    In this video, I review Fun to Cook Book, published in 1955 by the Carnation Milk Company. Join me as I cook up a delicious Orange Pie, and try to solve the Mystery of Mary Blake!

    I had fun with this cookbook. We saved lables from the Carnation "milk" cans and sent them in for the cookbook. I was so excited when I got it. I was eight at time. My granddaughter has it now.

    At some points, your channel, especially the kid recipes, almost brings me to tears. i was born in '61 & my mom used buy Family Circle & Women's Day every month also. We had those glass' bowls w/the 'handles', a full set of Tupperware '(we even had the long-handled spoons for stirring tea & the bowl for storing a roast chicken). I miss those days gone by.

    My mom used to make a jello pie recipe that had a package of jello mixed with boiling water and one pint of vanilla ice cream, poured into a graham cracker crust. My favorite was the orange flavor because it had canned mandarin orange slices in it. Strawberry and raspberry were usually the other flavors she would make and add the corresponding fruit. I'm pretty sure she found the recipe in a magazine. Everyone loved those pies! I really need to make one for a church supper someday.

    Whipped evaporated milk was commonly used for mousse in my childhood. We used to chill the can in the fridge for at least a day first, and the it whipped up very easily.

      That’s so interesting! I never would have thought of trying that.
      I’m curious what type of mousse your family made. Chocolate seems obvious, but I’m wondering if they made a salmon or liver mousse - as I’ve long wanted to attempt one of those!

    Yes, I had that book! It was my first, and it was my most favorite as a child. How did I forget about it?! Thank you, you made my day. It brought back so many memories for me, and I will now be in search for a copy as my mother has passed and I have no idea what she did with the book.

    I remember one my mother brought home for all of us in the last 60's. I had 3 brothers and 1 sister and she taught us all to cook. Cooking is a family thing for us!

    I learned to cook from my moms 1956 Betty Crocker Cookbook. I was ten. My mom was at work, so I made peach pies for dessert they both turned out great. I never stopped cooking after that

    Oh my gosh! I had this cookbook as a child and made quite a few of the recipes. The 123 Fudge Sauce was a favorite. I wish I still had it.

      Ohhh. I loved 1 2 3 fudge sauce when I was a girl in the late 60's. I'm going to make that again. Thanks for the memorie

    I love this! I found your channel a few days ago and am really enjoying it. I've collected cookbooks for some time - with a special interest in kid's cooking. Watching your channel made me want to try a few of the recipes. Yesterday, I selected my Fun To Cook Book and my daughter picked the orange pie. It was really fun to find out that you've done a video on it already! Thanks so much for the fun content!

      Oh I love this! I ended up making a lemon version of this pie for Easter that same year, and it was great. A little tangy, but delicious! Kids cookbooks are some of my favorites.

    Apparently, the acid in the lemon does something to the proteins in the milk, causing it to thicken quite a bit. It works the same way on condensed milk as well. I make a 3 Ingredient Cheesecake with roughly the same ingredients and it sets up just like a cheesecake. :)

      I know exactly the cheesecake you’re talking about. I learned to make it in my home ec class. Funny, this video made me think about that and I literally was going to look up that recipe after watching this video. It really is a delicious cheesecake .

    Funny story. I was in our local used book store yesterday in the cookbook section. I saw Fun To Cook Book and remembered I had it in my collection. Then I came home and saw you with it on your channel!

    In Australia, this is called a flummery. We would use a whole tin of really well chilled evaporated milk. Make up a box of jelly (jello) of any flavour with only 1 cup of boiling water and allow to set until like egg white consistency. Whip evaporated milk until very thick, add the jelly, continuing to beat well until well mixed. Then refrigerate.

    My first vintage cookbook was the Bette Crocker Boys and Girls cookbook from 1965. My grandmother gave it to us. I guess she bought it after my sister was born in 1963. I still have it. Looking through the recipes is like a walk down memory lane ❤

    I used to make my mum disgusted when I made hot orange juice for myself as a child in the late 80s. The first time I did it was because it was a cold winter morning but I wanted orange juice so I heated some up in a small saucepan and drank it from a mug. Was delicious!

    So after a bit of research, I found that the Carnation mile was a sponser for the George Burns and Gracie Allen show. Some thought that Gracie wrote the cookbooks because she would sign some of them. However, I could not find anything that confirmed that Gracie was the author or Mary Blake was a real person.

    My mom used to make
    “Lemon Mousse “
    It was made in her school cafeteria.
    It was sweetened condensed milk with lemon juice and very little sugar added! You have to put the parts in the freezer but don’t freeze them! Then after whipping you put it back in the freezer.

    Your channel is becoming one of my favs, you and I have exactly the same tastes in vintage aesthetic and cookbooks. I was so happy to see the “friendship” pattern of Pyrex, the two orange birds on one of your dishes! I have the casserole and paid a kings ransom for the beautiful matching lid on eBay years ago. It’s hard to find cause it breaks so often compared to the Pyrex! Where did you get your vintage print style knives???

    My mom used to make a version of this pie when I was growing up. Great recipe and memories, thank you so much Anna!
    Speaking of No Bake recipes, have you ever seen a recipe for no bake oatmeal cookies using brown sugar and cream (no chocolate)?? My great aunt used to make them back in the mid 60's. I can't find a recipe anywhere!!!

    i like kids cooking books. When they have realistic recipes in them not full of desserts. I found these words where someone was writing about the author of her cookbooks.
    Mary Blake, spiritual healer, author and multi-life therapist, committed her life to serve as an Instrument of Divine Purpose in 1978. She studied extensively with eminent psychologists and spiritual leaders in the United States and the UK, earned the degrees of Minister of Spiritual Counseling from the New Seminary and Certified Family Therapist from the Blanton-Peale Institute of Pastoral Counseling. In addition to her private practice, she taught Healing, spiritual development and self-mastery classes in New York City. She's on FB I'm not going to ask if she made cookbooks

      Mary Blake was a pseudonym at Carnation so i dont think the spiritual healer is the same person.

    I had this cook book when I was a kid! But I was born in 1977 so I guess it was my mom’s but I have 3 older sisters so not sure how I got it in such good condition that I did. I loved that book! 😊

      I liked it so much that I ended up making a lemon version for Easter. I used an 8x8 square pan rather than my too-small pie dish for that one 😂

    I lost my original cookbook - to be honest, my mom gave it away - and would love to discover it in the wild. It was called Kid's Cooking and was printed in the early 70's (i believe). My favorite recipe from that book was Wacky Cake, which is the only recipe I was able to write down before it disappeared. I also remember making peanut brittle with my mother's help.

    You can make that into a parfait. Layer with crushed vanilla wafers and either cool whip or real whip cream. Yum!

    I have this book!!!! I grew up with this book! My aunt helped my sister and I cook from it. We made the fudge, the sandwiches and yes with celery lol, and also the ice cream sauce. I can't remember what else we made from it tho. I found it online, my aunt still has the original that we used. So glad to see this!! I sent the link to this video to my sister to watch.

    You can actually put this is sundae glasses with the crust at the bottom and put the filling in a pastry bag with a tip and push it in the glass. Same thing just a bit different to appeal to the children. lol Have a great day

    You show off this book making it sound exciting. I'm going all through google looking for the best price of this book...😂 My grandson is 9 and showing interest in cooking. I will have to buy a case of evaporated milk so he can follow directions. We can alter them later.

    I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your channel. I lost a friend in the early part of the summer, and I’ve been feeling very down although I’m getting much better. But I came across your channel just as I really needed something cheerful the most. I really enjoy your commentary,and it’s made me wanna go on a hunt for vintage cookbook! Also, I tried the orange pie Friday night, and it turned out very well. 😊

    I did a search for Mary Blake and pulled her up as an author of books on Goodreads! So funny. I found your channel last week and absolutely love it as you have books I still have and others from the same era. I am 67 and have always loved cookbooks so this is a blast from the past. My mother still has the Tupperware measuring cups and the different mixing bowls and casseroles just bring back so many wonderful memories.

    I used to do a very similar recipe but with limes instead of oranges, and it was a sort of frozen key lime pie kind of thing. Delicious!

    I just found a blog entry from someone for whom this book played a very important role in her childhood (right after she got the book, her mother lost feeling in her legs, and began experimental treatment -- I haven't finished reading the blog entry yet, so I don't know how the writer's mother responded to treatment). Anyway.. I just needed to include a quote that the blogger included from her childhood diary:
    December 8, 1959.
    Dear Diary,
    The 47 pages of this book have suddenly become part of my life. I found out today that Margie Blake is as real as Nancy Drew’s Carolyn Keene and that really sucked! My mother is back in the hospital for a long time, so Margie Blake’s imaginary family has become mine.
    Now back to the blog, then back here for the video!

    Just discovered you last week. I'm REALLY enjoying your videos! Thank you Anna! You are fun and a delight, and you sound like me, talking to yourself while cooking! Haha!
    It would be useful if you could include a link to the previous video if you refer to one. Now that it's 2 years later and you have A LOT of content... it just takes longer to find the "previous" video you referred to. I have now... but, I'm just suggesting for future references... it will make life easier.
    Also, I would include it here, but YT (in their infinite wisdom 🙄) have currently stopped allowing links to work from comments. (Grumble, grumble) so, it's kind of useless for me to do so.

    I was taught to cook by my mother in the 50s. By the time I was nine, I could plan, market for, and cook, a three-course meal. Cooking is one of the essential life skills, like swimming and budgeting, that every child should learn as early as possible.
    PS. Cooking really helped me learn about weights and measures, too.

    I’m thinking the filling would be good with vanilla ice cream. Or make the crust with vanilla wafers (aka ‘Nila wafers), or another kind of cookie. Seems one might want to try making it without the additional sugar. There’s a lot of room for experimentation with this one.

    I’m actually surprised that children as young as 8 and 9 were considered old enough to cook back in the 1950s! I don’t know that most kids that age are responsible enough to be heating butter and juice on the stove. I’d also worry about them using sharp knives and a grater.
    But having been born in the 1960s, I remember how much more independence parents allowed their children.
    Though the Fun to Cook Book may not have presumed little girls would grow up to become homemakers, I observed that the book *did* still subtly present that expectation - such as in the way that the girl was “serving” food to the little boy in the image you showed us. 😕

    This is a very successful dish with non-diary whipped topping (Cool Whip) and the freezer. See Mindy Mom makes these in many of her videos varying up the flavors. Lemon is a good choice, too.

    I have that book, given to me when I was six or seven. I made so much fudge from that cookbook! I don't understand the problem with the title. It's cute, imo.

    My first cookbook was The Nancy Drew Cookbook. Have you seen it? I stsrted cooking at 9 and made probably every recipe in that book. Not sure thebyear but it was probably from the 1970's. I was born in 1965. Would love to see yoy trying recipes from it. I'll see if i can find mine.

    People use to make baby formula with carnation milk in the 60’s maybe even earlier, I’m not sure what they added to it

    I Googled it---here's what I found. "100 Glorified Recipes was compiled by the Carnation Company though authorship was attributed to Mary Blake. Blake was a pseudonym used by the Carnation Company to promote their condensed milk product through their published recipe books. In the attached image, a constructed picture of Mary Blake has been provided. Blake was the author of these cookbooks beginning in 1923 and, thus, served a vital role in the Carnation Company's advertising campaigns. " So she's fake, and so is Margie Blake.

    Cannot stand cooking with evaporated milk and always substitute Milk Half and half or light or heavy cream Evaporated milk has the taste of a a tin can and remember its taste while in Italy where it is used often instead of fresh milk and creams. Odd to me as fresh cheeses there are superior.
