  • Hey there, in this video I'm going to show you where all the bolts are located on the manual transmission of a 1997 Rav4, or first gen Rav. This should be helpful for anyone working on similar cars, even into the second generation. The engine in this car is a 3s-fe, and it's connected to a manual all-wheel drive transmission.
    Just a quick correction, I referred to a component as the "4 wheel drive modulator", but it's actually a differential locker. This was my first time pulling a transmission and replacing a clutch, and I wanted to share some of the information and locations that I had trouble finding myself.
    Unfortunately, I didn't get footage of re-installing the transmission, but I did succeed after some difficulty. If I were to do this again, I'd probably invest in a transmission lift and a better mechanic creeper.
    I hope this video proves to be helpful to others who are taking on the challenge of a transmission pull and clutch replacement. When I was working on this project, I had a lot of questions about bolt locations, mounting brackets, and what parts needed to be removed to complete the job. I tried my best to capture the answers to these questions in the video, and I hope it can save you some time and frustration.
    It's always difficult to take on a project that you haven't done before, and I definitely struggled with this one. But with perseverance and the help of some online resources, I was able to successfully complete the transmission pull and clutch replacement. If you're taking on a similar project, my advice would be to take your time, be patient, and don't be afraid to ask for help or seek out resources online.
    Overall, I'm happy to share what I learned through this process, and I hope that it can be useful to others who are working on similar projects.

    Good work mate. That's a lot of work. I got a '99 Rav and rear engine mount needs to be replaced. If I remove all the bolts on my sub frame, will it drop so I can access the rear engine mount?

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  Рік тому

      Yes, assuming yours is pretty much identical to mine except for the year you will need to remove both front tires, un bolt sway bar, lower control arms, steering rack, and of course the bolts I mention in the video, also the plastic skid plates. refer to roughly 6:25, the entirety of what I show and refer to as the subframe will drop down, you may need to support the engine in some capacity because 2 of the 4 mounts will be removed or otherwise disconnected while you pull the subframe. when re installing I lifted the subframe with a car jack, there was a bit of wiggling to get it back into place. id rate the difficulty of your project a 6.5/10 assuming you have the proper tools, 5/10 being average.

      @@meo4255 I think our Ravs are very similar on the sub frame and mounts as per your video. Thanks for the tips, very helpful. Hope the vibration on the engine will be less when I got successful in changing the rear mount. Any video with the reinstall part of your repair?

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  Рік тому +1

      @@rouge0449 no, i got a little too excited and just went for it without video. it was extremely challenging to reinstall the transmission alone. it had to be lifted and oriented in just the right way to reinstall. It took about 6 hours to get the first bolt in. some of this is surely because I did not have the proper transmission lift. car now drives well but i may post a few more things in the weeks to come as there is some minor work I still need to do.

    I am about to attempt this on my 1999 Rav4. Would you say it’s probably easier to pull the engine looking back?

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  3 місяці тому

      Yes and no. Pulling the engine too adds about 4 hours to the book time (17hr for clutch I belive vs 21 for engine and transmission) if I were to do it again I'd probably only pull transmission, but yes I think that if you have the time and patience pulling them together would be easier generally. I've gone back and forth on that topic a lot. It might be a good idea to do both if you wanted to also do a timing belt and seals on the engine due to ease of access.

    Hi. Would a manual transmission straight replace the auto without further modification and parts replacement, for a 4WD?

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  Рік тому +1

      From what I gather, you are asking if you could do a manual conversion from an existing automatic 2wd model of the rav 4. I would say it is possible but very costly, time consuming, and generally a difficult project to do.
      The good is that the unibody should accept all the parts that you would need to swap in to do the conversion, the body is made for either a manual or automatic drivetrain. The underside is ready made to accept a 4wd drivetrain but you will need to source all the components involved, rear cv axles, differential, driveline, manual transmission with the associated mounting hardware, vacume modulators, manual drive column, switches, and I suppose the wiring harness since there are a couple of plug in spots on the one I show that I am not sure correspond with the automatic transmission.
      I say if your looking to really do something cool and difficult do this, but if you just want a manual rav with 4x4 buy one with the profits you make from selling the one I assume you own now.
      The nice thing is the 3sfe will accept multiple transmissions in a more or less "plug and play" style.
      Did I answer your question or miss your point entirely?

      Didn't know they made the rav in a 4x4 automatic model. Then yes it actually should be a lot easier to do that conversion pretty much plug and play, I don't know about the wiring but beyond that I'd say it will go More or less smoothly.

    How did you alighn the clutch plate to the flywheel? mine doesn’t have a pilot bearing…so I’m confused on how the alignment would work because the tool my kit came with has a tip to where a pilot bearing would be but it won’t fit because no bearing on flywheel

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  6 місяців тому

      I used a clutch alignment tool to center the clutch then to get the trans back in it just took a lot of patience and adjustment of the engine support. No real trick I can share unfortunately, just one of those pain in the ass jobs that can take 5 minutes or 5 hours

    • @MrRasZee
      @MrRasZee Місяць тому

      you can glue the clutch plate with 3 drops of super glue to the flywheel you can centre it pretty good with existing score lines that are in circles around flywheel mark where clutch will go with a marker pen before glueing it . when you get it all back together as soon as you push the clutch it will break the super glue and yer clutch will work fine . this is how ive aligned clutches many times

    Did you remove/install the trans with the center diff attached?

    • @meo4255
      @meo4255  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes. It does not need to be separated to get the trans out. There are bolts holing it on to the block that do add time. The 2wd trans probably takes 2 hours less I'd assume. Be careful to make sure the diff locker pin does not get disconnected when reinstalling the trans. The diff locker can get stuck on or off if it does get disconnected. It's located on the top /side of the diff with a vacumme actuator connected to it. It's under a rubber boot. You can find diagrams on rav4 world forums

      @@meo4255 I can't seem to get it back together without taking them apart. I'm tired of messing with it. I'm hoping I can bolt the center diff loosely to the engine then line it all up. @devonswindell9735 yeah it was really tricky getting everything to line back up when I did mine. Clutch has to line up exactly to input shaft on transmission and the little dowel pins need to meet up with the motor mating surface. I ended up being able to catch a few threads and force it together, that is wrong way to do it but it worked for me. You risk damaging the clutch doing that.

    Good evening, I need a little help, I have a rav4 with a 3s FE engine and the 4x4 transmission system is disassembled. In the video, you said you took photos before disassembling, could you share these photos to find out how to connect?

    • @meo4255
