In this vlog I visit the "Pamela May", a trip boat run by the charitable Droitwich Canals Trust. We see their current boat and hear about the excellent work of the Trust then visit Ortomarine, the company building the Trust's brand new, all-electric powered boat.

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the UA-cam music library
We own one of the hybrids featured and have been continuously cruising for 17 months. We use the electric drive for all locking, so no noise or fumes, but the best bit is silent early morning cruises. We can thoroughly recommend Ortomarine; they are extremely competent and trustworthy.
This is a real high quality promo for this charity, I feel it is a perfect professional broadcast-able video for a 10min skit on something like Countryfile or something like that.
What a lovely thing to provide for retired people in care homes.
I’d bet these people just love their day on the Canal.
Super stuff.
Fantastic project. I'm sure the people totally enjoy getting outside and cruising for a few hours. Great info on the electric drive system.
I live much to far away to make use of this charitable trust and their narrowboat build, but I must say what a beautiful idea it is. I am sure my daughter (who is wheelchair bound) would love it. Another great video David, with such an inspiring subject. Thankyou.
What a wonderful group! Thanks for sharing their work with us David.
Bless you for giving this group some free publicity! I got a bit emotional listening to the skipper relate his experience with the Navy veteran.
Excellent video, and what a great opportunity for wheelchair bound folks.
this is a great thing for the people that need it! pity there arent more people able to give less fortunate people the chance to experience a day out on the canals.
This rocks! Amazing! thanks a lot again for this insight.
What a fantastic boat. I used to work in a nursing home, how they would have loved a trip on a boat like that! It would be the conversation of the month.
I’m thoroughly impressed with your journalistic investigative talents, David! This vlog is an excellent example, but not as compelling as your piece about the narrowboat washing system.
Haha thanks
It's a shame this video wasn't released a few weeks ago... Could have april fooled us with the upcoming show: "Narrow Electric Boats: Submarines In Our Canals"
I really enjoyed this video especially the story about the man who’d been in the navy. These initiatives are so important and it’s great to see they are now upgrading to a new boat. Well done to Ortomarine for building such a fantastic boat for them. Thanks as always for a great video.
I do love it when you poke around other people's boats
Fantastic scheme, love the ethos....the elderly were once our age and they did unrepeatable acts of heroism to ensure our lifestyle's!......something that I think they is lost on most of the younger generation!.....to give them a day out on this boat is a wonderful thing.
What a fantastic idea. We should do anything for the elderly people in this country as they don't get to do much just sitting inside all day. Really good video thanks for sharing.
Lovely feature David, you still have your reporter’s eye for a story!
It’s always great to hear how things like this can make such a huge difference to people’s lives.
What a wonderful thing those people are doing for the elderly and infirm. Great video, David.
Sounds like a wonderful group of people.
Ive recently decided to start watching your videos again, i love your style and how you get the perfect ratio between commentary and cinematic clips, i love it! The only bad thing is that i will eventually run out of episodes to watch
Well done to this company! The generous prosper and are satisfied. Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Proverbs 11:2. Thanks for sharing ,sir.
How wonderful! My wife must use a wheelchair and if we ever get to visit the UK again, we'll have to try to do this. We've watched many of your vlogs and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Cheers to the Trust folks!!
one other benefit of electric is in tunnels no fumes well done informative video a big Bravo Zulu to you
The moral here is- You can take the journalist from TV and put him on a narrowboat and get excellent reporting with a view.
Long live the Pamela Mays😭
So far this is my favorite episode
Oh, that's grand about the lift on the boat! :) I'm not yet a wheelchair user though my health is a mess and may well be headed that way. There are and have been wheelchair users in my life, as well as people who have Multiple Sclerosis or other things reducing their mobility. We're all in the US midwest and most likely never will get to UK, but do tell the boat owners, builders, and operators, Thank You for thinking about people like us, it is appreciated!
Find a small farm near you and get connected. Good food and light labor are great for the body and mind
Great idea. I'd be using the lift, most of the time I'm using the walker now since the heart attack, 16 months ago and I've got bad joints now from my time in the Canadian Military.
Thank you for your service.
Brilliant idea put into practice. 👍 Partner is paraplegic needing full-time care, our outings are primarily by local bus where for the short time we are away from the home she has the feeling of being 'normal', something like this would be amazing. Great to see the detail of design has been well considered.
Brilliant! The more electric boats the better for everyone there are more than enough diesel fumes in our towns and cities and roads without breathing them in on the canals as well!
If I ever lived in the UK I think I would have to go for a nice hybrid boat, Using electric when ever possible.
Nice video, especially to see a service that benefits many different peoples.
Good work by these folks, and what a great idea using all electric.
Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for showing this vlog. Thank the trust for there work geting older & disabeled people out in the fresh air
The future is bright for canal sailing with the hybrid electric.... so much more relaxing in the quiet that they offer. Yet still gives easy on-board recharging. Thank you again for another brilliant Vlog!
Nice support for a worthy cause
Hello David.
I think thats really nice to see that a group of peopel have the intrest for people who are not able to do some activeties on there owen and can have an enjoyable time at an slow pace.
I do like the idear of electric as its nice and quiet and no fumes having an better chance to see the wildlife and not disturbing them.
All around an good report.
Gerard.
Thank u.
Fabulous,,, big respect to this trust.. keep the boats coming. Well done “cruising the cut “ for this video 👍👍👍
Just thoroughly enjoying these "reporter-like" vlogs. So fun to hear what is going on around the communities with narrowboats. I still like you travel vlogs, but keep expanding. You have good instinct!
Super!! Lovely story, well reported!
It does make a massive difference to peoples lives. What a great charity.
Good to see new innovations coming into a very old form of transport, thanks for taking the time to produce this very informative video.
I really like the forward thinking engineering for this “sport”; and the inclusiveness only ensures its healthy industry. But, I do hope that the esthetics of the older boats is carried forward, so that the soulful experience that comes with the more dated-styled materials is not lost with the advancements associated with new construction and attending choice of materials. Still bang-on videos David. Thank you for bringing them to us admiring viewers! Mark Hanna, Esq. Michigan- USA
I don't think I've ever heard narrowboating referred to as a sport before!! It's more a hobby or even a way of life.
Thank you for another great vlog, I will also pass on my best wishes to the trust who are helping so many people.👍👏
This is a wonderful community asset, soon to be joined by a beautiful new partner to double the good they do. It is also a wonderful job of reporting by a seasoned reporter who understands how to highlight his subject. I wish it had been ten minutes longer.
I'm not that good a reporter, clearly, as I failed to mention that the old Pamela has been sold; the new boat replaces it.
Fantastic documentary well done mate 👍 really enjoy what your do
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, David. What a wonderful boat and wonderful people!
What a great organization, bringing a great day out to so many people that otherwise would not get to experience it. As usual great vlog. Cheers.
Thank you for the presentation about this wonderful organization and the work they do David. Not only does the new boat promise to help the environment but it will provide a great deal of joy for those who get to travel on her. Maybe the future will hold charging moorings along the canals for all electric narrowboats. Thank you again and have a wonderful week.
Very nice to see that cursing is available to everyone... great video
Im sure you mean "cruising"...lol
I curse a bit myself. Oh wait, you meant cruise. Lol
"Cursing" available to everyone. (Giggle)
What a wonderful organization and a wonderful interview! Thanks for spotlighting them.
I can certainly see why you were successful in your career, David. Excellent video!!
Great video, thanks David and really looking forward to seeing the finished Pamela May II from Ortomarine
Interesting video; what a good job they are doing for old people etc. I loved the name on the hybrid boat, Watt Knot. That is right up there with some of your puns.
~ Great to see the effort and dedication from everyone involved... and thanks David for bringing this to our attention.
One of your best videos! Thanks for the effort to bring this story to us.
Very interesting. As battery technology is improving at such a rapid rate I am sure this is the future. Someone needs to start saving the planet very soon. great video David.
Outstanding David, thank you for sharing. Top notch reporting.🤜🤛👍
Well done David, it looks like a proper tv segment not a you tube, amazingly good exposure I must say. Those solar panels looked good on the new roof. It’s reassuring to see some of the work done by volunteers making such a difference.
This is fabulous...thank you for the vlog
Outstanding information on people who care for others and a company who design and build for the environment Awesome video 😁👍
Wonderful, they are lovely people doing amazing work.
was watching this and thinking the boat looked dated and wouldn't it be great to get a fund going to get it spruced up then was delighted to see that they weren't doing it up but getting a brand new one....well done to everyone involved and to you David for highlighting it and hopefully getting them more business.
I saw the Pamela May 2 at the festival, she was looking very smart - and busy giving people a short cruise!
I was there too! There'll be a vlog about it very soon :-)
David: Excellent change of pace and very informative as well. Getting the Senior Citizens to go out for an outing is always good. When we Visited London, I was amazed how I was considered my wife's care giver, as she is wheel chair or scooter bound. We just never think of it here, it is just part of our daily life. COVID-19 has changed some of this of course. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Awesome people!!
Great video thanks.
Greetings,, Kitty.
This is an awesome concept!
Thanks method man
You've done it again, you shown me something I never even knew existed. You've shown me something very interesting and educational at the same time. Very well done. Keep it up and we may start calling you Headmaster David.
Thanks David, for this tidbit. It’s pretty cool that someone provides such a unique service as this.
That was a very interesting vlog. I would like to see more of the project in the future.
love this story and the good folks working to help their fellow man, thank you!
Cool.
Thanks for this most interesting video David.
Nice one. Good to see a special like these
Very good story.
Wonderful - there is so much I liked in this video! The new boat is great with the accessibility and electric technology but I loved the story about the gentleman who used to be in the Navy!
Excellent reporting ! Really a good initiative .
A great video. 'the shape of things to come'.
Minimal maintenance and a quiet, emission free means of propulsion.
I'm impressed, thanks for taking your time to film this. The people that serve for organisations like this one are special people with a kindness that we could all learn from
If I could afford to have a boat built it would be a hybrid, but I can't quite manage that at the moment, so I'm buying an almost complete sailaway that someone has had to sell before completion.
Trip boats such as Pamela May and her sister are invaluable for their ability to allow people to experience the canals from the water, especially those who normally wouldn't be able to get onto a traditionally accessible boat.
I know of many disabled boaters who have their boats modified to allow access, and have space for storing mobility scooters, it's good to see the canals being used by people of all abilities.
As a full time carer for my disabled partner I can vouch for the fact that life by the water has a beneficial effect, and that's one of the main reasons why we are moving onto a boat.
Such a heartwarming video! Lucky people to live near Droitwich! I was impressed with the look of those new, sleek solar panels.
YEA FULLY ELECTRIC!!!🎉😊
I think this is a very fine enterprise, allowing mobility-challenged people an opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy beautiful afternoons in the countryside. The story of the once-again chatty navy man coming out of his shell was particularly heartwarming.
As for the diesel-electric concept, it would seem that this configuration will be seen a bit more and more as those with the budgets to allow for it give the option a serious consideration on the canals. Diesel-electric affords certain other possibilities for the operator: Even though the engine will usually be running to charge the system under way, the options of slowly passing by moored boats on the canal silently, or navigating within marinas conveniently on electric alone present themselves. There has been some development of remote control technology, as well, to assist boat handling through locks, which seems to me quite intriguing. The operator would be able engage and disengage the electric motor while up on the banks or at the gates, or even reverse if necessary, at the other end of the rope. A very nice vlog post touching on the subject of hybrid power. Thanks!
Remote control for 'single handers' like David? Now there's food for thought - it's the nerd in me! Of course, modern 'radio control' has become very sophisticated and very much cheaper than it used to be. Controlling a diesel boat would be a bit clumsy, but an electric boat would be perfect. You'd need a bit of a beefy servo for the tiller, but nothing too outrageous or 'steam punk'. I love the idea of being able to do those swing bridges on the K&A single handed - I believe they are impossible at the moment?
A wonderful story, i just hope some of my Canadian countrymen (or women) see this and become inspired disabled and elderly people in this county need this kind of programming.
Sounds like an interesting video 😊
I take my hat off to the PamelaMay and her crew wonderful work! The joy they bring is priceless.
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this story with all of us. My mom had mobility issues towards the end of her life and it was very hard to take her places because of access issues. I am very happy to see a story about a boat that offers an option for those who may not normally be able to enjoy the canals the chance to do so. I hope you get the chance to peek around her after she is completed and on the water. Such a nice feel-good story.
What a marvellous idea
Fantastic story! Thank you, David!
Great vlog David. A good looking new boat and colour scheme, plus the fact that it will be accessible for those with disabilities is a major factor..
Phenomenal, truly.
Fantastic scheme they are running and thanks for sowing this to us. 😊
Thanks Dave...great Vlog
it's great to hear these kind of stories. thanks.
WOW! what a great idea for those that need a hand. The new boat is my kind of boat. They should consider chargers all over the canal system.
As explained at the end, it would cost a fortune!
A good investment for our earth.@@CruisingTheCut
What a wonderful group of people. Well worth a vlog. Thanks David.
Hybrid seems to be the way to go for a live-aboard, cruise on diesel power for the most part and then overnight and early into the next days journey you have silence.
What lovely people to do this
A handicap canal boat... best !!!! . The world sees ur .. way better then u'd find in usa.. in 2020
Very interesting, good to see these group of people doing this for others
Good on them, well done you for highlighting them
