A veteran grandfather battling severe illness insisted on rising from his bed and standing to welcome his Navy grandson home before sharing an emotional hug. Deshawn Liptrap, from Killeen, Texas, left for boot camp with the United States Navy in November 2023, and had been desperate to travel home to visit his sick grandpa, James, 75, a Vietnam veteran. James was diagnosed with cancer and Deshawn, having spent months in boot camp and then A School, was presented with a chance to return home after graduation, on May 2. Deshawn, 18, opted to head back to Texas right away, where he walked into his family home and surprised his grandpa, who was lying in bed. Upon seeing his grandson, a proud James made his way to the edge of his bed, before insisting on standing under his own strength. He and Deshawn then shared an emotional hug, which Deshawn felt extremely proud of, as during his time with the Navy he had dreamed of making his grandpa proud and seeing him one last time. Deshawn also paid surprise visits to his brother Damarion and grandma Woong, capturing all three moments on video. Having returned to base in Florida two weeks later, Deshawn was then given the sad news that, on May 30, James had passed away. By sharing the video of his grandpa's strength on social media, Deshawn hopes to inspire others and to honor his late grandpa.

I am LOUDLY wholeheartedly ugly crying 😭😭😭 I'm an Army Veteran myself and know what those reunions, TO EVEN JUST A HEALTHY PERSON, truly mean . . . I'm so glad I joined when I was young, STILL SO NAIVE, and just dumb and the fear of true and/OR FINAL consequence hadn't kicked in yet?? Every bit of my soul feels this🤍🩶🖤
I lost my Mother shortly after leaving the service AND I COULD NOT IMAGINE HER BEING ILL WHILE STATIONED OVERSEAS OR DEPLOYED!!! No one should have to experience walking in on their loved one in this state ESPECIALLY if when you left them they were healthy, just loving living life . . . It's a physical pain that is so far beyond being able to be explained??

I too was raised by my Grandparents. My Grandpa was a WWII Vet and i was so proud of him. My Grandmother was an Angel, and i miss them so much it hurts. They were so proud when i came home from Boot camp, my Grandpa and Grandma couldn't quit hugging me. First thing was, he took me down to the American Legion and then the Vets club for a shot and a beer. Can't wait to see them again.

Ah yeah I never had that gift. My grand father died obese. I only have one existing negative emotion memory of him, where he threatened to whoop me when I didn't stop throwing dirt at my sister, and I cried, full of rage, but I forgive him , he did more good than bad, I hold good memories of him than say evil ones. He didnt die how I wished, he died obese and ate himself to death to where when my grandmother was. Very lacking in love he simply had aneurysm, and 2 years later died on 2023 October.

    This just brought
back a flood of memories and tears. When I was overseas serving my first demployment I received word
that my grandmother was very ill and they did not know how long she had left to live. I never gave up hope that somehow I would be back to see her before she passed. I made it home as soon as I could after I arrived back to the states from my deployment. She was resting in an oversized recliner when I walked in the door and I knelt down beside her to give her a big hug, she looked at me and she said,,, sweetheart, I'm going to stand to hug my boy. I was able to spend the night with her and the next day I had to hop back on a plane to get back to my duty station. She passed away nine days later. Her hugs and her kisses and the time that I was able to spend with her got me through a lot of rough shit overseas. Oh, how I miss you so My Sweet Grandma ❣️

Ok, that was awesome! :) As a VSO, I've seen some veterans neglected by their families, but I have seen other veterans lovingly shown compassion and mercy, to give life even in the bleakest of these circumstances. I have met Veterans with only a few short years to live and their wives standing side by side with them. I have seen veterans fathers with their daughters giving up everything so that they can take care of their loved one. It blesses me when I get to meet these men and women who served our country and the families who serve them with Christ like mercy and compassion and through the toughest of times!

He’s a sailor, not a soldier. Only the army has “soldiers.” Never call a sailor or a marine a soldier to their face, unless you want a thorough chewing out. Army=soldier, Navy=Sailor, Marines=Marine, Air Force=Airman. If you can’t remember them, or if you don’t know what branch someone is in, it’s probably best to just call them a serviceman. It’s like calling a state trooper “officer” sometimes they get all bent out of shape, if you don’t call them trooper.

I finished Air Force Boot and the Security Forces Academy, Security Police in my day. and came home on my first Leave, Dad a Korean Era Veteran, Army, occupation duty in Austria.. I stepped into his room as he just stared at me.
I walked over to him and placed my folded Beret in his Hand with a "I love you Dad"
He gave me the biggest smile I've sever seen, and I hugged him tight.. The last time I ever communicated with him before he passed away.. he slipped into a coma like state shortly after,
It still breaks my heart that I managed to make him so happy and proud at our last meeting together..
I miss you Dad, you were always my first hero.. and still are..

When my wonderful Granddad Gerry was dying of cancer I was in hospital myself with a bad kidney infection (I have a lot of health problems) & my Dr's wouldn't let me discharge myself to make the 6 hour journey with my parents to go & say goodbye to him. I was heartbroken- spent the whole weekend calling my Nan & Auntie trying to get to speak to my Granddad. He finally called me & although we were only able to speak for a few minutes as he was very unwell he was just as cheerful & loving as he always was. He told me he loved me when he said goodbye & I just knew it was the last time I was ever going to speak to him. An hour later he died & the whole family was devastated. I treasure the photos of our last family Christmas just a few weeks before he died to see how happy & smiling he was during the surprise 7 course Christmas dinner me & my ex took the whole family out for on Christmas day. My Granddad never been out for lunch on Christmas day so me & my ex chose this beautiful hotel & took the whole family out rather than having Christmas dinner at home, with my Granddad obviously sitting at the head of the table & although I planned to sit between my ex & my Dad at the other end, my Granddad insisted I sit next to him & we spent the whole meal laughing & joking. It's an amazing memory- one I'll never forget. But I miss you so much Granddad Gerry 🕊️

My daddy was a vet who caught cancer from agent orange in Vietnam....in 2003 my daddy had radiation but it came back in 2012, my daddy passed 11 days after my bday in 2018 on 4/10, then my daddy older brother passed from the same a year later ... There isnt a day i dont think of my daddy , he passed when he was 72 at home with the family he created...but he waited until my mommy came back from the store after i walked out the room to depart, he just wanted to have that time with his wife alone. Honor your parents and grandparents, its by their prayers we're still alive 💯🙏🫵🙌🫶

My father died of stomach cancer 9 years ago now. Woke up with a bad stomach pain and they found a tumor the size of a grapefruit on his stomach. Stage 4. He lasted 4 months. By the time he died he was 75 lbs and was bedridden and it spread to his brain and by the end he barely knew who I was. The hardest thing I’ve ever experienced seeing my strong stoic father wither away to nothing. I feel for this young man. 😢

Really wish my dad had said “I’m proud” or “I love you” I come from that hard nose family that don’t say those words. I’m an Iraq/ Afghanistan combat veteran and went on 7 deployments. Lost my mother on my 2nd deployment, my father on my 3rd deployment and my sister and nephew on my 6th deployment. So hearing a word of appreciation and acceptance was what I wanted to hear and never got it. We as men seek approval from 1 person😢 in our life, that’s our father. Everyone else’s opinion doesn’t mean anything, you’re not a man til you lose your father. I want this noted that I’m not looking for sympathy or pity in any way whatsoever so please don’t think that I’m whining or anything please. But me and my wife have 2 sons, 23 (USMC) and 13 (autistic) but sometimes my mind wonders. And I’d ask if everyone would pray for those 2 boys/ men before me.🫡🫡🫡

Unfortunately, he passed away during boot camp. The Red Cross got him home on a twenty four hour pass after the crucible. To attend my dad's full honor funeral. My son said the 1 person he wanted is graduation, but he was not there. I truly believe he was in spirit. He was so proud of my son. Out of his nine grandchildren, My son was the only one that served our country.
