In this vlog I visit the "Pamela May", a trip boat run by the charitable Droitwich Canals Trust. We see their current boat and hear about the excellent work of the Trust then visit Ortomarine, the company building the Trust's brand new, all-electric powered boat.

We own one of the hybrids featured and have been continuously cruising for 17 months. We use the electric drive for all locking, so no noise or fumes, but the best bit is silent early morning cruises. We can thoroughly recommend Ortomarine; they are extremely competent and trustworthy.

This is a real high quality promo for this charity, I feel it is a perfect professional broadcast-able video for a 10min skit on something like Countryfile or something like that.

What a lovely thing to provide for retired people in care homes.
I’d bet these people just love their day on the Canal.
    Super stuff.

I live much to far away to make use of this charitable trust and their narrowboat build, but I must say what a beautiful idea it is. I am sure my daughter (who is wheelchair bound) would love it. Another great video David, with such an inspiring subject. Thankyou.

Oh, that's grand about the lift on the boat! :) I'm not yet a wheelchair user though my health is a mess and may well be headed that way. There are and have been wheelchair users in my life, as well as people who have Multiple Sclerosis or other things reducing their mobility. We're all in the US midwest and most likely never will get to UK, but do tell the boat owners, builders, and operators, Thank You for thinking about people like us, it is appreciated!

Brilliant idea put into practice. 👍 Partner is paraplegic needing full-time care, our outings are primarily by local bus where for the short time we are away from the home she has the feeling of being 'normal', something like this would be amazing. Great to see the detail of design has been well considered.

I really like the forward thinking engineering for this “sport”; and the inclusiveness only ensures its healthy industry. But, I do hope that the esthetics of the older boats is carried forward, so that the soulful experience that comes with the more dated-styled materials is not lost with the advancements associated with new construction and attending choice of materials. Still bang-on videos David. Thank you for bringing them to us admiring viewers! Mark Hanna, Esq. Michigan- USA

David: Excellent change of pace and very informative as well. Getting the Senior Citizens to go out for an outing is always good. When we Visited London, I was amazed how I was considered my wife's care giver, as she is wheel chair or scooter bound. We just never think of it here, it is just part of our daily life. COVID-19 has changed some of this of course. Keep up the good work. Cheers

If I could afford to have a boat built it would be a hybrid, but I can't quite manage that at the moment, so I'm buying an almost complete sailaway that someone has had to sell before completion.
Trip boats such as Pamela May and her sister are invaluable for their ability to allow people to experience the canals from the water, especially those who normally wouldn't be able to get onto a traditionally accessible boat.
I know of many disabled boaters who have their boats modified to allow access, and have space for storing mobility scooters, it's good to see the canals being used by people of all abilities.
As a full time carer for my disabled partner I can vouch for the fact that life by the water has a beneficial effect, and that's one of the main reasons why we are moving onto a boat.

I think this is a very fine enterprise, allowing mobility-challenged people an opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy beautiful afternoons in the countryside. The story of the once-again chatty navy man coming out of his shell was particularly heartwarming.
As for the diesel-electric concept, it would seem that this configuration will be seen a bit more and more as those with the budgets to allow for it give the option a serious consideration on the canals. Diesel-electric affords certain other possibilities for the operator: Even though the engine will usually be running to charge the system under way, the options of slowly passing by moored boats on the canal silently, or navigating within marinas conveniently on electric alone present themselves. There has been some development of remote control technology, as well, to assist boat handling through locks, which seems to me quite intriguing. The operator would be able engage and disengage the electric motor while up on the banks or at the gates, or even reverse if necessary, at the other end of the rope. A very nice vlog post touching on the subject of hybrid power. Thanks!

    • @rogerwhittle2078
      @rogerwhittle2078 5 років тому

Remote control for 'single handers' like David? Now there's food for thought - it's the nerd in me! Of course, modern 'radio control' has become very sophisticated and very much cheaper than it used to be. Controlling a diesel boat would be a bit clumsy, but an electric boat would be perfect. You'd need a bit of a beefy servo for the tiller, but nothing too outrageous or 'steam punk'. I love the idea of being able to do those swing bridges on the K&A single handed - I believe they are impossible at the moment?

I am very happy to see a story about a boat that offers an option for those who may not normally be able to enjoy the canals the chance to do so. I hope you get the chance to peek around her after she is completed and on the water. Such a nice feel-good story.
