It doesn't appear anyone has gotten to the bottom of Ankalaev's situ. The fight was offered and he wants it at the end of the year - holding up the division and a champion with too many options. But is it true? You then read comments about Ank being passed over, Pereira ducking him... is that true? And again, no one appears to want to get confirmation that Ank rejected anything before the end of the year, that the offer of a title fight was there.

Forced to relinquish his belt, early stoppage, the UFC owe Jiri an earlier rather than later rematch. (And seriously, who doesn't want to watch that fight over and over? They are fantastic as opponents, both look glorious and scary, potential victory with every blow. Exciting stuff.)

I think Pereira and Jones are both too old as champions to take dangerous fights if there isn’t much money or legacy in it for them. It’s not fair to the deserving contenders (or interim champions) and frustrating for many fans, but it’s the best career move for them.

Jones has shown what you're saying to a T. Pereira has the opposite attitude it would appear. Pack the fights in, make up for time spent out of the UFC (that his first MMA fight was... 2016?), build a legacy and claim GOAT status in record time.
The only problem there is wanting to turn away from the division and fight everyone else to achieve GOAT status and legacy and the UFC appear to want to use him for what they gain in having the hype match ups.

this "champion" philosophy is so selfish if you compare it with other sports. Jones is champion, Aspinal is interim champion. Fight him or you are coward. that will be your legacy.

jones is literally the mayweather of the mma world. He always ducks dangerous opponents and had fake retirement.
