    My first decision with Multi tools is "does the tool have riveted pins ?" If it does, I don't buy it.
    If something like a Gerber Dime can come with bolts, they all can !
    I've been carrying Multi tools since 1996 and without adjustable pins they aren't worth getting. Some tools are heirloom quality, most aren't.
    I've still got my 1996 SOG Paratool and without the bolts I couldn't have repaired the broken parts or adjusted the friction to keep it in 100% useful condition.
    If you can't repair something, you don't really own it !

    Nice video.
    For proper work the Surge is the only real option. I've lost mine so i've been looking and nothing comes close. Making do with my backup charge tti.
    Cybertool 34 for legal street carry (UK, so no locking blades). I'd like to see more tools integrate the 4mm bits. One of the big advantages of the surge/wave/charge is being able to carry 42 different bits. Similar could be achieved with 4mm bits. Hot tip, I glued a bit kit holder to my phone case.

    I tend to disagree with the focus on one-handed operation. For me personally, suitability of tool for the job is more important than whether I can access the tool with one hand. For example, I don't mind if the scissors on my Surge are inside or outside, as long as they work really well when I need them. That said, great video as always, many thanks.

      @@gregtomamichel973 There are a lot of guys out there who've been in the position of holding something with one hand, and have to reach for their tool with the other to fix it. For me, the functionality of the tools is most important, yes. Though one exception for me is the main blade. I prefer that the blade can be opened with hand hand. Selfdefense is priority for me, yes, even in a multitool.

      His approach wasn't front of mind for me before, but I kinda get it. The whole point of a multitool is to have something right here, versus a toolbox back in the truck or whereever. And if that's true, then having instant access to its internal tools is really the same factor, taken one step further.

    Great video thank you. There are so many variables that go into making a great edc tool for anyone, it’s refreshing to hear someone in this space come out and invite people to actually think about it rather than react to the next shiny new toy.

    I really wanted LM charge and Skeletool to be my multitool of choices but after a year, it actually is the wingman and rebar that i grab, use, and like more.
    You don't choose the multitool, the multitool choose you in the end... at least for me :) I'm just an everyday urban guy.

    For me I think that's why I crossed out Leathermans (for my usecase) because I don't use pliers all that often - and when I do (actually rare), I reach for the Cobra XS in my house, car or office cabinet. I also don't need a tomahawk knife. So I basically currently use a Vic Rambler. But I think an ideal multitool would be a GerberDime done right. ie everything the Gerber Dime has - but where every tool worked correctly, cleanly and was high-quality. They had the right size, right tools but shoddy quality.

  • @simonh6371
    @simonh6371 3 роки тому +1

    Going by your definition of primary and secondary, I'd say that there's a third category, tertiary i.e. those tools which are only accessible by opening the pliers i.e. on the inside, which means all the tools on a Leatherman Rebar or Supertool 300, and all but the pliers on a Gerber MP600.
    However for me it isn't really a major consideration and quality of the multitool and individual tools is most important. Hence I prefer my Rebar over the Free series.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  3 роки тому

      Makes sense but I think the time and effort difference between say the rebar and spirit are about the same, so either way they are tools that work more as companions to your primary functions in your edc...whatever those happen to be.

  • @dgunn4408
    @dgunn4408 Рік тому

    I find it fascinating that people will dedicate endless effort reflecting on, prioritizing, and pursuing the compliment of tools in their truck; the apps on their phone; the accoutrements in their kitchen.. they put considerable attention into optimizing the needs of their finances, their car, their golf bag, their hard drive, their medication and supplements, gym routines, etc.
    But when they come to you and ask, "What multitool should I get?" they just want to hear an answer. You ask what their needs are, what their priorities are, all that stuff that leads to a proper assessment, and very often you are met with "come on.. just tell me the best one!"

    Great video. My friend has a leatherman signal and I really liked the looks of it so I went digging up the multitools and pocket knives my dad has (around 8). They all sucked as none had primary functions like you described. I ended up going with a wave clone (GHK6 from aliexpress) as it has a very nice big primary knife. Material/build quality wasnt that big of a concern for me because i do most of my work at my workbench where I already have lots of tools. Needed a upgraded pocket knife

    What you say makes a lot of sense about any multitool being very specific to individual needs. Agreed. However there is one massive flaw in this video. You seem to have confused the term 'primary' with 'one-handed opening'. A one-handed opening tool is a one-handed opening tool not a 'primary tool'. If you need OHO (on any tool) then this capability is important and relevent to you, if you don't need OHO it is not. Surely a 'primary' tool in a multitool is the tool(s) or function(s) that you need most eg A knife, or pliers, or screwdriver, or prybar, or awl, or whatever etc - And this criteria should determine your choice of MT - If you also need it to be OHO ... that narrows your selection further. You may also wish to refine your selection even further by criteria such as outside accessible!
