After coming back down the Macclesfield canal (which I didn't film, as it was exactly the same as going up as shown in prior vlogs, albeit in the other direction), I turned south and retraced my path along the Trent & Mersey until I got to Stone, Staffordshire. There I'd booked the boat into a dry dock for re-blacking. This video shows that process. Yes, this is where Minimal List had theirs done too :-)
Location: goo.gl/maps/vJZEkKaZNrS2rBzZ6
Filmed in the last week of October, 2019

If you're interested in two-pack epoxy blacking, Kath & Anna had theirs done like this; see their video here: • 2 Pack Epoxy Narrowboa...

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the UA-cam music library
Amazing the way things were done in the past and still done today. Too bad you have to do it every 3 years. How much does it cost each time? This was a very interesting video, thank you!
Blacking like this costs around £8-£15 per foot of boat length
@@CruisingTheCut Lot less than i would have expected.
I was thinking of an American water seal compound called ‘Linex”, we use this to waterproof the bed of a Pickup truck, pretty good stuff as it literally forms a bonding seal on the metal. I’ve heard it being used to protect the outside of a van or truck, and so far this material has passed even the most stringent of all testing by outdoors adventurers…. Its also expensive…..
"who's a clean boat, whose a lovely clean boat then" :D love it.
Watching this was... you guessed it, immensely satisfying!
That was... a deeply satisfying video to watch. Thank you.
Took the words right out of my proverbial...
I must say, I found this video -- to borrow a phrase from one of my favorite youtubers -- immensely satisfying.
The processes you need to go through to keep you home "ship-shape" are as much of a pleasure to watch as the cruising of the cuts. It is your love of the complete process that makes watching your vlog series such a pleasure - from the cheese sandwiches to the cassette emptying stops that make your episodes so enjoyable.
So nice to look at the simple and ingenious solutions regarding the water handling. Easy, clever.
Great video David
I really like your style reporting style.
No nonsense, very explanatory without sounding too basic or condescending, very informative and NOT boring.
You get it just right.
I appreciate that this used to be your job as a reporter so you’re naturally good at it but still... I thought it worth mentioning as it makes such great viewing
Thank you
Immensely satisfying on-screen,too.
If there’s one word I can take away from this, it would be: “satisfying”
That dry dock looks like original equipment for the canal. Nice that historic things are kept in operating order and remain useful.
Watching this video was, you guessed it..... immensely satisfying!
Thanks David..I remember watching when you did the blacking yourself two years ago....you did a right fine job too!
Those Arched Oak lintel beams at the dock entrance are superb, probably very old, and still solid as concrete!
Very interesting vlog. Agree the yard 🐕 is adorable and spotted you as an animal lover who wouldn't mind entertaining her not a sucker 😂
That yard dog looked irresistibly fun to play with!
Immensely satisfying to watch. The simplicity of the entire canal system is summed up in the draining and filling of one drydock. Wreyland is looking sharp again.
Why do I find this so satisfying when it's not even my boat?
Because it's not your money!
David, watching your vlog was immensely satisfying. I find it fascinating how there are things we enjoy. For example a nice fire burning, water flowing, other people doing a process. I guess that may be some of the success of UA-cam. Off to winter moorings. Looking forward to fireside chats. Cheers, C.
It's surprising just how immensely satisfying watching someone else doing something so much better than you could do yourself actually is
I had no idea how involved this whole process was. It’s really interesting.
Looks like a car in a bad part of town, up on blocks and the wheels missing :-)
I'm guessing that it costs more than £1000 and much less than £2000. A surprisingly satisfying video.
Whatever the price, it's nice to find a yard that does a thorough job. Good vid!
Traditional blacking usually costs anything from £8 - £15 per foot, depending on where you have it done and what they use.
A fascinating watch 👍 I love these kind of 'behind the scenes' videos that show the work involved in keeping narrowboats in tip top condition. Thanks for sharing David 😊
That was immensely interesting to watch, and the dog was adorable.
The last 2 years have flown by. We've watched all your vlogs.
Fun to see the old building still in action and at work : )
Your commentary is also immensely satisfying sir!
Thanks for being a great wordsmith. Yep.
Yes, perhaps David's premier skill as a vlogger.
Being naturally curious I enjoyed this video immensely. I admit (as I have done previously) that I am on catch up with these instalments, but it adds to the excitement. In these stressful times they help me avoid the worry, and I can enjoy cruising with David, and thank goodness I enjoy cheese sandwiches almost as much as he does.
David, your videos are just a delight to watch. and while i was watching this last one, i would like to sugest something to your consideration.. I been looking for good video documentaries about the UK canal network, its history and most important landmarks, and i cant find any relevant material regarding that in video, professionally made, i was thinking....., you are an experienced journalist, and anyone who been watching your UA-cam Channel for a long time (like i been doing) can clearly see that you are a Very competent and good good one at your job, your videos are just a delight to watch, i wonder if you could, if you have enough time spare; it would be, of course, a project without an ETA, you would do it on your spare time, if you would consider, or at least think about doing a documentary movie about the UK canal network, no matter what others might think, we know, and You know aswell, its one of the most amazing engineering projects that makes UK unique all around the world, its part of the UK rich culture and patrimony, how important it was for the country in the far away past, and how important it is still today, not only for the people who narrowboat and live the life, but also for tourism, i believe there are alot of people from all around the world who travel to the United Kingdom in their summer vacations and rent a boat just to live the experience, there is a market for the Movie you would make, you could go all around it, explain why the canal network was built in the 1st place, talk about its history, its landmarks, (i have seen, thank to your videos, bridges and places that have plates with distant dates on it like the 1800's till the 2000's, and its just...outstanding.... and also explain how to rent a narrowboat and tryout, or even the steps to become a narrowboater, and you could even make an agreement partnership with the Canal and River Trust as a documentary movie professionally made about it would benefit them aswell (very much $$$, actually, specially them) and they would for sure be very interested $$$ in it aswell, if you know what i mean, its very good business for them..., i doubt there are many journalists of your rank and caliber living the experience, you own a vast galery of very good video footage already so you could also use it... I dont know if you are aware of the interest of the world about the UK Canal Network and the Narrowboating lifestyle, its unique, David, there is nothing like it nowhere.. only the UK has something like this.....its part of the country patrimony, and its not seriously and professionally documented in video yet....for the CRT it would be very good advertisement, they would get more funds and support from the government, its part of the UK culture and proud history...I can tell that i been talking about your channel and i share your links to many of my friends and even work colleagues and everyone loved and are probably watching your channel now... Alot of people, not only in the United Kingdom and the US, Australia, all Commonwealth and beyond would pay for a documentary like that, I live in Portugal and i would pay good money for it and I Will buy you a copy from it if you do it (from you or from amazon, CRT webpage or wherever you put it at selling, there is no seriously done doc about the subject available anywhere, nothing made in the 2000's that i could find at least.... And just think about it please, you are a superb professional, and you can see and present the both sides of the picture.. the one from the professional journalist and the public in general, and the one from the random narrowboater, the person who lives the lifestyle at the canals 24/7... who else can do it better than you, my friend..? Think about it, it would be tremendous...and above all.. it would be a service to Great Britain...
Hi. Glad you like the videos. Such a project would be a monumental task especially for someone working on their own. It would also be very expensive and would prevent me from getting on with cruising as I see fit and doing the vlogs. There has already been an extensive series on BBC4 called "Canals: the making of a nation" which discusses the history in great detail, perhaps this is something you might be able to locate and watch.
Only one plank was removed . . . we didn't want all the boats to start moving along. Immensely interesting to view.
"Who's a lovely clean boat then" So made me laugh. Love your vlogs, David, even if it's boring stuff like blacking a boat.
Thanks 👍
Eleven minutes of watching paint dry - and I missed The Archers. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as usual
That vlog was immensely satisfying!
I do not know why, but I just love how the dock was sealed with those planks.
Congrats on 200 episodes!
Giving a nod to a good company is the proper thing to do, a reward to them for a job well done.
Have to say David this was a really interesting vlog on the technical aspects of the "original" canals engineering.
Watched the vid three times (simple addiction) before it dawned on me that the understanding and exploitation of hydraulics was rather clever.
No pumps to empty the dry dock or fill it. Just gravity and exploiting the difference in height of the water levels.
Using the dirt ( stove ash?) to seal the stop boards by using the water pressure to take the sinking ash to where it was needed was an easy and cheap way of keeping the water out.
The stop boards themselves obviated a lock gate, hinges and paddle mechanism with the consequent maintenance.
Obviously couldn't say when the concrete liner when down but having the gutter to deal with any leakage was clever so blokes could walk on relatively dry concrete and not be sloshing about in puddles.
Even the lintel (from an oak?) saved having to build an arch, not to mention money.
The overall construction reminded me of the open boat yard docks found in the Arsenal at Venice.
Whoever designed that dock and system was really quite clever with no unnecessary fripperies and doodads, or expense.
"U gestit, IMENSLY SATISFYING" i love it
It's always a relief when your boat is out of the water and there's nothing much wrong, I know I was so pleasantly surprised
When the last child has flown the nest and the plan is to sell my house and live on a narrow boat but keep the motorhome.
I had no inclination of doing this before I started watching this channel.
"I see a green boat and I want to paint it black.
No colors anymore, I want them to turn black..."
😁👍😏
I'm on "cruising the cut" overload. Over the weekend, I discovered you are on Amazon video also. Yeah, I just had to watch all the episodes. Tuesday night I was lecturing myself about getting a life when to my surprise a new vlog on UA-cam! Help, I need an intervention. On my way to rehab. :(
:-)
Yes, I've been recompiling all my early vlogs into half-hour TV-like episodes. At the moment, it's just one season (of nine episodes) but I'll start working on season two soon. It is just my old stuff repackaged though ;-)
Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this with us. I'm fascinated by the simple (by modern standards) but elegant engineering that went into the building of the dry dock. I expected to see all sorts of chains and winches, but not even one appeared to be there.
These videos are immensely satisfying.
its crazy right?? i have zero interest in boating or being outside but i love watching these
oh, you are like me! I love work too, I can watch it all day! :o)
This vlog was, you guessed it, immensely satisfying!
Jim Reynolds Darn! I was going to post that... but was pretty certain someone would’ve beaten me to it. But I agree!
Greetings from Australia - I stumbled, quite by accident onto this channel a month or so ago. I now confess to binge watching the entire series and I am absolutely hooked and fascinated by theses videos and I have learned so much about a culture / lifestyle that I didn't know existed previously. David is the quintessential, polite, dry witted, engaging and charming English gentleman. Apart from the boating content I always smile when I hear old school "British-isms" like Jolly Well, Jolly Old etc. (That is not uttered too much down here these days lol) This bloke is one of the most informative, entertaining and likable hosts on UA-cam. .......Bring on the 2020 series !!!
Thank you :-)
That dog was so cute!
I found that video immensely satisfying.
Nothing so satisfying as watching skilled tradesmen at work. Efficiency!
This was, you guessed it, immensely satisfying to watch.
Never thought I’d find watching a boat in dry dock be so interesting.
LOVE these videos!
As an American, I’m fascinated by this boating culture of narrowboats. This would be heavenly to have in America
It's heavenly because of where it is !!, cheers.
Yes that was very satisfying and interesting seeing the professionals doing the work and amusing when you praised your boat! "who's a clean little boat" 🤣
I Hope you explored Stone a little A fascinating old town centre. I was there 6 weeks ago (Collecting Motorcycle spares) Apart from the Staffordshire oatcakes at the local bakers, You can also acquire your very own, er, "Scone of Stone" ! (Ideal for confused Scotsmen -or Terry Pratchett fans...Keep warm !
I’d hazard a guess and say we have all found this to be immensely satisfying lol. Great vlog as usual😎🇨🇦
Found this video strangely imemensly satisfying
watching your videos is... guess it.... immensly satisfying...and relaxing!
Thanks for letting me enjoy your canal life!
I just cought up with the whole channel. Thanks for all the work and houres of entertainment^^
That was,you guessed it, immensely satisfying!
Draining water and waterfalls in one setting absolutely satisfying. Merry Christmas and happy Boxing Day.🍻🎁
6:44 I'm glad I'm not the only one here that talks to inanimate objects with a baby voice
Playing with the dog is MANDATORY!
I love how simple and low tech the dry dock is!
Immensely satisfying video.
Man where did that 2 yrs go
Fascinating stuff, I can see why this would be very pleasant and satisfying to watch over especially when there is no wear and tear to worry about.
Everything gets better with a cute yard dog.
I think this one will go for " Most satisfying video of 2019", easily.
Excellent video David, thank you.
Watching this video was - you probably guessed it - immensely satisfying. Thank you, Sir!
I talk to my cat. You talk to your boat!
It's always "satisfying" to watch someone else work!!! Sounds like this was a very satisfying experience for you.
This video was “immensely satisfying” . Well done David! 👍
A very satisfying video!
I just happened to watch the three preceding videos but this one was tops! Watching the water drain was fascinating, and then pull up the boards to re-float the boat. Amazing. Cheers,
Watching this video definitely "floated my boat" and was awfully satisfying too! :)
it's early here in Ohio , BUT anytime is perfect for a CruisingTheCut vlog !
Cool. A lot faster with professional equipment and experience. Pretty, pretty boat. Thanks David.😁
Hehe you now need a cup with " Immensely Satisfying !!! " on it to have with you while you are piloting your narrow boat .
Puppies, boats and entertaining commentary, luvverly !
This was immensely satisfying to watch. For some reason.👍
That was.... you guessed it! Immensely satisfying.
That dry dock is an absolutely gorgeous building.
what a cute doggo!!!
I wouldn't be able to resist that puppy either.
That is a beautiful boat! And a happy pooch. I think playing with a dog gives a person good luck. I mean what a stroke of luck getting to play like that and it is good for a boost in mood.
The bottom was in very good shape for 2 years use. The work you did was obviously Well Done.
I'd think the work was immensely satisfying.
Americans: dude it was FREAKING EPIC!
Brits: this was immensely satisfying
That's the company we hired a boat from for a week and did the Caldon a couple of years ago. Pleasant people to deal with and the yard dog fun to play with. They made quick work of your job. Hope you took time to walk around Stone, its a pleasnat village and has a great bakery and market in the mall. All the best for Christmas and New Year, it's been a great pleasure watching your videos over the year and look forward to the pcoming vanning ones.
I find old tool and equipment restorations on YT immensely satisfying for the same reasons - watching crud removed and freshened up is the loveliest. I just wish I felt the same about cleaning house.
I've got a windy hole of the Trent and mersey at the back of my house and I just love watching the traffic. You did travel past me last year but your camera was off !
Fantastic video! Fairly straightforward but as you said, immensely satisfying!
Another great offering from you David. Always enjoyable!
This video was.... immensely satisfying.
☺️
this was a very interesting view of a blacking job done very well . the yard dog was so cute. cheers ; ]
That was immensely satisfying to watch
Immensely satisfying video. Some reasons for getting professionals to do the job!
I watch you vlogs somewhat out order do to my smart tv. My opinion after a few was, this is such a professional and fact filled vlog. Then one episode (my 4th or so) you interviewed a professor in a silly hat talking about tunnel boat washes. Before laughing I was like wth!!! Thank you good stuff all around.
The eccentric Professor is very comical. I doubt we've seen the last of him...😅🤣😂
I always notice how people who do a job regularly make things look so easy. On autopilot, the instinctive twist of the jet wash to best remove a stubborn bit. The exact dipping of the brush in the paint to get the right amount time after time and the right pressure to apply it properly. It was very therapeutic to watch. (I did not want to say satisfying). Excuse the pun... but paws for thought. You need a boat dog. Yard dog was adorable.
You should be on the tele. A great film maker and broadcaster
The fact that the sacrificial anodes were in such excellent condition is a very good sign that the hull of the boat isn't corroding significantly One goes with the other.
The anodes shouldn't actually be necessary - and wouldn't be if the only metal in the water was all the same metal.
