  • Danieri Basammula-Ekkere Mwanga II Mukasa was the traditional ruler or Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda in the present day Uganda. His reign lasted from 1884 to 1888, and then from 1889 to 1897. He fought against colonialism beginning with one of their major tools of penetration into African societies; which is religion. Mwanga II resisted Christianity and when he saw he couldn’t succeed, he became a convert but didn’t stop fighting to retain sovereignty of his kingdom.
He was born around 1868 at Nakawa. His father was Muteesa I of Buganda, who ruled from around 1856 to 1884. Muteesa had 85 wives and Mwanga’s mother was his 10th.
After the death of his father, Mwanga ascended the throne of Buganda as the Kabaka at the young age of 16. At the time, British Christian missionaries were already making in-roads into the kingdom of Buganda.

Romance with the British... very difficult for him to swallow given his preference - at least in part, for romancing guys (that is perhaps what the sexually molest part was about). But kings did mostly what they wanted then.
