pooram It is the largest and most famous of all poorams in India. Thrissur pooram is also one of the largest festivals in Asia with more than 1 million visitors. Also known as the elephant festival in south India kerala THANKS for watching
In thrissur pooram a traditional orchestra performs panjaari melam a kind of drum program and another program called panjavaadhyam. You will get videos of both these programs in you tube. Also there is a documentary explanation to foreigners who doesn't know thrissur pooram
The name of the instrument is Chenda, it is very common musical instrument own by kerala. The artform using the instrument Chenda is called Chendamelam. "ilanjitharamelam" is the highlight of the Thrissur pooram which is a music consert with 3 musical instruments named Chenda, ilathalam and Kurunkuzhal. And the battle concert is called Sinkarimelam which is also kerala's common musical concert
So a bit of fun facts - King called Mr. Shakthan thampuran was the ruler of Thrissur. Vadakkumnatha temple was one of their kingdom’s master temple. Along with this temple there were other temples in successive hierarchical positions which worship different gods and goddess. As per the myth , one among the temple used to conduct a primary form of pooram or gathering but at one point they denied to celebrate along with the master temple. So king decided to conduct their own at the vadakkumnatha temple and he was the mastermind of this festival. There have designed it as co member temples deities join and visit the master temple On top of the elephants. When they all reach at the master temple, it is designed in a way that they compete each other in terms of music, colours, elephants fire works all are arranged in a particular way. There is a definitive structure for each pooram and this is mastered by years of experience. Each departments are carried out by experienced masters and people can melt in to the harmony of music color ritual etc. each group or temple will bring surprise in their presentation and compete each other. Pooram starts weeks before the actual main day where they conduct exhibitions showing the general things and they keep the surprising part as secret to reveal on the pooram day. Bringing god/goddess to main temple on top of a master elephants along with other group is the starting point. There are 2 major temples who compare each other for the orchestra what you watched and their the fire works which follows after. Each team led by a mastero and there will be around 50 + people on each side. Generally instruments in India are devised in to different category. One group is god’s and other is of demons. Former uses inside the temple and other will be used outside the temple depending on the ritual at each temple. The kerala type of drum you seeing is called Chenda is categorised in to demon type and this is a traditional kerala type. The orchestra is 5-6 hours long where they start at lower notes and as time goes it scales up to higher ones. Each time they compete next to each other. After this the elephants will align on both sides and each team will start displaying the colourful umbrellas and decorations with secret designs . This is also part of the competition. It will go couple of hours and later two teams compete in the fireworks . This is the general structure I had heard about pooram. Hope this will help to get a general idea. ( this is not a perfect narration but will help to get an idea)
This is called Chenda melam.Chenda melam and Panjavaadyam are the most popular temple instrumental concerts.1st one called as Asura thala and the 2nd one as Deva thala..Plz react next to a Panchavaadya concert
Thats pure gold ornaments tge ekephants are wearing.... and these elephants are cared for..... all their lives.... a very reputed bank is responsible for holding the ornaments and thwir upkeep for the rest of d year
Thrissur Pooram is considered one of the greatest gatherings in Asia. It has an important place in the tourism map of India, as tourists enjoy the beauty and traditions of this pooram. Rail and bus connectivity is excellent in Thrissur, which attracts many foreign tourists to the gala. It is considered as meeting of Devas (ദേവ സംഗമം). The Oscar-winning sound editor Resul Pookutty and his team recorded the sounds of the 36-hour festivities and made a movie The Sound Story.
Brother, this is kerala and this percussion instrument name is (ചെണ്ട) CHENDA, according to hindu relegion belief, there are two types of musical Instruments one is god's instrument and the other is asura instrument, chenda is asura vaadya or asura instrument....
Hi... The first one that you played is called as" Pandimelam"... It is part of hindhu festival which you may only find in kerala.. And the second one where you see two teams are competing is called as "singarimelam"... you can find it in most of the festivals... And the last one... That is called as "kudamattam" which you may only find in Thrissur pooram...
If you realy want to feel the vibe, come to the heart of Thrissur .You guys cant even imagine what is Thrissur Pooram. Next Thrissur pooram is on 19th April 2024.
Language of Kerala is Malayalam, and the people are malayalis, the drums beating is called chenda melam.its a interigal part of Kerala's festivities and dance form of kathakali.
The first one is called Panchavadyam and the other one is Shinkari Melam. There are 7 types of "melangal" . Panchari melam, Champa, Chempada, Adantha, Anchadatha, Druvam and Pandi melam (shinkari). The earlier 6 melams are called "Chempada melangal". Other than these seven "melams" two more melams are there in Kerala "Navam" and "Kalpam".
The one they are playing with hands is called " Panjavadyam" were "Panja" means five because five different types of instruments are used. And the other type is called chenda melam, there are two type of melams called "Panjarimelam" and "Pandimelam" 😊
Hi also watch it for Mysore Dasara Ambari Festival which is world famous. In that Godess and charriot made of full Gold will be carried by Eliphant for killometers whole day. It's a pride of Karnataka state
MUSIC ORIGINATED FROM INDIA 10000 YEARS AGO AND LORD SHIVA IS THE TEACHER OF MUSIC AND DANCE.....LORD SHIVA 'S DANCING IDOL " NATRAJ " MEANING DANCE KING DISPLAYED AT THE DOOR OF NASA..... LORD SHIVA IS THE CREATER OF UNIVERSE THROUGH HIS DANCE AND DESTROYED IT ALSO HIS DANCE FOR THE NEW CREATION.....
Waleska hit the nail on the head again! It’s a Hindu festival being held at the temple to Lord Shiva. Shiva is the deity who gave drumming to humanity. If you check out the image of Shiva Nataraja, the lord of the dance, (what the Christian hymn is based upon) he holds the damaru drum in one of his hands. It signifies creation of the universe. Traditionally, the deity is the actual ruler of the city and the king is only acting on his behalf as a caretaker. Since only Royalty own elephants, Therefore the temple has elephants which belong to the deity! The Murthy or deity image, idol, statute is initially when made installed with a life energy bestowing ritual. This means that idols are seen as personages. They are awoken, food offerings made, have set times for visitors, and rest times. They are put asleep at night and awoken by hymns the next morning. At set times of the year they leave the temple to visit parts of their city in parades too. In court cases, the deity is represented by lawyers in court as accepted by law. Deities do send representatives to court in cases of eg temple land encroachment often by Christian missions or Islamics. Hindu drumming is characterised by complex mathematical patterns in often quite lengthy compositions but temple drumming due to the sheer number of musicians is done on a simpler platform. Kerala is famed for its ancient ‘Kerala school of mathematics’. Many of its mathematical ideas were exported to Europe and formed the basis of the European renaissance to raise it out of the dark ages that Christianity successfully plunged Europe into. India has the most ancient continual civilisation on earth.
